After developing several varieties of <keyword id="6368690" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mango">mango</keyword> that he named after celebrities and leading personalities, renowned <keyword id="228712" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="horticulturist">horticulturist</keyword> <keyword id="2839276" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Haji-Kalimullah-Khan">Haji Kalimullah Khan</keyword> has grown one more variety of the royal fruit which he named after <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>. 
 Kalimullah Khan, 74, recipient of Padma Shri award, has named his newly-developed mango variety as '<keyword id="61671" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="NaMo">NaMo</keyword> Aam'. 
 
Explaining his logic behind the name, Kalimullah told reporters, "Just like the Prime Minister, who has joined the league of world famous leaders, this mango will also be in the limelight and promote brotherhood." 
 
"By inviting the heads of neighbouring nations to his swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister, Modi has extended an olive branch to them. Better relations with neighbours will foster brotherhood in the world. I have been inspired to name my new variety of mango as Namo Aam," Kalimullah, who is also nicknamed 'Mango Man' of UP's Malihabad region said. 
 
Kalimullah, who has been growing mangoes since 1957, describes the 'NaMo' variety as "beautiful and juicy". 
 
The horticulturist has a penchant to develop and grow new and rare varieties of mangoes and name them after celebrities. So far he has named the varieties after <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actress <keyword id="6366471" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aishwarya-Rai">Aishwarya Rai</keyword>, cricket icon <keyword id="6354267" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sachin-Tendulkar">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword>, among others. 
 
Kalimullah said he names the new mango varieties after celebrities to make the legends "immortal". 
 
Khan's mango orchard is spread over five acres area at Malihabad, in which he has developed new varieties of mangoes. 
 
 
The orchard has about a century-old prized tree, on which he started working in 1987 to develop the craft of growing different varieties on it. He has named the mangoes grown on this tree after his family members, who were also mango growers. 
 
Kalimullah's 'magic tree' has borne over 300 varieties of mangoes. Every fruit has a tiny tin label of identification on its pale green pedicle. 
 
 
His rare technique of growing multiple varieties of mangoes of different shapes, sizes and hues on one tree has helped him get Padma Shri. 
 Replying to a question, Kallimullah said he plans to name the next variety of mango after Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>, who is a "trendsetter" in politics. 
 
 
Underlining the needs to boost mango export, Kalimullah said he wants to develop a sugar-free variety of mango for diabetic patients. 
 
The 'Mango Man' described that developing new varieties of mangoes was a kind of creation and not tampering with nature.

Now you can eat NaMo! A mango named after Narendra Modi

Mangoes in Valsad district of Gujarat are getting a VIP treatment these days; thanks to untimely rain that posed a serious threat to their survival. The 300 bigha mango orchards spread across five villages in Valsad district are being guarded by eight stern-looking men on horses. 
As per the Economic Times report, these stick-wielding men ensure that mangoes are not stolen by thieves and mischievous elements. There are nearly 45 such men, traditionally known as 'Pathans', who are guarding large number of orchards in nearly 25 villages of this Valsadi hafoos hub. 
 
Mangoes have become a precious commodity that needs to be well-guarded after nearly 70% of the crop was wiped away due to five wspells since February. These Pathans are specially called from Barmer in Rajasthan along with their horses. 
 
"When mango production falls, chances of theft are very high as the fruit would fetch higher prices in market. We are left with no option but to deploy security to protect whatever is left on the trees," Rasesh Desai, whose family owns 12,000 mango trees including 5,000 Valsadi hafoos trees, told the ET. The orchards are spread across five villages of Lilapore, Kundi, Dhamdachi, Thakkarwada and Rabda near Valsad. Desai has been paying each guard Rs 8,000-Rs 10,000 per person a month. 
 
Musa Khan Pathan, who supplies these security men, said, "The practice of hiring Pathans from Barmer started 20 years ago. Initially, people in Valsad called us to protect their villages from thieves. But our role has been limited to mango orchards now." 
 
"Our presence is enough for miscreants to stay away from entering the orchards," he said. 
 
"When Pathans patrol the orchards on horse back, people think twice before any misadventure," said Desai. 
 
In some cases the entire village hires services of these Pathans to protect their mango orchards. Village like Thigra, Solvada and Khajori in Valsad have small orchards so they have collectively hired services of Pathans and the cost will be evenly distributed among farmers.

Indians are waiting to watch the human side of Modi, not just his wild side

<ul><li>Last month, <keyword id="152170" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Aramco">Saudi Aramco</keyword> signed a joint venture agreement with three Indian <keyword id="6359072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil">oil</keyword> companies to develop a $44 billion refinery in the port city of Ratnagiri, in the state of <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>. </li><li>The proposed refinery that will require 15,000 acres of land and is targeting a daily output of 1.2 million barrels a day. </li><li>However, around 80% of the land required is currently used for mango and cashew plantations, as well as fishing.</li></ul> The expansion plans of Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company by revenue, are being threatened by an unlikely force - India’s mango farmers. Last month, the Saudi government-owned oil giant signed a joint venture agreement with three Indian oil companies -- Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum -- to develop a $44 billion refinery in the port city of Ratnagiri, in the state of Maharashtra. Thousands of farmers, however, are challenging the project by refusing to give up their land. Saudi Aramco will own a 50% stake in the proposed refinery, which will require 15,000 acres of land and is targeting a daily output of 1.2 million barrels a day. The Saudi Arabian oil giant is <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/2018/05/12/proposed-ratnagiri-refinery-gets-another-middle-eastern-investor#gs.V4g4ztY">planning to dilute its stake</a> and bring the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) aboard. The refinery will give both companies an assured demand for their crude oil. The refinery’s Indian promoters have touted the number of jobs the project will create, estimated to be around 150,000, to no avail. To allay concerns, they have also pledged to maintain tracts for mango and cashew plantations. An uneasy trade-off The project, which has been in the works since 2015, is important to increasing India’s refining capacity and securing a steady domestic supply of oil. This is an urgent need given the high cost of importing oil and the government’s ever-widening current account deficit. However, the immediate cost to the farmers in the Ratnagiri region isn’t insignificant. Around 80% of the land that has been earmarked for the refinery is used by these farmers to grow mangoes and cashews, and by fishermen. Around <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/energy/oil-gas/saudi-aramcos-rs-3-trillion-india-project-will-political-agitation-kill-yet-another-big-venture/articleshow/63954105.cms">22,000 farmers and 4,500 fishermen</a> are expected to be impacted. Farmers from 14 villages in the Ratnagiri area are protesting against the project. The issue has reached fever pitch, with Opposition parties like the Congress offering their support to the farmers. Even the Shiv Sena, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/shiv-sena-to-go-it-alone-in-2019-general-elections-1803544">a breakaway ally</a> of the BJP government in Maharashtra, <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/won-t-allow-ratnagiri-refinery-to-be-set-up-at-any-circumstance-uddhav-118041201104_1.html">has opposed the project.</a> A thorn in the government’s side The civil resistance to <keyword id="6364579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="land-acquisition">land acquisition</keyword> has been a proverbial thorn in side for the Narendra <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> administration. A number of <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/infrastructure-narendra-modis-pet-mega-highway-projects-make-little-progress-land-acquisition-protests-cash-crunch-blamed/571909/">transport and infrastructure projects</a> have been stalled, including a <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/gujarat-farmers-protest-against-bullet-train-land-acquisition-process/story-nCgyWlcO89qaKtxe3tLioO.html">landmark bullet train programme</a> in Gujarat. Taking advantage of an impasse in the recently-concluded session of Parliament, the government was able to pass <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/two-bills-passed-amid-din-in-lok-sabha-proceedings-remain-paralysed/articleshow/63313989.cms">the Specific Relief (Amendment Bill)</a> without any discussion. The bill, which is pending in the Rajya Sabha, prevents courts from imposing injunctions in cases involving infrastructure projects wherein property rights are alleged to be violated. The move followed the Modi government’s <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/business/land-acquisition-mess-will-the-real-narendra-modi-please-stand-up-2380400.html">failed attempts to water down the protection clauses in the country’s Land Acquisition Bill</a>, which was passed in 2013. Under the bill, 70% of the relevant land-owners are required to give their consent for an acquisition to go through. The promoters of the Ratnagiri project are still optimistic. For its part, the Maharashtra government is looking into the possibility of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/nagpur/vidarbha-best-location-for-proposed-refinery-ashish/articleshow/63887064.cms">relocating the project</a> to the landlocked region of Vidarbha. The refinery was initially supposed to commence operations by 2022. But now, given the current unrest, that looks highly unlikely. The land acquisition might even be delayed until the end of 2019, when both national and state elections in Maharashtra are concluded. India will have to continue to source most of its oil requirements from other countries until then.

(Image source- pixabay.com) <ul><li>The Indian government has approved a new policy to double agricultural exports to $60 billion by 2022, the same year by which it intends to double farmer incomes. </li><li>Under the policy, all restrictions on the <keyword id="35094" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="export">export</keyword> of organic and processed food items will be lifted. These include mandi (wholesale) taxes, minimum export prices, duties and quota restrictions. </li><li>Not only will this help <keyword id="45092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers">farmers</keyword> tap into foreign markets better, but will stabilise export flows and improve relations with <keyword id="44844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trade">trade</keyword> partners. </li><li>The policy will also involve a number of initiatives such as the standardisation of agricultural produce, the development of supply chains and shipping infrastructure, the amendment of conflicting regulations and investment in R&amp;D. </li></ul>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always stressed that one of his administration’s key priorities is to boost farmer incomes, the progress on which has been hindered by persistently low retail food prices. With this in mind, on 6 December, his Union Cabinet <a href="http://www.pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1554960">approved a new policy</a> to double agricultural exports to $60 billion by 2022, the same year by which it intends to double farmer incomes, and make India one of the world’s 10 largest agricultural exporters. The move follows a wave of farmer protests in India with the goal of obtaining better prices and a waiver of farm loans. Under the policy, all restrictions on the export of organic and processed food items will be lifted. These include mandi taxes, which are fees levied on the sale of produce that vary from state to state, minimum export prices, duties and quota restrictions. In addition, perishable exports will be granted single-window clearance. Not only will this help farmers tap into foreign markets better, but will stabilise trade flows and improve relations with partners as export bans and duties often tend to be a sticking point during trade negotiations. In the past, the Indian government has instituted export bans on certain food items in response to soaring domestic demand. The policy will also involve a number of initiatives such as the standardisation of agricultural produce, the development of supply chains and shipping infrastructure, the amendment of conflicting regulations and investment in logistics and technology to make smallholder-farmers trade-ready. India’s agricultural exports, which roughly comprise a tenth of the country’s overall merchandise exports, are currently dominated by three items: basmati <keyword id="13726" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rice">rice</keyword>, meat and marine products. In an attempt to diversify India’s exports, the central government will invest ₹14 billion to merge a variety of export incentive schemes and set up specialised export-focused clusters in a number of agricultural strongholds in India. There will be clusters dedicated to tea, coffee, bananas, mangoes, pomegranates and spices like turmeric, Suresh Prabhu, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/union-cabinet-approves-agriculture-export-policy/articleshow/66974576.cms">media outlets</a>. To ensure quality control in terms of production, logistics and distribution, a programme called “Brand India” will also be set up with the participation of state governments and private investors. Each state will also be expected to establish a specific department that will be tasked with implementing the agricultural export policy. One of the major aims envisioned under the policy is too boost the export of value-added items and to cause a shift in India’s current practice of exporting residual produce and make it become a producer of commodities that are exclusively for the export market.
