According to state television, the death toll has grown to 2,862, with 2,562 people injured. The traditional mud brick buildings that were common in the area, according to rescuers, limited the odds of locating survivors because they had disintegrated. Nearly every building in the mountain village of Tafeghaghte, which is 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Marrakesh, has been destroyed due to the quake. So scientists long had to rely on people's memories — which are notoriously fallible."People have wondered about them forever," Karen Daniels, a physicist at North Carolina State University, told The New York Times. "It's one of those persistent mysteries that hang around and never quite get nailed."Because of this, earthquake lights had been thought to be a myth. But with the advent of security cameras and handheld phones, more footage has started to add weight to the belief that they do happen.For instance, mysterious bright flashes were caught on camera before the 2021 <a href="https://www.insider.com/seven-point-one-magnitude-earthquake-hit-mexico-acapulco-2021-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">earthquake in Mexico City</a>, PBS <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYaCVWgB6XQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. But the question remains: What is happening? <h2>Are these earthquake harbingers, or something else? </h2>The short answer is that we just don't know.<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/09/11/earthquake-lights-flash-explained-morocco/">Geophysicist Friedemann Freund</a> of the SETI Institute worked on a paper reviewing 65 reports of potential "earthquake lights" collected since the 1600s. He believes earthquake lights could be an elaborate form of static electricity. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-earth-tectonic-plates-billion-years-2021-2">tectonic plates</a> rub together, he told The Washington Post, this friction could create enough current to produce an electric discharge, which would explain the bright flash. But Daniels told The Times she disagrees with this explanation. "Rock on rock is not a situation where people have been able to generate large charge separation," she said. "And so it just doesn't seem like a very good explanation for what people see."The <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-are-earthquake-lights?qt-news_science_products=0#qt-news_science_products">US Geological Survey</a> (USGS) is similarly cautious about its interpretation of the events. "Geophysicists differ on the extent to which they think that individual reports of unusual lighting near the time and epicenter of an earthquake actually represent earthquake lights," per the USGS website. "Some doubt that any of the reports constitute solid evidence for EQL, whereas others think that at least some reports plausibly correspond to EQL," the website continues. There are other potential explanations for the flashes. It's possible, for instance, that early tremors shake power lines, creating arcs of electricity.Still, Daniels doesn't exclude the possibility that the flashes could be linked to the earthquakes, she told The Times. "We're comforted by things that we can understand, and we're scared by things we don't," she said, per The Times. "I think that's part of the reason we're so fascinated by this phenomenon."

Most of my nights are <a href="https://www.insider.com/hostel-things-you-should-never-do-frequent-solo-traveler">spent in hostels</a> with people my age.But earlier this year, feeling exhausted and fulfilled after a solo trip in Jordan, I longed for some relief from the constant stress of <a href="https://www.insider.com/solo-woman-van-life-safety-tips-from-someone-who-does-it-2021">traveling alone as a woman</a>. So I decided to spend my next trip traveling around Morocco on a budget bus tour with 30 other tourists, most of whom were <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-cruises-for-retirees-to-go-on-2019-5">retirees</a>, for a week. For just over $832, the eight-day "Classic Morocco" tour took us from Rabat to places like Fès, Marrakech, and Casablanca. <h2>At first, I was embarrassed to admit that I was part of a tour group</h2>Every tour group member had a big, swinging audio transceiver and earbuds around their neck, astutely listening to our tour guide, who spoke into his own little headset.We all wore big lanyards with the tour company's logo on them. I was mortified. The first few days of my trip, I tried to shrink into the <a href="https://www.insider.com/famous-movie-and-tv-locations-ruined-by-tourism-2020-2">mass of tourists</a> the best I could, fearful that I would be grouped with the likes of "people who book bus tours."Being young and an <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-travel-tips-from-flight-attendant-frequent-traveler">experienced traveler</a>, I tend to rebuke these types of tours. Without the stress of getting lost or missing <a href="https://www.insider.com/tips-for-visiting-los-angeles-without-car-using-public-transportation-2023-10">public transport</a>, I was able to focus on the historical and cultural facts that the guide prepared.Navigating the traditional markets of Morocco (known as souks) was made easier with our tour group, but where we shopped and wandered was limited. Like any big tour, we had to make our planned stops. The autonomy of wandering was lost, and sometimes, I felt we were herded into a carpet or tannery shop for far too long. <h2>I also found I loved bonding with the other tourists</h2>Through the staged theater of it all, I <a href="https://www.insider.com/feel-less-lonely-by-hanging-out-with-strangers-not-friends-2023-10">found a sense of solidarity</a> and humor with other guests. It quickly became clear that I was the youngest person on my tour, beating most people by decades. I was also the only <a href="https://www.insider.com/us-national-parks-mistakes-to-avoid-tips-from-frequent-traveler">solo traveler</a> on the trip. However, the tour group provided a built-in social network, which can be a relief when coming off of extended travel or solo adventuring. As a 23-year-old, bonding and traveling with retirees was an entirely different experience. The evenings were slow, and meals were quiet but often filled with insightful conversations (and sometimes disagreements) about current affairs and generational outlooks. My "best friends" on the trip were a man in his early 80s and his wife, both happily enjoying their retirement. Another couple in retirement gleefully showed me videos of their daughter, who was a talented hobbyist pole dancer. I suggest taking one of these tours, especially if you have time to extend your stay in the region to get a deeper feel for the culture. To get the most out of the experience, be sure to book with a company that hires local guides.If you're thinking of traveling to Morocco, it's important to keep in mind that a lot has changed since my group trip in January. In September, Morocco faced the <a href="https://www.insider.com/thousands-killed-and-missing-in-massive-moroccan-quake-2023-9">most devastating earthquake</a> the country has seen in over 60 years. Because the country is still recovering, I'd advise prospective travelers to extensively research how tourism in certain recovering areas was impacted, as well as the impacts on local capacity.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who also appeared in the scene, even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-skit-tim-cook-acting-octavia-spencer-iphone-event-2023-9">won over some fans online</a> with his acting chops.But the show's real stars were the new versions of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-15-event-announcements-usb-c-titanium-pro-watches-2023-9">Apple's iPhone and Apple Watch</a>. Apple is sunsetting its ring/silent switch, a staple of the phone since its original iteration. What’s the most on-trend travel destination going to be in 2020? It’s Bhutan, according to Lonely Planet, which has put the tiny Asian nation at the top of its Best in Travel 2020 book, an annual publication of its top 10 countries, cities, regions and best-value destinations for the year ahead. The inclusion of <a href="https://www.scmp.com/topics/bhutan" class="link-text">Bhutan</a> is all about sustainability.Often described as the world’s last Shangri-La, the Himalayan kingdom is aiming to become the world’s first 100 per cent organic nation next year, banning the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in all farms. It is already the only carbon-negative country, removing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it contributes. “Bhutan really taps into one of the themes of this year’s Best in Travel, which is the growing awareness in sustainability and in looking after the things that make our world so beautiful,” says Tom Hall, vice-president of experience at Lonely Planet. “Bhutan is playing a leading role in that. There are many other reasons to visit Bhutan: incredible monasteries, fantastic festivals and classic Himalayan trekking. “It’s got a lot of things that travellers are interested in at the moment,” says Hall. It is not a cheap place to visit, though; the book points out its strict “high-value, low-impact” tourism policy that issues seven- or 14-day entry permits to foreigners, which are only valid for Thimphu, the capital, and the town of Paro. Most of the country is otherwise restricted. “[The country] has a per-day charge [for tourists], but it’s not bad value if you consider what experiences are on offer there,” says Hall. The daily fee – US$200 or US$250 for most travellers, depending on the time of year you visit – means, at least, it will not be getting much more crowded after its recognition by Lonely Planet. The Central Asia Silk Road – covering Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and <keyword id="169344" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tajikistan">Tajikistan</keyword> – takes top spot in the top 10 regions list ahead of Italy’s Le Marche, Tohoku in northeast Japan and China’s Guizhou Province. “Central Asia is one of those bucket-list destinations,” says Hall. “Places like Tashkent and Samarkand are remote, but colourful, vibrant and very Instagram-friendly – images are such an important way of how people are consuming travel and travel content, and awareness of this region has grown as a result.” Japan’s Tohoku region, still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and, much more recently, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/travel-leisure/article/3033850/Areas%20hit%20by%20Typhoon%20Hagibis%20brace%20for%20more%20floods%20as%20heavy%20rain%20falls%20in%20Japan" class="link-text">Typhoon Hagibis</a> , makes the list as “it’s a much less visited part of Japan, but it’s easily accessible and you can explore saké breweries, mountain temples and onsen,” says Halluizhou Province also drew praise from Lonely Planet as a must-visit region. “The centre of its capital, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/article/2148468/shenzhen-singapore-guiyang-who-else-can-hong-kong-fall" class="link-text">Guiyang</a>, has a lot of character, with artisan business, quiet alleyways, cafes and craft bars,” says Hall. “Out in the countryside there’s a feeling of ‘old China’, but it’s all connected by high speed rail so it’s easier to get to than ever.” Asian destinations featured in other categories, too. The intimate city of Kochi in Kerala, South India, placed seventh in the top 10 cities list, while the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh – home to the erotic sculptures at the Khajuraho group of Hindu and Jain temples, and stunning wildlife in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and Pench National Park – placed third in top 10 list for best value destinations. However, topping that list is <keyword id="8692" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>’s East Nusa Tenggara; specifically, the area east of the famous Komodo National Park that was recently threatened with closure to visitors. “If you move east of Bali and Lombok you leave the crowds behind,” says Hall, singling out diving on the Alor Archipelago and the many pristine beaches as highlights. “It’s a place for independent travel and it’s like Indonesia was 15 years ago, but it’s [also] changing very quickly.” Every year, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel lists start with nominations from its community of editors, researchers, locals and influencers, which are ranked by a panel of judges to create a list containing unique, compelling and topical reasons to visit various destinations in the year ahead. England came second on the top 10 countries list, with North Macedonia in third. “England represents better value now than it has for a while because of the drop in its currency,” says Hall. “It’s worth keeping an eye on. Anyone coming to England will find that it’s an extremely welcoming place for visitors – as it always has been.” However, the main reason for its inclusion is the opening in 2020 of the England Coast Path, which will be the longest managed and waymarked coastal path in the world. “It’s a long walk – about 3,000 miles [4,830km] – but it’s a really interesting way to explore England,” says Hall.
