Mumbai has been known to be one of the busiest and resultantly, the noisiest cities in the world. We have all faced incessant, unnecessary honking at traffic signals, even when the lights are red. The <keyword id="86426" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Traffic-police">Mumbai Traffic Police</keyword> wanted to address this problem and partnered with FCB Interface to find an answer. The agency came up with an innovative solution, The Punishing Signal to tackle the honking menace in the city. As a part of the activation, special decibel meters were connected to traffic signals across the city. Every time impatient people would honk, and the decibel levels would exceed 85dB, the signal timer would simply reset itself, adding another 90 seconds to the wait. <ul><li>How the <keyword id="86426" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Traffic-police">Mumbai Traffic Police</keyword> took on the honking brigade with some tech and typical Mumbai humour.</li><li>The campaign ‘Punishing Signal’ has been conceptualized by <keyword id="3361020" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FCB-Interface">FCB Interface</keyword>.</li></ul>Mumbai is one of the noisiest cities in the world. And a lot of this noise can be traced back to cacophony at the signals. Mumbaikars honk even when the signal is red! Needless to say, this noise pollution is making the city alarmingly unhealthy to live in. To tackle this <keyword id="4396938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="honking-menace">honking menace</keyword>, the Mumbai Traffic Police, in partnership with FCB Interface came up with an innovative solution called The Punishing Signal.

 This is how it works. Special decibel meters were connected to traffic signals across the island city. When the decibel exceeded a dangerous 85dB, the signal timer would reset itself... forcing the people to wait longer at the signal! Thus ‘punishing’ them for their impatience with the message, honk more, wait more! “Honking is bad habit and an act of traffic indiscipline. Unfortunately, many Mumbaikars indulge in reckless honking. Honking causes noise pollution, hurts the eardrums, increases heart rate, creates traffic confusion and causes stress. Unnecessary honking is a menace which everyone recognizes but does little to curb. This small experiment is one of many attempts by Mumbai Police to create better road discipline in Mumbai. Hopefully, it will encourage Mumbaikars to honk less, and create a noise-free and stress-free commute,” said Madhukar Pandey, Jt. Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mumbai Police. As a part of the campaign, the first leg of activation was tested in Mumbai at important junctions that are most prone to heavy traffic such as CSMT, Marine Drive, Peddar Road, Hindmata and Bandra. And the film gives one glimpses of the confused honking Mumbaikars who honked, waited, honked and learnt it the hard way, that honking is not the way out. Shedding light on the creative idea, Robby Mathew, Chief Creative Officer, FCB Interface, said, “Sometimes, the stick works better than the carrot. And a signal that gave us a gentle rap on the knuckles for honking unnecessarily, seemed like a good idea to me”. Adding, Rohit Ohri, Group Chairman and CEO FCB Group, said, “We have been partnering Mumbai Police for many years now. Noise pollution is a big problem in our cities. This new initiative is a fantastic creative solution for bringing about awareness and a behaviour change amongst the drivers in Mumbai.”

Mumbai Traffic Police will now punish you for honking, here is how

If you’re caught breaking the traffic in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mumbai">Mumbai</a> anytime after January 12, we’d advise you keep your wallet handy- with your debit or <keyword id="6368202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Credit-card">credit card</keyword> as the <keyword id="86426" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-Traffic-police">Mumbai Traffic Police</keyword> has done away with accepting fines by cash and will be asking offenders to swipe their cards to pay the fine. 
 
Over 1000 machines have been handed over to traffic constables all across the city on January 12, in accordance with the traffic department launching its e-challan system. 
 
As these machines have been rented out from private firms, a convenience charge of Rs 9.5 will also have to be borne by the offenders along with their fine. The department has also tied-up with State Bank of India to help them handle the online challan payments. 
 
If you happen to be a motorist not carrying your card on the fateful day, the traffic department has another option for you. You will be given a 15-day window period to pay the fines through netbanking. However if you’re unable to pay your fine by the 15th of your stipulated date, you’ll be required to pay an additional Rs 10 everyday’s delay thereafter. 
 
However, incase you do not possess a card, your details will be uploaded into a system and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=traffic+police">the traffic police</a> will give you an e-challan. You’re required to pay the fines through netbanking before the next 15 days. 
 
The move, apart from helping cashless transactions see the light of the day in the commercial capital of the country will also help the constable in identifying repeat offenders and the greatest of them all- help in reducing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=corruption">corruption</a>.

Caught breaking traffic in Mumbai? Get ready to pay
the fine by card now!

In what has raised security concern and high alert in the sky of Mumbai are five unidentified objects. Looking like a bunch of parachutes, these flying objects were noticed on Saturday evening by a <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword> pilot before take off. 
 
As per a PTI news report, on alerting the Mumbai airport's Air Traffic Control, police became extra cautious. 
 The matter has also been brought to the notice of Mumbai's <keyword id="173458" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="joint-commissioner">Joint Commissioner</keyword> of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti. 
The police, however, is yet to register a case since no complaint has been received. 
 
"Since no one has filed a complaint with us, we have not registered any case as of now,"DCP, Zone 8, Virendra Mishra told the news agency.

What’s that up in the sky? Unidentified objects  spotted in Mumbai sky

Mumbai's police force was late to <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, but it has made up for lost time since joining last month with a series of pun-filled <keyword id="6406419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tweets">tweets</keyword>. 
 The term "<keyword id="36730" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-Police">Mumbai Police</keyword>" was trending on the social media site in India on Wednesday after the commissioner's official account posted its latest warning, to mark anti-drugs awareness week. 
 
"If you roll, we will weed you out," read the @CPMumbaiPolice tweet, which was quickly re-tweeted more than 1,000 times and won praise from Indian Twitter users 
 
"Mumbai police account is giving Twitter stand-up comedians a good run for their money," posted one user. 
 
Another tweeted: "Ok, Mumbai Police just killed it. The rest of you, go home." 
 
 
 
The Mumbai police commissioner's account has grown to have at least 22,000 followers since launching alongside the force's other official account, @MumbaiPolice, on December 27. The latter has more than 30,000 followers. 
 
Wednesday's tweet wasn't the first by police in the western Indian city to have caught Indian netizens' imagination with its use of humour to get across a serious message. 
 
"Your creepy comments on her photo will get you a long date with us," read a tweet from the commissioner warning against posting inappropriate or offensive comments online. 
 
"Giving out your personal details to strangers may land you in a 'web' of problems," was another post put out to promote their online security campaign. 
 
The force's traffic awareness week, also earlier this month, was marked with some puns as well, including a tweet which read: "Helmet or Hell-met. Choose Wisely." 
 Deputy commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni told AFP that the twin accounts were being run by Indian content marketing and digital media agency <keyword id="3221909" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Trivone-Digital-services">Trivone Digital Services</keyword>. 
 
"The tweets are approved by police first," he said.

Mumbai Police's witty tweets are taking Twitter by storm!

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> suggested that India’s national capital use drones to monitor water logged areas of the city to reduce traffic congestion and conduct water harvesting. </li><li>In Mumbai, the <keyword id="66416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Western-Railways">Western Railways</keyword> are also using drones to monitor train tracks that are prone to flooding. </li><li>The government will use contractors to deploy camera drones, which will send back pictures from areas deemed vulnerable to <keyword id="52295" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="waterlogging">waterlogging</keyword> and flooding. </li></ul>Every year the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-mystery-of-indias-erratic-monsoon-can-be-found-in-the-indian-ocean/articleshow/69215027.cms">monsoon rolls in</a> and India’s major cities, Mumbai and Delhi, are left flooded and water logged in the aftermath. Underpasses are submerged, potholes turn into mines that cars have to navigate through; and lack of drainage systems turns roads into swimming pools. This year, the <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/delhi-high-court-suggests-use-of-drones-to-identify-water-logging-sites-in-city-during-monsoon-2231843.html">Delhi High Court</a> suggested that the city rope drones to identify and keep an eye on the areas in the city that are vulnerable to excessive water collection. This will help take care of traffic congestion as well as water logging, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/drone-cams-to-help-wr-stay-on-track-during-rains/articleshow/69299444.cms">The Western Railways</a> in Mumbai too has learnt lessons from last year. It has already contracted drones to keep an eye on the Virar-Nalasopara area, which is prone to water logging. Technology vs the monsoon Drones are already used to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mumbai-must-brace-for-floods-this-week-says-a-private-weather-forecaster/articleshow/70029004.cms">predict</a> weather patterns and rainfall. But, this is the first time that the governments are using drones for traffic surveillance and keep a check on water logging. In Delhi, the two-judge bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Jyoti Singh said, "We have no hesitation in saying that all the departments would cooperate with each other to ensure that citizens are not inconvenienced during the coming monsoon." The contractors selected by the government will deploy drones with cameras to areas that are known to be vulnerable, and send images back to the data collection point. The operators at the data centers will then decide whether or not there is a risk of water logging at the moment and plan the next action. Before deploying any drones, the police has to approve the use of air space. So far, the Western Railways has only gotten permission for the Virar-Nalasopara area even though other stretches like Frant Road, Prabhadevi, Dadar and Bandra-Khar are also flood prone areas. Too much water or not enough In Delhi, the monsoon is a double-edged sword. There’s waterlogging, on the one hand, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/every-household-in-india-will-get-water-supply-by-2024-under-the-jal-jeevan-mission-says-nirmala-sitharaman/articleshow/70086396.cms">shortage of water</a>, on the other. The Delhi High Court has suggested that the city use the opportunity of monsoons to harvest water in water clogged areas, to hit two birds with one stone. The Indian Court took up the issue of water logging on its own, to point out how the resulting traffic congestion leads to loss of time. It also backs up emergency services, and idle engines at traffic jams cause massive air pollution.
