The annual <keyword id="19968257" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monsoon" source="keywords">monsoon</keyword> woe of <keyword id="20724852" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crocodiles" source="keywords">crocodiles</keyword> leaving the safe confines of Vishwamitri <keyword id="20474644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="river" source="keywords">river</keyword> and entering <keyword id="20605721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="residential-areas" source="keywords">residential areas</keyword> of <keyword id="19906863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat" source="keywords">Gujarat</keyword>'s <keyword id="19972060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vadodara" source="keywords">Vadodara</keyword> city aided by <keyword id="22338751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flooded-streets" source="keywords">flooded streets</keyword> is being witnessed again this year, with 21 of these <keyword id="21492837" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reptiles" source="keywords">reptiles</keyword> getting rescued last month, an official said on Sunday. The river, 17 kilometres of which pass through Vadodara, is home to some 300 crocodiles and an encounter with these reptiles is a common occurrence for those living in areas along its banks, the official said. "While rescue of crocodiles from residential areas near the bank of Vishwamitri river continues throughout the year, the number rises significantly during monsoon. In June, four crocodiles were rescued and released back into the river. The number rose sharply to 21 in July," informed Range Forest Officer (RFO) Karansinh Rajput. "Many parts of the state witnessed heavy rainfall in July, flooding low lying areas. With residential areas coming up on both sides of the Vishwamitri river, the sighting of crocodiles on the streets of the city have also increased. These crocodiles also use a canal network to move from one water body to another. Some are found in lakes connected to the river, such as Ajwa on the outskirts of Vadodara," the official explained. However, he added that wild animals do not prefer to leave their territory and these crocodiles like to return to the river, which they leave when it is in spate. <keyword id="20112352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wildlife" source="keywords">Wildlife</keyword> activist Hemant Vadhwana said crocodiles also use the storm water drain network at times to come into the residential areas of the city, though no such case has been reported so far this year. "Such instances were reported during the floods of 2019. This time, we have rescued mostly small crocodiles, and that too from near the river banks," he added. The mugger crocodile, the species found in Vadodara, is a medium-to-large species, with an adult male reaching up to 4.5 metres (18 feet) in length and with weighing around 450 kilograms, as per the <keyword id="20392082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wildlife-institute-of-india" source="keywords">Wildlife Institute of India</keyword>. It has a distinctive aspect, which is that it is the most alligator-like of all crocodile species, with juvenile's generally having a light tan colouring with some black cross-banding on the body and tail, while adult specimens are mostly grey to brown, as per information from the WII.

Instead of turning the dog into a snack, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-crocodiles-steal-dinner-cheetahs-africe-national-park-2023-5">crocodiles</a> appeared to usher it to safety. Researchers published images of the event in the August edition of <a href="https://threatenedtaxa.org/index.php/JoTT/article/view/8551/9490" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Journal of Threatened Taxa</a>. They were studying the behavior of mugger crocodiles in the Savitri River in Maharashtra, India. They may have been full or felt too exposed to ambush the prey. Or they might have had negative experiences trying to eat dogs in the past, he said. "You see these cost-benefit analyses occur in nature all the time when it comes to the ecology of feeding," Murray said. He doesn't think the animals were displaying empathy, as the researchers suggest. Some areas of coastal India and Sri Lanka have large populations of mugger crocodiles living near people, leading to some of the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-46983559" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highest frequencies</a> of attacks on humans anywhere in the world, Murray said. "So I find the compassion of crocodilians highly unlikely." But he does agree with the paper's authors that humans often underestimate <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crocodiles-are-drawn-to-the-sound-of-human-babies-crying-2023-8">crocodiles' cognition</a>. Murray knows of instances of crocodilians using sticks to lure birds to land on them and engaging in communal feeding, helping other members of a group get food. He's also seen crocodilians seem to learn from past experiences. "I think some of those things are predominantly anecdotal, obviously, and I have some of those anecdotes for myself," Murray said. "So I think that their cognitive ability — of assessing what's around and their memory — is far better than I think we give them credit for," he said. "They're not just mean, lumbering reptiles," he said. But they're likely not taking pity on dogs in distress, either.

India’s Civil Aviation Department and the Gujarat government have been working on a plan to build a seaplane terminal near Pond 3, also known as Magar talav (crocodile pond). The seaplane terminal will connect the Sardar Patel statue site with other cities in Gujarat. India launched the seaplane service with much fanfare last year and was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi.
