Jacqumeus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.But as 2025 nears, the luxury landscape is proving to be more difficult to navigate, even for LVMH and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-arent-looking-great-gucci-kering-apac-slump-to-blame-2024-10">Kering</a>, both of which reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings in October."If all of these brands that are giant brands with gigantic budgets behind them are suffering this economic climate and this luxury downturn," Blanca Zugaza Escribano, a fashion and luxury consultant at Metyis, told Business Insider, "Imagine smaller brands that have way smaller resources."<h2 id="c138f4ef-aa24-4cfb-8439-dbf25775bf1a">Seize the moment or risk failure</h2>Escribano said there's been an uptick of independent brands seeking investors as a survival strategy.Earlier this year, a series of independent brands, including Vampire's Wife, a luxury British retailer beloved by Kate Middleton, Dion Lee, an Australian luxury brand that Taylor Swift has worn, and NYC-founded Mara Hoffman, found themselves on the chopping block.A combination of the slowing luxury market and the closure or decline of third-party retailers that these brands heavily rely on, took its toll.Others managed to survive by selling out, including Roksanda, the eponymous label of Serbian designer Roksanda Ilinčić, which was bought by The Brand Group in May.For independent brands, Escribano said, the thought process is "either we make it today or we're not here tomorrow."<div type="image" title="Kate Middleton departs a special reception hosted by the Gov. "It's almost like a salmon swimming upstream in a very turbulent river."Successful marketing tactics, like Jacquemus's buzzy food-inspired beauty campaigns or its mini <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jacquemus-tiny-handbag-le-chiquiti-review-2020-1">Chiquito bags,</a> which the internet couldn't get enough of in 2019, can fuel brand momentum, but it takes more to make it last and compete against heavyweights.In his interview with Le Figaro, Jaquemus offered an example, saying its store in Paris' Avenue Montaigne saw a drop in visitors over the summer as some shoppers avoided the city during the Olympics Games, although he said they weathered it."In reality, we are doing quite well considering we're the smallest house on the avenue," he said.Nevertheless, being the smallest on the avenue means a drop in shoppers can hurt more if you don't have the resources in place."You have to feed this monster of growth to scale to achieve this critical mass," Pedraza said.It's no surprise that Jacquemus is seeking an investor as "they need fast money to capitalize on this momentum," Escribano added.But finding an investor post-COVID-19 is no walk in the park either, as many feel as though they "got burned" by brands "that were just asking for money and burning through it, not really achieving sales, not achieving results, and not having great products," Pedraza said."The consumers and the investors have so many choices out there that they can afford to be very picky," he added.<h2 id="98e6d44e-cb1f-47ae-a13c-19724d62dcc6">Safety in numbers</h2>Jaquemus may be relatively small, but its decision to seek an investor has some foreshadowing with bigger stand-alone brands.In the summer of 2023, Kering acquired a 30% stake in Valentino, a historically independent brand.Rumors have been squashed of a Moncler acquistion of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burberry-turnaround-plan-new-ceo-revenues-plummet-luxury-slowdown-2024-11">Burberry</a>, the beleaguered stand-alone British brand.Burberry, which reported a 22% sales decline in the six months ending in September, faces an uphill battle to regain a competitive position in the luxury market.Nonetheless, Pedraza believes that consolidation between brands and independent brands seeking outside investment will likely persist as they confront industry-wide issues, including the rise of artificial intelligence."It's going to be harder for new brands to penetrate into the life of the consumer, to get the attention, to get the eyeballs, to get the awareness," he said.<div type="image" title="Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus attends the opening of the Jacquemus' Boutique as part of Paris Fashion Week at 27 avenue Montaigne on September 26, 2022 in Paris, France." height="853" width="1280" msid="115416178" hostid="261" sizebytes="44988"></div>But going the safety-in-numbers route and doing so by being acquired by a conglomerate is a decision with consequences.Brands have historically feared certain acquisitions, Escribano said, as it can fundamentally impact brand identity and creativity.For Jacquemus to sell out, it could still lose what Escribano said its magic, which in her view, is its head designer's ability to do "whatever he wants without having to explain his decisions or his creative choices to a board of investors which, at the end of the day, is going to limit so much of his creativity because he's going to have to think purely about business."

This includes using posts, photos, and creative works to train artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models. This has raised questions about potential bias in legal proceedings related to the platform.</li></ul>Alex Fink, CEO of the AI-powered platform Otherweb, criticised X’s lack of transparency, stating, “Unlike other platforms with vague licensing terms, X removes any ambiguity about its intentions.” <h2>Changes to blocking and safety settings</h2>Safety concerns have also escalated due to alterations in X’s block feature. Users now allegedly receive notifications that even those they block can still view their posts — though they can’t interact. This tweak is particularly alarming for users who have faced harassment on the platform. Many feel their safety is compromised, prompting them to seek refuge in safer alternatives like Bluesky, which saw a surge of 500,000 new users in just one day following the policy updates. Initially developed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky offers customizable feeds and decentralised control, which many find refreshing. With over 16 million users (and counting), it’s quickly becoming the top choice for X refugees. Threads, Instagram’s text-based app, also surpassed 275 million monthly active users by November, with 15 million new sign-ups last month alone. For many, these platforms represent a chance to escape X’s chaos while reclaiming control over their online experience. <h2>Is Fediverse the future?</h2>Experts believe the exodus from X could mark the beginning of a new era of decentralised social networks. Bluesky, built on a protocol that enables interconnected platforms, is part of the "Fediverse," which could allow users to interact seamlessly across different apps. This shift reflects growing dissatisfaction with centralised platforms that control user data, content visibility, and privacy settings. While Musk touts record-breaking engagement on X, the cracks in the platform’s foundation are evident. Critics warn that X could become a training ground for Musk’s xAI venture, leveraging user interactions to fuel lucrative AI models. But nothing has ever been precise enough to become a singular industry standard.Net promoter score has come close, but having been invented over two decades ago, new times warrant additional methods of determining brand valuation.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021-05-27-gartner-predicts-more-than-75--of-organizations-will-"> Gartner</a> validated this shift in 2021 by predicting that NPS will be obsolete within 75% of organizations by 2025.Recommending a brand is not a complex enough metric on its own to determine a brand's overall worth. Quantifiable brand trust and loyalty have been kicked around as more modernized ways to assess a brand's valuation, particularly as loyalty dissipated during the COVID-19 pandemic, usurped by convenience. Meanwhile as the cost of acquisition continues to rise, retention is a new mandate.Developing the means to quantify a brand's true value is the most important part of a marketing organization that needs to evolve.Some new disruptive thinking on brand value deserves consideration — the power of emotion. While we all know a lot about how customers behave or act, we know little about how they feel.<h2>The power of emotion — the Equinox example</h2>Emotion is the new currency driving quantifiable brand growth. So, what is emotion exactly? It's often defined as instinctive or intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning or knowledge. Emotion could be a better way to measure brand value 

In its next meeting, slated for 9th September, the GST (Goods and Services Tax) Council may decide over imposing an 18% charge on <keyword id="20157806" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="payment-aggregators" source="keywords">payment aggregators</keyword> (PAs) like <keyword id="20290089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Razorpay" source="keywords">RazorPay</keyword>, Stripe, PayU, Pine Labs, and more. Reportedly, these charges will be levied on small value transactions of up to Rs 2,000, which are made via <keyword id="22719132" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="debit-and-credit-cards" source="keywords">debit and credit cards</keyword>. Until now, all payment aggregators were exempt from GST on all transactions up to Rs 2,000. We decode what it means for you, and how it will impact your pockets. What's happening? The <keyword id="22666613" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fitment-committee" source="keywords">fitment committee</keyword>, which is made up of revenue officials from both center and states, is considering levying an 18% GST on payment aggregators. This is because officials feel that PAs are mere facilitators and intermediaries for card-based transactions, unlike banks, and thus, should be brought under GST purview. At present, they are exempt on paying GST on transaction of value less than Rs 2,000. But, if the proposal goes through in the 54th <keyword id="19994390" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Council" source="keywords">GST Council</keyword> meeting, every transaction you make through your credit or debit cards going ahead via such PAs will become costlier. Who are payment aggregators? PAs are essentially third-party service providers that let customers pay, and allow businesses to collect payments made via UPI, credit/debit cards or more. They are the interface between the customers and the merchants, allowing customers to opt for multiple, secure payment options, and also letting merchants manage and track fund collections and refunds. For their services, PAs levy a payment gateway fee, which ranges between 0.5% to 2% for each transaction. Post demonetisation in 2016, when currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were discontinued with immediate effect, the government had waived off taxes on credit and debit card transactions of up to Rs 2,000, in order to boost digital payments. If GST is levied, PAs are likely to pass on this cost to merchants. Will UPI be affected? No. Currently, UPI does not currently have a MDR, or merchant discount rate. UPI will continue to remain a lucrative option for PAs and merchants, especially for transactions under Rs 2,000, since they will not attract GST. PAs charge MDR to businesses for processing credit and debit card transactions on their behalf. What will change? The move is likely to affect small businesses the most, who thrive on multiple, low value transactions. Think of this. Say you make a payment of Rs 1,500 via your credit card on Razorpay. If the PA sets its fee at 1% of each transaction, the business will have to pay Rs 15 to the PA. But now, with the potential additional 18% GST applicable, the business will have to pay Rs 2.7 more, or about Rs 17.7 to these PAs. This might not seem much at first, but compounded over multiple transactions, might snowball into a significant cost for small businesses.

This is up from $6 billion in Q1 and $7 in Q2. The figure includes sales in both company-owned and franchisee restaurants.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-new-rewards-program-offers-free-burgers-and-mcchickens-2021-6">MyMcDonald's Rewards</a> was first introduced in the US in the summer of 2021. By the end of that year, McDonald's said over 21 million shoppers in the US had enrolled in the system. When accumulated, these can then be used to redeem free menu items.CEO Chris Kempczinski told analysts that the company's aim to reach 250 million active members by the end of 2027 was achievable. On panels and in off-stage conversations, industry insiders seemed to talk as much about the limitations as the promises of AI."I think for the first time I'm starting to hear skepticism around AI," said Ashwin Navin, CEO and cofounder of Samba TV, a TV measurement firm.In an industry that loves to show it's early to adopt new tech, it's been easy for practitioners to claim they're using generative AI to do things that aren't really new, like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-artificial-intelligence-is-used-in-marketing-strategy-2024-5">basic personalizing</a> and targeting ads, he said. "What's the marketing spin versus what's new for marketers to evaluate?"Disciples of generative AI say it can take the pain out of some of the repetitive tasks involved in analyzing data, buying ads, and matching ads to specific groups of people. Last year, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.salesforce.com/news/stories/generative-ai-for-marketing-research/">Salesforce</a> survey showed about three-quarters of marketers were or planned to use generative AI.But there's been a growing narrative in the industry that some of the new AI tech isn't much of a leap forward from what was already available."There's a potential for a generative AI solution to just be a solution in search of a problem," said Andrew Lipsman, an independent media, advertising, and commerce analyst. "An ad buying user interface is usually just a few fields of information to toggle through to set up your campaign. I'm not sure that's something that really needs to be further solved."Zaid Al-Qassab, the global CEO of advertising agency M&amp;C Saatchi, said in a recent interview with Business Insider that AI can be a distraction for clients. "The real question is, what's your business challenge?"Al-Qassab said he sees plenty of promise in the tech. After he started in the role in May, he made a set of AI tools used in one part of the company available to everyone. But people in the field say for it to transform advertising, they expect it to do more, like improve the quality of ad messaging and targeting."Let's not just think about how to cut costs; let's use it to do better storytelling," Samba's Navin said.That's starting to happen. Media companies like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nbcuniversal-using-emotional-targeting-new-gen-ai-driven-ads-2024-3">NBCUniversal</a> use AI to analyze topics in video content so advertisers can run contextual ads around that content. NBCU said ads performed up to 49% better this way.Another area AI is starting to work in is finding new potential customers. Adtech firm DoubleVerify brought a client, Diageo, on stage at Advertising Week to share its success using DoubleVerify's AI tool to help sell its spirits like Ketel One vodka while keeping costs down.Speaking on another panel, Nick Fairbairn, VP of marketing at finance app Chime, said AI helped him find unexpected media outlets to target people for a new product launch.That said, even when AI tools have had positive results, ad insiders often also spoke of their limitations.Joshua Nafman, VP of data and operations at Diageo, said that while DoubleVerify's AI tool helped boost sales, Diageo had to roll out the process one brand, ad campaign, and market at a time."We started joking, it was not test and learn, it's retest and relearn," Nafman said.Fairbairn said he sees an opportunity to use AI to match ads to individuals, but added that it was early days."I want to make sure it doesn't just look like the same ad with a different word," he said.Though enthusiasm about AI was tempered in the industry at this year's Advertising Week, there wasn't a widespread abandonment of the tech.
