His successful anti-poverty campaign through the Grameen Bank became a model which was replicated across continents. He had been in a protracted row with Hasina's government due to obscure reasons while authorities initiated a series of investigations against him after she came to power in 2008. Bangladesh authorities launched a review of the statutory Grameen Bank's activities in 2011 and fired Yunus as its founding managing director on charges of violating the government retirement regulation. The textile and garment industry, which accounts for over 80 per cent of Bangladesh's total export earnings and contributes approximately 11 per cent to the nation's GDP, has been hit hard. This industry contributes significantly to export earnings and employs millions. Following the unprecedented anti-government protests, which reached a crescendo on August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country. She landed in India on August 5 and is currently staying there. The two-month-long anti-quota protests have led to widespread demonstrations, curfews, and violence. This unrest has not only disrupted factory operations but has also caused significant economic losses. Factories were forced to close, and with the peak season for Christmas shipments and the booking of next season's orders upon us, the timing of the unrest has exacerbated the crisis. Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, the newly elected president of the BGMEA, mentioned that the goal of reaching nearly USD 45 billion in exports this year may not be achieved. He attributed this to disruptions in both export activities and production. "I think this is a temporary crisis and we will tide over it. The exact magnitude of the losses will be known later, but yes, there has been an impact," he told PTI. Echoing similar sentiments, former cabinet minister and president of BGMEA, Gholam Sarwar Milon, said the garment industry has been badly hit by both the political unrest and the floods, as both production and the supply chain of raw materials have been severely affected. "The crisis in the garment industry is unprecedented. Production is nearly 15-20 per cent less than the corresponding period last year. Several orders have dried up as investors and order suppliers are wary about investing. Several small factories have either closed down or are working on sub-contracts for big factories," he told PTI. According to BGMEA sources, out of 3,000 major and small garment factories in Bangladesh, nearly 800-900 have closed since last year. "The big factories have survived, but the small and medium factories have borne the brunt. If the situation persists, it will worsen further," he said. Milon suggested that the garment industry needs to diversify into making jute bags and other high-end clothing and also look for new markets. The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association has projected losses of around USD 58 million. The impact on the industry is compounded by the recent flooding, which has further disrupted logistics and exacerbated the economic fallout. Bangladesh's main port, Chattogram, through which more than 90 per cent of the country's international trade transits, has become a focal point of the chaos. The port's operations were paralysed during the political unrest, leading to significant delays in shipments. "The industry has incurred huge losses in the last few months. In 2014, during political unrest, we suffered a similar situation. It then took us three years to return to the previous state. Hatem feels that if the situation is not overcome soon, there is a growing perception that foreign investors might look at new markets in other South Asian nations. "However, other South Asian markets don't have the infrastructure like Bangladesh, which has such huge production capacity," he said. The garment industry's workforce, which employs over 4 million people directly and nearly 15 million indirectly, with a significant proportion of women, faces mounting uncertainty. The sector's remarkable growth over the past two decades-from USD 5 billion in exports in 2001 to nearly USD 40 billion in 2023-now stands at risk. The floods have compounded the challenges, causing damage to infrastructure and further complicating logistics. "Due to the floods, the supply chain has been badly affected. We reached a high in 2023-24 where our garment exports touched around USD 46 billion. This time it is likely to be much less," said former army major and owner of a woollen garment factory, Mahfuzur Rehman. The sector's growth from a small-scale operation in the early 1980s to becoming the world's second-largest apparel exporter, after China, underscores its strength. In the financial year 2009, Bangladesh's apparel exports were valued at USD 12 billion. By the financial year 2023-24, this figure had surged to over USD 46 billion, reflecting the industry's capacity for recovery and growth even amid adversity. In response to the crisis, the interim government, now led by Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus, has prioritised restoring order and stability. According to garment industry insiders, the path to recovery is fraught with challenges as the political instability has undermined investor confidence, and the recent flooding has further strained the already fragile infrastructure. Hundreds of students from the local madrasa also came to guard the area. After standing watch all night, they returned home in the morning. The students divided themselves into small groups and guarded the government buildings and public properties. Zakirul Islam, a resident of Chanmia Housing in Mohammadpur, said guards were posted at the gates to the housing area on Wednesday night, but residents still could not sleep due to fear. Abir Hossain, a resident of Mirpur-14, where many government officials live, says that everyone panicked when news spread that robbers had entered their housing complex. "Last night, a group of people carrying local weapons came and attacked a neighbouring house. Either they had run out of money or restricted the use of ATM cards issued by other banks," Nasir Hossain, a resident of the capital's Dhanmondi area, was quoted as saying by the paper. Managing Director of Pubali Bank Mohammad Ali said although there is no cash crisis in the banking sector, they have been unable to deliver money to booths and branches as security companies that transport money have halted services. "The security agencies that carry our cash told us that they will not provide services in the current situation," he said. Hence, banks are struggling to supply money, especially to remote branches and booths, he added. Meanwhile, political parties in the country discussed the structure of the interim Cabinet. The anti-discrimination student movement has reportedly prepared a list of 15 names in the interim government. The list will be finalised after discussions with Yunus after he returns home on Thursday. Air India operated a special charter flight at short notice despite infrastructure challenges at Dhaka Airport late last night and landed in Delhi early this morning, as per information provided by sources. One of the passengers on the flight, an Indian national, said that the situation in Bangladesh is "pretty much under control now." Speaking to ANI, the passenger, Arpit said, "It's pretty much controlled now. It's pretty much controlled. Far, much better. From tomorrow, everything is going to be working completely. Factories, offices, banks, colleges, schools. Everything's going to be okay." Asked whether he departed in a situation of panic, Arpit said, "No, no, no. It was all okay. Though the airlines have also been opened up. And I came to see my family, just the family was worried." On reports of people of a community being targeted, he said, "For Indians, it is not like that. Everything is fine. It's completely fine." Asked about the situation in Bangladesh, following weeks of violence that led to <keyword id="20024637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Hasina" source="keywords">Sheikh Hasina</keyword> tendering her resignation and left the country to arrive in Delhi, he said, "Everything is okay now, even on the roads, and highways, everything is completely fine." Arpit also mentioned that people are happy that Sheikh Hasina have left the country. "However, smart people have said that it is a mistake and they will later realize it, said Arpit stating that he would return to Bangladesh after two to three days. On being asked about people's reactions to Sheikh Hasina's resignation, Arpit said, "People were really happy. But, on the other hand, the smart people who have been politically connected, they say that they have made a mistake. Later on , they're going to realize it." Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation from her post in the wake of mounting protests on August 5. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, evolved into anti-government demonstrations. Another passenger on the plane from Bangladesh that landed in Delhi said that the situation in the country "normal". The passenger said, "I have come to India for treatment." Another passenger from Bangladesh, Souradip Roy said, "Now everything is fine there, there is no problem. A lot of massacres happened over there and many students were killed. Officially they say over 200 students were killed, however, unofficially it is more than 1000 students were killed." He said that he is on a visit to India. Another passenger from Bangladesh's Sylhet, Tanveer, said that the situation in Bangladesh is "not so good, not so bad." "Situation is not so good, not so bad. The interim government has taken the control ofthe country and we don't know what comes next. But, we hope for a better outcome." "On the 18th of July, I saw it was like war zone in Bangladesh, near my office in Uttara. And after that there was a curfew and there were army and people getting killed in front of my eyes. I even got a rubber bullet on my that hit me. I even got police that had beaten me for coming out," he added. Meanwhile, Nobel laureate <keyword id="20024384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="muhammad-yunus" source="keywords">Muhammad Yunus</keyword> has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh's interim government, Dhaka Tribune reported. Bangladesh President's Press Secretary, Joynal Abedin, made the announcement. The decision regarding the appointment of Bangladesh's interim government head was made during a meeting between President Shahabuddin and the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that there are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals of which about 9000 are students while ensuring the country that the government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka. Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that the bulk of the students returned to India in July. "We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions. There are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals there of which about 9000 are students. The bulk of the students returned in July," he said. He also said that Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval from India to come at very short notice and she arrived on the evening of Monday. "On August 5, demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that after a meeting with leaders of the security establishment, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign. At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi," he said. The External Affairs Minister also mentioned that the government is monitoring the situation with regard to the minorities living in Bangladesh. Jaishankar noted that ties between India and Bangladesh are exceptionally close. "Since the election in January 2024, there has been considerable tensions, deep divides and growing polarization in Bangladesh politics and "this underlying foundation aggravated a student agitation that started in June this year." "There was growing violence including attacks on public buildings and violence continued in July. We counselled restraint and urged the situation be resolved by dialogue, Jaishankar said in his statement in Rajya Sabha. He said that the growing violence included attacks on public buildings and infrastructure, as well as traffic and rail obstructions. "Throughout this period, we repeatedly counselled restraint and urged that the situation be defused through dialogue. Similar urgings were made to various political forces with whom we were in touch," Jaishankar said.

At a press conference held at the SCBA auditorium, Khokon said, "We want to maintain a positive relationship with the people of India. Please arrest Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who fled the country, and send them back to Bangladesh." He also accused Hasina of causing numerous deaths in Bangladesh, adding, "Sheikh Hasina has killed many people in Bangladesh." Several pro-BNP lawyers were present at the conference. Khokon, who is also a joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), urged against declaring a state of emergency and demanded the resignation of Supreme Court judges involved in political activities and corruption within a week, Dhaka Tribune reported. He also called for the resignation of state law officers, including Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, and the heads and officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), as they were appointed by the Hasina-led government. Additionally, Khokon demanded the release of political prisoners. Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina, on August 5, tendering her resignation from her post in the wake of mounting protests. On Friday, Bangladesh's interim leader Yunus announced the portfolios of his 16-member council of advisors and named a former top diplomat to head the foreign ministry. The Nobel laureate's first task is to bring stability to Bangladesh after he responded to a call by student protesters for him to temporarily lead the country following weeks of deadly anti-government demonstrations against the government led by Sheikh Hasina.

Bihar reported 233 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday as its tally for the dreaded disease shot up to 4,831, the health department said. Significant numbers of cases were reported from north Bihar districts such as Darbhanga, Samastipur, Supaul, East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Purnea, Saran and Kishanganj. South of the Ganges, the spike was notable in Munger, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur and Kaimur. Four people tested positive in Patna district. No fresh casualties were reported in the state where the death toll remained at 29. Khagaria and Begusarai have reported three casualties each while Patna, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Sitamarhi and Siwan have accounted for two fatalities each. Besides, one death each has been reported from Araria, Bhagalpur, Jamui, Jehanabad, Madhepura, Munger, Nalanda, Nawada, East Champaran, Rohtas, Samastipur, Saran and Sheohar. With 273 cases each, Khagaria and Patna are the worst-hit districts in the state where all the 38 administrative units are affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Other badly affected districts are Begusarai (254), Bhagalpur (226), Madhubani (217) and Rohtas (230). Only 15 of the state's 38 districts still have total cases below 100. The state's COVID-19 tally has risen by more than 4,000 in the last one month, though it began reporting cases in March. The spike has been attributed to a large number of migrants, carrying the infection, returning by Shramik Special trains and other modes of transport. Till Friday, the number of migrants testing positive since May 3 was 3,311. A major chunk of them happened to be returnees from Delhi (795), Maharashtra (778), Gujarat (538), Haryana (295), Uttar Pradesh (187), Rajasthan (127), West Bengal (113), Telangana (108) and Punjab (98). State regulations around microloans differ, and before you do anything, you need to check if investing in microloans is even a possibility for you. <h2>The bottom line</h2>Whether you want to invest in securities, startups, or microloans, you should always do so with liquid money.
