By yoshita singh New York, May 10 () Some of the Indian nationals stranded in the US due to COVID-19 related international travel restrictions will fly back home on Sunday on a non-scheduled commercial flight from New Jersey to Mumbai and Ahmedabad, even as authorities said another five flights have been arranged to repatriate others still stuck in the country. Beginning May 9, Air India has scheduled seven non-scheduled commercial flights from the US to India facilitating the return of Indian nationals, who could not travel due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Indian Embassy in Washington had said in its advisory on Wednesday night. The first flight took off from San Francisco on Saturday to Mumbai and Hyderabad. The Air India flight from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey will fly on Sunday, taking back Indian nationals to Mumbai and Ahmedabad under India's biggest ever repatriation exercise named 'Vande Bharat Mission'. Another flight from Newark will fly on May 14 to Delhi and Hyderabad. All passengers will be required to undergo medical screening before boarding the flight and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to travel. All passengers on arrival in India will be medically screened and would have to download and register the Aarogya Setu app. Further, all passengers will need to undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in India in institutional facilities on payment basis as per the protocols framed by Government of India. Highly placed sources in the Indian Consulate in New York said that it "has been a relentless and non-stop work" to coordinate the repatriation exercise and authorities "are going out of their way to make sure not even one seat on the flight goes vacant" since a large number of Indians are stranded in the US due to various reasons and they are "desperate" to go home. Priority is being given to stranded passengers, terminally-ill patients, passengers with medical concerns and students. The sources said that while flights from New Jersey were only supposed to take passengers from states that fall under the jurisdiction of the Consulate in New York, special arrangements have been made to ferry four terminally-ill patients from Houston. Apart from the two flights from New Jersey, two flights have been scheduled from Chicago on May 11 (to Mumbai and Chennai) and May 15 (Delhi and Hyderabad). The solo flight from Washington DC on May 12 will fly to Delhi and Hyderabad. Sources said that some people who had initially registered to return to India on the flights later balked and changed their plans as they did not want to undergo the two-week mandatory quarantine on arrival in India. Sources said the repatriation exercise could be expanded to countries where there is high demand. Under the 'Vande Bharat' Mission, India has already repatriated its citizens from the Gulf and the UK. Nearly 15,000 Indians are expected to return on special Air India flights from 12 countries in the coming days. The sources said efforts were being made to reach out to the Indians stranded in the US. The Indian Consulate here has been assisting several students by helping them with accommodation and essential services after their university and college dormitories closed down. Indian Consulate sources said they were facing a number of challenges in the repatriation exercise. Every situation is critical and needs attention and we are making sure there is timely help available for all."Around 260 passengers have flown from our 8 states; destinations covered so far are Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi from Chicago," he said."In phase II, we are covering Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal - through New York - Bangalore, and Kochi from San Francisco. Flights to Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad will be from Chicago"."The proportion of all consulates is the same. The reason for special flights from San Francisco, Chicago and New York is because Air India hubs are there. The closest hub for our Consular area comprising 8 states; Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Nebraska, is Chicago," Mahajan said."At this point, we have the constraint of sending people only to some destinations that have domestic flights and quarantine requirements. The constraints are internal in India due to no domestic travel until May 31 for now," he said."Also, at this point, nothing can be said about the resumption of commercial flights," Mahajan said.A total of seven flights from the US will be a part of the second phase break down.Two flights are scheduled to depart from San Francisco, one from DC, two from Chicago and other two from New York.Mahajan said "it has been a relentless and non-stop work" to coordinate the repatriation exercise and we are making sure not even one seat on the flight goes vacant" since a large number of Indians are stranded in the US due to various reasons and they are "desperate" to go home.Priority is being given to stranded passengers, terminally-ill patients, passengers with medical concerns and students.As of now, the flights are limited to Indian nationals only, who would have to reimburse the Indian government for the one-way ticket.The Consulate has no discretion to make exceptions for the OCI cardholders or Indian-Americans needing to fly back to India.All passengers on arrival in India will be medically screened and would have to download and register the Aarogya Setu app.Further, all passengers will need to undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in India in institutional facilities on payment basis as per the protocols framed by the Government of India. The pulsating, throbbing, highly-energetic and the never-say-die <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> is blessed with an unbeatable charisma. The mega Mumbai is now on the threshold of receiving something from <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword>. Borrowing the idea of <keyword id="67784" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Square">Times Square</keyword>, the <keyword id="6355125" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NDA-government">NDA government</keyword> is planning to turn the monumental Kala Ghoda into something that resembles the Big Apple’s gregarious and lively spot of expression. 
 
Times Square (TS) is an important landmark in NY. And so is Kala Ghoda in Mumbai. When you see what’s common between both, the list is quite long, and unique to the cities these landmarks represent. But what sets them apart is the countries they stand in. While TS is largely surrounded by those structures that boast of both capitalism and art, Kala Ghoda is clearly art and more of it. 
 
Kala Ghoda since long has been somewhat elitist in what it stands for, but then when you take a closer look, it doesn’t necessarily carry an attitude. It is a place where a commoner can meet the writer or a performer, or a painter. And, both can stay comfortably in their own places without being forced to interact. It is a cultural hub that has turned into a landmark. Kala Ghoda does not entice you the way TS does, but the temptation to visit Kala Ghoda is somewhat a tug at heart you feel. It is the difference between enticement, and the longing that sets them apart. 
 
Times Square on the other hand isn’t a Kala Ghoda, obviously. Though the Yankee razzmatazz is what you are promised as a sight when you visit, you would be surprised to see it represents far more than what it has been projected to. For an Indian who has grown seeing vast spaces of cultural expression, Times Square is usually a place that sits snugly between the powers-that-be, exploring its own expressional alleys. The attitude, leaning towards being a snob of sorts, very consumed within self. But then, everyone around the place is an equal alien, unlike Kala Ghoda where even an alien feels at home, becomes part of an installation or a performance when it is underway. 
 
NDA’s plans to turn Kala Ghoda into TS is probably a small design of a bigger, complicated plan to change the socio-political identity of the place. If done well, it may turn out to be a splendid job adding another dimension to the city. If done badly, it may stay there like sore acne, a grim reminder of why copying is not necessarily complimenting something that inspired you. 
 
Mumbai being Mumbai, it is at home with its identity of ‘Bombay’ too. It is a mystic sufi verse that only connects with the relentless pursuit of sublime joy, than strutting temptation in the face and inviting you over. Perhaps, instead of creating a TS in Mumbai, NDA should sell the idea of setting up a Kala Ghoda in USA. It will surely add some humility to the Big Apple.

Mumbai, Feb 17 () Tata-SIA joint venture airline Vistara on Monday said its codeshare pact with the US carrier United Airlines has come into effect from last Friday. The two airlines had signed the codeshare pact that allows United Airlines to book seats for its passengers on Vistara's flights in India last June. Codesharing allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless travel to destinations where it has no presence. The agreement enables United Airlines to codeshare on Vistara-operated Indian domestic flights starting February 28, Vistara said adding that passengers on both airlines have been enjoying the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer points/miles on either of the frequent flyer programmes since the beginning of February. "The US continues to be one of the biggest source markets for foreign travellers into India and the region, and this partnership allows us to provide a seamless travel offering for customers to and from the United States," Vistara Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan said in a release. The codeshare agreement enables United Airlines to put its 'UA' designator code on 68 Vistara-operated flights to 26 destinations every day, including but not limited to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi. "We are excited to offer our shared customers the option of building a seamless itinerary when planning travel to cities beyond New Delhi and Mumbai," said John Gebo, senior vice-president (alliances), United Airlines. United Airlines operates daily flights between New York/Newark and Delhi and Mumbai and also San Francisco-New Delhi. "Our relationship with Vistara opens up even more options for customers to travel between our East and West Coast hubs and multiple destinations throughout India," he added. Since February 1, members of Vistara's and United Airlines' frequent flyer programmes, Club Vistara and United MileagePlus, have been able to earn and redeem their CV Points/United MileagePlus miles when flying on either of the airlines' network, which means Club Vistara members can now earn and redeem CV Points on flights operated by United Airlines, and vice versa.
