<ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Andrew James, the Lead Architect and senior principal at Populous, shares the story behind designing <keyword id="12701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Motera-Stadium">Motera Stadium</keyword>. </li><li>Populous is a global leading architecture design firm which has also designed sections of Lord’s as well as the <keyword id="89542" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Melbourne-Cricket-Ground">Melbourne Cricket Ground</keyword>. </li><li>Motera was possibly one of the most challenging projects as the budget was about a sixth compared to other international peers.</li></ul>The majestic Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was visualised three years ago by Populous, the same company that designed sections of the ‘home of cricket’, the Lord’s Stadium in London, and the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which was the largest cricket stadium in the world until Motera was built. And the headlines it made were superlative right from the word go. But Motera was possibly one of the most challenging projects as the budget was about a sixth compared to other international peers. Building the Motera Stadium: Behind the scenes Andrew James, the Lead Architect and senior principal at Populous, told Business Insider that the brief for Motera was simple – it has to be larger than the MCG. And having been the lead designer for the MCG as well, James got to work and designed Motera with 9,000 more seats. <div type="image" title="Designers Vision of Motera" msid="77499185" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Designers Vision of Motera&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The global architecture design firm started working on the Motera Stadium after L&amp;T approached them for a collaboration in 2017. Having worked in India before, James knew that to win the client over for this he had to make sure the Gujarat Cricket Association liked the design, they met the criteria and everything, while offering the best price. “Our design came in 20% less than the competitors. Having designed the best stadiums in the world, we knew exactly what was required and what was not,” said James. Motera Stadium - What sets it apart James said that the Motera, designed like a bowl, is a very utilitarian building. The stadium along with 110,000 seats boasts of a community indoor cricket academy, a dormitory for up to 40 athletes, six indoor practice pitches and three outdoor practice fields. It also includes four-team dressing rooms and facilities, state-of-the-art club facilities and a VIP pavilion, three practice grounds, an Olympic-size swimming pool, 76 corporate boxes and a media lounge with press rooms. Every aspect of the stadium has been built in international standards, but the differentiator remains the size of it, within a tight space. “It’s built on the earlier cricket ground but is much bigger. Just the footprints of the stadium were touching the boundaries,” said James. And there began the challenges of Motera. Along with the space crunch, Populous had to design the stadium keeping safety in manner. “With a stadium in India, the biggest fear is not just about the structure collapsing but also the sheer amount of people leaving the stadium together,” he said, and added that unlike the West, people in India don’t mind crowds. <div type="image" title="Crowd at Motera during President Trump&amp;#39;s visit" msid="77499195" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Crowd at Motera during President Trump&amp;#39;s visit&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The biggest challenge was also the budget. James shared that the budget for Motera ₹600-700 crore, whereas a stadium of the same size in England or Australia would cost six times as much. The recently announced Jaipur Cricket Stadium was set to be larger than life Jaipur is set to get the world’s third largest cricket stadium with 75,000 seats, but six years ago, the then head of the Rajasthan Cricket Association Lalit Modi had commissioned Populous to build something the world hadn’t seen before. “The stadium in talks then was supposed to be much different than how it’s being designed today. It was supposed to be smaller, with 30,000 seats but was designed to be the most exciting party venue in the world,” shared James. Populous’ idea was to recreate the stepwell culture in Rajasthan and have a stadium that was daggered into the ground. James said that the idea wasn’t just to earn money from the stadium when it holds a cricket match once a year, but instead have a venue which was beyond cricket. While the Jaipur Cricket Stadium is not on their docket anymore, Populous, which has designed more than 3,500 projects worth $40 billion in the last 30 years continues to look at several other projects in India.  The exhibition match between Asia XI and World XI in March 2020 is likely to be the first match played in the stadium. The cricket stadium will not only be utilised for national and international cricket matches but will also constitute an indoor cricket academy. <a href="https://populous.com/project/motera-cricket-stadium">According to Populous, the company designing the stadium</a>, “A community academy will be housed under the podium in the stadium, with a dormitory for up to 40 athletes, allowing students from across India and the globe to attend. The academy also has access to six indoor practice pitches and three outdoor practice fields,” Three pitches and a way to soak rain during matches Apart from being the world’s largest, the stadium will consist of three different kinds of pitches — from bouncy, spin friendly, or a mix of both — to suit the need of fast bowlers and spinners. The <keyword id="53892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cricket-Association">Gujarat Cricket Association</keyword> (GCA) which is executing the project, is preparing as many as 11 pitches. “Some pitches will be prepared with red soil, while some will be with black soil and some may have a mix of both. <ul><li>India is soon going to add one more cricket stadium in the list of 52 international cricket venues it has with the construction of <keyword id="118125" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Motera">Motera</keyword> cricket stadium set to be the world’s largest cricket ground in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. </li><li>M/S Populous, the firm that designed <keyword id="89542" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Melbourne-Cricket-Ground">Melbourne Cricket ground</keyword>, is working on Motera Cricket Stadium. </li><li>The stadium has the capacity to fit in 110,000 people at one point of time, way more than the Melbourne stadium which has capacity to fit in nearly 100,024 fans. </li></ul>Cricket-crazy Indians have much to cheer about. India is building the world’s largest cricket stadium

Ahmedabad, March 12 (IANS) The Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera will be filled up to 50 per cent of its capacity during the five-match T20I series between India and England that starts on Friday, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) said. "Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has decided to use only 50 per cent capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the five T20 Internationals to be played here between India and England from March 12, 2021 to March 20, 2021. All the COVID-19 related precautions have been taken and all standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being followed," said the GCA in its statement. "Up to 50% tickets will be issued on the online and offline ticketing platforms for these matches," GCA vice-president Dhanraj Nathwani said. The GCA further said that the stadium, which also hosted the third and fourth Tests between India and England in February and March, has been sanitised. "All COVID-19 guidelines are being strictly adhered to and special task force committees have been set up to ensure that all required safety measures are implemented and followed," said the GCA. The first T20I will be followed by the second match on March 14, the third on March 16, the fourth T20I on March 18 and the fifth on March 20.

While the newly-built Narendra Modi Stadium saw very sparse crowds for the two <keyword id="80591" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Test-matches">Test matches</keyword> that were held in February-end and early March, the <keyword id="83873" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="T20-International">T20 International</keyword> series between India and England that begins on Friday is likely to see much better crowds with over 40,000 tickets already sold, according to local officials. The 1,10,000-capacity stadium is the largest cricket stadium in the world in terms of capacity. The recent India-England Test matches were the first international cricket matches to be held after its reconstruction. "We are expecting a lot more crowd than what we saw in the Test matches. As of now, we have been able to sell over 40,000 tickets. We are expecting that the seats will be filled up for the first T20 International," said a <keyword id="53892" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cricket-Association">Gujarat Cricket Association</keyword> official. The Indian cricket board will be expecting the two new <keyword id="6354312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL" source="Orion">IPL</keyword> franchises to go for Rs 7000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore each after the bidding process begins here on Monday. It is still not clear whether the BCCI will announce the successful bidders on Monday itself after doing the technical evaluation of the bids. There are 22 companies which have picked up tender document worth Rs 10 lakh but with base price for new teams pegged at INR 2000 crore, there is expected to be only five to six serious bidders in fray. The BCCI is also allowing a consortium of up to three companies/individuals to bid for a franchise. However, in case of an individual or company, that particular entity's annual turnover should be minimum INR 3000 crore and in case of consortium, each of the three entities should have an annual turnover of INR 2500 crore. In this scenario, one of India's richest business tycoon <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> and his Adani Group are expected to bid for the Ahmedabad franchise. Adani Group, if they finally put up a bid, are the favourites to own a new franchise. Similarly, RPSG group which is headlined by billionaire Sanjiv Goenka are also considered to be serious bidders for a new franchise. Whether RPSG would have any individual or other company as a part of consortium is still not known. "Gautam Adani and Sanjiv Goenka are the biggest names in the Indian industry. They will be serious bidders. Expect a minimum bid of INR 3500 crore from the potential bidders. Don't forget that IPL broadcast rights is projected around USD 5 billion (Rs 36,000 Crore). "So the economics will work accordingly as franchises get the TV revenue share equally," a BCCI insider tracking the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity. For the record, Goenka owned the <keyword id="12377413" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune-franchise-rising-pune-supergiants" source="Orion">Pune Franchise Rising Pune Supergiants</keyword> (RPS) for two years and is also the owner of ISL franchise ATK Mohun Bagan. There has been buzz that Lancer group, which is owned by Manchester United owner Avram Glazer, has also picked up the bid document. The other notable companies which are in fray comprise Kotak group, pharmaceutical majors Aurobindo Pharma and Torrent group. The two cities that are favourites in terms of stadium capacity are <keyword id="10818893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi-stadium" source="Orion">Narendra Modi Stadium</keyword> in Motera with more than 100,000 capacity while the other is Ekana Stadium in Lucknow with 70,000 capacity. The other cities in the hunt are Indore, Guwahati, Cuttack, Dharamsala and Pune. Former India cricketer may join one of the consortium A former India opener may join one of the consortiums which is expected to be serious bidders for the new franchises. "Yes, a former India opener is ready to shell out around INR 300 crore and buy a minority stake if the consortium he is part of is able to successfully bid for a new team. He comes from a business family and he does want to invest in a cricket team. "He is a distinguished player in his own right and also understands how the franchisee universe works," the BCCI source said.
