A year-long study of the <keyword id="749867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dietary-habits" source="Orion">dietary habits</keyword> of 9,341 Australians has backed growing evidence that highly processed and refined foods are the leading contributor to rising obesity rates in the Western world. The new study, in the latest issue of the journal Obesity conducted by the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), was based on a national nutrition and physical activity survey undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and further backs the '<keyword id="15478813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="protein-leverage-hypothesis" source="Orion">Protein Leverage Hypothesis</keyword>'. First put forward in 2005 by professors Raubenheimer and Stephen Simpson, the Protein Leverage Hypothesis argues that people overeat fats and carbohydrates because of the body's strong appetite for protein, which the body actively favours over everything else. Because so much of modern diets consist of highly processed and refined foods -- which are low in protein -- people are driven to consume more energy-dense foods until they satisfy their protein demand. "As people consume more junk foods or highly processed and refined foods, they dilute their dietary protein and increase their risk of being overweight and obese, which we know increases the risk of chronic disease," said lead author Dr Amanda Grech, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the CPC and the university's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. "It's increasingly clear that our bodies eat to satisfy a protein target," added Professor David Raubenheimer, the Leonard Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. "But the problem is that the food in Western diets has increasingly less protein. So, you have to consume more of it to reach your protein target, which effectively elevates your daily energy intake. "Humans, like many other species, have a stronger appetite for protein than for the main energy-providing nutrients of fats and carbohydrates. That means that if the protein in our diet is diluted with fats and carbohydrates, we will eat more energy to get the protein that our bodies crave." Proteins are the building blocks of life: every cell in the body contains them, and they are used to repair cells or make new ones; and it's estimated that over a million forms of protein are needed to allow a human body to function. Protein sources include meats, milk, fish, eggs, soy, legumes, beans, and some grains such as wheat germ and quinoa. The University of Sydney scientists analysed data from a cross-sectional survey of nutrition and physical activity in 9,341 adults, known as the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey which was conducted from May 2011 to June 2012, with a mean age of 46.3 years. They found the population's mean energy intake was 8,671 kilojoules (kJ), with the mean percentage of energy from protein being just 18.4 percent, compared with 43.5 percent from carbohydrates and from 30.9 percent from fat, and just 2.2 percent from fibre and 4.3 percent from alcohol. They then plotted energy intake versus the time of consumption and found that the pattern matched that predicted by the Protein Leverage Hypothesis. Those who consumed lower amounts of protein in their first meal of the day went on to increase their overall food intake in subsequent meals, whereas those who received the recommended amount of protein did not -- and, in fact, declined their food intake throughout the day. They also found a statistically significant difference between groups by the third meal of the day: those with a higher proportion of energy from protein at the start of the day had much lower total energy intake for the day. Meanwhile, those who consumed foods low in protein at the start of the day proceeded to increase consumption, indicating they were seeking to compensate with a higher consumption of overall energy. This is despite the fact the first meal was the smallest for both groups, with the least amount of energy and food consumed, whereas the last meal was the largest. Participants with a lower proportion of protein than recommended at the first meal consumed more discretionary foods -- energy-dense foods high in saturated fats, sugars, salt, or alcohol -- throughout the day, and less of the recommended five food groups (grains; vegetables/legumes; fruit; dairy and meats). Consequently, they had an overall poorer diet at each mealtime, with their percentage of protein energy decreasing even as their discretionary food intake rose -- an effect the scientists call 'protein dilution'. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Over 50 milk and protein shake products are being recalled because of possible bacteria contamination.</li><li>Oatly, Stumptown, and Premier Protein are among the impacted brands.</li></ul>The US Food and Drug Administration is telling Americans <a href="https://www.insider.com/oatly-and-premier-protein-recalled-per-fda-and-lyons-magnus-2022-8">not to consume certain</a> protein shakes, milks, and coffee products manufactured by Lyons Magnus.The manufacturer initially issued a voluntary recall of over 50 products from Oatly, Premier Protein, and other brands because of possible contamination with the bacteria cronobacter sakazakii. An infection from the bacteria can cause fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infections, and could be more dangerous to immunocompromised people, the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/lyons-magnus-voluntarily-recalls-53-nutritional-and-beverage-products-due-potential-microbial">FDA said in a statement.</a>On August 10, the recall expanded to over 80 products because of cronobacter sakazakii and Clostridium botulinum, which can cause a "severe form of food poisoning," according to the FDA.Oat milk giant Oatly <a href="https://www.insider.com/oatly-and-premier-protein-recalled-per-fda-and-lyons-magnus-2022-8">previously told Insider</a> that it was asking customers to dispose of the product "out of an abundance of caution," though it hasn't shipped products with Lyons Magnus in several months.The FDA says no illnesses have been reported as the result of these items. On Thursday, the grocery chain and RxBar announced they were recalling two variations of the protein bar as they may contain trace amounts of peanuts, which were not mentioned on the list of ingredients. The affected bars include Chocolate Sea Salt and Coconut Chocolate RxBars. RxBar said it identified the potential for contamination after being contacted by consumers with peanut allergies. The impacted bars were produced over the course of six days in August, RxBar told Business Insider in a statement. "We identified the potential for peanut in these two flavors with 'Best By' dates of June 10, 2019 to June 17, 2019 after receiving contacts from consumers with peanut allergies," RxBar said in a statement. "No other RxBar flavors or RxBar products are affected by the recall."According to RxBar, no one has been hospitalized after eating one of the potentially contaminated bars. The protein bar maker said it is recalling the bars "out of an abundance of caution." "People who have an allergy to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat this product," Trader Joe's said in a statement. The Nothing Phone (2a) is available in two colour options, Black and White, just like the company’s earlier smartphones. It is available in three memory variants – 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage and 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Coming to the camera department, the Nothing Phone (2a) features a dual camera setup at the back consisting of a 50MP primary camera with OIS and a secondary 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera. On the front, the device features a 32MP selfie camera. The Nothing Phone (2a) is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging support. The smartphone comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor and is IP54 rated for water and dust resistance. Nothing Phone (2a) smartphone debuts in India, priced starting at ₹23,999

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz expects <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> to become its third biggest market in its 'Region Overseas' over the next 2-3 years with demand anticipated to remain strong for luxury products, according to a senior company executive. The Region Overseas for <keyword id="20034825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes-benz" source="keywords">Mercedes Benz</keyword> comprises 118 countries, excluding North America, Europe and China. India is the fifth largest market in the region after Japan, South Korea, Australia and Turkey. The sales gap between India and Turkey is around 8,000 units per year. "Our Region Overseas markets which encompass 118 markets across the world and India happens to be market number five for us. So you can imagine the relevance and importance it serves not only today, but also for the future of the Mercedes Benz brand," Mercedes-Benz AG Head of Region Overseas, <keyword id="20836954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sagree-sardien" source="keywords">Sagree Sardien</keyword> told reporters here. When asked about the expected timeframe to achieve the target, she stated, "We are convinced that with the way the Indian market is developing, we should see this happening in the next two to three years." Terming India a strategic market for the brand, <keyword id="20836953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sardien" source="keywords">Sardien</keyword> noted that the company has seen sales of its high-end models grow in double digits for the last couple of years and expects the same to continue this year and beyond. She noted that the company will add 12 new models, including three battery electric vehicles, in the market this year. The company also plans to tap smaller cities as it looks to establish sales outlets in 10 new locations ranging from Jammu to <keyword id="19910725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kottayam" source="keywords">Kottayam</keyword> to scale operations, Sardien stated. Mercedes-Benz India reported its highest ever sales of 17,408 units in 2023. Sardien said the electrification journey in India is picking up slowly for Mercedes-Benz with 4 per cent of total sales in the country coming from EVs. "I completely believe that we will see a double-digit (growth) in electrification for our product range within this market," she said. "Customers' preferences are obviously at a much slower pace than the demand we expected," she said adding the company would go according to the transformation of customers. Sardien noted that the company will not change its strategic direction. "It is clear that the future is electric for us, but we ensure that we cater for our customers' changing preferences and where market conditions are actually allowing," she said. When asked about the potential of the overall luxury car market in India, Sardien said it can touch 1 lakh unit mark probably by the end of this decade. "But I think there are some fundamental things that need to happen in the market and it is highly dependent on how customers transition here between the combustion engine and the battery electric vehicle architecture," she added. The luxury car market in India is around 47,000 units per annum and remains a miniscule part of the overall passenger vehicle segment which crossed the 41 lakh units mark last year.
