This works even better when you shop at a discount grocery store.I was a big fan of New Zealand's discount grocery store Pak'nSave. Prices were low, and there was a wide selection of high-quality goods.I mapped out Pak'nSave locations along our route so we could stop and load up as needed. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Truck and trailer <keyword id="6361065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="traffic">traffic</keyword> at an <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> <keyword id="3269272" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="delivery-station">delivery station</keyword> near <keyword id="6368596" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="boston">Boston</keyword> is causing headaches for locals, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/when-amazon-comes-to-town">The Information reports</a>.</li><li>One truck reportedly knocked over a fence and a tree at a cemetery, and another damaged a monument.</li><li>Amazon paid for repairs, and is working with community leaders to address local concerns.</li></ul>Amazon's quest to offer one-hour delivery to nearly all households in the US is causing major headaches for a town near Boston, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/when-amazon-comes-to-town">The Information's Paris Martineau reported on Thursday</a>.Normally, the arrival of Amazon leads to <a href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/job-creation-and-investment/the-amazon-effect-what-a-fulfillment-center-means-to-its-community">local perks</a> like new jobs in delivery and logistics, as well as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-minumum-wage-amazon-salaries-worker-pay-labor-market-shortage-2021-5">better wages for workers</a> at other companies nearby. But <keyword id="3169683" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-Information">The Information</keyword>'s report highlights how the surge of demand in recent years is straining or outweighing some of those benefits for locals in Milford, Massachusetts.Back in 2016, the company converted an old humidifier factory in Milford into a "delivery station" to sort and dispatch packages for the Boston metro area, and expanded its operations to a second facility last year, according to the report.But in March, one of the hundreds of trucks that serve the station knocked over a fence and a large tree at the town cemetery, and weeks later another Amazon truck damaged a grave monument, according to records and meetings viewed by The Information.Local officials told The Information that Amazon-branded trucks were responsible for destroying a traffic light, a retaining wall, several fences, and a store's sign. Amazon claimed it was not at fault for the cemetery damage, but hired contractors to repair the monument and fence and replace the tree, a town official told the publication.The company previously said that because trucks and drivers are managed by independent contractors, it is not generally responsible for the damage or disturbances they cause. Even so, Amazon designed and paid for road signs instructing semi-trailers against driving down certain roads.According to the town official, drivers have said that Amazon's navigation app occasionally directs them to break traffic rules, including routing the semi-trailer through the cemetery.Even when they are following laws, The Information's report highlights that the trucks cause a significant disturbance in the previously quiet New England town. The publication observed 52 tractor-trailers at the Amazon facility between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., and measured sounds from the trucks above 85 decibels - similar to a lawn mower.The Information also observed a holding area for hundreds of empty Amazon-branded delivery vans that also had a bank of portable toilets for drivers. Each morning, convoys of 50 to 100 vans depart the delivery center every half hour, jamming up traffic at surrounding intersections, according to the report."The safety of employees, drivers and communities we serve is our top priority," an Amazon spokesperson told The Information. "When we enter a new community we work closely with local community leaders, business owners, and policymakers to address any concerns regarding the impact of our operations. We worked with the City of Milford throughout our expanded growth and look forward to the continued community partnership."An Amazon spokesperson was not immediately available to comment when contacted by Insider.In its initial proposal to the town, Amazon said the delivery station would provide more than 300 well-paying jobs to the area, but one member of the town's planning board told The Information the deal has been a "net negative" for the community.For its part, Amazon is increasing its engagement with community leaders, organizing trash cleanups, and implementing new policies about traffic flow and noise. In 2019, more than <a href="https://camperchamp.com.au/statistics/new-zealand/">3.9 million</a> tourists visited the island nation.Since 1999, the country has celebrated and highlighted its natural assets and singular landscapes in its "<a href="https://www.tourismnewzealand.com/about/what-we-do/campaign-and-activity/">100% Pure New Zealand</a>." It's also launched spin-off campaign variations, such as 100% Pure Middle Earth, a nod to the <a href="https://discovery.cathaypacific.com/middle-earth-film-tourism-changed-new-zealand/">tourism boom</a> the country saw after serving as the filming location for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lord-of-the-rings-real-life-locations-2015-9">"Lord of the Rings"</a> trilogy. Among the locations drawing the most tourists are <a href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/how-tourism-is-eroding-nzs-world-famous-environment/GUJ3QIXEJAG42SR5QNXSKRH3TA/">Tongariro Alpine Crossing</a>, a national park in the North Island that sees more than 130,000 hikers annually, and the South Island's Milford Sound, which has famously been referred to as one of the <a href="https://nature.new7wonders.com/wonders/milford-sound-new-zealand/">wonders of the world</a> and sees as many as a million tourists annually.In his speech, Nash <a href="https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/better-business/124591029/regional-wage-subsidies-for-tourism-not-fair-says-tourism-minister">said</a> that these "unsustainable tourism levels put far too much undue pressure on communities and our natural attractions and many communities have struggled to absorb."Nash is not the first figure in New Zealand to call for change. In 2019, Simon Upton, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, <a href="https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/SC1912/S00048/environmental-impacts-of-tourism-expert-reaction.htm">spoke</a> about the negative effects of tourism on the environment. According to <a href="https://www.tia.org.nz/about-the-industry/quick-facts-and-figures#:~:text=Tourism%20generated%20a%20direct%20annual,of%20New%20Zealand's%20total%20GDP.GDP.">Tourism Industry Aotearoa</a>, more than 13% of all jobs in New Zealand come from tourism; directly and indirectly, the industry <a href="https://www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/tourism-satellite-account-year-ended-march-2020">employed</a> more than 380,000 people in the year ended March 2019.Nash did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on the future of these jobs should the country's tourism industry indeed be scaled back after COVID-19.<h2>Not the typical model for pandemic recovery</h2>Tourism numbers across the world plummeted in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world and ground <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> to a halt. New Zealand <a href="https://www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/international-travel-december-2020">recorded</a> 996,000 overseas visitor arrivals in 2020, a decrease of 2.89 million from the previous year.The country was hailed as an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-new-zealand-beat-coronavirus-testing-tracing-trust-in-government-2020-5">early success</a> for its handling of the pandemic. It started imposing travel restrictions in February 2020, even though it had no known coronavirus cases at the time. Thirteen months later, its borders remain <a href="https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/covid-19/border-closures-and-exceptions#:~:text=The%20border%20is%20currently%20closed,the%20spread%20of%20COVID%2D19.">closed to almost all travelers</a> to control the spread of the virus.The government is currently working to open a travel corridor with Australia, but in his speech, Nash <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-18/new-zealand-considers-tourism-change-to-counter-negative-impacts?sref=BLKWHazc">noted</a> that New Zealand is unlikely to open back up to mass tourism before 2022.New Zealand's talks about cutting back on tourism post-pandemic don't follow the mold. In fact, they're in direct contrast to many countries' post-COVID plans.Many tourism-dependent countries are currently examining ways to jump-start their tourism industries and bring some much-needed relief to their economies. Thailand, for one, is enticing tourists back in by allowing them to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thailand-to-allow-travelers-to-quarantine-on-yachts-2021-3">quarantine on yachts</a> and <a href="https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/thailand-golf-quarantine-covid-19-south-korea-tourists-14279994">golf resorts</a>. Top Thai resort island Phuket has explored <a href="https://www.businessinsider.co.za/phuket-thailand-resort-island-travel-vaccine-2021-2">mass-vaccination plans</a> that would allow tourism to start back up in earnest by October.<a href="https://www.insider.com/seychelles-travel-covid-no-quarantine-or-vaccine-2021-3">Seychelles</a> announced that it'll be opening borders on March 25 to tourists who present negative PCR test results on arrival, no quarantine or vaccine required. The Indian Ocean island follows in the footsteps of <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/maldives-tourism-arrivals-coronavirus-intl-hnk/index.html">the Maldives</a>, which fully - and successfully - opened to travelers from any country back in July 2020. And <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-iceland-border-idUSKBN2B91BE">Iceland announced</a> that from March 18 it, too, would be opening borders to vaccinated travelers from more countries in a bid to jumpstart tourism.
