It has been edited for length and clarity.I can't talk too much about it, but I was a special agent with the FBI.As a member of Special Operations Group 13, I was exposed to a wide range of humanity's worst — from organized crime and terrorist activity to financial abuse and online death threats.After I left the FBI, I became the global CEO of a cybersecurity firm, where I ran everything from digital forensic investigations to penetration testing.The problem with staying safe on the internet nowadays is that the horse is out of the barn. But there are still things you can do.Here are five simple things to bear in mind on the internet:<h2 id="66b0c235-2235-478c-bdd0-056dacd9b5d0">Always be suspicious</h2>If you receive a video, phone call, voicemail, email, or direct message, try to confirm independently with the sender that it's real.If you don't recognize the number on a phone call, but it sounds like the person, put them on hold and independently verify it.Someone once tried to execute a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hacker-online-scams-getting-worse-ai-cybersecurity-expert-2024-9">deepfake call</a> on my mother. They sounded like my eldest daughter. My mom was 80 years old then, but the good news is that multiple people in her family were FBI agents or detectives, so she was immediately suspicious.She called me to check, and my daughter was with me, so she knew it was fake. Other people have not been that careful in the past.<h2 id="32b738df-1457-478e-b66d-725359185f66">Listen to your phone</h2>You know how your phone sometimes tells you your passwords have been compromised in a data leak? Some people just ignore that, which is astonishing to me.My father was the former CEO of MasterCard and a former FBI agent himself, but he still ended up having a significant amount of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-avoid-online-scam-ex-mastercard-exec-2024-9">money removed from his checking account</a> due to compromised credentials that he did not reset.Check the list of apps that have compromised passwords — you might be surprised at how many websites you have a password for in the first place — and go into the apps and change your passwords, at least for the important ones.Don't use the same password for absolutely everything. You don't need to have 150 passwords for 150 websites — but spread them out.I know it's a pain, but you are better safe than sorry.<h2 id="839fa3ab-b7e4-4211-b803-7ad79d39b394">Free WiFi is a risk</h2>If you are going to be using free WiFi at coffee shops or stations, definitely think about installing a VPN on your phone. It's so easy.And do not make financial transactions on a public WiFi network. You don't know who could have access to that information.<h2 id="75e4280b-83f0-4d43-8c6f-ee90d7127f83">Lock your credit information down</h2>It's easy. Just call the reporting agency (like Experian) and tell them you want to lock your credit bureau. They will develop a passkey for you to unlock it later.My lifelong friend's father had his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-score/how-to-reduce-identity-theft-risk">identity stolen</a> once, and he didn't have his credit bureaus locked down.The criminals used a false identity to purchase real estate in Brooklyn in his name and used the real estate to conduct fraudulent transactions.It was quite a personal and financial disruption in his life.This is something a lot of people don't do, but it's a free procedure that makes you instantly more protected against fraud.<h2 id="83142354-c2c2-4d7c-94f5-e5a3c69a407c">Post intelligently</h2>Whenever you are posting, always assume it could be used in some form against you. Would you still post it?It's one thing to post pictures of you having a good time — you do you — but it's another thing to go and publicly tag every person in the photo.For all the positive things that come from social media, it creates a treasure trove of information for bad actors. You have video, you have pictures, you have associations of friendship. You also have machine learning that can go through all of that at an incredible rate of speed — something that we've never seen before until now.There are service platforms and ransomware on the dark web that accelerate these exploits. That's also how <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-image-generators-used-by-children-to-create-indecent-images-safety-group-2023-11">deepfakes</a> are becoming more and more convincing — they use voice and image models from videos and photos that are out there already.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Police bodycam video shows Derrick Palmer, the vice president of the Amazon Labor Union, admitting to strangling his girlfriend.</li><li>If convicted, he could face the possibility of being barred from serving as a union officer.</li></ul>The second-highest-ranking official in the Amazon Labor Union is facing felony charges over claims that he strangled his girlfriend last year, according to police records and body-cam video obtained by Insider.Derrick Palmer, the union's vice president, was indicted in New Jersey in October on two counts of second-degree aggravated assault, according to previously unreported court documents from Union County Superior Court. The indictment accused him of strangling a domestic partner twice in the same evening in early May 2022.If convicted, Palmer could be barred from union leadership roles under a 1959 federal law that prevents people convicted of certain violent offenses from serving as union officers for up to 13 years, though it's not clear whether that law will apply — or be enforced — in this specific scenario. The charges against Palmer are the latest potentially damaging revelation about the leadership of the Amazon Labor Union, the only union to successfully organize an Amazon facility. The grassroots labor organization won a landmark vote at a Staten Island warehouse last year, vaulting Palmer and union president Chris Smalls to national fame.Their unlikely victory over a company that has spent tens of millions of dollars on union-busting activities landed the "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/02/business/amazon-union-christian-smalls.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two best friends</a>" on <a href="https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2022/6177823/chris-smalls-derrick-palmer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of 2022</a>, with a profile written by Bernie Sanders. But in recent months, cracks have begun to appear in the duo's image.Last month, Insider reported that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chris-smalls-amazon-labor-union-president-fight-leader-2023-4">Smalls had been caught on video fighting an Amazon employee</a> outside the Staten Island warehouse. The video also showed Palmer restraining the employee as Smalls hit him. Smalls was arrested last year on assault allegations unrelated to the fight outside the warehouse and taken to court over some $20,000 in overdue child support, which he eventually paid. Some core union members are questioning Smalls' leadership, saying he seems more focused on fame than a union contract.Insider's reporting also raised questions about how the union spent the more than $400,000 it raised on GoFundMe, more than half of which is not accounted for in the union's required financial disclosures. Smalls previously declined to comment to Insider on the record regarding his arrest and late child support payments, and said his fight outside the warehouse "isn't news for the public."Palmer, who continues to work at Amazon's Staten Island fulfillment center, has a lower profile than Smalls. Palmer did not respond to questions.<h2>Bodycam footage from a late-night domestic disturbance call</h2>At about 1:30 a.m on May 4, 2022, police were called to an apartment complex in Elizabeth, New Jersey where Palmer lived with his girlfriend. Body camera footage obtained by Insider shows four officers entering a unit with broken glass on the floor and overturned furniture. Yelling can be heard in the background.The video shows the officers encountering Palmer and his girlfriend arguing in a bedroom, at which point they separate them. Insider is not naming the woman because she is alleged to be a victim of domestic violence. She did not respond to multiple requests for comment. In the video, Palmer told the officers that his girlfriend pushed him, threw glass items at him, and kicked in the bedroom door during the course of their fight.The woman told the officers that Palmer had repeatedly assaulted her. "He's constantly putting his hands on me, God as my witness," she said. "He grabs my neck sometimes, he pushes me to the fucking wall, I'm not even joking. He punches on me, like, this is not a joke."On that night, she said, Palmer had strangled her for "a good 10 seconds," causing her to wave her arms to indicate that she couldn't breathe. She said she didn't pass out, but later told investigators she felt "dizzy" and "lightheaded."The video shows Palmer acknowledging that he choked and pushed his girlfriend."Did you choke her? Did you push her back?" one officer asked."I did, I'm not gonna lie," Palmer replied. "But it's like yo, why you hitting me? Why you throwing stuff at me?"On the body camera footage, police can be heard saying they didn't see marks on Palmer's girlfriend's neck. Their written report, however, says "red welts" eventually developed on her neck, and police took three photos of the marks. The city of Elizabeth refused to provide the photos to Insider, citing state law barring the release of investigative records.Palmer was arrested shortly thereafter. The video doesn't show him being advised of his right to remain silent, which could render his statements inadmissible. He noted that in 2021, the state <a href="https://www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/562021/20210713a.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made strangulation</a> punishable by up to 10 years in prison."Strangulation has been identified as one of the greatest red flags of future serious harm, up to and including homicide," said Olesnycky, who clarified that he was speaking generally and not about the case against Palmer.<h2>Federal law may prevent Palmer from leading the ALU</h2>Prosecutors have offered Palmer a plea deal, according to court documents. If he accepts prosecutors' bargain, Palmer would plead guilty to third-degree aggravated assault with a domestic violence surcharge, spend up to 364 days in a Union County jail, and agree to attend a diversion program for perpetrators of domestic assault.But the case might not end there for Palmer.A 1959 law, passed amid a backlash to organized labor's rising influence, bars people who have been convicted of a range of criminal offenses from serving as a union officer. Among the criminal convictions that can result in union officers being removed from their roles are "assault which inflicts grievous bodily injury" and "assault with intent to kill."It's not clear whether the initial charges against Palmer or the plea offer meet either of those standards. The Office of Labor-Management Standards, an agency within the Department of Labor, determines whether a criminal conviction meets the standards laid out in the law for the removal of a union officer. That ruling can also be appealed. It is "really rare" for union officers to be removed due to an assault conviction, said John Logan, a professor at San Francisco State University's school of labor and employment studies. Historically, union officers removed under the law have been convicted of fraud, embezzlement, or extortion, Logan said. If Palmer is convicted, and the government deems him ineligible for union leadership, it's not clear who could take his place. Amazon Labor Union's vice president faces criminal charges over allegations he choked his girlfriend

After Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> started showing in the image search results for "<keyword id="2888765" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="top-10-criminals">Top 10 criminals</keyword>, search engine giant <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> apologised for any "confusion or misunderstanding" caused by showing the Indian Prime Minister alongside US mobster Al Capone and other top criminals. 
 
A PTI report revealed that in an email reply to an AFP inquiry, Google said that "These results trouble us and are not reflective of the opinions of Google. Sometimes, the way images are described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries." 
 According to BBC news, “Mr Modi figures prominently in the search alongside images of terrorists, murderers and dictators. Other world leaders on the list include former US president <keyword id="13717" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="george-bush">George Bush</keyword> and Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.” 
 “Other prominent Indians who come up in the search include Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>, lawyer <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword>, fugitive underworld don <keyword id="2888763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim-and-Bollywood">Dawood Ibrahim and Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword> who is serving a jail term in connection with deadly blasts in Mumbai in 1993,” BBC report added. 
 Google had also issued a similar apology last month after it emerged that searches using racist language pinpointed the White House, home of President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword>. 
 
However, It was unclear whether the outcome resulted from a search algorithm being duped or flawed, or was caused by a user taking advantage of crowd-sourced editing capabilities intended to improve maps with local knowledge.

​Embarrassed Google apologises after PM Modi’s image appeared in ‘top 10 criminals’ search result

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider spoke to experts who explained how a war crimes case could be built against <keyword id="11899444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vladimir-putin" source="Orion">Vladimir Putin</keyword>.</li><li>The experts said there were already clear signs of war crimes and crimes against humanity in <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword>.</li></ul>In the two weeks since <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> invaded Ukraine, there have been reports of <a href="https://khpg.org/en/1608810140">schools </a>being hit in missile strikes and <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/03/08/ukraine-russian-assault-kills-fleeing-civilians#">civilians being fired on</a> as they try to flee to safety. These incidents have led many to question whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could be charged with war crimes. Insider spoke to two experts in the field, who explained how such cases are built, the likelihood of Putin being charged, and how charges would impact Putin's life. <h2>Investigations are already underway </h2>Hannah Garry, the director of the University of Southern California's International Human Rights Clinic, and Ernesto Verdeja, an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame, said the <keyword id="13294628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international-criminal-court" source="Orion">International Criminal Court</keyword> is the most likely venue to prosecute Putin for war crimes. In fact, the ICC is already investigating the Ukraine invasion. Normally this would be difficult since neither Ukraine nor Russia are member states of the ICC. But after ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan QC expressed his increasing concern about the situation unfolding in Ukraine, his office received referrals from <a href="https://www.icc-cpi.int/Pages/item.aspx?name=2022-prosecutor-statement-referrals-ukraine">39 member states</a>. Those referrals allow Khan to proceed with an investigation into possible war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. "This is unprecedented. There's never been a coalition of states like this, this large, that have referred something to the prosecutor at the international court," Garry said. <div type="image" title="Kharkiv kindergarten" height="1331" width="2000" msid="90143431" hostid="261"></div>Verdeja says that the ICC also investigates crimes of aggression, which is basically the invading of a sovereign country. He says "anyone watching the news" can see that this crime has been committed, but the ICC can't investigate this because Ukraine and Russia aren't member states. Garry says there may be a way to charge Putin down the road with crimes of aggression in a hybrid court, set up specifically to prosecute crimes tied to the invasion, like the Nuremberg trials for the Nazis. Other options include prosecuting Putin in Ukraine's national court system, or through another country's court system, since some countries — such as The Netherlands — have crimes against aggression outlawed, Garry said. Cases related to the conflict in Syria, for example, have been tried in Germany. And on Tuesday Germany's justice minister announced that the country's federal prosecution office had launched a probe into suspected war crimes in Ukraine, according to <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/3/8/germany-launches-probe-into-suspected-war-crimes-in-ukraine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Al Jazeera.</a><h2>Are war crimes being committed in Ukraine? </h2>Verdeja and Garry were in agreement that there are already clear-cut signs that war crimes and crimes against humanity are being committed in Ukraine. "Under the laws of war, you have to use precision weaponry and you're not allowed to directly target civilians. Of course, there will be civilian casualties, that's not a war crime. But here the methods being used and the weapons being used seem to indicate direct intent to target civilians and destroy civilian property and infrastructure," Garry said. Some of the examples Garry and Verdeja listed as possible crimes include reports of the Russian military using <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-is-cluster-bombing-ukraine-as-invasion-intensifies-nato-2022-3">cluster bombs</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-vacuum-bombs-russia-accused-of-using-in-ukraine-work-2022-3">thermobaric bombs</a>; the targeting of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cbs-reporter-in-ukraine-forced-to-flee-after-russian-attack-near-kyiv-2022-3">hospitals</a> and <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/video/20220306-war-in-ukraine-school-bombed-by-russian-army">schools</a>; allegations of <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/invading-russian-soldiers-are-raping-women-in-ukraine-foreign-minister-warns-130724653.html">soldiers sexually assaulting women</a>; and <a href="https://www.un.org/press/en/2022/sc14823.doc.htm">civilians being killed as they tried to flee the encroaching Russian army. </a>Verdeja said war crimes can also have some overlap with crimes against humanity, but the latter can happen in non-war times as well. Warning: Graphic image<div type="image" title="Irpin Ukraine dead bodies" height="1333" width="2000" msid="90143436" hostid="261"></div>Genocide is a "little trickier" to prove, Verdeja said. Garry agreed, saying there's a "very high threshold" for proving genocide. "The prosecutor has to show that Putin or other high-level Russian officials have the intent to destroy a whole group, a particular protected group in whole or in part. And it has to be a national, racial, ethnic, or religious group," Garry said.However, Garry and Verdeja say prosecutors may have a case to build for genocide given Putin's statements before the invasion, in which he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-denies-reviving-russian-empire-says-ukraine-not-real-country-2022-2">questioned the validity of the Ukrainian state</a>. However, Verdeja noted that it's "important not to get too caught up" with whether prosecutors will be able to prove genocide, since war crimes and crimes against humanity are considered "equally atrocious crimes under international human rights law." <h2>The TikTok War</h2>Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been called "The TikTok War" for the way its been documented on social media in real time. Garry and Verdeja agreed that these firsthand accounts could help prosecutors build a case against Putin, but that they also prove a challenge to authenticate. Garry said there are already groups working to provide training to civilians on the ground so that they can collect evidence that could be used to prosecute war crimes down the road. Another issue with all of the videos and photos coming out of Ukraine is disinformation and misinformation. "We see a lot of examples already of imagery and video clips that either didn't happen in the location or at the time they were alleged to have happened. They happened in other countries, at other periods of time. Or that they've been manipulated in some way and sifting through that is really hard," Verdeja said."So it can be a boon, but it can also be a major challenge."Already, building a war crimes case is a process that can take several years, Verdeja said. "The office of the prosecutor is looking for documentary evidence for proof of intentionality and orders and organizational plans to carry out atrocities. They have to look at structures of command ... They have to do interviews with survivors and victims. People who have been displaced and others who have expert knowledge on the case. Often you're doing forensic evidence in the field. You're looking at actual sites where mass atrocities occurred. So you're looking at burial locations, destroyed buildings, all these things," Verdeja said. <h2>How likely is Putin to be charged? </h2>Putin is likely to be a focus of these investigations, Garry said, because the ICC "typically is focused on the highest-level leaders of governments and militaries." However, the challenge for prosecutors will be proving the chain of command that leads from an atrocity being committed, all the way up to Putin. "It's typically not hard to show that on the ground war crimes are happening. What's hard to show is how the high-level leader is connected to it through some theory of responsibility," Garry said. <div type="image" title="Putin genocide sign" height="1333" width="2000" msid="90143439" hostid="261"></div>Modern day military leaders have also learned from past conflicts and know how to make their role in the chain of command opaque, Garry said. Nevertheless, Verdeja says that he thinks there's a "decent chance" Putin could be charged with war crimes. Garry pointed to the fact that Putin has been outspoken about his motivations for invading Ukraine and that could be something prosecutors use against him. An advantage of charging Putin in the ICC is also that heads of state don't get immunity, like they do in other courts. So Putin can still be charged even if he does remain in power. <h2>What would happen if Putin is charged? </h2>Even if Putin is charged by the ICC, Verdeja said it's "pretty unlikely" he'd ever face trial on those charges. Garry and Verdeja said Putin would likely be forced to hole up in Russia, or only visit friendly countries where he is unlikely to be arrested. But another advantage of the ICC is that there are no statute of limitations and his arrest warrant wouldn't expire, Garry said. "What we have seen over time is that as political leaders like Putin lose allies, lose friends, lose power, eventually they do get arrested," Garry said. Both Garry and Verdeja pointed to Slobodan Milošević, the former president of Serbia and Yugoslavia, who was tried for war crimes in connection to the Bosnian War. The trial ended without a verdict when Milošević, died in his prison cell in The Hague after suffering a heart attack. Verdeja says Putin may see getting charged as a positive. "I think he would use it more as proof that the West is against him," Verdeja said.In the unlikely situation in which Putin does eventually get charged and convicted by the ICC, Garry said he could face up to life in prison, but that the court typically hands down sentences of up to 30 years. That sentence would be served in a prison of a member state. Verdeja thinks it's likelier that Putin will die before ever facing justice for war crimes. "Ether someone kills him or he just dies of natural causes," Verdeja said. <h2>Will the investigation impact his decision making? </h2>Garry and Verdeja were in somewhat disagreement over whether a war crimes investigation would have any impact on Putin's decision making in the coming days. Garry said there's a reason that these investigations are started in the middle of armed conflict. "Hopefully this will put pressure on Russia and Putin to withdraw," she said. But Verdeja said he doesn't think the ICC's investigation is something Putin is thinking about at all. "I don't think Putin cares at all about the ICC. He's simply too powerful, too rich, and just doesn't care. So I don't think it'll affect him at all at this point," Verdeja said.

Experts say there's clear cut evidence of war crimes in Ukraine, but building a case against Putin will take years and it's unlikely he'll ever face justice

An <keyword id="321107" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Allahabad-court">Allahabad court</keyword> has issued legal notice to global search engine company <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, its CEO and its India head for listing Indian PM Narendra Modi among the top 10 criminals in the world. 
 
Not only this, the court has also directed for registering a criminal complaint case against the search engine and its top officials. The case would have its next hearing on 31st August. 
 
As per <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Google-lists-PM-Modi-in-top-criminals-gets-court-notice/articleshow/53292860.cms?utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=TOI">TNN</a> reports, a complaint was filed by advocate Sushil Kumar Mishra on which this action was taken. The complainant said that when "top ten criminals of the world" is searched in Google, it comes up with the photograph of India’s Prime Minister Modi. As per Gupta, he had already written to Google asking it to remove Modi's name but was not given any response, because of which he filed an application before the chief judicial magistrate last year. However, even there his plea got dismissed, with the court calling it a civil case. 
 
Gupta then filed a revision application in court challenging this judgement, after which it was passed.

Warning against the vulnerabilities of the high-speed 5G telecom network, papers submitted at a key security meet have noted that it can provide an excellent platform for middlemen and agents for creating linkages for crimes such as drug trafficking, human and organ trafficking, money laundering and terror financing. The papers, written by some Indian Police Service officers, were submitted at the just-concluded conference of director generals of police (DGPs) and inspector general of police (IGPs), attended by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>. The papers noted that the 5G network is built on easily accessible and open Internet protocols and it inherits all the vulnerabilities of previous generations which make it vulnerable to cyber-attacks and compromise the security of the entire system. The <keyword id="48959" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ips" source="Orion">IPS</keyword> officers who wrote the papers suggested that a reserved 5G bandwidth and highly secured equipment should be developed proactively for sensitive government-related communications and for military usage and only approved and authenticated firms with the least cyber risk or with maximum safety protocols should be allowed to work in for the government agencies. "With cryptocurrencies and decentralised banking systems gaining further popularity using the real-time 5G networks, the linkages and financial trail will be challenging to trace. "The 5G can provide an excellent platform for the middlemen and agents for creating linkages for crimes like drug trafficking, human and organ trafficking, money laundering, terror financing, etc.," the papers said. Apart from the prime minister, the three-day annual conference was attended by Union Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amit-shah" source="Orion">Amit Shah</keyword>, National Security Adviser <keyword id="115253" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ajit-doval" source="Orion">Ajit Doval</keyword> and about 350 top police officers of the country last weekend. The 5G network core is built on easily accessible and open Internet protocols such as HTTP and Transport Layer Security (TLS). In a Network-Slicing environment, different sub-networks will have different natures of cyber security. Keys for radio interface encryption are delivered across unsecured routes. Vulnerabilities such as IDOR (Insecure Direct Object Reference) could arise. "The Telco cloud is vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which can compromise the security of the network and the data stored in the cloud," the papers said. Due to network function virtualisation (NFV), criminals can employ or execute attacks to access and even alter telephone numbers (target lists) to be monitored. There are several improvements in 5G that support such remote control functions like drones, robotic surgery, etc. but criminals can exploit this aspect too. Another issue in 5G is the operations of edge computing where processing is done at decentralised inter-communicating nodes close to the user network. This furthers the problem of data collection for security establishments as there is no central node through which data passes. The papers said the 5G can support millions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Internet of Things (<keyword id="12307304" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iots" source="Orion">IoTs</keyword>) and devices per square kilometer thus resulting in a massive increase in attack surface for cybercriminals. Cyber crimes like mobile network mapping, distributed denial of service, draining battery, service degradation, mobile IMSI capture, malware injection, CnC creation, intercepting communication, DNS spoofing, uplink, and downlink impersonations, etc. may be easier to carry out, the papers said. "During the initial transition phase, future 5G networks will inherit all the vulnerabilities of previous generations." There is a chance that end-to-end encryption (E2ER) will be included in the standard during the upcoming standardisation process, which is a challenge for law enforcement agencies. The IPS officers wrote that the 5G equipment manufacturers would try to sell the valuable data to the marketers for targeted advertising and this should be monitored to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Holistic cyber security is the only solution to this new 5 G-created ecosystem. Starting from core devices to network layers IoTs and user's mobile or appliances, everything should be seen as a potential attack point. Suggesting safeguards, the IPS officers noted that consumer education on IoT security is necessary and equipment should be purchased from trusted sources and not from suspicious sources like China. "The mobile operators need to adopt a hybrid cloud-based approach where sensitive data is stored locally and less sensitive data stored in the cloud. There is a need for network operators to be alert to the need for resilience of their infrastructure to power outages, natural disasters, misconfiguration etc.," the papers said. This would be necessary for putting the rioters on the no-fly list as domestic terrorists. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)" height="3060" width="4080" msid="80260603" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://www.tsa.gov/travel/passenger-support/travel-redress-program">According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA),</a> which has authority over US <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> security, the no-fly list "is a small subset of the US government Terrorist Screening Database (also known as the terrorist watchlist) that contains the identity information of known or suspected terrorists."The list, along with the <keyword id="62795" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="TSA">TSA</keyword> as a whole, was launched in response to the 9/11 attacks in 2001.The list is maintained by the FBI's Terrorist Screening Center, but used by the TSA as part of its <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening">Secure Flight program</a>, which allows the TSA to prevent those it deems high-risk from getting past security.Representatives for the TSA declined to provide further information about the no-fly list but <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/news/press/statements/2021/01/11/statement-regarding-airport-security-following-events-us-capitol">said in a statement</a> that they're on high alert following the events of January 6, and that "TSA prepares for all contingencies, and employs multiple layers of security that are both seen and unseen."The statement also clarifies that their no-fly list screening is just one of many security measures and that it takes place prior to passengers arriving at security checkpoints.<h2>The federal no-fly list is notoriously secretive - and different from airlines' individual no-fly lists</h2><div type="image" title="Checking boarding passes before the flight." height="1512" width="2016" msid="80260604" hostid="261"></div>The government doesn't disclose how many people are on the no-fly list, though <a href="https://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=F02871C5-A023-4DEF-AEC3-EDAF34BEA2BF">a June 2016 statement</a> by Democratic California Senator Dianne Feinstein said that there were around 81,000 people on the no-fly list at the time, with fewer than 1,000 of those people being US citizens.Most US-based airlines have their own, separate list of banned passengers, in addition to the federal no-fly list.Airlines' individual lists basically consist of passengers that have failed to comply with airline policies in some way, from refusing to wear masks to assaulting crew members. We will continue monitoring closely and working with local law enforcement and airport authority partners to ensure the safety of our customers and team members on the ground and in the air."For Capitol rioters to end up on airlines' individual no-fly lists, they would have to fail to comply with airline-specific regulations.<h2>It's not just suspected national security threats who wind up on the federal no-fly list</h2><div type="image" title="tsa" height="1362" width="1816" msid="80260605" hostid="261"></div>Very little is known about who goes on the list and why, as the government doesn't disclose this information. However, <a href="https://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5030&amp;context=ylj=ylj">the Yale Law Journal writes</a> that "public record suggests that it's based on tips collected by confidential sources."<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/terrorist-screening-center-frequently-asked-questions.pdf/view">According to the FBI</a>, those on the list "may present a threat to civil aviation or national security." The FBI further states that to get on the list there must be "credible information demonstrating that the individual presents a threat of committing an act of terrorism with respect to an aircraft, the homeland, US facilities or interests abroad, or is a threat of engaging in or conducting a violent act of terrorism and is operationally capable of doing so."<a href="https://www.hg.org/legal-articles/how-does-the-u-s-no-fly-list-work-31742">HG.org</a>, a website for legal resources pertaining to law and government, says that the list is not just used against domestic terrorism, but also to stop registered sex offenders or those suspected of trafficking illegal drugs from boarding flights.<a href="https://www.cato.org/people/patrick-g-eddington">Patrick G. Eddington</a>, a research fellow in homeland security and civil liberties at the Cato Institute think tank, told Insider that, according to his sources at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), "the criteria is fairly expansive."He said that the only reason the public knows anything at all is because of leaks that have been made to various press organizations over the last several years.Citing <a href="https://theintercept.com/2014/07/23/blacklisted/">a 2013 leak of watchlist guidance</a>, he said getting someone added to the list "doesn't require that you have any kind of concrete facts or irrefutable evidence.""So because the bar is so relatively low to be put on these lists to begin with, anytime you get people like Chuck Schumer and Bennie Thompson making noise about putting literally what could be hundreds or thousands of people on a list, that raises all kinds of alarm bells" he said, calling it "a completely due process-free approach to things."Things may change soon, though, making getting added to the list more difficult.A bill titled "<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/4431">No Fly for Terrorists Act</a>," was introduced to Congress in 2019, which would prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from stopping US citizens or permanent residents from traveling "unless they have been convicted of a federal crime of terrorism."<h2>The federal no-fly list has been heavily criticized in the past</h2><div type="image" title="GettyImages 1286778664" height="1666" width="2223" msid="80260606" hostid="261"></div>The no-fly list has been criticized on the basis of impinging on civil liberties, as well as for its potential for ethnic, religious, economic, political, and racial profiling and discrimination."The No Fly List has been used since its inception to unjustly target Black and Brown people, particularly Muslims, and is a due process nightmare," Manar Waheed, a senior legislative and advocacy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), told Insider.Of the many calls to add Capitol rioters to the list, he said "Doubling down on it now will simply further entrench an error-prone and unconstitutional system that will continue to be used unfairly against people of color."There are currently a number of lawsuits against the government by individuals on the list who claim no affiliation to any terrorist groups, many of which are represented by the ACLU, according to law website <a href="http://hg.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HG.org</a>. However, since the US government can withhold classified information on the grounds of protecting national security, <a href="http://hg.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HG.org</a> says that prosecuting these claims is difficult.There have been some wins for plaintiffs. In 2015 for example, the 9th Circuit ruled that the TSA had to start disclosing whether people were on the list, and summarize why - previously they had to share absolutely no information regarding the no-fly list. However, they must do this without revealing classified information, which the ACLU argues keeps their reasonings too vague.In 2019 however, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the government was not required to give full detailed explanations due to national security concerns, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/b954e754b77c44d8853f3160caac7238" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to the AP.</a>Another issue with the no-fly list is that it's allegedly prone to "false positives," which is when innocent people are added to the list because, for example, their names are similar to those of suspected terrorists. In 2008, it was reported that "one major US airline records 9,000 false-positives a day," <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna25612748">according to an NBC article</a> sourcing then-Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Public figures such as the late Senator Ted Kennedy and former Georgia Representative John Lewis have found themselves on the no-fly list, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2015/12/07/politics/no-fly-mistakes-cat-stevens-ted-kennedy-john-lewis/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to CNN</a>, as well as Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens.<h2>Putting everyone who was on Capitol Hill during the riots on the no-fly list could be a slippery slope</h2><div type="image" title="capitol police" height="1425" width="1900" msid="80260608" hostid="261"></div>Eddington described the calls for adding rioters to the no-fly list "security theater," a term he borrowed from privacy and security expert Bruce Schneier, saying that the FBI acknowledged having over a hundred thousand digital images to sort through and that not everyone on Capitol grounds on January 6 committed a crime.Those who did commit crimes, were identified, and have arrest warrants issued he said are "automatically going to be on the no-fly list," though he worries that this will just spur people to drive next time."Think about what that means for somebody who went to the Capitol, didn't actually engage in the breach, has their photograph swept up in all of this, and then because of this political pressure winds up getting put on the list," he said. "Their ability to get off that list is going to be really difficult because there is no judicial review stuff." Eddington believes that Americans ought to have a legally protected right to sue the TSA, DHS, or FBI should they find themselves on the list without reason.He also believes that the no-fly list is in need of "massive legislative overhaul," saying that the list needs to be based on actual probable cause, and ought to be directly tied to constitutional standards from a legal standpoint."And it's not, that's why this stuff is so troubling," he said.

Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the committee, sent the referral for a criminal investigation "relating to a potential conspiracy to provide materially false statements to Congress and obstruct a congressional committee investigation, three separate crimes, in the course of considering Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.""When a well-meaning citizen comes forward with information relevant to the committee's work, I take it seriously," Grassley said in a statement. "It takes courage to come forward, especially with allegations of sexual misconduct or personal trauma. I'm grateful for those who find that courage. But in the heat of partisan moments, some do try to knowingly mislead the committee.""That's unfair to my colleagues, the nominees and others providing information who are seeking the truth. Senate Judiciary Committee sends criminal referral for Michael Avenatti to Justice Department

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s Lok Sabha constituency <keyword id="6357203" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Varanasi">Varanasi</keyword> today failed to make it to the list of 20 cities selected for the ambitious Smart Cities project. 
 
The historic city of Uttar Pradesh ranked 96 among 97 cities across the country which competed for inclusion in the first list that was announced by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu. 
 
"The (Urban Development) Ministry has no role in the selection. The result is based on a competition," said a senior Urban DUrban Development Ministry official while explaining why Varanasi is not in the list. 
 
Each state was given a quota of nominations on the basis of size, population and the number of notified cities. 
 
Uttar Pradesh had got the maximum quota of 13 cities for nomination but only 12 cities including Jhansi, Moradabad, Saharanpur and Bareli participated in the contest. However, none of them qualified in the first list. 
 
With regard to the 13th city, the remained indecisive the remained indecisive on choosing between Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi's constituency) and Meerut. 
 
Jammu and Kashmir, which had to send name for just one city, did not send any nomination as it did not take a call on whether it should be Srinagar or Jammu. 
 
Altogether 97 cities participated in the competition for the first list. The list was topped by Bhubaneswar while Dehradun was at the bottom. 
The states which have not found a place in the list of first 20 are Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh.
