Make no mistake — the United States and its allies are more consequential for India's future than its relationship with Russia," Shinde wrote.India needs to leverage its historical ties with Russia to secure its economy and security, so Modi isn't just in Russia for a goodwill trip.<h2 id="c79db6fd-b57b-4ff5-8f16-bc16c77b8021">Reducing the trade imbalance</h2>A key agenda item for the visit is to reduce a huge bilateral trade imbalance, Kwatra said.India imports about $60 billion of goods a year from Russia, but Russia buys less than 10% of this amount from India, Bloomberg reported.Modi may also touch on China's activities in the Indo-Pacific region, Kwatra added.India is trying to manage its relationship with China, which has been testy since a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-china-border-clashes-could-cause-more-indian-ocean-activity-2020-7">border dispute in 2020</a>. But the work starts there, as he'll have to navigate thorny issues such as youth unemployment, income inequality, and reliance on sanctioned Russian oil.<h2>Fueling growth and shaking hands</h2>India's economy has more than doubled in size during Modi's decade in charge to more than $3.7 trillion last year.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/04/29/asias-growth-and-inflation-outlook-improves-but-risks-remain">recently upgraded</a> its growth forecast for real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to a robust 7.8% this year, 6.8% in 2025, and 6.5% in 2026.India has already overtaken Britain to become the world's fifth-largest economy. It's on track to leapfrog Japan and Germany into third spot behind the US and China by 2027.The country's flagship stock index has also tripled in value since Modi took office in May 2014, thanks to wealth gains and growing investment appetites.Moreover, <a target="_blank" href="https://sbi.co.in/documents/13958/36530824/270224-HCES_Feb24.pdf">one estimate</a> puts the percentage of the Indian population living on less than $2.15 a day at below 5%, down from 12% in 2011. He's likely to be seeking to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in India — and to capitalize on bosses' <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-china-relations-reshoring-manufacturing-jobs-made-in-america-2023-10">desire to hedge their bets on China</a> given its strained relationship with the US, economic woes, and how disruptive its strict pandemic lockdowns were to global supply chains."India's population and economic growth numbers are causing a lot of global executives to revisit their India presence and consider scaling up," Richard Rossow, a senior advisor and chair in US-India Policy Studies at the Center for Strategic &amp; International Studies, told Business Insider."Paired with increased concerns about supply chain resilience and security concerns about China, it's a very good time for a hard push to win investments."The United Nations said that India and China both had a population of 1.426 billion in April last year, meaning India is probably now the most populous given its rising birth rate.<h2>Change for the better — mostly</h2>Modi has instigated a raft of major economic reforms since taking office, intended to make India more business-friendly, and boost government revenues by taxing more of the country's vast informal economy.He rolled out a tax on goods and services, simplified bankruptcy laws, lifted FDI restrictions, cut corporate income tax, and ended retrospective taxation.However, not all of Modi's moves spurred growth."Demonetisation was a key economic policy which had negative effects on the economy," Kunal Sen, a director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics, told BI.Sen is the author of several books about India's economy and a professor of development economics at the University of Manchester.He was referring to Modi's sudden declaration in November 2016 that all 500 and 1,000-rupee bills — 86% of Indian currency in circulation — would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-ending-500-and-1000-rupee-bills-to-fight-corruption-2016-11">no longer be accepted as legal tender</a>.The government's goals were to capture undeclared income, get rid of counterfeit currency, broaden the tax base, and bring more activities into the formal economy."The other key economic policy was JAM — the trinity of bank accounts for the poor, mobile numbers and a biometric card. This last economic policy has been revolutionary," Sen said.He was hailing a broader digitization drive under Modi that has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/how-indias-digital-payments-ecosystem-has-evolved-in-the-last-one-year/slidelist/90595832.cms">transformed</a> how Indians bank, invest, pay their taxes, and conduct business.<h2>Prosperity for all</h2>Modi's efforts have helped to usher in a more prosperous era for some Indians, but many have been left behind.Young people are India's beating heart, with about half its population under 25 and almost two-thirds under 35. Matching those hundreds of millions of people with jobs has proven a challenge, with youth unemployment almost tripling from below 6% in 2000 to about 18% in 2019. During that period, the US and Europe slapped sanctions on Russian oil to defund Putin's military machine and punish Moscow for attacking a sovereign nation.Despite that, India purchased an estimated $37 billion of Moscow's oil in 2023 — 13 times the amount it bought annually prior to the conflict. Noting that tension at the border with China has caused "abnormality" in New Delhi-Beijing relations, he said India's thinking is absolutely clear that unless there is peace and stability in the border areas, the ties between the two Asian powers will not improve. "If we have to compete with China, which we should, then its solution is that we should focus on manufacturing here. Our approach towards manufacturing has changed after Modiji came to power. Before that, people did not give much emphasis on manufacturing," <keyword id="19920247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaishankar" source="keywords">Jaishankar</keyword> said during his interaction with industry leaders at a programme in Surat on Monday. There is no other way to counter China on the economic front, insisted the career diplomat-turned-politician while replying to questions from audience members on how he saw India's relationship with the world's second largest economy as it moves towards becoming a USD 5 trillion economy. Jaishankar was speaking at a corporate summit on "Bharat's Economic Rising," organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). "If we talk of rising Bharat, it will rise through technology. You cannot build strong technology on weak manufacturing. At any cost, we should put special emphasis on manufacturing, because that is the only economic response," the Union minister maintained. Jaishankar, a former ambassador to China, emphasised that tension at the border has affected Sino-Indian ties. "As you know, there is tension at the border (with China). And this has caused abnormality in our relations. For that our thinking is very clear that unless there is peace and stability at the border, the relations will remain in the same deteriorated condition," he said. Asked about relationship with Pakistan which remains strained and New Delhi's fight against terrorism sponsored from across the border, Jaishankar asserted India should never compromise on terrorism. "For us to tolerate, justify (terrorism) -- are all wrong. The only response to terrorism is counter-terrorism. And they should understand this to make it a deterrent," he added. Asked about the future of the <keyword id="20139090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-trade-organisation" source="keywords">World Trade Organisation</keyword> amid China dumping goods in India through dubious methods and advanced countries using the WTO to their own convenience, the minister said while it has its own set of challenges, New Delhi should never leave the global forum. "It (WTO) is a formal and accepted forum for talks. Here we would put forward our point, work with allies to save our interest. We recently held a meeting on fishing. We should also explore arrangements at bilateral and group levels," he noted. In his speech at the corporate summit, Jaishankar emphasised that reforms carried out by the government and policies framed to counter COVID-19 have helped India emerge from the pandemic and strengthen its economic position to such an extent that today "we are the fastest growing large economy". "This is one reason why global perception about India has changed," he said. Given India's leadership role, vision, stability, confidence and foreign investment figures, the world wants to collaborate with "us in our journey", the external affairs minister said. "This is a very auspicious occasion for us to engage with the world in different ways in different spheres. This is the India of Chandrayaan and UPI, 5G stack and Covaxin which is respected by the world, and where the Modi government will ensure the safety of its people in any corner of the world. We have done this during the COVID-19 pandemic, in Ukraine, Sudan, and Israel," he noted. There is no doubt that India is rising, and now it is up to "us to see how we connect ourselves with the world and use opportunities and challenges thrown by it," Jaishankar said. "I want to assure you that the world's idea about India has changed a lot," the former IFS officer added. In the last 10 years, the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) thinking about India has changed. The UAE has entered into a free trade agreement with India and trade volume between the two countries has now reached the USD 80 billion-mark, Jaishankar pointed out. The scenario changed after PM Modi's UAE visit in 2015, which was the first trip to the Gulf country by an Indian prime minister after <keyword id="19913949" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indira-gandhi" source="keywords">Indira Gandhi</keyword> went there in 1981, he said. When the US thinks of technology, it establishes a connection with India, he said and cited a roundtable on the issue organised at the White House during PM Modi's visit to buttress his point. An agreement for an economic corridor between India and Europe through Saudi Arabia and the UAE reached during G-20 meet last year and collaboration with the western world on emerging technologies such as semiconductors and drones have put the country in a unique position, he said. These countries think "that India is a unique, non-replaceable partner and (hence they) want to work with India at any cost," Jaishankar added. "Many countries want to enter into an FTA with India. Many of our negotiations are underway, but we believe we will only enter into such FTAs when benefits for us are clear and we are not hurt by opening doors for dumping," the minister said. Indian doctors and engineers are in great demand across the world, and the country wants to protect the interest of its people going abroad and ensure they are given equal treatment, he said. "For this, we enter into a mobility agreement with different countries. In the last two years, we have entered into mobility agreements with Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Australia. For us opportunities exist even outside the country, and they can come in different forms," Jaishankar said.

After being in flight bound to Washington for nearly eight hours, he checked into the Willard Continental Hotel with his team, where he had 17 engagements over the next two days.  After the US, he will visit <keyword id="3746" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword> at the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto.

No other Indian carrier flies to China," said a senior government official. While China has been asking for enhanced bilaterals, the <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> government's stand has been that they will be hiked when India carriers utilise 80% of the rights given to them bilaterally. 
 Hong Kong-based Cathay <keyword id="54594" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pacific">Pacific</keyword> and <keyword id="3227877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cathay-Dragon">Cathay Dragon</keyword> have 48 weekly flights to six Indian cities. While <keyword id="6504436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="HK">HK</keyword> is now part of China, Cathay continues to enjoy its flying rights under bilaterals that India had with <keyword id="379203" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hong-King">Hong King</keyword> when it was under British rule. 
 Among mainland Chinese carriers that operate to India, China Southern has the maximum number of flights with a twice-daily on the <keyword id="3995962" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-guangzhou">Delhi-Guangzhou</keyword> (its hub) route, with both flights on the wide body <keyword id="6356166" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbus">Airbus</keyword> A-330 aircraft. Chengming Yan, China Southern head in Delhi, said: "Almost 60-70% of our flyers from India take connections via <keyword id="106384" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guangzhou">Guangzhou</keyword> to US, Australia and New Zealand. We have a great network from our hub to those places. Indian flyers do not need to wait for more than two hours for their connections."

In his second high-profile <keyword id="427136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-trip">US trip</keyword>, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on day 1 met America’s top business leaders, pitching India as an attractive investment destination. 	He is also slated to attend the United Nations General Assembly session in New York before leaving for West Coast. PM Modi is also slated to meet the US President Barack Obama during his six-day stay in the country. 
	 Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s itinerary also includes visiting the Silicon Valley and meeting the chiefs of some of world’s largest tech companies which includes <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>. PM Modi will also address Indian start-ups at India-US Start-up Konnect. On September 27, the Indian Prime Minister will engage with the Indian community at SAP Centre.
