<p>The act of people taking pictures of themselves has never been as ubiquitous as it is today-and consequently, everyone's trying to make money off of selfies. Sony is reportedly releasing a phone <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-phone-specially-built-for-super-selfies-2014-7">that's designed for selfies</a>. Under Armor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/under-armour-womens-clothing-line-2014-4">designed its latest clothing line </a>with gym selfies in mind. You can even buy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/selfie-mirror-2014-4">a mirror that will take your selfie for you</a> (though arguably by definition a selfie is a picture you take of yourself, not a photograph a mirror takes of you). </p>
<p>The next step in the commodification of the selfie: the selfie stick.  </p>

<p>Selfie sticks may have originated <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/charliewarzel/whether-you-like-it-or-not-everyone-is-going-to-be-wielding">within the extreme sports community</a>, according to BuzzFeed. But an Instagram search for "#selfiestick" doesn't turn up pictures of people enjoying the outdoors, clutching a metal stick with their GoPro attached to it. Instead, you'll see images of hordes of young people posing for  group photos. The primary appeal of the selfie stick seems to be its ability to fit more people into the frame.</p>
<p>Selfie sticks first gained traction in Southeast Asia, a region that contains four of the top 10 "<a href="http://time.com/selfies-cities-world-rankings/">selfiest" cities in the world</a>. The Huffington Post reported in March that young people in Indonesia have clamored for the extendable metal wands to help improve their selfie game. </p>

<p>A quick Amazon search for "selfie stick" returns <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=node%3D499314&amp;field-keywords=selfie+stick&amp;rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A502394%2Cn%3A499306%2Cn%3A499314%2Ck%3Aselfie+stick">over a hundred of results for monopods</a>-the tripod's one-legged brother-ranging in price from $7.99 to $79.99. <span>The metal sticks typically have a handle on one end and an adjustable clamp on the other end to hold your phone in place. Some selfie sticks some with remote controls, letting the user decide when to take the picture. Others don't, so users set timers on their phone's camera. Once you get the perfect shot,<span> the selfie stick collapses into its handle, becoming small and portable. </span></span></p>
<p><span><span>They fit most smartphones, and even GoPros. In fact, the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CKPCJNO/?tag=buzz0f-20">POV Pole 36" GoPro-Edition monopod</a> is the 49th most popular item in Amazon's camera store. An Amazon spokesperson said, "<a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/charliewarzel/whether-you-like-it-or-not-everyone-is-going-to-be-wielding">GoPro is one of the hottest selling items year-round in Amazon's camera store</a>. In addition, we've seen an uptick in sales of selfie sticks over the past few months as customers are spending more time traveling and doing other outdoor activities."</span></span></p>
<p>Director of Sales for Promaster, <span>Rich Bright, said his monopod company </span>branded its device as a "Selfie Stick" earlier this year, <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/charliewarzel/whether-you-like-it-or-not-everyone-is-going-to-be-wielding">according to BuzzFeed</a>. He said the company can't keep up with the demand and has had to make an emergency order for more selfie sticks.</p>

<p>There's no telling what any of this means for the future of auto-photography-how much further can people really take the trend? There's also the logistical issue of the devices themselves. What happens when we're all walking around holding 36-inch sticks, staring at own faces in our phones' reverse cameras?</p>

Apple banned selfie sticks at its next event

<p dir="ltr"><span>Even naysayers can't argue with the fact that there are tons of advantages in using one.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>With a selfie stick, your shot is more stable, you can include a wider background, you can fit your entire family or group in one shot, and you don't have to trust a random person on the street with your phone.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>The question isn't whether you need a selfie stick, it's which one you should buy.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><span id="docs-internal-guid-650bcc81-e8c5-c4e7-26e2-99c09d8c97cb">Noted selfie aficionado Joanna Stern at the <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-best-selfie-sticks-look-ridiculous-shoot-great-1421174145">Wall Street Journal</a> put 14 leading sticks to the test and came away with one winner, the Quik Pod. </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cms/homepages?action=edit&amp;vertical=law-contributor"><br /></a></p>
<p dir="ltr">"Of the many I tested in this range, my favorite was the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=digipower%20quik%20pod%20selfie&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=biselfiestick-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;linkId=NUHVAMTEM3XVGRPH">$60-to-$70 Digipower Quik Pod Selfie Extreme (aka "Quik Pod Ultra" or "Xpert")</a>, in part because of its raised rubberized grip," she <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-best-selfie-sticks-look-ridiculous-shoot-great-1421174145">writes</a>.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>Retracted, the stick measures 18 inches and it extends up to 53 inches.</span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>"There's a mirror, though, so you can frame selfies even with a GoPro , traditional point-and-shoot or the rear-facing better camera on your phone," says Stern.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>The stick is also saltwater-proof, so perfect for taking selfies on the beach.</span></p>

<p dir="ltr">If shelling out nearly a hundred bucks for a top-of-the line stick seems appalling, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=selfie%20stick&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;sprefix=selfie%20stick%2Cmobile%2C128&amp;tag=biselfiestick-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;linkId=RT6RA67FD5KO2LBZ">there are cheaper options available on Amazon</a>, but Stern recommends spending at least $15 on a stick. </p>

<p><span><span>However, she says, "Mark my words, I'll be taking the Quik Pod on my next vacation. And every time I use it, I'll be reminded of this epoch in human history where we, like our cave-dwelling ancestors, took up sticks to overcome our greatest obstacles."</span></span></p>

This Is The Best Selfie Stick You Can Buy

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Six Flags, the world's largest amusement-park corporation (based on number of properties), just banned selfie sticks from its parks and entertainment centers, roughly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/disney-is-banning-selfie-sticks-2015-6">one month after Disney</a> banned the sticks from its own parks, <a href="http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Selfie-Sticks-Banned-at-Six-Flags-Parks-Nationwide-318269791.html">NBC reports</a>.<p>Six Flags changed its policy on Monday and issued the following statement to annual-pass holders on Thursday:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Nothing is more important to us than your safety. After careful review we've decided to prohibit selfie sticks, monopods, and similar devices at all Six Flags theme and water parks effective immediately. Guests who bring selfie sticks to the park will be asked to store them in their cars during their visit. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, and thank you for helping us keep Six Flags among the safest theme parks in the world!</p><p>The policy changes have nothing to do with restricting people's picture-taking at these parks; it does, in fact, have everything to do with safety.</p><p>In late June, an employee at Disneyland in California <a href="https://np.reddit.com/r/offbeat/comments/3bjjiy/disney_confirms_selfie_stick_ban_at_theme_parks/csmvru7">wrote a lengthy response on Reddit</a> explaining Disney's new policy on selfie sticks.</p><p>According to that person, all attractions made since 1965 are designed with what's called the "Envelope of Protection," a giant contraption that is placed on rides to simulate what would happen if a rider extended his or her arms or legs from the vehicle. The video below shows the Envelope of Protection on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride at Walt Disney World.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">The Envelope of Protection ensures people's limbs couldn't possibly get hit while riding a roller coaster. The problem with selfie sticks is that they extend an extra 3 feet or so, which can be very dangerous for both you and the attractions.</p><p class="embed-spacer">If a selfie stick hits part of the attraction - especially if you're going at a high speed, perhaps 45 mph - it can seriously damage the attraction, it can damage your phone or camera, and the selfie stick could fly out of your hands and hit someone else on the ride, or worse, derail the vehicle behind you.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Here's more from that Disney employee speaking on Reddit:</p><p class="embed-spacer" style="padding-left: 30px;">We originally tried banning [selfie sticks] on rides where they could affect some show element or impact part of the ride - any ride with animatronics that could be poked, and any ride moving relatively fast through areas your selfie stick could hit. People still kept bringing them on the rides and kept dangling them out of the ride vehicles - and again, if your selfie stick hit something, it could endanger the safety of yourself and those around you. If we saw it come out, we had to stop the ride and ask you to put it away. Some rides can't restart very easily and can take a couple hours before they reopen - which, of course, is an inconvenience to other guests.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Originally, Disney tried restricting selfie sticks from rides only. But according to the Disneyland employee, the change in policy occurred because "guests weren't listening to us Attractions cast members."</p><p class="embed-spacer">"If people had listened to us and not taken out their selfie sticks on rides, they would still be allowed in the park," the person added, "but other people don't listen (or don't care) and think that their awesome selfie is worth potentially endangering others."</p><p class="embed-spacer">Despite the restriction on selfie sticks, Disney theme parks, as well as Six Flags, still allow you to wear GoPros and body-mounted cameras, because those are considered to be more like clothing.
