Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s directive to ministries to keep their offices neat and clean has started to show its impact. The <keyword id="173679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Women-and-Child-Development">Ministry of Women and Child Development</keyword> has taken the lead by ‘weeding out’ unused furniture and stacks of waste paper from its office. 
 The ministry, headed by environmentalist-politician <keyword id="42851" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maneka-Gandhi">Maneka Gandhi</keyword>, said it has “reclaimed significant office space by weeding out dead stock furniture and clearing unwanted files and papers.” 
 
The ministry officials worked over the weekend to ‘weed out’ about 1,800 files. Almost 1,350 kg of files and waste paper were disposed off.

Curiously, though, the bride's wedding finery and even her bindi are being removed. At the end, we realise that the bride is actually an underage girl and she is being rescued. Directed by well-known filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, the short yet impactful ad features the powerful vocals of actress-singer Ila Arun, singing a snippet of the iconic song ‘Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye’ written by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. In the context of a wedding, this song speaks to the sadness a bride feels because she has to leave her parent's home. In this case, the lyrics are all the more poignant because she is a child bride. But, fortunately, there is a happy ending to her story as she is rescued. Popular actress, Sakshi Tanwar has extended support to the campaign. The move will provide digital literacy that will help curtail abuse and spread of misinformation. Indian government and Facebook to spread awareness on online abuse via comics and videos

<ul><li>The Indian government is reportedly going to introduce a separate unit dedicated to improve the status of women in different states. </li><li>The unit is likely to be set up under the <keyword id="114696" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-and-child-development">Women and Child Development</keyword> Ministry and its state counterpart. </li></ul>The Indian government is reportedly working on developing a dedicated unit to track the progress of women status in different states across the country, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/bridging-the-gap-unit-to-monitor-states-gender-targets-on-cards/articleshow/69765017.cms?utm_source=ETTopNews&amp;utm_medium=HP&amp;utm_campaign=TN&amp;utm_content=23">reported</a> Economic Times. The government is planning to set up the unit under Women and Child Development Ministry and its state-level counterparts. It will reportedly join hands with the government’s think tank, NITI Aayog and introduce a gender based index that will rank states considering various parameters, said a senior official to Economic Times. Moreover, more and more girls are dropping out from secondary and higher secondary school than before. Most women have to spend ten times the working hours of men in doing household chores. And despite the education, only 23.3% of the female were a part of labour workforce in 2017-2018, according to National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) Many other countries including Finland have a separate unit that is responsible for promoting gender equality. The same idea was suggested earlier this year by NITI Aayog in its Strategy for New India @ 75’ document, however the progress was halted because of the general election that were due to take place in April- May. The new government is now planning to re-look at all the pending proposals, especially those focusing on women. The unit, once developed, will gather data and conduct regular reviews from other ministries and define gender targets to be achieved in that state. Reportedly, some of the targets may include reducing anaemia rate in adolescent girls and mortality rate in pregnant women. Since women are dealing with multiple issues, the key parameter that will help assess the status of women in different states can include, sex ratio, number girls completing secondary school, maternal mortality rate, crime against women and labour participation rate.

<ul><li>As more and more cases of sexual harassments in India have come to light through the <keyword id="5901457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MeToo">#MeToo</keyword> movement, the Indian government is setting up a <keyword id="6955125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="4-judge-bench">4-judge bench</keyword> to address them.</li><li><keyword id="42851" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maneka-Gandhi">Maneka Gandhi</keyword> has also asked for extending the statute of limitations for reporting harassment to be increased to 10-15 years rather than just 3 months. </li><li>The ministry has also set up alternative methods of registering a complaint, in case victims don’t want to reach out to their respective Internal Complaints Committees.</li></ul>The #MeToo movement in India seems to finally be tipping towards action with the Maneka Gandhi, the minister of Women &amp; Child Development, stating that public hearings will be conducted to hear these cases of <keyword id="46530" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sexual-assault">sexual assault</keyword> and harassment.

 A bench of four retired judges will be put in place by the ministry to hear out the cases that have surfaced during the #MeToo movement. The ministry’s also set up a dedicated portal for women to make their complaints, in case they don’t want to go to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), called ‘She-Box’. According to the notice by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, complainants can also reach out via email or tweet directly using the hashtag #HelpMeWCD.

 Gandhi’s also written to the law ministry to increase the time for reporting sexual assault to 10-15 years later. Currently, India’s laws against <keyword id="16048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sexual-harassment">sexual harassment</keyword> entailed in the POSH Act only allow victims to report harassment within 3 months of it happening. She added that “You will always remember the person who did it...Anger at sexual molestation never goes away.”

Even Tanmay Bhat, the CEO of AIB, stepped down in lieu of inaction despite knowing about the events that had transgressed. A number of women have spoken up there after calling out many eminent Bollywood personalities, including Sajid Khan, Subhash Ghai, Nana Patekar and Alok Nath, the supposed Babuji (elder) in the industry. Allegations have also been levelled against the junior minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the political editor at Hindustan Times and a senior Tata Motors executive.

However, the sheer number of such marriages going horribly wrong is a matter to reckon with. Apart from numerous cases being reported where men take their blushing brides primarily to the US only to serve them as glorified maids and subjecting them to both mental and physical abuse, thousands of cases have been reported wherein a man severed ties with his wife a few days after their wedding and left her behind in India without any information whatsoever. And once a summon is uploaded on the website, it would be treated as served to the husband. The reason for serving these notices via a website or newspaper is primarily because the actual addresses of spouses abroad are unknown to the aggrieved party. Once the notices are served, only then can the court proceedings commence. While there is no official data, various NGOs believe that in Punjab and Gujarat alone, around 25000 women have been abandoned by their spouses. And according to a report on the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/nri/other-news/one-nri-wife-calls-home-for-help-every-8-hours/articleshow/62782501.cms">Times of India</a> in February 2018, the Ministry of External Affairs received 3,328 distress calls from NRI women between 1 January 2015 and 30 November 2017 — an average of more than three calls a day or one every eight hours. And the primary causes of the distress were abandonment, harassment, dowry demands, physical abuse and passport seizure. The husbands often use lenient laws in the country they live in to get ex parte divorces and slither out of paying their wives maintenance. In a bid to counter these shocking numbers, the above-mentioned proposal to issue notices via the website will be discussed at a meeting that will be attended by officials from <keyword id="4318185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Women-and-Child-Development-Ministry">Union Women and Child Development Ministry</keyword> (WCD) and MEA next week.
