The 20-year-old freshman has averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds during <keyword id="18877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Michigan">Michigan</keyword>'s Final Four run.
Towards the end of Michigan's blowout over Florida, the game got so out of hand that the CBS announcers brought up this fun fact: Mitch McGary can ride a unicycle.
We did some digging, and it turns out that he's something of a renaissance man.
He can, indeed, ride a unicycle. He <a href="http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/f054966a#/f054966a/8">told M Magazine</a> (an on-campus publication) earlier this year that he has been riding one for about eight years. A few months ago, <a href="http://web.stagram.com/p/340593484940923708_15328539">he posted this photo</a> (presumably from the high school) of him riding one:

In <a href="http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/f054966a#/f054966a/8">that Q&amp;A with M Magazine</a> he also revealed that he wants to be a financial advisor if a career in pro sports doesn't work out.
Perhaps the oddest revelation from that Q&amp;A: He once worked at a fireworks store.
McGary is equally as interesting on the court. His emergence has been the single biggest reason why Michigan has been so good in March. He gives their guard-centric offense a different dimension.
<a href="http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130328/OPINION03/303280351">He suffers from ADHD</a>, and his transition to college hoops was slowed by that disorder, the Detroit News report. But he seems to have it all figured out, and he's peaking at the right time.

Meet Mitch McGary, The Unicycle-Riding Freshman Who's Taking The NCAA Tournament By Storm

<table class="image-container full" width="200"><tr><td><div class="image"></div>Tom Pennington/Getty Images</td></tr></table> As great as <keyword id="18877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Michigan">Michigan</keyword> has played in the last five games, they still have one big weakness that kills them in close games: free throw shooting.
The numbers aren't pretty:
<ul>
<li>They ranked 130th in the country in free throw percentage in the regular season at 70.7%</li>
<li>They've been even worse in the tournament, shooting 64.3%</li>
<li>They were 4/9 on free throws in the final 69 seconds of their near-collapse against Syracuse</li>
<li>Center Mitch McGary is just 6/16 on free throws in the tournament</li>
</ul>
That last point is the most important.
McGary didn't play all the much in the regular season, but he has emerged as Michigan's second most important player in the tournament. The ball is in his hands a lot, and unfortunately for Michigan, that means there are all sorts of opportunities to put him on the line, where he's a 44% free-throw shooter.
As Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons mentioned in passing on their podcast last night, it's only a matter of time before a team resorts to a Hack-A-McGary strategy. 
If tonight's national championship game comes down to the final minutes, Louisville is going to foul McGary and make him beat them from the free-throw line. And if it becomes a free-throw shooting contest, Michigan is at a severe disadvantage.
We've already seen Michigan nearly let a game slip through its fingers because of wobbly free throw shooting. On Saturday against Syracuse, Michigan had two different chances to ice the game in the final 48 seconds, but blew them both.
They might not be so lucky tonight.

The One Big Weakness That Could Doom Michigan Tonight

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div></div>All things considered, the Minnesota Timberwolves did very well in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kevin-love-trade-makes-cavaliers-unguardable-2014-8">the Kevin Love trade</a>.
In the trade, which can't be completed until August 23rd, Cleveland will reportedly send Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, and a 2015 1st-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Love.
The truth about these sorts of trades - where a superstar forces his way to a contender under threat of leaving in free agency at the end of the year - is that the team that trades the superstar usually loses.
More than any other professional sports league, success in the NBA is driven by stars. When you give up a top-15 player, it's rare that a combination of role players, young guys, and future draft picks can replace his impact.
When you look at comparable trades, you see that Minnesota's haul is pretty good. Over the last four years five elite NBA players have been traded: Kevin Love, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Carmelo Anthony.
The Howard and Anthony trades involved multiple teams and multiple players going a bunch of different directions, so for the sake of simplicity we'll only look at examples in which a superstar changed hands in a trade between two teams (namely, the Harden, Paul, and Williams trades).
Here's what the Oklahoma City Thunder got for James Harden (players in bold still with the team):

None of those guys in bold have made an All-Star team, let alone filled the void left by franchise-changing players. In each example, teams traded a top-15 and got a handful of spare parts in return.
The thing that makes the Kevin Love trade so good for Minnesota is that they got one player in Andrew Wiggins who has a plausible chance to be an All-Star, and another player in Anthony Bennett who was a No. 1 pick just 14 months ago <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-bennett-lost-weight-2014-7">and is skinny now</a>.
If Wiggins pans out, the Timberwolves would have gotten more for Love than any other those other teams got for their respective top players.
The Timberwolves had to trade love. They couldn't risk him trudging through another 39-win season and leaving in free agency next summer for nothing. In a bit of good fortune, they were able to create something of a bidding war for Love - with Cleveland initially reluctant to include Wiggins in the trade and the Golden State reluctant to include Klay Thompson. When the Cavaliers finally blinked and put Wiggins on the table, the Timberwolves were smart to take the offer.
