<p>The U.S. trailed Australia by a full body length when Franklin entered the pull at the start of his anchor leg (see video below). But by the time the two swimmers reached the wall at the end of their first 50 meters, Franklin had already caught up to Alicia Coutts and eventually cruised to an easy win.</p>
<p>No woman has ever won more than five gold medals or more than six medals overall at the World Championships. She was originally entered in eight events trying to equal Michael Phelps record of eight gold medals, but eventually cut back to seven events.</p>

Missy Franklin Is 4-For-4 In Her Quest To Win 7 Gold Medals At The World Championships

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dominant <keyword id="12411208" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="university-of-pennsylvania" source="Orion">University of Pennsylvania</keyword> swimmer <keyword id="12989845" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lia-thomas" source="Orion">Lia Thomas</keyword> wants to compete beyond college.</li><li>The trans athlete at the center of a media firestorm is eyeing the <keyword id="11896183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics" source="Orion">Olympics</keyword> after she graduates.</li></ul><p>Lia Thomas — the University of Pennsylvania swimmer at the center of the debate over transgender inclusion in <keyword id="11896034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="womens-sports" source="Orion">women's sports</keyword> — has higher aspirations once she's exhausted her NCAA eligibility.</p><p>She's even got her eyes on the Olympics.</p><p>In an exclusive interview with Robert Sanchez for <a href="https://www.si.com/college/2022/03/03/lia-thomas-penn-swimmer-transgender-woman-daily-cover">a feature in Sports Illustrated</a>, Thomas expressed her desire to compete beyond college and potentially book her ticket to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. And according to Sanchez, <keyword id="13310235" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="usa-swimming" source="Orion">USA Swimming</keyword> officials "have no issue with Thomas representing the United States" on the Olympic stage so long as she "meets the criteria to continue swimming in the women's category."</p><div type="image" title="Lia Thomas." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90001664" hostid="261"></div><p>But plenty of people — from casual swimming fans to <a href="https://www.insider.com/michael-phelps-trans-athletes-womens-sports-doping-comparison-2022-1">the biggest names in the sport</a> — would likely take issue with Thomas' participation.</p><p>The Penn senior, who recently punched her ticket to the upcoming NCAA Swimming &amp; Diving Championships, has faced intense media scrutiny based on her gender. Thomas competed for the Quakers' men's team for her first three years of college before starting hormone therapy and rejoining the team on the women's side a year later.</p><p>Since then, she's found incredible success in the pool. Thomas became the 2022 <keyword id="11956250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ivy-league" source="Orion">Ivy League</keyword> champion in the 100-, 200-, and 500-meter freestyle events, then led Penn's quartet to the school's first-ever victory in the women's 400-meter relay. </p><div type="image" title="Lia Thomas, a transgender woman, swims for the University of Pennsylvania at an Ivy League swim meet against Harvard University in Cambridge" height="1333" width="2000" msid="90001665" hostid="261"></div><p>Now that she's headed to the NCAA Championships in Georgia, Thomas has "an outside chance to break longstanding collegiate records held by Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin," Sanchez writes. Should she compete in Paris in 2024, she could have a shot at challenging the former's Olympic records as her counterpart on Team USA.</p><p>Thomas fully intends to continue training after she graduates from Penn. She's already applied to law school, where she hopes to jump-start a career in civil rights law whether or not she realizes her Olympic dreams. She wants to advocate for people like herself, Sanchez writes.</p><p>"I just want to show trans kids and younger trans athletes that they're not alone," Thomas told Sanchez. "They don't have to choose between who they are and the sport they love."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Most viewers watching the Olympics on NBC on Saturday night assumed that the events being shown were live.</strong></li><li><strong>It turned out the men's slopestyle event was on a 30-minute tape-delay.</strong></li><li><strong>The USOC congratulated American Red Gerard for winning the first gold of the Olympics for the US, about 15 minutes before his final run and about 30 minutes before the event was over.</strong></li><li><strong>Despite the significant tape-delay, NBC still was unable to sensor multiple bad words that were clearly audible during Gerard's celebration.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Another American gold medal performance being shown in primetime on NBC was spoiled for viewers who were also paying attention to social media.</br></p><p>It turned out that the men's slopestyle event that most viewers assumed was being shown live, was actually on tape-delay of about 30 minutes.</p><p>NBC was showing Gerard's second of three runs when the US Olympic Committee congratulated him for winning the first gold of the Olympics for the US.</p><p>That tweet, as well as other social media posts, came about 15 minutes before NBC aired Gerard's final run and about 30 minutes before NBC showed the end of the event and Gerard finding out he had won.</p><p>To make matters worse for NBC, despite the significant tape-delay, several bad words were clearly audible during Gerard's celebration, forcing NBC host Mike Tirico to apologize on air.</p><p>"Apologies for the language," Tirico said when the broadcast went back to the studio. "You understand the enthusiasm involved there."</p><p>This was not the first time an American gold medal performance on NBC was spoiled.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In 2012, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-nbc-spoiled-missy-franklins-tape-delayed-gold-medal-2012-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC famously spoiled their own broadcast of Missy Franklin's gold medal performance at the London Olympics</a>. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span>Francesca Belibi is a 15-year-old sophomore at Regis Jesuit in Aurora, Colorado, and on Friday she became the first girl to dunk in a Colorado high school basketball game.</span></p><p><span>While the 6-foot-1&#xa0;Belibi made Colorado history with the dunk, the most amazing part is just how easy she made it look. &#xa0;</span><span>Belibi stole the ball at mid-court, dribbled straight to the basket and threw down a one-handed slam, even snapping the rim.</span></p><p><span>Here is the video, <a href="http://www.hudl.com/video/3/7094262/58705ee1da5b3d0ae4ecafc2" target="_blank">via Hudl</a>:</span></p><p>"I didn't expect it to be honest with you," <a href="http://www.aurorasentinel.com/sports/preps/girls-basketball/girls-basketball-regis-jesuits-francesca-belibi-first-girl-dunk-colorado/" target="_blank">Belibi told the Aurora Sentinel after the game</a>. "I don't know, I just did it. I didn't realize it went in until I heard the crowd and heard the snap (of the rim). Then I definitely heard my teammates. I think the crowd definitely understands the importance behind it - the first girl to dunk - but it was completely unexpected."</p><p><span>Regis Jesuit went on to win the game 78-23.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Regis Jesuit is no stranger to talented female athletes. <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/2016/01/16/francesca-belibi-of-regis-jesuit-may-be-first-girl-to-dunk-in-colorado-high-school-game/" target="_blank">According to the Denver Post</a>, 32 of their players have gone on to play college basketball in the past 12 seasons. In addition, the school also produced Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin.</span></p><p><span>The dunk by Belibi is also not a surprise. 15-year-old high school girl dunked in a game and she made it look it easy

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Although she won five gold medals at the&#xa0;Rio Olympics and has set 13 world records over the course of her swim career, Katie Ledecky is also a 19-year-old Stanford freshman just three meets into her NCAA career.&#xa0;</p><p>As it turns out,&#xa0;collegiate&#xa0;competition is no match&#xa0;for the best swimmer alive.&#xa0;</p><p>Over the weekend, <a href="http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2016/11/14/katie-ledecky-breaks-ncaa-record-1000-yards/">in a duel meet against Texas</a>, Ledecky won the 1,000-meter freestyle by a whopping 34.85 seconds, giving her the NCAA record in the event by more than 10 seconds. By the time Ledecky&#xa0;had 200&#xa0;meters left in the event, she&#xa0;had already lapped every other swimmer in the pool.&#xa0;At least one swimmer was lapped twice.</p><p>Perhaps most shockingly of all, Ledecky's time against Texas (<span>9:10.49) paled in comparison to her own American record&#xa0;in the same event (<span>8:59.65).</span></span><span><span>&#xa0;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Along with her NCAA record in the 1,000, Ledecky&#xa0;has also already set new Stanford records in both the&#xa0;500-meter and 200-meter freestyle events. In other words, every race she has swam so far in college has resulted in a new record.&#xa0;</span></span></p><p>In the 500, her&#xa0;time (<span>4:33.94) is three seconds shy of the current NCAA record (<span>4:30.37), but nowhere near her own American record in the same vent (<span>4:26.58). In the 200, meanwhile, Ledecky's time is five seconds slower than Missy Franklin's NCAA and American record (<span>1:39.10).&#xa0;</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Ledecky currently owns the world record in the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1500-meter freestyle events. Katie Ledecky is already dominating her NCAA competition in jaw-dropping fashion, lapping her competition in a race she won by 35 seconds

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NBC</span></p></div><p></p></div>NBC has received a lot of criticism for opting to only show key events with tape-delayed footage in primetime and it doesn't help when their own corespondents are asked about events they couldn't watch live.</p>
<p>During a regular segment on the "TODAY" show, Matt Lauer's first question for Lindsey Vonn was about the bronze medal-winning performance of American Julia Mancuso in the super combined downhill. This led to an awkward response from Vonn who had not seen the performance from her home in Florida.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Lauer: "Let's start with the women's super combined, it happened today. Julia Mancuso taking bronze in that. What did you think of her performance?"</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Vonn: "Well, obviously I haven't seen it because it's not on NBC, which will be tonight. But I did hear about the results and I heard she had an amazing downhill run and then hung on for the bronze medal.</strong></p>
<p>Vonn's response was said with a smile and was most likely not an intentional jab at her new employers. However, Vonn's response does show how difficult it is for NBC to cover and discuss the same events it refuses to show live.</p>
<p>It is a fine line and occasionally they are going to have screw ups.</p>
<p>The most famous screw up came during the 2012 Summer Olympics when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-nbc-spoiled-missy-franklins-tape-delayed-gold-medal-2012-7">NBC mistakenly aired a promo for the "TODAY" show showing swimmer Missy Franklin celebrating her gold medal</a> just prior to actually airing the gold medal-winning race.</p>

NBC's Tape-Delayed Olympics Coverage Led To Awkward Exchange Between Matt Lauer And Lindsey Vonn

She is <a href="https://news.stanford.edu/2019/02/11/deans-letter-stanford-engineering-community-death-student/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not the first student</a> the university has lost that way this year, but doctors,</span> psychologists, and coaches across the US are worried about the mental health of the nation's young people far beyond the halls of Stanford.</p><p>There's a quiet, deadly, and troubling trend on the rise: more young people of all ages are thinking about suicide, attempting suicide, and dying by suicide.  Even though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-suicide-rate-up-cdc-troubling-trend-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suicide rates are going up</a> in nearly all age groups across the US, the trends that are happening in people under 26 are unique, according to a new <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/abn-abn0000410.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. </p><p>When researchers looked at questionnaire responses to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from over 600,000 teens and adults across the US, they found that rates of major depressive episodes have more than doubled since the mid-2000s, in kids as young as 12 and young adults up to 25.  Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are also going up markedly in young people.  </p><p><span>"These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders," lead study author and psychologist Jean Twenge said <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2019-03/apa-mhi030819.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a press release</a>. "More U.S. adolescents and young adults ... experienced serious psychological distress, major depression or suicidal thoughts, and more attempted suicide."</span></p><p>The trends are not specific to any social group, economic class, sex, or race, but the researchers did see some of the biggest upticks in young women, and people in their young 20s were especially vulnerable. S<span>uicide is now the </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/suicide-rates-climbing-higher-in-the-us-especially-in-middle-age-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second leading cause of death</a><span> for all US teens and young adults from ages 10 to 35, after accidents. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Kelly Catlin with her silver medal women's pursuit cycling teammates at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She was also a fraternal triplet, and is now mourned by her brother Colin and sister Christine. </p><p>Her first bicycling coach, Charlie Townsend of NorthStar Development Cycling in Minnesota, remembers Catlin as a jaw-dropping star cyclist who rose quickly into national and international competitions in less than two years on the team. </p><p>Last winter, Catlin sustained a concussion during training. Her sister Christine told the <a href="http://www.startribune.com/us-olympic-cyclist-catlin-found-dead-in-her-home-at-age-23/506953352/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a> Catlin was having "really bad headaches" and was more sensitive to light after the accident. She attempted suicide once in January, but seemed to be doing better recently.</p><p>Studies show experiencing a <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/fullarticle/2712851" target="_blank" rel="noopener">concussion can increase a person's risk of suicide</a> 2-fold, and while <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30601399" target="_blank" rel="noopener">evidence is still scant</a>, there are also indications that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4996886/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elite athletes are at higher risk for anxiety and depression</a>, which are both <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4771521/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">risk factors</a> for suicide. High-profile <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-phelps-advice-on-mental-health-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">athletes like Michael Phelps</a> and <a href="https://www.cnn.com/videos/sports/2018/03/26/missy-franklin-depression-mental-health-olympics-swimming-laureus-intv-spt.cnn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Missy Franklin</a> have become increasingly open about their own mental health and depression issues.</p><p>"I think she put very, very high expectations on herself," Townsend said of Catlin. "For the most part, she met those expectations."</p><p>He wishes coaches were better at helping young athletes not only achieve success, but also deal with setbacks and defeats: "The suicide really has caused me to do a lot of thinking about what the right way to develop kids is, and what they really need to go forward - not just in cycling - but in the rest of their life."</p><h2>ER doctors are seeing more young kids who've attempted suicide </h2><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-phelps-advice-on-mental-health-2018-9">Athletes </a>are not the only young people at risk. Researchers recently took a look at three different urban emergency rooms across the US, and found that a third of kids from ages 10 to 12 screened positive for suicide risk. </p><p><span>"Typically, suicidal thoughts and behaviors are seen in older teens," study author Lisa Horowitz, a clinical scientist at the National Institute of Mental Health, said <a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-study-shows-many-preteens-screen-positive-suicide-risk-during-er-visits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a release on that study</a>. </span><span>"This study shows that children as young as 10 who show up in the emergency department may be thinking about suicide, and that screening all preteens - regardless of their presenting symptoms - may save lives." </span></p><p>Researchers aren't sure why this is happening, but they think that both more screen time and less sleep may play a role. The two often go hand in hand: studies show that the glowing lights of a phone or TV affect our sleep quality, and there's also plenty of data suggesting people are getting up more often in the middle of the night to check on their buzzing phones. </p><p><span>"Overall, make sure digital media use doesn't interfere with activities more beneficial to mental health such as face-to-face social interaction, exercise and sleep," Twenge said.</span></p><h2>What to do if you're worried someone might be suicidal</h2><p>Depression and mental illness can't be willed away, and it's not a character flaw. Remember that traumatic events that lead to depression can happen to anyone, and more than<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed-4-short-l-words-2018-3">1 in 20 Americans suffer from depression</a><span> </span>on any given day.</p><p>There are several warning signs to keep an eye out for if you're worried that someone close to you may be suicidal.
