<p>One of those entrepreneurs is Vivek Sharma. After a year of tremendous growth, investors have rewarded his company, <a href="http://movableink.com/">Movable Ink</a>, handsomely with an $11 million Series B round led by Intel Capital.</p>
<p><keyword id="1743877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movable-Ink">Movable Ink</keyword> offers subtle, real-time updates to emails once they've been sent. Other investors include Contour Venture Partners, Metamorphic Ventures, ff Venture Capital, Silicon Valley Bank, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich &amp; Rosati, and Silicon Valley wunderkind, Sahil Lavingia. The company has raised $12.3 million to date.</p>
<p>At the end of 2011, Moveable Ink was a team of five that generated just $2,000 annually. It was pitching its magic email product to the wrong people – small startups that take a long time to onboard and are only willing to pay peanuts.</p>
<p>In 2012, Sharma and his co-founder Michael Nutt decided to change their strategy. The pair started attending email conferences where digitally savvy CMOs frequented. They came armed with a sample Moveable Ink email on their phones. They'd describe their product to the CMOs there who couldn't believe their eyes. Moveable Ink's emails included things like weather forecasts that changed based on the recipient's location, and recent tweets that changed in the person's email as new updates came through.</p>
<p>The first big account Moveable Ink landed was Electronic Arts. Now it has signed on hundreds of brands including Starbucks, American Eagle Outfitters, Barclays, Verizon and RadioShack. Sharma's company now has 24 people and its annual revenue run rate is in the millions. Sharma expects his team will be 60 people by year-end.</p>
<p>Below is a sample of Moveable Ink's magical emails. Food delivery company Seamless sent this to customers with local weather for the following three days based on where the user was when the email was opened. It also had a call-out when there as inclement weather that Moveable Ink generated in real-time. The message read, "Don't get drenched. Order in!"</p>

Magic Email Startup Movable Ink Raises $11 Million After Growing Revenue From $2,000 To Multiple Millions

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Getting a <keyword id="11930697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tattoo" source="Orion">tattoo</keyword> can be intimidating, but there are ways to spot bad ink on the horizon.</li><li>Insider spoke with <keyword id="12361673" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tattoo-artist" source="Orion">tattoo artist</keyword> Kelly Killagain about what makes a bad tattoo and how to avoid one.</li></ul><p>Whether you're getting your first tattoo or your twentieth, there's always the chance that it might not turn out the way you expect.</p><p>Insider recently spoke with <a href="https://www.kellykillagain.com/">30-year-old tattooer Kelly Killagain</a> of <a href="https://www.777tattoos.com/">777 Tattoos</a> in Manahawkin, NJ, about that exact problem. She's been working in the industry since 2012 and has become known for her line work and black-ink designs.</p><p>As she noted, there are plenty of steps you can take both before and during your appointment to ensure that you don't get a tattoo you dislike. Here's what she recommends.</p><h2>A 'plethora of factors' can lead to a bad tattoo, according to Killagain</h2><p>As Killagain told Insider, a tattoo could be bad because it's "technically done poorly," with lines that aren't connected, messy shading, and more.</p><p>But you might also dislike your tattoo if it doesn't look the way you envisioned it going into your appointment.</p><p>"Other people might look at it and think, 'Well that's a perfectly fine tattoo,'" Killagain said. "But if you leave a shop getting something that didn't meet your expectations, that could also be a bad tattoo."</p><h2>If you haven't researched your tattoo artist or studio, you've made a mistake</h2><p>"People will walk into a shop based on a recommendation, which is nice, but they might not look at a portfolio," she said, explaining that art samples are the best way to understand a specific artist's work.</p><p>Killagain, for example, typically does line work, dot work, and stippling - all with black ink.</p><p>"In the past, it was very common for people to walk into a studio and get any kind of tattoo. As a tattooer you just had to be up for anything," she said. "But now there are quality artists specializing in very specific styles."</p><p>That being said, there are a few things to look out for when researching artists, according to Killagain, including "overly edited images" with blurred sections and "weird cropping."</p><p>"I always suggest zooming in on <keyword id="11901571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tattoos" source="Orion">tattoos</keyword>, especially on Instagram," she said. "Tattoos can look great from certain angles or from far away, so really get in there and look to see. Are the lines clean and crisp, or are they shaky? If there's shading, is it smooth?"</p><p>Similarly, Killagain says "good tattooers" will post pictures of healed tattoos on their Instagram page or story highlights to show how their work looks over time.</p><p>Finally, according to Killagain, you'll want to take note of the artist's availability.</p><p>"If someone is always available and they don't have clients, that might not be a good sign," she said. "I think a lot of people aren't willing to wait for the artist they want to work with, so they instead go with a second or third choice."</p><h2>You don't want to get a tattoo in a studio that's unsanitary</h2><p>Not only should you feel "comfortable" in a tattoo shop, according to Killagain, but you should also feel safe in regards to cleanliness.</p><p>"If you're the first tattoo of the day, you might not be able to witness the cleaning process," she said. "But typically an artist should be sanitizing the whole area, and using disposable items."</p><p>"Some people are surprised when I put bottle bags over my soap and alcohol, and tell me that other artists don't do that," she continued. "But it's part of cross-contamination. Anything an artist touches needs to be covered."</p><div type="image" title="A person gets a tattoo on their arm." height="1003" width="1338" msid="87652346" hostid="261"></div><h2>Most importantly, don't wing it when it comes to decisions about your tattoo</h2><p>"A lot of people might not realize how much a tattoo might move with the body once it's on you," she said, using forearm tattoos as an example. "At rest, it's going to look one way. When your arm is out, it'll look another way."</p><p>"Keeping that in mind is going to help you pick a placement you're happy with," she added. "Trust your artist."</p><p>Still, Killagain noted that you should also trust yourself.</p><p>"People get shy about speaking up, but there's nothing wrong with doing so," she said. "I personally don't think people are being a pain if they want to move something or adjust something. It's your body, and the stencil is the most movable, adjustable part of the process."</p>

Signs you're about to get a bad tattoo, according to a professional tattoo artist

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Movable Ink</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>When <a href="https://movableink.com/">Movable Ink</a> CEO V</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">ivek Sharma first met his cofounder, he could go months without seeing another startup entrepreneur in New York City.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Doing a startup here was unusual," he says. "Foursquare and Etsy did carry the torch a little." </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Five years after Sharma started Movable Ink in 2010, he's still a bit unusual, even though there's a bumper crop of startup founders in New York. That's because he has carefully built a profitable company, refusing to fall into the cycle of raising easy money and then torching it. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Movable Ink, which creates emails that can be updated in real-time after they are sent, has been profitable since the first quarter of 2015, and boasts an annual run rate of $20 million, a 90% increase over last year. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Contrast this picture with the end of 2011, when Movable Ink was a team of just five people, and was generating $2,000 annually.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sharma credits Movable Ink's five-year rise to profitability to a combination of prudent money management (the company has only raised $12.3 million total, which is relatively small compared to the hundreds of millions other startups have raised), and explosive growth led by a refocusing of the company in 2012.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"At first we thought startups were going to be easy to sell to," Sharma says. "But small companies weren't the best place to be. They were very fickle." When starting out, companies often have the tendency to take the path that is easier, Sharma says, and Movable Ink's team thought it would be faster to close deals with smaller companies. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But it didn't stick. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Movable Ink</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>At the end of 2011, with only a couple hundred dollars in revenue per month, Sharma told himself if things didn't turn around in a few months, he would find himself a "real job." It was the fourth startup Sharma had been a part of, and he didn't want to see another one fail.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then Movable Ink struck a deal for a pilot program with EA for $6,000, and then a $72,000 deal with DirecTV. "We decided not to waste time with the smaller companies," he says.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We felt something change in the business," he recalls. "It was like something was dragging it forward. We had $12,000 in revenue one year and $860,000 the next." If you are selling in the wrong market, it can lead to disaster, Sharma says. Movable Ink just needed to find the right fit for its email marketing product.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But even with this explosive growth, Sharma was careful about how he spent money, and especially how he hired.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"It's easy to get into a trap when you've raised a lot of capital and are hiring people too quickly. At some point, you are just looking for bodies."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>97018</span></p><p class="caption">CEO Vivek Sharma.</p></div><p></p></div></div>One of the reasons Movable Ink was able to find success with big companies was because, in Sharma's words, most email marketing departments function like they're in the 50s.</p><p>"There's lots of planning that can take you months." Movable Ink is different. It creates a dynamic way for companies to fill their emails with content that changes depending on context.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And right now, Sharma's goal is to bring that to more and more customers. Movable Ink has added over 90 new clients </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">in the first three quarters of 2015 (bringing the total to over 300 enterprise clients).</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But Sharma says he's still completely focused on email, which he thinks has staying power, even as tools like Slack gain popularity. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Email isn't owned by anyone, like Facebook or Twitter," he says. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.97018.it/tag/real-time-web">97018</a></span></p><p class="caption">Movable Ink CEO Vivek Sharma.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In the early days of a startup, a first-time CEO should do every job, according to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/movable-ink-is-profitable-on-20-million-in-annual-revenue-2015-11">Movable Ink CEO Vivek Sharma</a>.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sharma has built his dynamic email startup into a profitable company in just 5 years, and he says part of the reason is that he understands most jobs at the company.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But there's a specific number of employees a startup reaches when trying to do too much as CEO swiftly becomes a detriment. Sharma says that magic number is 40 people.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Under 30 people, you have to do every job," he says. "You can't try to delegate too early. If you are a first-time founder, you have to learn every piece of the business at its core. I wrote the first sales deck, closed the first deals, changed the coffee, took out the garbage, and negotiated the lease," he says.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But that has to change by employee 40, otherwise you're in trouble. "At employee 40, you become a bottleneck for everything," he explains. We have a lot to learn. And there are things that that make New York different. Things you start to feel as a company scales."</span></p><p><span>Sharma built his "dynamic email" startup in New York, turning it into a profitable company in just 5 years (now with an office in the Bay Area). </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And while the challenges of creating a company away from the center of tech power are fairly obvious, there are also benefits that might surprise you, he says.</span></p><p>Sharma points to one main factor, in particular, where New York can be much better for startups: employee loyalty. "When I worked in the Bay Area, everyone was mercenary. Some people come in there and didn't care about software, they just wanted to strike it rich."</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And Sharma says the same thing is happening today.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"If you are constantly thinking about needing foosball tables and a private mixologist, it can be very detrimental to that ecosystem," he says. "Google, Facebook, Airbnb - they pay small fortunes to people." </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sharma says it can be hard to keep people. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">New York is different. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sharma says he finds that the really talented people in New York are often more committed. They've already made the choice to stay in New York, to try and build something meaningful in a particular ecosystem. That's because, as New York enterprise startup founder Ben Sesser notes, <a href="http://pando.com/2013/05/21/memo-to-this-years-yc-class-its-damn-hard-to-build-an-enterprise-company/" target="_blank">"It's damn hard to build an enterprise startup."</a></p>
<p dir="ltr">In New York City alone this past year, we've seen the government<a href="http://pando.com/2013/07/25/meet-nyc-seedstarts-first-class-of-enterprise-companies/" target="_blank"> launch a B2B accelerator,</a> the<a href="http://nyetm.com/" target="_blank"> New York Enterprise Tech Meetup</a> doubling to over 2,500 members, and MongoDB raising an enormous $150 million round at a $1.2 billion valuation, making them the<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-04/mongodb-becomes-king-of-nyc-startups-with-1-2-billion-valuation.html" target="_blank"> highest valued Internet startup</a> in New York City.  </p>
