<ul class="summary-list"><li>Irish drone-delivery startup <keyword id="53658" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Manna">Manna</keyword> was ready to start deliveries of Ben and Jerry's ice cream to university campuses just as the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> lockdown started to kick in.</li><li>The company quickly restructured to start making essential deliveries of prescription medication and food to isolated residents in the village of <keyword id="5643825" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moneygall">Moneygall</keyword>, Barack Obama's ancestral home.</li><li>The company also started doing less vital deliveries, including sending a regular Thursday-night pizza to an 85-year-old priest.</li><li>Business Insider spoke with CEO Bobby Healy about how Manna managed to adapt so quickly to the onset of the pandemic.</li></ul><p>Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, Irish drone-delivery startup Manna was set to make its mark in a big way — by delivering Ben and Jerry's ice cream to students in Dublin.</p><p>The startup had been going since late 2018, and had struck a deal with Just Eat and Unilever to deliver Ben and Jerry's to the 30,000 students of University College Dublin starting on March 18.</p><p>But as the date drew closer and the reality of the coronavirus pandemic started to sink in, it became clear that lockdown was on the way, and Manna CEO Bobby Healy decided to change tack. Ice cream is all well and good, but with people in rural communities having to isolate themselves, Healy felt Manna's <keyword id="94769" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="drones">drones</keyword> could be put to a more civic use: delivering prescription medication and groceries.</p><p>Ahead of lockdown, Manna began discussions with <keyword id="6358817" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="ireland">Ireland</keyword>'s health service the Health Service Executive (HSE).</p><p>"We said, 'Look, as a contingency plan, if lockdown happens, we'd like to be able to deliver pharmaceutical products, some prescribed meds, and critical food supplies,'" Healy told Business Insider.</p><p>The HSE designated Manna an essential service, and, according to Healy, it took the company about a week to flip the switch and get ready.</p><h2>Delivering meds, cakes, and pizzas</h2><p>For the first trial of their service, Manna picked the village of Moneygall, which has a population of around 1,000 people and a nicely central convenience store.</p><p>"The pivot wasn't so much a pivot for us — it was really just an acceleration of our original plan.</p><p>"We'd always planned to do not just food but pharmacy, convenience store, and really everything that the local community wanted," Healy said.</p><p>The trial has now been running for six weeks, with just one of Manna's drones making between 20 and 50 deliveries a day, with a maximum carry weight of 2 to 4 kilograms (or about 4.5 to 9 pounds).</p><p>Once it got going, Manna broadened the deliveries beyond essentials like medication, bread, and butter. Residents in Moneygall phoned in to request Fanta, puncture-repair kits, and, in one instance, a cake for a 7-year-old's birthday party.</p><p>Healy said the oldest resident to use the service is the parish priest, who is 85, when the priest ordered a pizza. When Healy met with the owner of the local convenience store about launching Manna, he said the priest's regular Thursday-night pizza order is the only delivery the town really makes.</p><p>"It was always my plan to replace that one delivery," Healy said.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barack-obama-plaza-ireland-themed-service-station-bizarre-2019-12?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Insider's Sinead Baker has visited the convenience store that Manna distributes from;</a> it is attached to a gas station dedicated to Barack Obama, whose great-great-great-grandfather was born in Moneygall. On road signs it touts itself as "President Obama's Ancestral Village."</p><p><div type="image" title="Barack michelle obama moneygall" height="2000" width="3000" msid="76118494" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>More deliveries to come</h2><p>Manna has taken a week's break following the trial and is getting back to work on Monday. It's also planning to expand a second slightly larger town, although the company hadn't settled on which one when Business Insider spoke with Healy on Wednesday.</p><p>"We're looking for a town of between 3,000 and 5,000 people max," Healy said.</p><p>Manna's ambition is not to break into big cities with dense populations, like London, where limited amounts of outdoor garden space make drone deliveries difficult. Equally, he thinks serving more spread out rural communities means evading competition from food-delivery giants like Uber Eats and Deliveroo.</p><p>"If you look at their business models, they only work in a highly densely populated area," said Healy, saying in the future he could even see Manna partnering with food-delivery startups.</p><p><div type="image" title="Wing drone" height="2155" width="2873" msid="76118497" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In terms of competition, Healy sees Alphabet's drone company, <keyword id="55517" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="wing">Wing</keyword>, as Manna's biggest likely competitor.</p><p>"They're the ones that I would say, look, if anyone's going to really go for this, it's going to be Alphabet, and they're ready to scale."</p><p>Healy thinks Manna can still sidestep being in direct competition with Wing.</p><p>"They're essentially going to compete with everybody in the platform space. So they're going to compete with Uber, Deliveroo, everyone," he added. "I just think in terms of strategic fit, we make more sense to the industry than a single provider monopoly set of drones."</p><p>Manna is looking to kick off a third round of funding in the coming months, something Healy said the company had planned to do in Q3 or Q4 pre-pandemic.</p><p>"We pushed that slightly forward and with a much more aggressive growth plan for the next 18 months," he said, adding: "We'll be raising $15 million to $20 million." To date, <a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/business/technology/drone-delivery-company-manna-raises-3m-in-seed-round-1.4119280">Manna has raised $5.2 million</a>.</p><p>Healy hopes that in the near future investors and consumers will see drones as a real growth sector rather than a gimmick.</p><p>"Still so many people don't appreciate that because it's one of those clickbait stories," he says. "They just can't get to the reality of it. But it's real and it's going to scale. Every market is going to have this within the next 24 months."</p>

Like every other Irish people I've spoken to about it, I have something of a love-hate relationship with the site: It's actually a very nice rest stop on a boring highway that has a widely stocked store, nice places to eat, friendly staff, and comfortable seats.</p><p>But there's also something deeply embarrassing about it, and I really hope that tourists, particularly American tourists, don't take it too seriously - and don't think that we do either.</p><p>The branding, artwork, and statues - as well as the museum that has things like Obama badges, a Guinness glass Obama may or may not have drunk out of, and histories of other American presidents that had Irish heritage - all make for a truly confusing rest stop experience.</p><p>This is what it's like to visit:</p>

The strike lasted nearly six months, yet the economy escaped unscathed.</span></p><p><span>People used cheques to manage large payments and, while the banks were closed, risk of default on the cheques was shouldered by neighbourhood pubs. </span></p><p><span>Here's the Bank of England's Ben Norman and Peter Zimmerman:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>How did payees manage this risk for such a prolonged period?  <strong>Notoriously, local publicans were well-placed to judge the creditworthiness of payers.</strong>  (They had an informed view of whether the liquid resources of would-be payers were stout or ailing!)  </span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>For example, John Dempsey, a publican in Balbriggan, near Dublin, was "…</span><em>holding cheques for thousands of pounds, but I'm not worried.  The last bank strike went on for 12 weeks and I didn't have a single 'bouncer'. … <strong>I deal only with my regulars … I refuse strangers.  I suppose I've been able to keep a few local factories going</strong></em><strong>."</strong></p><p>Around £3 billion ($4.5 billion) changed hands this way while the banks were shut, according to the BoE figures, and not all of it went through the pubs. Some went through local retailers and other businesses.</p><p>But, despite the inconvenience, the whole affair didn't hurt the economy that much. "This makes it even more likely that the Fed will decide to taper its monthly asset purchases further at this week's policy meeting."</li>
<li>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/march-nahb-homebuilder-confidence-2014-3">NAHB homebuilder sentiment index</a> climbed to just 47 in March from 46 in February. This was weaker than the 50 level expected by economists. "[B]uilders continued to be affected by poor weather and difficulties in finding lots and labor," said NAHB Chairman Kevin Kelly.</li>
<li>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-fed-manufacturing-2014-3">New York Fed's Empire State manufacturing index</a> also missed expectations, climbing to just 5.61 in March from 4.48 in February. Economists were expecting a 7.00 reading. "[T]he Empire State result clearly raises the risk of yet another weak headline figure in the Philadelphia Business Outlook Survey," warned Societe Generale's Brian Jones.</li>

STOCKS RALLY: Here's What You Need To Know

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Each year on March 17, the Irish and Irish-at-heart come out in droves to pubs and parade routes to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland.</span></p><p>In the US, St. Patrick's Day serves as a valid excuse to wear green and drink. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But there's enough rich Irish culture to last the whole year round.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We scoured Celtic folklore, online forums, the Bible, and even our favorite Irish pub in New York City to find some beautiful and just plain weird sayings used on the Emerald Isle.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Some of the sayings are historic, out-of-use proverbs with original Irish Gaelic translations (today, as little as <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/european_languages/countries/ireland.shtml" target="_blank">30% of the population</a> in the Republic of Ireland speak Irish). </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Others are examples of modern slang said in English, the shared official language.</span></p><h2>Here are 15 Irish expressions to break out on St. Paddy's Day:</h2><h3>1. May the road rise up to meet you.</h3><p>You may recognize this popular blessing (in Irish Gaelic: <span><em>Go n-éirí an bóthar leat</em>)</span> from Catholic weddings or cross-stitched pillows in Nan's house. <a href="http://www.lords-prayer-words.com/famous_prayers/may_the_road_rise_up_to_meet_you.html#celtic" target="_blank">One of the main characteristics of Celtic Christianity</a> is the use of images of nature to show how God interacts with people. "May the road rise up to meet you/ May the wind be always at your back/ May the sun shine warm upon you face ..." uses everyday images to mean, may God remove obstacles in your journey through life.</p><h3>2. Sláinte!</h3><p>In an Irish pub, patrons toast each other <em>sláinte </em>(pronounced "slaan-sha") as they clink glasses of Guinness. Derived from the Old Irish adjective <em>slán </em>(which means "<a href="http://goireland.about.com/od/preparingyourtrip/tp/top10irishwords.htm" target="_blank">safe</a>"), <em>sláinte </em>literally translates as "health" and is used as a stand-in for the more time-consuming "I drink to your health!"</p><h3>3. What's the craic?</h3><p>Greetings like "Any craic?" and "How's the craic?" give rise to potential awkward misunderstandings for tourists, because craic is pronounced like "crack." The most straightforward definition is fun or enjoyment, and it can substitute for "How are you?" A typical response is "divil a bit," which means "not much."</p><h3>4. May the cat eat you, and may the devil eat the cat.</h3><p>Consider this insult a double whammy. By saying, "<em>Go n-ithe an cat thú is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat</em>," the speaker wishes that a cat gobble up his enemy like a can of Fancy Feast, and that the Devil eat them both. It's a surefire sentence to Hell.</p><p>Curses are far more detailed and nuanced in Irish culture, as compared to the traditional F-bombs dropped in the U.S. Here's another popular mouthful of an insult: "May you be afflicted with itching without the benefit of scratching." Two people shorten the road.</h3><p><span>Company makes the journey fly, as evidenced by one anecdote from <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=BBDTOWaksHEC&amp;pg=PT251&amp;lpg=PT251&amp;dq=Son+of+The+Gobhaun+Saor&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=YzvClnyI3_&amp;sig=5d6yaV-B2PMHhgQ8q7j4e7OkTgw&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=XHQgU5O4E6_8yAHJw4D4BQ&amp;ved=0CDUQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&amp;q=Gobhaun%20Saor%20shorten%20the%20road&amp;f=false" target="_blank">Celtic folklore</a>. In it, a father asks his son to "shorten their journey" to see the king, and refuses to continue on foot when the son doesn't know how. Frustrated, the son asks his wife what to do. "Every one knows that storytelling is the way to shorten a road," she says. They set out the next morning, and the son weaves a tale the whole way to White Strand. Lesson learned: <em>Giorraíonn beirt bóthar.</em></span></p><h3>6. Story horse?</h3><p>Move aside, Wishbone. "What's the story, horse?" - abbreviated as "story horse?" - is how you ask a buddy what's up. It's a less breezy greeting than its American counterpart, and invites the other person to really dive into what's been going on in life.</p><h3>7. On me tod.</h3><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A lonely lad says, "I'm on me tod," if he's riding solo at the bars that night, or alone in general. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/books/00/10/22/reviews/001022.22brucknt.html" target="_blank">Tod Sloan</a><span> was an American jockey whose mother died when he was young, whose father abandoned him, and whose incredibly successful horse-racing career came to an end when he moved to the U.K. and was ridiculed for his Western riding style. Sloan was always said to be "on his own."</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This expression is one of the best-known examples of <a href="http://www.englishtown.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-cockney-rhyming-slang/" target="_blank">Cockney rhyming slang</a>, a phrase construction that involves taking a common word and using a rhyming phrase of two or three words to replace it. <span>"On my Tod Sloan" rhymes with "on my own"; but in typical Cockney fashion, the word that completes the rhyme</span><span> (</span><span>"</span><span>Sloan") </span><span>is omitted.</span></span></p><h3>8. Acting the maggot.</h3><p>Friend's messing around, being obnoxious? Acting the maggot. Phone taking forever to deliver an iMessage? Acting the maggot.
