Official sources said, The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, bestowed on Prime Minister Modi on behalf of the President, is a rarely-awarded, prestigious decoration that can only be bestowed by Trump, typically to heads of state or heads of government of other countries. India's Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, accepted the award on behalf of the Prime Minister from <keyword id="10474147" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-us-national-security-advisor">the US National Security Advisor</keyword> Robert O'Brien at the White House. The citation with the award states: "For exceptionally meritorious service as the Prime Minister of <keyword id="9933518" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-republic-of-india">the Republic of India</keyword> from May 2014 to August 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's steadfast leadership and vision have accelerated India's emergence as a global power and elevated the strategic partnership between the US and India to address global challenges. Prime Minister Modi's personal engagement expanded US-India ties across all facets of the relationship, helping to establish a strong foundation for an enduring partnership that is based on shared commitment to freedom, democratic principles, the equal treatment of all citizens, and the rule of law. "India is a key partner for the US in the Indo-Pacific, where the two countries are increasing collaboration to ensure freedom of the seas, open and transparent investment and infrastructure development, secure and reliable digital networks, and good governance." In a glowing tribute, the citation adds: "Prime Minister Modi's personal initiative strengthened the defence partnership between the United States and India, enhancing the US' ability to secure joint military cooperation that addressed shared challenges. His efforts to expand India's economic cooperation with the US has advanced prosperity, investment and job creation in both countries. "Prime Minister Modi's superior effort, personal leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing strategic cooperation between the United States and India and promoting global peace and prosperity reflect great credit upon himself, the Indian armed forces, and his country." The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander is a domed five-pointed American white star plaque of heraldic form bordered in purplish-red enamel 215/16 inches circumscribing diameter with 13 white stars on a blue field emerging from a circle of clouds; backing the star, a laurel wreath with pierced, crossed arrows pointing outward between each arm of the star and the wreath. The reverse is engraved with the words '<keyword id="15552" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states-of-America">United States of America</keyword>'. In September this year, after a very long gap, President Donald Trump awarded the Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, to Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait. Reiterating his offer to mediate on the border dispute between India and China, US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> has said that he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is not in a "good mood" over the "big conflict" between the two countries. Interacting with journalists in the Oval Office of the <keyword id="6356037" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-house">White House</keyword> on Thursday, Trump said a "big conflict" was going on between India and China. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76037792" title="Donald Trump offers to mediate the ‘raging’ border dispute between India and China" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> "They like me in India. I think they like me in India more than the media likes me in this country. And, I like Modi. I like your prime minister a lot. He is a great gentleman," he said. "They have a big conflict ...India and China. Two countries with 1.4 billion people (each). Two countries with very powerful militaries. India is not happy and probably China is not happy," the president said when asked if he was worried about the border situation between India and China. "I can tell you; I did speak to Prime Minister Modi. He is not in a good mood about what is going on with China," Trump said. A day earlier, the president offered to mediate between India and China. Trump on Wednesday said in a tweet that he was "ready, willing and able to mediate" between the two countries. Responding to a question on his tweet, Trump reiterated his offer, saying if called for help, "I would do that (mediate). If they thought it would help" about "mediate or arbitrate, I would do that," he said. India on Wednesday said it was engaged with China to peacefully resolve the border row, in a carefully crafted reaction to Trump's offer to arbitrate between the two Asian giants to settle their decades-old dispute. "We are engaged with the Chinese side to peacefully resolve it," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson <keyword id="916281" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anurag-Srivastava">Anurag Srivastava</keyword> said, replying to a volley of questions at an online media briefing. "The two sides have established mechanisms both at military and diplomatic levels to resolve situations which may arise in border areas peacefully through dialogue and continue to remain engaged through these channels," he said. While the Chinese Foreign Ministry is yet to react to Trump's tweet which appears to have caught Beijing by surprise, an op-ed in the state-run Global Times said both countries did not need such help from the US president. "The latest dispute can be solved bilaterally by China and India. The two countries should keep alert on the US, which exploits every chance to create waves that jeopardise regional peace and order," it said. Trump's unexpected offer came on a day when China took an apparently conciliatory tone by saying that the situation at the border with India is "overall stable and controllable." In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday that both China and India have proper mechanisms and communication channels to resolve the issues through dialogue and consultations. Trump previously offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, a proposal that was rejected by New Delhi. The situation in eastern Ladakh deteriorated after around 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers were engaged in a violent face-off on the evening of May 5 which spilled over to the next day before the two sides agreed to "disengage" following a meeting at the level of local commanders. Over 100 Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured in the violence. The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in North Sikkim on May 9. On May 5, the Indian and the Chinese army personnel clashed with iron rods, sticks, and even resorted to stone-pelting in the Pangong Tso lake area in which soldiers on both sides sustained injuries. In a separate incident, nearly 150 Indian and Chinese military personnel were engaged in a face-off near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector on May 9. At least 10 soldiers from both sides sustained injuries. The troops of India and China were engaged in a 73-day stand-off in Doklam tri-junction in 2017 which even triggered fears of a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet while India contests it. Both sides have been asserting that pending the final resolution of the boundary issue, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. Trump feels that Modi is not in a 'good mood' over 'big conflict' with China

India and China are set to engage in negotiations on June 6 between senior military officers. Yesterday, it was clear once again, the relationship between India and US is not just one between two governments but one that is people driven and they are people-centric. This is one of the most significant partnerships of the 21st century. Therefore, today, President and I have decided to raise this relationship to the level of 'comprehensive global strategic partnership'. In our talks today, we have had a constructive exchange on all aspects of this partnership from defence and security, energy strategic partnership, technology cooperation, global connectivity, trade relations, and people-to-people ties. Our defence manufacturers are part of each other's supply chain. In the last few years, there was an unprecedented increase in interoperability between the two militaries. We have decided to further strengthen the cooperation on Homeland security and to take steps against those who support terrorism. President Trump has given priority to the war against opioids today we have a greed honour new mechanism to deal with drug trafficking narcotics and organised crime. We have further solidified the recently established energy strategic partnership today. US has become a big source of energy for India in the recent years. In the last four years, the total bilateral trade on energy has been $20 billion, from renewables to nuclear, the cooperation is getting more energy. In the same way, India and US partnership are setting new benchmarks in cooperation in Industry 4.0 and other new emerging technologies of the 21st century. Indians talent has has enriched American companies with their leadership, democratic values, and culture. India and US want open and fair and balanced rate are committed the last 3 years the bilateral trade has grown in double digits and it's become more balanced. Just four sectors⁠— energy, civil aviation, defence, and higher education⁠— have contributed send $70 billion to the bilateral trade between the two countries in the last 4-5 years. This has been possible because of some the policy decisions taken by President Trump. I am fully confident that in the days to come this number will rise significantly in the days to come. As far as the bilateral trade is concerned, there have been constructive discussions between the two Commerce Ministries. President Trump and I have agreed to our respective teams will give legal shape to the understanding between the two Commerce ministers and to start negotiations on a trade deal. The partnership between the two countries is based on shared democratic values and goals. Especially, in the area of Indo-Pacific and global commerce, this cooperation will be important to bring a rule-based order. We agreed to push for sustainable and transparent financing in global connectivity. The synergies (between India and US) are not just beneficial to the two countries but to the world at large. I have sought President Trump that the two sides must take forward the 'totalisation' process of 'social security' contributions by the Indian diaspora in US. Donald Trump, US President: I know Prime Minister Modi will agree that this has been productive discussion. The two countries have expanded defence cooperation with agreements for India to purchase $3 billion American military equipment including Apache and MH 60 Romeo helicopters India will purchase over $3 billion defence equipment including Apache and Romeo 360 helicopters. Prime Minister and I agreed to protect our citizens from radical Islamic terrorism. United States is also working productively with Pakistan to confront terrorists who operate on its soil. The Prime Minister and I are revitalising the QUAD initiative between India, US, Australia, and Japan. It seems more than a meeting of ministers with all the expanded cooperation on counter-terrorism, cyber security, and maritime security towards creating a free and open Indo-Pacific. The two countries are united by shared traditions of democracy and constitution protect freedom rights and the rule of law. During our visit, we discussed the importance of a secure 5G wireless network and the need for this emerging technology to be a a tool for freedom, progress, and prosperity and not to do anything with where it could be even conceived as a conduit of suppression and censorship; to guarantee that the infrastructure of the future is built in a safe, transparent, and accountable way. United States is working with a range of partners including Australia and Japan to create the Blue Dart network initiative to ensure countries around the world have access to private sector-led sustainable options for high quality infrastructure development. I am optimistic that we can reach a (bilateral trade) deal that will be of a great significance to both countries. Yesterday, ExxonMobil reached an agreement to export more LNG (liquefied natural gas) to India. US is pleased to announce that the US International Development Finance Organisation will set up office in India. It will help entrepreneurship particularly among Indian women. The Prime Minister and I agreed to have a counter-narcotic working group to tackle the opioid crisis.
