On an average, Mission Mangal has 14 shows in each theatre, while Batla House has it in 12. Akshay Kumar, the protagonist of Mission Mangal claimed that the actual Mars mission by ISRO had a budget of ₹450 crore which is lower than ₹500 crore budget of his Robot 2.0 movie. This is how much Big Bollywood producers bet on their big budget movies. And, it is the first weekend collections are extremely key as the days of even a superhit movie running in the theatres for a month are long gone. Now, Reliance Jio is taking away this ‘premium’ too with its ‘First Day First Show’ plan. “The release of a big budget movie is an event which is done on a wide canvas. They will suffer the most while it could be good news for smaller films which can make money by selling digital rights. There could be a standoff,” Bharati Dubey, a film critic told Business Insider India. This, according to Dubey could kickstart a war between Big Bollywood producers who might resist the change. Unlike in Hollywood where Steven Spielberg <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Netflix-responds-to-Steven-Spielbergs-quest-to-boot-it-from-the-Oscars/articleshow/68260584.cms">tried to bar Netflix </a>from entering its original movies for Oscar awards, there has been no animosity between OTT platforms and movie producers here, so far. In fact, Amazon Prime Video is known for bringing many regional films onto its platform within a month of the release. A Telugu movie called Rangasthalam released in 2018, ran<a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/regional-movies/rangasthalam-completes-50-days-at-theatres-emerges-as-one-of-the-biggest-grossers-of-2018/story-HDCixTqGKtd0KQEgW0s2uK.html"> for 50 days in theatres</a> even though it was streaming on the site. But not all movies might be just as lucky. When producers spend ₹30 crores on production which does not include promotions and other costs, they expect returns to the tune of ₹50 crores over the weekend. This is necessary for them to reach the ₹100 crore target in its short lifetime. Few producers can take the chance. Small and independent <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/articles/double-celebration-for-sohum-shah-starrer-tumbbad/20044161">movies like Tumbadd </a>which was a sleeper hit, have little to lose in terms of box office collections. And platforms like Jio etc will the makers reach a wider audience that may not go to the theatres to watch them. However, the big-budget blockbusters need people to throng to the theatres on the opening weekend to recover their investment. Parallel lines cross All was fine until movies had the first weekend premium. In fact, one of India’s successful directors Rohit Shetty said at FICCI Frames this February that the movie industry could co-exist with OTT platforms. “We had this debate even when VHS (tape player) and television came in and when movies were showcases within a few months. I think films and video streaming services like Zee5, Netflix and Hotstar are parallel worlds. Film theatres will not shut down because of them,” Shetty had said But Mukesh Ambani’s plan might change Shetty’s perception. He is offering this service not just as a part of a movie plan, but for those who opt for his premium Jio Fibre broadband service. It means that customers who enjoy high speed connections might get a new movie right onto their screens, without even asking. And that will kill the already dying shelf life of expensive movies made for the ‘big screen’.

It will be a part of the country’s most popular <keyword id="959269" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott-platform">OTT platform</keyword>, Hotstar, which has over 300 million monthly active users. Disney+ and Hotstar are both part of the same parent company, Walt Disney. And they are utilizing the strength of their network. But this new addition to Hotstar will not be easy on the many of its subscribers. As it offers a new range of entire Disney library, Hotstar will increase its annual subscription price to ₹1,499 ($20). This will make Disney+ Hotstar the second most expensive OTT service in India after Netflix to offer a premium subscription at ₹1499. The OTT services also promises to let users view its free content library which includes several movies like Chhichhore, Mission Mangal and soap operas like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata hai. Disney+ was earlier scheduled to launch on March 29. Disney also rolled out a beta app to test the streaming service for select users. But they delayed the launch after health authorities identified clusters of coronavirus in several parts of the country and cancelled the IPL cricket matches. Disney+ Hotstar Premium set to become the second most expensive OTT subscription in India

<ul><li><keyword id="2739840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword>, India’s largest OTT player, is wooing India by giving what it loves the most: free content. </li><li>The OTT platform announced that it will provide high quality content to its Hindi audience without any charge. </li><li>With the new campaign ‘Hotstar ka vaada, free entertainment sabse zyada’, Hotstar says it is targeting the Tier II and Tier III cities which have been “fueling the growth of online video consumption in India.” </li></ul>Hotstar, India’s largest OTT player, already has 60% market share but it wants more. So it is wooing Indians, especially those in smaller cities and towns, a lot more free content. The bar is raised further for the likes of <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> that are dwarfed in competition. The move is further timed well, just before the beginning of the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that is a big money churner and a hot favourite in Indian drawing rooms. Presently, Hotstar’s free content library includes several movies like Chhichhore, Mission Mangal, Star Plus soap operas like <keyword id="83396" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yeh-Rishta-Kya-Kehlata-Hai">Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai</keyword>, Nazar, <keyword id="381946" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kasauti-Zindagi-Kay">Kasauti Zindagi Kay</keyword> and shows from Star Bharat like Savdhaan India along with News. Getting people away from TV With the new campaign, Hotstar says it is targeting the Tier-II and Tier-III cities which have been “fueling the growth of online video consumption in India.” It aims to get all those people on board who have lost access to paid channels after Telecom Regulatory Authority of India imposed new tariffs. While one set of the family may be hooked to these soaps, those within the same family who are interested in cricket may pay for the subscription. It is bad news for television channels too as it may lead to migration from traditional TV subscriptions to OTT. “The next wave of growth for OTT platforms will come from smaller cities as adoption picks up. In fact, non-metros today outstrip metros in terms of video consumption. Through this campaign, our endeavor is to engage with our audiences further in Hindi-speaking markets and take digital video consumption to new frontiers,” said Varun Narang, Chief Product Officer, Hotstar. Going all out Not just that, Hotstar is also planning to opt for door-to-door marketing in Tier-II and Tier-III cities using different mediums of marketing including billboard to advertise about their free library. The campaign comes a week after Netflix removed free first month trial for their consumers. It is now offering a new plan to select new subscribers in India with the first month at ₹5. The offer is only available as an introductory offer to select new subscribers and not for existing users or anyone who is signing up again for premium subscription. India is all set to witness a tough battle in the over-crowded OTT space this year. Hotstar, the leader of the OTT space, plans to break down its own record of 18.6 million concurrent viewers during the IPL season. It has also set aside ₹120 crore to make seven originals across languages. Whereas, Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos are upping their game by investing millions of dollars in originals. As millions of kids stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Amazon Prime Video has also opened up free streaming access to more than 40 children's shows, including its original series. Along with streaming services, Audible Stories is also offering children some entertainment options. "For as long as schools are closed, we're open. Kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids," read a statement from Audible. Actor Rana Daggubati has also made the content in ACK (Amar Chitra Katha) and Tinkle apps available for free for a month. He feels it will help people stay busy while they are under lockdown. The actor is a partner at ACK. There's entertainment avenue for sports lover as well. With an aim to keep the momentum going and fans engaged, NBA and Turner Sports are providing all fans with a free preview of NBA League Pass, the league's premium subscription-based product, until April 22.
