Narendra Modi’s Government has from time to time launched schemes to benefit the urban, rural, entrepreneurs, states, etc. 
 
Some of the schemes unveiled by Modi, whose educational qualifications were recently under limelight, were applauded and also benefitted a large section of the society. 
 
Modi’s vision somewhat turned everyone’s attention to India and not only the business-class benefitted, as he is known to be close to the Ambanis, Adani, even the entrepreneurs embraced the schemes. 
 
In the last two years, these schemes mostly have shown that India has come a long way under the BJP-led Indian government. 
 
Here are the 10 schemes that have been working rather well for the people: 
 
Startup India, Standup India: 
Modi gave flight to entrepreneurial dreams of people and came out with a host of policies to support startups. 
 
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana or <keyword id="6569577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skill-India">Skill India</keyword>: 
With this scheme, Modi ensured that youth is not unemployed and concentrated on enhancing skills of a person in diverse fields. Modi wants to leave China behind and represent India as ‘human resource capital’. 
 
Make in India: 
The Modi-led government wants to transform India’s image into ‘manufacturing hub of the world’. He is asking global leaders and CEOs to manufacture in India and assuring ease of doing business. 
 
<keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword>: 
The BJP government aims to go paperless and ensure that everything is available just a click away. The Centre wants to electronically improve the functioning of the government and make everything transparent. 
 
Jan Dhan Yojana: 
Everyone wants financial security and Modi gave it to them. He aimed at financial inclusion of all Indian households and launched a campaign under which last person residing in India could also open a bank account. 
 
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or Housing For All: 
The government plans housing for all and create an environment for better living. So far, the Centre has identified 305 cities and towns across nine states for implementation of this scheme. 
 
Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, or Save the girl child, educate the girl child: 
Modi government is trying hard to eradicate female foeticide and has come up with many initiatives for girl child. This scheme was launched with initial amount of Rs 100 crore and aims at improving the declining sex ratio. 
 
Atal Pension Yojana, or Pension Fund Scheme: 
Under this, for every contribution made to the pension fund, the Modi government would co-contribute 50 per cent of the total contribution or Rs 1,000 per annum, whichever is lower. The minimum age of joining this is 18 years and maximum age is 40 years. 
 
Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, or electricity for all: 
This is one of the flagship programmes of the power ministry, which will facilitate 24x7 supply of power, even in the rural areas. Under this, strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution network will also be taken.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, Modi wants to overhaul of towns and cities and integrate multiple information and communication technology (ICT) solutions.

<keyword id="2238662" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PM-Modi">PM Modi</keyword>, whose regime completed two years of operations this month, has finally broken his silence on the criticism he received, for allegedly failing to pursue "big bang reforms" as promised. In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, he has said that his government made sure that "India was not standing in a corner". 
 
Modi added that his government had undertaken the maximum reforms, while also saying that there is a lot more that is to be done in the future. 
 
He further supported his government’s efforts by saying that the changes that have been put in place would have been regarded as difficult to implement by previous governments. 
 
Talking about his reluctance to sell PSUs, which are a big issue of debate for his government, he said that, "In any developing country in the world, both public and private sectors have a very important role to play. You can't suddenly get rid of the public sector, nor should you." 
 
"When I came to the government, I used to sit down with all the experts and ask them to define for me what is the 'big bang' for them," Modi said. "Nobody could tell me." 
 
In the last two years, the ruling party has laid a lot of emphasis on new bills and legislatures, which have or are soon to be introduced in the Parliament. 
 
Expressing his desire to liberalize the labour laws of the country, he said that he would like the states to consider the changes. 
 
"Labour reform should not just mean in the interest of industry," Modi said. "Labour reform should also be in the interest of the labourer." 
 
He also talked about removing several restrictions from foreign investment in businesses, while justifying his sales pitches on several international trips, which helped prompt a sharp rise in FDI, as data suggest a rise of 29% in FDI in the latest fiscal year. 
 
"This is the new way. If we want to ensure the success of this interdependent world, I think countries need to cooperate, but at the same time we also need to ensure that there is respect for international norms and international rules."

Nobody told me what ‘big bang’ was, says Modi on being criticised for bringing no huge reforms in two years as PM

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> and his ministers on Saturday highlighted the achievements of the NDA, which turned two on May 26, at a six-hour mega show at Delhi's India Gate. 
	 
	"The people of India have placed their faith in us. We have left no stone unturned in our hard work," Modi said at the conclusion of the programme, titled Ek Nayi Subah" (a new beginning). The event was graced by Bollywood heavyweights, including <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> and Vidya Balan. 

	Here's what Modi said about the performance of the NDA government:
 

	– I am standing before people of the country with satisfaction. We have been able to to get the trust and enthusiasm of people despite a very minute examination of our work. The trust of people is growing day by day. This also increases our confidence.
 

	– On one hand there is the agenda of development (vikaswaad) and on the other hand is the agenda of obstructionism (virodhvaad).

As Modi Government completes one year in power, the Prime Minister commemorated celebrations as ‘Jan Kalyan Parv’ and addressed people on how the country had changed since he took charge.

Modi, who has always presented himself as Prime Servant of the country, said last year was about coal scams but this year was the time for coal auctions. 
 
He also went on to say that people who looted the nation, bad days had come for them. 
 
“I did not guarantee good days for those who looted the country, worse days will come for them,” Modi said. 
 
Meanwhile, he also enlisted a number of initiatives taken by his government such as opening bank accounts, soil cards for farmers, giving subsidy and even boosting tourism. 
 
Although Modi said his government was pro-poor, it is yet to see whether he will be able to fulfil his pledge to provide electricity to farmers in next five years or not.

The government recently compulsorily retired two <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IPS+officers&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPS officers</a> on the basis of a performance review required to be held at the end of 15 and 25 years of service under the All-India service rules. This came out as a strong message to bureaucrats who fail to perform well in their careers. 
 The two officers are <keyword id="103483" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Kumar">Raj Kumar</keyword> <keyword id="4077690" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="dewangan">Dewangan</keyword> from 1992 batch of <keyword id="43945" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhattisgarh">Chhattisgarh</keyword> cadre and <keyword id="4075048" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mayank-Sheel-Chohan">Mayank Sheel Chohan</keyword> from 1998 batch of AGMU cadre. They were found to have put in sub-optimal performance by the concerned state cadre on the basis of their service records, ACRs and assessment of their seniors. 
 The cadre-controlling authority of <keyword id="6405408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPS-officers">IPS officers</keyword> , <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=home+ministry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">home ministry</a>, approved the recommendation of the concerned state cadres to compulsorily retire them from service "in public interest". 
 
"A notice has been served on them and as per rules, they were given three months salary along with compulsory retirement orders duly approved by appointments committee of Cabinet (ACC)," an officer told TOI. 
 
The last time an IPS officer was 'compulsory retired' was nearly 10 to 15 years ago. It reportedly involved officers of Maharashtra cadre. 
 
"It is technically not a punishment but merely an action taken to remove officers seen as deadwood by their respective cadres and the Centre for not being serious in discharge of their duties. The compulsorily retired officer gets all post-retirement benefits," an officer told TOI. 
 
As per sources, two IAS officers were also compulsorily retired recently on the same grounds. 
 
Alternatively, the Centre may ask state to conduct such a review at any time it deems fit in case such a review has not been held at 15 or 25 years of service. 
 
As per rules, the bureaucrat found fit for compulsory retirement is either given at least three months notice in writing or three month's pay and allowances in lieu of such notice. The government, in the case of Dewangan and Chohan, opted for the latter.

	Presently, under ‘one nation, one grid, one frequency’, the Available Transfer Capacity (ATC) of southern Indian states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Puducherry has increased by 71% to 5,900 MW from 3,450 MW in 2013-14. <o:p></o:p>

	“Transmission has gone up remarkably by 71% in only 18 months and most of the southern region today is power surplus-- from an era when they used to buy power at as high as Rs 16-Rs 18 a unit to reaching a point when they do not have to pay more than Rs 4-5 now. Usually, power is available under Rs 3 and with the launch of Vidyut Pravah,” Goyal said.

	After Goyal assumed charge, he accepted the challenge of turning around a sector that was symbolic of the impact of decades of inefficient bureaucracy coupled with visionless policies.

	Areas like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=energy+efficiency&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">energy efficiency</a> have never been so popular in India. Today, India is running the world’s largest energy efficiency programme and on a recent visit to the US and UK, the two nations actually took energy efficiency lessons from India.<o:p></o:p>

	Also, one of the biggest achievements of Goyal-led ministry has been the introduction of UDAY or Ujwal to light up the power sector. UDAY is an answer to pull the state distribution companies out of their financial and operational inefficiencies.<o:p></o:p>

	 “I think efficiency gains in terms of UDAY, where we are talking about Rs 1,80,000 crore savings per year, when all states come on board, which I am quite sure of, all these gains will be enough to take care of the existing requirements of the discoms. I think we will have to perk up our acts, we will have to be efficient across states and the political pressure of people demanding better quality service and affordable power will make sure that (hopefully) we don't have to increase tariffs,” said Goyal.<o:p></o:p>
 Goyal's other focus area has been renewable energy. From just 3000 MW <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> generation since independence, he set an ambitious target of setting up 1,00,000 MW, or 100 GW, of solar capacity within five years and by 2019.<o:p></o:p>

	In 2015-16, the largest ever wind capacity addition of 3,300 MW was achieved. There has been a 157% increase in solar capacity since 2014 of 4,132 MW. Solar projects of capacity 20,904 MW were tendered in 2015-16 of which, projects of 11,209 MW have already been awarded. 32 Solar Parks of 19,400 MW capacity have been sanctioned in 20 states. <o:p></o:p>
 <keyword id="6356966" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal">Coal</keyword> is the mainstay of India’s energy needs. The crisis arising from the cancellation of 204 coal blocks by the Supreme Court was answered with a fair and transparent auction and allocation process which, is estimated to bring in potential revenue for coal bearing states of about Rs 3.44 lakh crore over the lifetime of 74 mines.

	Electricity generation has also picked up, almost matching demand. Energy deficit during the current year has been reduced to its lowest level ever of 2.1% from 11.1% in 2008-09. Similarly, peak shortage has been reduced from 11.9% in 2008-09 to 3.2%, again, the lowest ever.

	Thermal electricity generation grew at 7.4% in 2015-16 with a strong performance in March of 15.9% y-o-y. To sustain this growth the highest ever capacity addition of 46,738 MW in conventional power has been attained in 2014-16, accounting for around a fifth of our current conventional capacity.<o:p></o:p>

	 “All the above extraordinary results have been made possible by the joint efforts of Team India and the unprecedented stress on transparency and accountability in governance. With our Government’s initiatives and the support of 125 crore Indians we will soon be successful in illuminating the life of every Indian thus creating an Ujwal Bharat,” said Goyal.

Two years on, here’s the report card of Modi army’s lieutenant Piyush Goyal

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> called on Indians to support his government in building the India of peoples’ dreams. As the <keyword id="6355125" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NDA-government">NDA Government</keyword> completed one year in office on Tuesday, Modi wrote a letter to people of the country highlighting achievements and setting goals. 
 
"We assumed office at a time when confidence in the India story was waning. Un-abated corruption and indecisiveness had paralyzed the government. People had been left helpless against ever climbing inflation and economic insecurity. Urgent and decisive action was needed," he wrote. 
 
Modi, 64, further wrote that his Government was dedicated to the poor and marginalised and was working towards empowering them.

My dear fellow Citizens! 
 
Service, in our Indian ethos is the ultimate duty - Seva Parmo Dharma. One year ago, you had entrusted me with the responsibility and honour of serving you as your Pradhan Sevak. I have devoted every moment of every day, and every element of my body and spirit, in fulfilling the same with fullest sincerity and honesty. 
 
We assumed office at a time when confidence in the India story was waning. Un-abated corruption and indecisiveness had paralyzed the government. People had been left helpless against ever climbing inflation and economic insecurity. Urgent and decisive action was needed. 
 
We systematically went about addressing these challenges. Runaway prices were immediately brought under control. The languishing economy was rejuvenated, building on stable, policy-driven proactive governance. Discretionary allotment of our precious natural resources to a chosen few was replaced with transparent auctions. Firm steps were taken against Black Money, from setting up a SIT and passing a stringent black money law, to generating international consensus against the same. Uncompromising adherence to the principle of purity, in action as well as intent, ensured a corruption-free government. Significant changes have been brought about in work culture, nurturing a combination of empathy as well as professionalism, systems as well breaking of silos. State governments have been made equal partners in the quest for national development, building the spirit of Team India. Most importantly, we have been able to restore Trust in the government. 
 
Guided by the principle of Antyodaya, our Government is dedicated to the poor, marginalized and those left behind. We are working towards empowering them to become our soldiers in the war against poverty. Numerous measures and schemes have been initiated - from making school toilets to setting up IITs, IIMs and AIIMS; from providing a vaccination cover to our children to initiating a people-driven Swachh Bharat mission; from ensuring a minimum pension to our labourers to providing social security to the common man; from enhancing support to our farmers hit by natural calamities to defending their interests at WTO; from empowering one and all with self attestation to delivering subsidies directly to people's banks; from universalizing the banking system to funding the unfunded small businesses; from irrigating fields to rejuvenating Ma Ganga; from moving towards 24x7 power to connecting the nation through road and rail; from building homes for the homeless to setting up smart cities, and from connecting the North-East to prioritizing development of Eastern India.

While the erstwhile UPA government took pride in creating a million jobs in 2009, the opposition blamed Modi of his inability to create sufficient jobs for the youth in the country. According to The Times of India report, all information officers have been asked to complete the task quickly, though it's a tough one considering that the exercise to map both direct and indirect jobs is being undertaken for the first time. "The task is also to estimate the potential number of jobs that can be created because of the ongoing schemes and programmes," an official told TOI. The list will soon be ready and would be communicated to the public through appropriate channels. The labour bureau’s report shows a poor job generation record at just 1.1 % last year. Earlier, it was assumed that the lack of jobs would be at 5%. The <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> in its poll manifesto had promised two crore jobs every year.

Prosecutors said Lorance ordered his men to open fire immediately in violation of the military's rules of engagement, which requires soldiers to hold fire unless they have evidence of hostile action or hostile intent. They said three men on a motorcycle approached the patrol in July 2012. Two were killed and the third ran away.
Although the military's rules of engagement often vary depending on battlefield circumstances, troops have always been told to hold their fire unless they feel threatened, such as having a weapon pointed in the direction of U.S. forces.
One soldier among those ordered to open fire by Lorance testified against him at trial, saying "my life wasn't threatened at the time," <a href="http://foxnewsinsider.com/2013/10/18/kelly-file-us-soldier-clint-lorance-gets-20-year-sentence-afghan-battlefield-shooting">according to</a> Fox News Insider.

Indian <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa, on the sidelines of the <keyword id="157954" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shanghai-Cooperation-Organisation">Shanghai Cooperation Organisation</keyword> (SCO) Summit. 
The two premiers shook hands before sitting down for delegation-level talks. 
 
Reportedly, Indian delegation included National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar while Sartaj Aziz, Sharif's advisor on foreign affairs and national security, was in the Pakistani delegation. 
 
The previous night, Modi and Sharif had exchanged pleasantries and chatted briefly at the dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin for leaders of five BRICS nations and 10 SCO nations in Ufa. 
 
It is expected that Modi and Sharif will discuss the status of the bilateral ties and the future direction. 
 
However, Indian government sources told Economic Times that Modi-Sharif talks need not be construed a prelude to a resumption of the dialogue process between the two countries. 
 
Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said that it has always been (Pakistan) Prime Minister's policy to seek cordial and cooperative ties with all neighbouring countries including India. “It was in the pursuit of this objective that the prime minister would be meeting the Indian prime minister for a comprehensive exchange on all issues of common interest,” he had said. 
 
Meanwhile, sources indicated ET that Modi will strongly raise India's concerns on militancy with Pakistan and that all outstanding issues including inaction against Hafiz Saeed and 26/11 mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. 
 
Modi and Sharif had met in Kathmandu last year for the SAARC Summit but they did not have a bilateral meeting over acrimony between the two countries at that time.
