Mumbai, June 22 2020: The curated streaming service MUBI has announced that it will be bringing over 200 new Indian films, including titles from acclaimed experimental director Amit Dutta to its <keyword id="7908455" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MUBI-India">MUBI INDIA</keyword> channel starting next month. Partnerships with local distributors including AP International, FilmKaravan, GoQuest, Matra Publications, NFDC, Niv Arts, Shemaroo and Vista India will expand MUBI INDIA’s line-up of new and classic regional cinema to show more films in Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati and other languages to truly represent the diversity of filmmaker talent across India. A collaboration with one of India’s most prolific directors, Amit Dutta, will see the filmmaker’s acclaimed library of films start showing on MUBI in July. He also has an odd habit of promising Sophie things that he clearly cannot afford.Then, one night, unable to handle the social demands of his environment, Callum disappears into the night leaving Sophie stranded.These moments are shown through the flashbacks and nightmares of a much older Sophie, who is now a filmmaker living in New York City. Sophie's memories are frequently shown alongside inserts of holiday footage that she captured on a camcorder. The old grainy footage helps to reveal new details about the pair, as well as the future that is ahead of them. The film's brilliant third act suggests their holiday is the beginning of the end of their relationship. Below its simmering tension, "Aftersun" is a story about childhood memories and how they evolve and change shape in our minds, as well as the ways in which memories inform the way we live and love in the present.The film is a remarkable debut by Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells, who writes and directs. Wells possesses an acute ability to capture mood and moment without laboring a point or forcing the pace of a scene. Instead, "Aftersun" unfurls in a way that is both natural and breezy, yet deeply haunting, similar to the work of modern masters like Lucrecia Martel and Eliza Hittman. Paul Mescal is excellent as Callum. He is perfect on every beat, showing a range of subtle but profound emotions through movement rather than dialogue. He also nails a Scottish accent. It was mid-January 2019, the start of a new semester. He should have been studying, perhaps, but instead, he was pondering what movie to watch. There were simply too many options, Dwarica recalled. So he turned to his friend with a suggestion: "What if I made a place for people to figure out what the hell to watch?" A few days later, Dwarica launched an Instagram account called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thefilmzone/">the Film Zone</a> to give movie and television recommendations through stills and videos. The account has since expanded to post behind-the-scenes content and host live Q&amp;As with directors such as M. Night Shyamalan.Today the 24-year-old has over 1.2 million followers and has struck partnerships with the likes of Hulu, Tubi, and Saint Laurent to promote upcoming content. He's currently working on a post about how silent films influenced people like Jackie Chan and Wes Anderson.In an interview with Insider, Dwarica reveals the strategies he used to grow the account and strike key partnerships.<h2>He posted at least two times a day to stay visible and keep up with demand </h2>Dwarica wanted to study film in college. Born in New Jersey, Dwarica also lived in Guadalajara, Mexico, before returning to the US with his family around the age of 14, settling in San Antonio, Texas. He studied advertising in college because his parents told him it would help him land a job. Spoiler alert: It didn't.So, he combined his knowledge of advertising with his passion for film, dedicating more time to the Film Zone throughout his final year in college, posting poignant images, quotes, and behind-the-scenes content at least twice times a day.After graduating from UT Austin in December 2019, Dwarica started working on the account full time, amping up his output to meet fans' demand. "We're still limited to the same 24 hours in a day, but there's so much stuff being thrown at us. He would go on LinkedIn, find out who worked in the advertising and social departments. Then he cold-messaged them asking to chat for 15 minutes about why the Film Zone was a good place to park ad revenue to reach a large audience of Gen Zers and millennials. His elevator pitch: "I've got the people here - let's see if we can work out a deal."The cold messaging strategy worked, and to date, the Film Zone has made eight advertising partnerships including with AppleTV and Hulu. Companies can pay to be featured as a highlight story at the top of the Instagram account, with the highest-paying company receiving the most visible spot. Right now the number one spot is taken by streaming service Tubi. For reference, Mubi has 100,000 subscribers, while Netflix has 75 million.So how has Mubi found success in a Netflix world? In part, it's because Mubi thinks of films as something distinct from "video," or "content," CEO Efe Cakarel tells Business Insider."We used to have this all-you-can-eat buffet, similar to Netflix but for independent films," Cakarel says. But a few years ago, Cakarel realized that people don't consume movies the same way they do TV shows. Searching Netflix for a new show might be annoying, but once you have found it, you can settle into tens of hours of binge-watching before you go back into research. With movies, it's more painful, since you have to start that search again every two hours. In other words, too much choice can be a burden.That's when Cakarel decided to shift Mubi's $4.99 per month service to a heavily curated model."We have the rights to thousands of films per country," he explains. But as a Mubi subscriber, each country's curatorial team picks 30 films every month you can watch (one is added and one removed every day). "While the same levels of consumption may not be achieved once we overcome this pandemic, there is definitely a new and higher normal that is likely to be established when it comes to time spent on OTT platforms," Girish Menon, Partner and Head, Media and Entertainment, KPMG in India told Business Insider. Moreover, Menon believes consumers are likely to develop a habit of consuming video online during lockdown which would later drive subscription growth. However, According to Karan Bedi, MX Player, OTT platforms might witness some immediate dip post lockdown, but the overall base and average time spent would continue the rise. With shooting of new TV series being delayed and movie theatres closed, services with large, legacy libraries and fresh content, have an inherent advantage. “A new normal has been witnessed as consumers adapt to the evolving situation of the pandemic. We feel this pattern will stay as it is in the post-COVID-19 era as well and perhaps there will be some incremental change in the overall user growth,” Aparna Acharekar, programming head of ZEE5 India. Ferzad Palia, who heads Voot Select in India too thinks the same. Rohit Paranjpe who heads SugarBox Networks believes new content will continue to enthuse people. The pressure on OTT services to release new content more frequently may also go up. Also, OTT players too should not be happy just retaining users and will have to engage them more. Apart from films, KPMG in a report suggested OTT platforms look at gaming as an extension to ecosystem offerings. “OTT will look to bring their consumer’s value in other areas: from aggregating other third party content providers who are not competing with them to promoting and pushing other adjacent services, like fitness and food delivery apps, and education platforms,” said Lior Friedman, VP - global partnerships and strategy at Amdocs Media. Aside from offering the publishing platform like Amazon and Fictionpress.com, Wattpad has created a community for writers. There are forums and contests to engage with peers around the world. Winners of these contests have been known to find publishers. "My Life with the Walter Boys" by Ali Novak, "The Kissing Booth" by Beth Reekles, and "Nothing Left to Lose" by Kristy Moresely, found publishers for the paperback versions through Wattpad, according to a review on another online publishing platform Odyssey. Novak’s work, for instance, had 33 million reads even before it got published, <a href="https://www.amazon.in/Life-Walter-Boys-Ali-Novak/dp/1402297866">according</a> to Amazon. But this offering is significant because of the focus on movies, which have seemed to fall a bit out of favor in the era of binge-watching TV shows.As Netflix has moved toward original content, the focus has been on bulking up its TV shows.
