Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> today left for the <keyword id="6354458" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="US">US</keyword> after ending his engagements in Switzerland , where he secured the European nation's support for India's NSG membership ahead of a key meeting of the 48-nation bloc. 
 
"Au Revoir Geneve! In under half a day, PM completes visit and emplanes for Washington DC," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. 
 
During the visit, India and Switzerland also agreed to step up cooperation to unearth blackmoney Indians stashed in Swiss banks. 
 In Washington, the Prime Minister will meeet President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword> at the Oval Office, their sixth after Modi assumed power. He is also scheduled to address a joint session of US Congress on June 8. 
 
Modi is on a five-nation tour. He began his travel in Afghanistan, then travelled to Qatar and Switzerland. 
 After the US, he will visit <keyword id="3746" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword> at the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for the US

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Prime+Minister+Narendra+Modi+">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> arrived in <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword> on Thursday and will remain there for the next five days. This is his second visit to the US after taking charge as the PM. 
 He will address world leaders at a landmark UN sustainable development summit and interact with senior CEOs, including <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> CEO <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>'s CEO <keyword id="164502" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sundar-Pichai">Sundar Pichai</keyword>, and the Indian diaspora in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley">Silicon Valley</a>. 
 Earlier, Modi was received by Indian Ambassador <keyword id="237000" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arun-K-Singh">Arun K Singh</keyword>, India's envoy to the UN Asoke Mukerji, Consul General <keyword id="1448146" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dnyaneshwar-Mulay">Dnyaneshwar Mulay</keyword> and their spouses at the airport. 
 
The PM will have a packed schedule for the next two days in New York and then in California from September 26-27. 
 
On September 28, Modi will return to New York for a bilateral meet with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=President+Barack+Obama+">President Barack Obama</a> and will later attend a high-level peacekeeping summit at the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword>. 
 
He will address global heads of state on Friday at the Sustainable Development Summit hosted by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+Secretary+General+Ban+Ki-moon+">UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon</a> when the new and ambitious post-2015 development agenda will be adopted. 
 India will also host the G-4 summit in New York on September 26, before Modi leaves for the West Coast for a packed two-day trip during when he will have meetings with Zuckerberg, Apple CEO <keyword id="191843" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tim-Cook">Tim Cook</keyword> and Pichai. 
 
He will also meet Obama on September 28, his third summit meeting with the US president in about a year. 
 
Modi is expected to focus on giving a further push to early and urgent reform of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Security+Council+">Security Council</a> and to send an "unambiguous message" of "zero tolerance against terrorism". 
 
In a letter to the UN Secretary General in July, Modi had said that that the UN must be made more effective for dealing with new security challenges as "we are now living in an era when non-state military actors are a major factor." 
 
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Asoke Mukerji has said that the Prime Minister's speech at the Sustainable Development summit will focus on "Agenda 2030" since he "has given a lot of attention to the substance of the development agenda." 
 
Among the ambitious 17 goals to be adopted by the UN for the next 15 years is complete poverty eradication, zero hunger, quality education, gender equality, sustainable cities and communities and clean water and sanitation. 
 
In his letter to the UN chief, Modi had also underscored that eliminating poverty by 2030 should "unquestionably" be at the heart of the post-2015 Development Agenda. 
 
"The most acute forms of poverty still remain the most pressing problem and require direct, urgent and sustained interventions. Addressing the needs, concerns and human rights of 1.3 billion poor people in the world is not merely a question of their survival and dignity, but also a vital necessity for an enduring peaceful, sustainable and just international order," he said.

US to PM Modi: Welcome back. This will be an epic trip to remember!

In the remaining time, he attended 33 back-to-back engagements and meetings in the US, Portugal and the Netherlands, thus making it one of the busiest foreign trips by an Indian PM. Adhering to his rule of not spending a night in a country unless there is an engagement scheduled for the next day, PM Modi didn’t spend a night in either Netherlands or Portugal. The same rule was followed when he flew from Lisbon to Washington DC, thereon to Hague and then back to India. His itinerary included flying 10 hours to Lisbon from Delhi, where he had a briefing in the VVIP lounge of the Lisbon Airport itself, thus saving time that he could have spent in going to a hotel and checking in. From the airport, he left straight for Portugal’s foreign ministry. After meetings with the officials and having a working lunch, PM Modi visited the Champalimaud Foundation, held an interaction with the Indian community and flew out from the Lisbon Airport for Washington DC. After being in flight bound to Washington for nearly eight hours, he checked into the Willard Continental Hotel with his team, where he had 17 engagements over the next two days. However, instead of spending a second night in Washington DC, he flew to the Netherlands, had about seven engagements, and then flew straight to Delhi.

33 hours in flight and 33 back to back meetings! PM Modi surely had a busy trip abroad

Former president Donald Trump has said Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> will meet him next week during his upcoming three-day visit to the US. While the Republican presidential candidate slammed India as an "abuser" on the issue of import tariffs, he described Modi as a "fantastic man". PM Modi will be visiting the US from September 21 to 23. Speaking on Tuesday at his first public appearance following the recent apparent assassination attempt, Trump said Modi will meet him next week when he is in the US. "So when India, which is a very big abuser. He (Modi) happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he's fantastic. I mean, fantastic man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic," Trump said, reiterating that India imposes heavy tariffs on imports. The former president revealed the information as he spoke about trade and tariffs while responding to a question at a town hall meeting in Flint, Michigan. He went on to say, "These people are the sharpest people. They're not a little bit backwards...You know the expression, they're at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough. Brazil is very tough....China is the toughest of all, but we were taking care of China with the tariffs." "So we're going to do a reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents, if they charge us USD 2, if they charge us a hundred per cent, 250, we charge them the same thing. And what's going to happen? Everything's going to disappear, and we're going to end up having free trade again. And if it doesn't disappear, we're going to take in a lot of money," he said. Modi will begin his trip with the <keyword id="23214075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quad-Leaders-Summit" source="keywords">Quad Leaders' Summit</keyword> being hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. The summit will be attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan. Modi will then travel to New York and address a mega community event in Long Island on September 22. He will address world leaders at the landmark Summit of the Future event at the UN headquarters the next day. Modi's visit comes less than two months before the US heads into presidential elections with Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the top job. The US general elections will take place on November 5.

<ul><li><keyword id="826" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goa">Goa</keyword> Congress General Secretary, <keyword id="183632" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sankalp-Amonkar">Sankalp Amonkar</keyword> wrote a letter to the Guinness officials in the UK nominating Modi in the <keyword id="6701149" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guinness-World-Records">Guinness’ World Records</keyword> for ‘the highest number of foreign visits’. </li><li>In a press conference on Wednesday, Amonkar said “the Prime Minister has spent more time abroad than in India”. </li><li>The government has paid an overall of ₹355,30,38,465 for his trips and the most expensive one was a nine-day trip when he visited France, Germany and Canada in one go. </li></ul>On Wednesday, the Goa Congress <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/india-news/enter-narendra-modis-name-for-highest-number-of-foreign-visits-congress-writes-to-guinness-world-records/1241065/">quizzically said</a> that it is “overwhelmed and extremely happy” to nominate Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to the Guinness’ World Records for ‘the highest number of foreign visits’. Goa Congress General Secretary, Sankalp Amonkar, sent a letter to the Guinness officials in the UK on Wednesday via registered post and released a copy of the letter to the media as well. He had filed an RTI to get information about Modi’s foreign trips, the details of which he included in the letter. Modi has been on 41 trips to 52 countries in his tenure of four years. The government has paid an overall of ₹355,30,38,465 for his trips. Amonkar stated in a press conference that Modi has correctly used Indian resources and had become a role model for the future generation. However, everyone was left questioning if he meant it because he further added that he wants “to highlight the ridiculousness of the Modi regime, where the Prime Minister has spent more time abroad than in India”. Modi has been abroad for a cumulative of 165 days in the past four years. Amonkar also made it a point to mention that <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/goa-congress-sends-modis-name-for-guinness-record/article24393654.ece">Indian rupee skidded</a> to ₹69.03 against the US dollar making the Indian currency most vulnerable and worst-performing currency in Asia. The government spent ₹31,25,78,000 on Modi's nine-day tri-nation visit to France, Germany and Canada. It was the highest amount ever spent for a single trip. The lowest was spent on the PM's trip to Bhutan. Modi's first ever trip<a href="https://www.republicworld.com/india-news/general-news/heres-why-goa-congress-has-recommended-pm-modis-name-for-guinness-world-records"> abroad</a> in his tenure was on 15 and 16 June 2014 and had an expenditure of ₹2,45,27,465.

Make no mistake — the United States and its allies are more consequential for India's future than its relationship with Russia," Shinde wrote.India needs to leverage its historical ties with Russia to secure its economy and security, so Modi isn't just in Russia for a goodwill trip.<h2 id="c79db6fd-b57b-4ff5-8f16-bc16c77b8021">Reducing the trade imbalance</h2>A key agenda item for the visit is to reduce a huge bilateral trade imbalance, Kwatra said.India imports about $60 billion of goods a year from Russia, but Russia buys less than 10% of this amount from India, Bloomberg reported.Modi may also touch on China's activities in the Indo-Pacific region, Kwatra added.India is trying to manage its relationship with China, which has been testy since a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-china-border-clashes-could-cause-more-indian-ocean-activity-2020-7">border dispute in 2020</a>. Modi skipped the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kazakhstan last week.There's also the matter of Russia's ties with China.At the summit last week, Putin said <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/video/kazakhstan-china-government-russia-government-russia-5b1c1a8f402c400d8d703543b0562b51">Russia's relationship with China</a> is in the "best period in history."Modi now needs to cozy up to Putin to counter China's advances."The reason for the time-tested stability in India-Russia ties is to maintain a continental balance in the Eurasian heartland. Modi's Russia visit shows India isn't worried about making the US mad

After ending his five-day long US visit, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> thanked US for a highly “successful and satisfactory trip.” 
 
“Thank You America,” Prime Minister Modi said on conclusion of his last official engagement at an event organised by the US Indian Business Council (USIBC). “My visit has been very successful. From here I am going to airport directly,” Modi said. 
 India’s US Ambassador S Jaishankar and Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal, came to see off Modi. On Monday, US President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword> hosted a dinner for Modi, and on Tuesday, the two leaders met for about two hours. Vice-President <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword> and Secretary of State John Kerry, too, hosted dinners for the Prime Minister, following which, he went to the Capitol Hill for a tea hosted in his honour by Joe Boehner, Speaker of the US House of Representatives. 
 
In total, he met more than 50 US lawmakers and three Governors, including South Carolina’s Nikki Haley.

Modi Thanks US Before Leaving For
India

On Sunday, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> hosted a 'Digital India' dinner for top tech CEOs at San Jose, California in the US. 
 
At the dinner, some of the prominent leaders who met the Prime Minister were John Chambers (Executive Chairman of Cisco Systems), Sundar Pichai (Google CEO), Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO) and Paul Jacobs (Executive Chairman of Qualcomm). 
 The trip to <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> forms part of Modi's visit to the US' west coast - the first by an Indian prime minister in more than three decades. 
 
"With Prime Minister Narendra Modi in office, we have the opportunity to reinvigorate US-India relations and bring our partnership to new heights," Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee said in a welcome statement as soon as Modi landed at San Jose Airport.

PM Narendra Modi hosts 'Digital India' dinner

It’s almost a year and four months since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India. The progress report certainly has its own negatives, but there is certainly one assurance for India that the world knows about the country, thanks to Modi’s frequent foreign trips. 
Modi’s upcoming trip to the US is a bit different from his earlier visits. While earlier ones were more concerned about engaging in diplomatic relations, economic dealings and allied issues, in this trip Modi’s itinerary lays special focus on Silicon Valley. 
 
He will be dealing more and more with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs this time. Besides the public reception at the SAP Center in San Jose, Modi will meet with some of the Valley's top CEOs, many of them of Indian origin, including Google's Sundar Pichai, Adobe System's Shantanu Narayen, and Sandisk's Sanjay Mehrotra. Some of the firms have forked out $50,000 each towards a $800,000 fund that is being used for the community reception, which will have free ticketed entry. Although SAP's capacity is 17,496, the demand for tickets is said to be far greater. 
 
Organizers have decided to put giant screens outside to let people hear Modi. After organizing such Modi jamborees in New York, Dubai, Toronto, and Sydney , the Prime Minister's team appears to have developed a template that impressed community activists in Silicon Valley too. "They are like a well-oiled machine and they have some excellent ground rules," a local coordinator gushed, revealing how they had been instructed not to take a $50,000 contribution from the State Bank of India overseas operations because the PMO did not want public funds to be used for the event. 
 
Modi is learnt to have planned a visit to campuses of Google and Tesla, while a sortie to a social media company such as Facebook and Twitter is under consideration if an interaction with users can be organized. Although Tesla hit the headlines last week with its new car breaking all ratings record (it scored 103 out of 100 causing Consumer Report to revise its rating sytem), it is not the company's $ 100,000 car that is of so much interest to the PM and his team as their home battery pack. In fact, two key Tesla executives of Indian origin (CFO Deepak Ahuja and CIO Jai Vijayan), the first one retiring and the second one on a burn-out sabbatical, are staying on till the end of the month till the Prime Minister's visit. 
 
However, fearing a possible clash of idealism Modi will not engage in any academic discussions at Stanford or Berkeley universities.

 The one key aspect of Modi’s emerging <keyword id="44266" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-policy">foreign policy</keyword> approach is clear: re-establish close relationships with Asian neighbours to position India as a strong regional power, and leverage it to counter China’s burgeoning regional influence and economic/military acumen. 
 
In fact, during his Japan visit he took the ‘look east’ policy a step ahead, turning it into ‘act Asia’ policy (as Sushma Swaraj put it recently) by trying to convert rhetoric into actionable steps. Aggressively marketing the ‘Make in India’ campaign and signing pacts leading to Japanese investments worth $35 billion over a five-year period reflected Modi’s resolve to translate foreign visits. Such visits used to be mere photo opportunities for many of his predecessors, but Modi translated it into initiatives that will enhance bilateral trade and help grow the domestic economy. 
 This was evident in his just-concluded Australia visit where he finalised Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to boost trade between the two countries; and Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement which will enable uranium export from Australia and provide a much-needed leg-up to India's power-generation capacity. Modi clarion call at the <keyword id="51196" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="G-20">G-20</keyword> meet at Brisbane for close cooperation in the fight against black money meant that trade talks are not entirely isolated from larger political issues back at home. 
 
The fact that economic and trade agenda is at the core of Modi’s foreign policy was also evident when his government initiated the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India. It is seen as a strategic move to tilt the relation with the bigger Asian neighbour economic growth. 
While China is keen to leverage from India’s strength as a big market, India is looking for significant Chinese investments to build infrastructure critical to long-term economic growth. 
 
While Modi did not rush to the ‘big uncle’ US soon after assuming power, as many of his predecessors did, and despite the strained diplomatic relationship between India and US after the ill-treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, Modi sent a clear message that India is serious about stronger engagement with the US. The decision to attract investment in India’s $250 billion defence sector, which will involve significant US partnership, underlined this. 
 
The fact that despite a tight schedule Modi found time to meet his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu during his US visit reiterated the fact that Modi’s Middle East policy is going to be tilted towards Israel than the Arab countries. This also means that alliance with Israel in the field of defence, which grew significantly over the last two decades, is likely to be strengthened. Russia too is going to be a key ally in the field of defence besides space exploration and energy, including nuclear power. 
 
Will Modi mend or break the strained India-Pakistan relationship is another key question. While he shared some camaraderie with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif soon after assuming power, calling off secretary level talks over Pakistani envoy’s engagement with Kashmiri separatists means Modi can be unpredictable on this front. 
 
Adding Modi’s call for deeper people-to-people alliance among BRICS countries at the recent summit in Brazil, one begins to get a glimpse of the would-be foreign policy perspective of Modi. He is mostly going to stress on closer ties with the US (Obama will visit India in January), Israel and Asian countries such as Japan and Russia(Putin will visit India next month), while positioning India as a counter-force to China and being cautious about how to go about dealing with Pakistan.

Modi is also often attacked for his foreign trips. A man who was denied a visa to the US owing to Gujarat riots, has now visited the country thrice in two years and is now scheduled for a fourth trip soon.

Remember Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s grand reception at Madison Square Garden in <keyword id="72226" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> last year. Now Indian-Americans in California have begun preparations for a similar kind of reception for Modi, who would be the only second Indian PM to visit the state with a trip planned in September to <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, reported PTI. 

	To accord the grand reception at Silicon Valley, representatives of Indian-American organisations recently held their first full-fledged preparatory meeting in Sunnyvale, California. 
 The Indian PM would first attend the Annual General Assembly meeting of the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> in New York in September-end. After that, he would visit Silicon Valley and address Indian-Americans, including technology entrepreneurs. 

	"We have planned a community reception on the evening of September 27 at the SAP Centre, San Jose where close to 20,000 people are expected to gather to hear him speak," Khanderao Kand of newly-formed Indo-American Community of West Coast USA told PTI. 
 

	The meeting was addressed by the Indian Ambassador to the US, Arun K Singh, via a video conference. 
 Among others, it was attended by Consul-General of India in <keyword id="12161" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="San-Francisco">San Francisco</keyword>, Venkatesh Ashok, and <keyword id="667859" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vijay-Chauthaiwale">Vijay Chauthaiwale</keyword>, in-charge foreign relations department of BJP. 

	Chauthaiwale is on a visit to San Francisco Bay Area to oversee the preparations for the reception. 
 

	"The event is a historic moment for the Indian community in Silicon Valley and the diaspora in general," he said. 
 

	Modi's visit is considered significant, especially with regard to his 'Digital India' initiative that aims to use technology in connecting people and transforming governance in India. 
 

	Moreover, he would be the second Indian PM to visit San Francisco-Bay Area after Jawahar Lal Nehru's trip in 1949. 
 

	San Francisco-Bay Area, of which Silicon Valley is a part, is home to about half-a-million-strong Indian-Americans. 
 

	Last year when Modi visited the US, he was given a grand reception at Madison Square Garden. He addressed nearly 20,000 Indian-Americans there.

Silicon Valley to give PM Modi a rockstar-like welcome!

Indian PM Narendra Modi will be meeting his good friend, the US President Barack Obama, for probably the last time in the latter’s regime as POTUS in Hangzhou, China next month. Both the leaders would be there to attend the G20 summit on September 4th and 5th. 
 
Before that, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker will be coming to India for the Indo-US strategic and commercial dialogue in Delhi on August 30th and 31st, where a key cyber relationship document, agreed upon during Modi's June trip to Washington, will be signed.

This is the reason why the two sides are trying to organise a meeting in China so that Obama and Modi get a chance to review measures that they have initiated to strengthen the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/PM-Narendra-Modi-calls-for-stronger-US-India-security-relationship/articleshow/52662476.cms">bilateral ties </a>between India and US since mid-2014. 
 
Since becoming the PM of India, Modi has travelled to the US four times, and also welcomed Obama for India's Republic Day celebrations last year. Other than these meetings, both of them have met a number of times for various events.
