Across the road, there is a lovely shrubbery, but pay it no mind as you must focus on the road. We don't want any accidental fender benders," Berry as Moira continued.</p><p>Later, Berry as Moira started serenading the driver with "Oh Danny Boy," a song Moira sings in the series to prevent her husband, Johnny Rose, from embarrassing himself at a funeral. </p><p>At one point, Moira chastised the driver for making a wrong turn, spewing unusual combinations of words as she rushes to figure out a new route.</p><p>"No, no, I said 'right,' not 'straight,'" Berry as Moira told the driver. "Why must you be such a churlish ninnyhanner? Now we must reroute. Do you feel my directions are but trifle humbuggery? I'm not doing this for my heath, you know. Ugh, the cheek!"</p><p>Berry told Insider he sat down with his thesaurus before filming the video to pick out word combinations Moira might use, like "churlish ninnyhammer" and "trifle humbuggery."</p><p>Schitt's Creek co-creator Dan Levy, who also stars in the series, admitted in an <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/04/schitts-creek-catherine-ohara-moira-rose.html">interview with Vulture</a> last year that he didn't know what Moira's accent would be until the first day of filming.</p><p>"I remember being so thrown off by it, because it's this vaguely European accent that has no origin and yet is from everywhere," he said. I placed the wig on the Styrofoam mannequin head sitting on the counter. I stared at it for several minutes, contemplating how to fix this dilemma. For more than a year, I had been dealing with my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-women-with-alopecia-share-how-theyve-faced-bullying-discrimination-2022-3">progressive hair loss</a> and clamoring for some sort of control.</p><p>Then it struck me: bangs! Bangs are always a decision made in hours of despair. I started to cut them straight across, just like when I was 6 years old and ruined my favorite Barbie doll playing hair salon. Except this was a $650 wig. I stopped when I realized I was one more cut from making this wig unredeemable. Buy a house or maintain a youthful image? I decided to open the door wigless upon him coming over for the first time. I can't say why I chose that method, except that it felt less vulnerable than taking the wig off in front of him. I honestly thought it could be funny and had a couple of jokes planned. But he just kissed me hello and asked for a tour. It took him fifteen minutes to say, "Did you cut your hair?" He had only seen me with a thick, black wig that fell to my mid-back, and my natural hair was a short bob, extremely thin with bald spots, and light brown.</span></p><p><span>I realized right then I was worrying more than necessary. The experience helped me comfortably switch up wigs when I saw him or sometimes not wear one at all. When we stopped seeing each other a few months later, I decided to start telling men on the first date. Not one of them was weirded out.</span></p><p><span>I started PRP treatment in the fall of 2023. I had met a woman at an event who had great success with it. I wanted to say I had tried everything. After eight months of injections, I started to see some regrowth. I started testing out leaving the house with my natural hair. It took courage at first, as my new growth was short, spiky, and curly. And it took some time, but I did eventually go on a first date without a wig. It was liberating.</span></p><p><span>I found what works for me as I adjust to my new normal. My hair will never be what it was, and there are ups and downs. She chose to reveal her identity on Wednesday after claiming that Harper's magazine threatened to expose her. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/10/business/media/a-feminist-twitter-campaign-targets-harpers-magazine-and-katie-roiphe.html?_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harper's has denied this.</a></p><p>The Google document - originally created as a private document - was <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/doree/what-to-do-with-shitty-media-men">first exposed in BuzzFeed in mid-October</a> and has gone viral since.</p><p>Donegan said she lost friends - "some who thought I had been overzealous, others who thought I had not been zealous enough" - as well as her job, although it's unclear whether it was connected to the spreadsheet.</p><p>She wrote: "The fear of being exposed, and of the harassment that will inevitably follow, has dominated my life since. <p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p><p class="caption">Annie Murphy and Dan Levy star in "Schitt's Creek."</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>With "Schitt's Creek" airing its final episodes, Business Insider sat down with showrunner, writer, and star Dan Levy to learn more about the writing process that turned an out-of-touch family into one of the most heartwarming on TV.</li><li>Levy - a first-time showrunner who was also the head writer during early seasons, and stars as David Rose - hired writers from different backgrounds, including playwrights, essayists, and sketch-comedy writers.</li><li>He started each season with a goal for where the characters should end up and found the best stories came from the writers' own personal experiences. </li><li>The writers' room was "almost like an open therapy session," Levy said, adding that the freedom the writers enjoyed came from the network, CBC, which gave very few notes.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul><p><strong><em>Warning: This post contains spoilers for seasons 5 and minor spoilers for season 6 of "Schitt's Creek."</em></strong></p><p>When "Schitt's Creek" cocreator Dan Levy was putting together the writers' room for the show, now in its sixth and final season, he wasn't just looking for sitcom writers.</p><p>Levy hired playwrights like David Read West, seasoned TV writers like Michael Short from the sketch-comedy show "Second City Television," and personal essayists with plenty of writing experience but little prior work in television.</p><p>Levy - a first-time showrunner who was also the head writer during early seasons, and stars as David Rose -  wanted writers who could draw on their own life experiences to develop a comedy that was grounded in reality,  despite centering on an absurdly wealthy family, the Roses, who suddenly lose their money and are forced to rebuild their lives in a small Canadian town, called Schitt's Creek, that they bought years earlier as a joke.</p><p>Levy's unconventional approach to building the writers' room helped turn "Schitt's Creek" into the cult TV hit it's become. The audience for the series, which airs on CBC in Canada and Pop in the US, has<a href="https://www.vulture.com/2019/01/schitts-creek-netflix-pop-success-story.html"> steadily climbed since its 2015 debut</a>, exploding after a 2017 deal put past seasons of the show on Netflix.</p><p>"Ew, David," a phrase made famous by Levy's on-screen sister, Alexis Rose (played by Annie Murphy), is now a meme and a popular t-shirt saying. You can buy Rose Apothecary's best-selling lip balm at a New York shop that launched a collection inspired by the general store from the series. And a North American tour offering an inside look at the show <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/loisaltermark/2019/10/23/ew-david-schitts-creek-up-close-and-personal-sells-out-at-the-cosmopolitan-of-las-vegas/#74f7fcc030ac">sold out</a> this fall, as did <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/immersive-nyc-pop-up-welcomes-fans-to-town-of-schitts-creek/2242849/">pop-up experiences</a> promoting the sixth season.</p><p>With "Schitt's Creek" airing its final episodes, Business Insider sat down with Levy in New York to learn more about the writing process that turned an out-of-touch family into one of the most heartwarming on TV.</p><p class="source"><span>CBC</span></p><p class="caption">Dan Levy.</p><h2>The writers' room was like an 'open therapy session'</h2><p>Being a novice head writer may have helped Levy, who found the best stories came from the writers' real-life experiences.</p><p>Levy would start each season with a general idea of where he wanted the characters to end up during it and let the writers work their ways to those moments.</p><p>"You have to create a space that feels safe enough for people to share their ideas," Levy said, wearing black horn-rimmed glasses, a teal sweater, and navy slacks that distinguished him from his monochrome-clad character, but for the same immaculately cropped locks. "I would approach every day with a goal while at the same time knowing that we can afford to go on tangents and we can afford to have conversations."</p><p>Levy wanted the show to feel grounded, as though each character had earned their progression during the course of the series. That's where having writers with a range of experiences came in. The writers used their own relationships as inspiration.</p><p>"It becomes a place that's almost like an open therapy session," Levy said. "When you're talking about relationships or a certain type of relationship, or a certain hiccup or hold up in a relationship, someone inevitably has a story that will relate to that. You share that story and then inevitably someone else has another story and suddenly you've spent half an hour talking about your past relationships with a room full of people that you've only known for a little while."</p><p>In season five, Levy knew his character, David, and his pragmatic, level-headed partner, Patrick, should get engaged. But Patrick felt almost too perfect up until that point.</p><p>"I wanted to show a crack in that," Levy said. "I wanted to show some vulnerability and I wanted to show some, some struggle."</p><p>That led to Patrick's coming-out episode, where David invites Patrick's parents to a surprise party for his birthday and learns that the family didn't know Patrick was gay. David is hurt that Patrick hadn't told his parents about their relationship, but also understands what a difficult moment it is. With David's support, Patrick comes out to his parents by the end of the episode.</p><p>"I felt like, okay, they've been through this together, I feel like we have earned the proposal now," Levy said, adding that the episode was one of the most meaningful he's written. "It's interesting when give yourself that kind of goal, what comes out of it."</p><h2>The writers had near autonomy in creating the show </h2><p>Levy said he and the writers had near autonomy when writing the show. The network, CBC, rarely gave notes or interjected in storylines.</p><p>"We didn't really have to answer to a lot of people," he said.</p><p>He credits that, in part, to his father and "Schitt's Creek" cocreator Eugene Levy. The Levys sold CBC on "Schitt's Creek" with a <a href="https://playbackonline.ca/2017/02/08/new-showrunners-talk-tv-daniel-levy/">12-minute presentation pilot</a> that starred Eugene Levy and frequent collaborator Catherine O'Hara. Dan Levy said the network was excited by the pairing and didn't interfere much.</p><p>"That's really rare and something that I knew was rare way back when," Levy said. "When you're afforded that level of freedom, for us it was about, okay, well, we can't f--- this up. We have to do the best job we possibly can, while at the same time taking advantage of that freedom and being able to tell stories that represent all different types of people."</p><p>The early seasons of "Schitt's Creek" laid the groundwork for the bigger stories, like David and Patrick's engagement.</p><p>The series pilot thrusts the Rose family into an entirely new world where they have to do learn basic things, like cooking and cleaning up after themselves, as well as form relationships with people that weren't centered on money and how to cope with being on the opposite end of an economic equation.</p><p>In one episode, Eugene Levy's character, Johnny Rose, who had owned his own business before losing his wealth, has to come to terms with applying for unemployment, and humble himself further by asking for a ride to the unemployment office.</p><p>By season six, Johnny, David, and Alexis, are all running their own businesses and in happy, healthy relationships in Schitt's Creek, while matriarch Moira Rose, (Catherine O'Hara's character) is rekindling her acting career.</p><p>"The intention of the show from the very beginning was always that love is so much more than anything you can buy," Levy said, adding that every moment since was about helping the characters discover that. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Each day in October, Lauren Mancke crafts elaborate <keyword id="571210" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Costumes">costumes</keyword> for her three children and shares photos with her 20,000 Instagram followers. </li><li>Her most popular post so far this year is her kids dressed as the Rose family from "Schitt's Creek."</li><li>She's also created costumes of characters from "Space Jam," "The Mandalorian," "Inside Out," and "Willy Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory."</li></ul><p>As if taking care of three toddlers and working full-time during a pandemic wasn't time-consuming enough, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/laurenmancke/?hl=en">Lauren Mancke</a> has been hard at work producing some of October's most <keyword id="54320" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Viral">viral</keyword> photos. </p><p>The 35-year-old mom of three from Columbia, South Carolina, is making a new set of elaborate <keyword id="600" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Halloween">Halloween</keyword> costumes for her kids every day this month and sharing pictures to her more than 20,000 Instagram followers with the hashtag #manckemonthofcostumes. </p><p>The most popular picture she's posted so far this year is her three kids — 6-year-old Fox (pictured twice) and her 3-year-old twins Marigold and Lera — dressed as the Rose family from "Schitt's Creek." The post has earned over 28,000 likes and resulted in Mancke's largest boost in social media followers since she started the annual tradition in 2015. </p><p>"It's one of my favorite shows and so I wanted to lead with that one," Mancke told Insider. "You know, they got all the Emmy wins [and I wanted to] congratulate them. I really wasn't expecting everyone to love it so much, but I think they love the show so much, and I feel like kids really unknowingly nailed the poses of the characters." </p><h2>Mancke, who has always loved Halloween, started making costumes for her kids in 2015</h2><p>Mancke said that she's always made costumes for herself and friends; she saw motherhood as an opportunity to continue her crafty hobby. In 2015, when Fox was 14 months old, she started dressing him in simple homemade costumes like a striped shirt and overalls for "Dennis the Menace" and the hobby quickly snowballed.</p><p>She took a year off in 2016 while pregnant with her twins but, in 2017, "once the twins were born everyone was like 'Are you gonna do the costumes? You gotta do the costumes, what's better than one baby? Two babies!' So we did it again that year and People magazine picked it up."</p><h2>Mancke's kids help her with ideas for costumes based on movies and shows they're watching</h2><p>Mancke said she's come up with the costumes for older movies and shows, like "Wayne's World" and "Friends," but her children share ideas too.</p><p>On average, the costumes take half a day to put together, but some of the more detail-oriented costumes can take much longer — this year's "The Mandalorian" costume took a week. Mancke said she normally works on a costume in the morning, shoots the photos in the afternoon, and posts them to Instagram the following morning.</p><p>The process also depends on how quickly she can get her kids dressed and camera ready. <strong> </strong></p><p>"It's three toddlers so you can imagine how a photo shoot goes," Mancke told Insider. "But they're used to taking a picture, so they all relatively get in line and say cheese and do a little pose and they all hold them."</p><p>After doing so many shoots, Mancke's kids have developed their own styles and poses, which she says helps bring the characters to life. </p><h2>Mancke says the whole point of the series is to have fun with her children, but she also hopes the photos bring strangers joy, too</h2><p>This year it carried an extra meaning — Mancke lost two grandmothers, one to the coronavirus and the second to other causes. With the coronavirus negatively impacting so many people and derailing much of 2020 (including Halloween in some areas), she hoped this year's costumes would give her followers something positive to focus on.</p><p>"This year kind of sucked. We're hoping to bring some joy to people, make people smile," she told Insider. </p><p>Even though traditional trick-or-treating is <a href="https://www.thestate.com/news/local/article246308465.html">up in the air</a> near where Mancke lives, it's no doubt that her kids have their choice of some of the best Halloween costumes in town.
