Still, 82-year-old Ratan Tata regrets that he was not able to practise as an architect for long. Tata on Monday emphasised that despite not being able to practice architecture, he gained directly from the sense of humanism that architecture renders. "I always wanted to be an architect because it renders a deeper sense of humanism. Also, architecture has motivated me and I had a deep interest in that field. But my father wanted me to be an engineer and I spent two years in engineering. "Those years of engineering convinced me that I needed to be an architect which is where my interest really was," he said during an online seminar organised by Corpgini on 'Future of Design and Construction'. Now, the Chairman Emeritus of the over USD 100-billion Tata Group, Tata received a degree in architecture from Cornell University in 1959. Tata said that barring those two years after his graduation from Cornell, he worked in an architect's office in Los Angeles till his return to India and joining the family business. "However, I spent the rest of my life outside architecture," he said. "I never regretted being an architect. I only regret that I was not able to practise it long. "But the sensitivity that you create as an architect, the ability to put things together, the ability to run a project on the basis of a budget, the intricacies of different materials coming together… all those things are well taught in an architectural curriculum. And if someone says one wouldn't be equipped to do business as an architect (then it) is not a fair statement," he quipped.  The <keyword id="123235" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Charitable-Trust">charitable trust</keyword> owns 66% of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, which is the holding entity of all companies controlled by the conglomerate that deals in a variety of interests, ranging from salt, cars, technology and steel.

It was in 1892 that Tata Trusts was set up, in the form of the JN Tata Endowment, followed by Sir Ratan Tata trust in 1919, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 1932, the JRD Tata Trust in 1944, the Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust Jamsetji Tata Trust in 1974 and lastly, the Tata Education and Development Trust in 2008. 
 
The trust deals in healthcare, water, rural upliftment, energy, education, relief, rehabilitation and individual grants, and boasts of the creation of institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, all reputed names in their respective fields.

Ratan Tata calls Tata employees inheritors and custodians of Tata Trusts

<keyword id="3590566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="RNT-Capital">RNT Capital</keyword> Advisers, a venture fund set up by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ratan+tata&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ratan Tata</a>, is likely to lead an investment round of $100 million, or Rs 650 crore in India’s top ride hailing app <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a>. 
 
Tata may invest $60 million, while rest will be invested by New York-based hedge fund <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=falcon+edge+capital&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Falcon Edge Capital</a>. Besides, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is also in talks with other investors and looking get funding of $200 million. 
 
If the deal goes through, Ola's valuation will rise to $3.5 billion. 
 
"This new $100 million commitment (will happen) at a higher valuation,” ET quoted sources as saying. 
 <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> has invested in 30 startups earlier in his personal capacity and this Ola’s investment will be the first major transaction by RNT Capital. RNT Capital has set up a $250-million corpus with University of California Investments (UC Investments) to invest in Indian companies. UC Investments manages a corpus of $100 billion across endowment and pension funds, and announced the venture with Tata in February 2016. 
 
Ola is also planning to work with the Indian Government and introduce electric vehicles in the top cities in the next three months. 
 
ET quoted analysts and employees at Ola, saying Ola clocked about six million weekly rides on an average between September and December 2016, across all its offerings-cabs, auto rickshaws and shuttle buses. “The major source of revenues for both Ola and Uber-around 70-75% - comes from their economy services including Ola Micro, Mini and UberGo,” analysts told ET. 
 
Ola is leaving no stone unturned to fight out the increasing pressure from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a>. 
 "Since <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> has been operational for 2-3 years, investors will start asking questions related to profitability,” an analyst tracking the space told ET on the condition of anonymity.

<keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group has some great things to say about Uttar Pradesh and its government. In an interaction with the media on Monday in Lucknow, Tata stated that he was "losing his heart to this state". 
 
The businessman cum philanthropist was in the state capital to witness the signing of what has been a long-term understanding between the UP government and Tata Trusts for combined philanthropic efforts in the areas of nutrition, primary education and agriculture. 
 
Tata has promised to offer unconditional help to build Uttar Pradesh into a new city. "If there's anything we can do together to help you build this state, I will dedicate whatever time, effort or energies, personally, that it will take of me. I admire the fact you are doing great things. And I think you should consider that I am a friend of you, and your state," he was quoted saying. 
 
Thrashing the usual conceptions about the state, Tata stated that UP is often "misunderstood and underplayed", and that it will "take its place in the country and lead the way, in many ways". 
 The multi-dimensional MoU was signed by UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan, and the CEO of Tata Trusts, R Venkatraman. The signing saw some august company in the form of state CM <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhilesh-Yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> and Ratan Tata himself. 
 
As per Venkatraman, Tata Trusts will be primarily supporting UP on four programmes, namely anaemia control interventions, strengthening maternal and child health, children's education through infusion of technology and life skills training, and solar energy. 
 
CM Akhilesh Yadav stated that he was grateful for Tata's visit to the state, and promised to help Tata Trusts in every way possible. "We, in the government of UP, ask for nothing but your presence in UP. That, itself, should galvanise us, and bring about winds of change in UP," Akhilesh added. 
 
As per the MoU, Tata Trusts will be extending its support to the UP government in running poverty alleviation programmes, for employment generation, and in increasing income and infrastructure development for its citizens. 
 
All work would be monitored and overseen by a joint state-level steering committee that would comprise of representatives of both the state government and the Tata Trusts.

When the sale happens, Snapdeal's Kunal Bahl and <keyword id="396598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Bansal">Rohit Bansal</keyword> will together receive about $30 million with a similar sum to be set aside for Snapdeal's nearly 2,000 employees. <keyword id="1397792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalaari-Capital">Kalaari Capital</keyword>, one of the two early investors in the startup, is to get $30 million, while Nexus will receive twice that amount for its larger stake, they said. Kalaari's managing director <keyword id="1397790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vani-Kola">Vani Kola</keyword>, an early investor in Snapdeal, told Bloomberg that she has resigned from the startup's board. "I was done with what I needed to do,” Kola said, adding that she saw no conflict of interest. Flipkart raised $1.4 billion from Tencent Holdings Ltd., Microsoft Corp. and EBay Inc, taking its valuation at $11.6 billion.
