These days, it has succumbed to a more humble category.<br /><br />Groceries are shaping up to be a top spending priority for younger generations, according to a February <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/consumer-packaged-goods/our-insights/the-state-of-the-us-consumer?cid=other-eml-mtg-mip-mck&amp;hlkid=884a12b9ce504d838f632238fc7e6ebe&amp;hctky=15274593&amp;hdpid=dc8d9fd7-37ce-45fa-b0bd-ee83fa25efc3">report from McKinsey &amp; Company</a>. <br /><br />The firm asked over 4,000 people, from baby boomers to Gen Zers, about the categories they intend to splurge on this year. Groceries ranked highest for millennials and Gen Zers, outpacing restaurants, bars, travel, beauty and personal care, apparel, and fitness.<br /><br />Millennials are also becoming parents for the first time. That means they spend on themselves, their partners, and their children. It's a notable shift from 2018 when older generations like baby boomers and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/average-grocery-spending-by-generation-in-the-united-states-2018-9">Gen Xers still spent more on groceries</a> than millennials.<br /><br />Gen Z, meanwhile, says the money they choose to spend on high-quality snacks and beverages makes for expensive grocery bills. <br /><br />One 23-year-old Gen Zer told Business Insider by text that he spends about $130 for a week and a half on groceries. "Fancy sodas and drinks" and "random snacks at Trader Joe's" account for the bulk of the bill. He also said he spent about $35 on protein bars.<br /><br />The success of the canned water brand Liquid Death also shows how young people are willing to spend on flashy food and beverages. The brand recently shot up to a valuation of $1.4 billion thanks to a recent round of funding, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/marcuscollins/2024/03/20/liquid-deaths-billion-dollar-valuation-underscores-the-power-of-brand/?sh=6380af01725a">according to Forbes</a>. Peter Pham, an investor in Liquid Death, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-vcs-investing-in-food-and-beverage-startups-2022-2022-10#peter-pham-science-9">previously told Business Insider</a> that part of the brand's success comes from its appeal to younger generations.<br /><br />"The healthy-food-and-beverage space has historically been a stale category filled with boring brands," Pham told BI. "This creates a lightning-in-a-bottle moment for disruptive brands who know how to tap into culture and talk to Gen Z and digital natives."<br /><br />All generations are feeling the pinch of<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/tips-save-money-on-grocery-shopping-2024-2" target="_blank"> inflation at grocery stores</a> and for goods and services in general. The typical American household would need to spend $445 more a month to purchase the same goods and services as a year ago,<a href="https://www.moodysanalytics.com/-/media/article/2022/weekly-market-outlook-another-ugly-inflation-report.pdf" target="_blank"> a report from Moody's</a> found.<br /><br /><em>Correction: April 8, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated the age groups surveyed in the McKinsey report. Millennials and Gen Z's trendy new splurge: groceries

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Lesley Labarba is one of many millennials who are a part of the "Great Reshuffle." </li><li>COVID-19 made her realize she wanted fully <keyword id="11905566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="remote-work" source="Orion">remote work</keyword> options, pandemic or no pandemic. </li></ul><p>Lesley Labarba, 28, had a revelation during the pandemic: She didn't want to go into an office anymore. </p><p>"When I was working at the job where I was going to the office every day, I thought it was perfect," she told Insider. "As soon as I started working remotely and I got the two hours commute time back in my life, I suddenly had more time than I knew what to do with." </p><p>Labarba, who lives in Texas and is now a human resources director at healthcare company Chopra Global, re-evaluated what she wanted from a job in 2020, and has hopped around workplaces since then. She's had three different jobs since the end of 2020, moving between positions as workplaces with better pay, more benefits, and more flexibility presented themselves. The starting offer of her current job was a net raise of 39% from what she was making in 2020, which Insider verified via pay stubs. And she's since gotten another raise. Overall, Labarba is making 65% more than at the start of the pandemic. </p><p>"As all these boomers exit the market and it's filled with Gen Z people, you begin to see time as a commodity," she said, explaining that she thinks young people rising in the workplace value their time more than generations past. </p><p>Labarba is one of the roughly <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/roughly-47-million-people-quit-their-job-last-year.html">47 million</a> people who have joined the "<keyword id="12122646" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="great-resignation" source="Orion">Great Resignation</keyword>" in search of a better career, or as LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky <a href="https://time.com/6107587/linkedin-ceo-ryan-rolansky-interview/">called</a> it last year, the "Great Reshuffle." Many people are searching for higher wages, especially <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-resignation-women-pay-gap-quitting-jobs-to-make-more-2022-3">women</a>. And many are also searching for remote options due to changing preferences for work, a fear of COVID-19 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-reasons-everyones-quitting-great-resignation-biden-labor-secretary-2022-1">exposure,</a> or a lack of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-women-left-work-force-september-labor-shortage-childcare-delta-2021-10">accessible childcare</a>. On top of all that, people are also quitting to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quits-diaries-people-who-quit-jobs-great-resignation-labor-shortage-2022-2">explore</a> their passions outside of work, flexibility that makes a workplace more appealing to people like Labarba. </p><p>"Offering people the most time for themselves and their families is all it really takes to get really good people in the door," Labarba said. </p><h2>Better pay, remote flexibility, and opportunities for advancement</h2><p>For most of 2020, Labarba worked as a human resources manager at small company that does marketing for larger brands like Frito Lay. She describes their handling of the pandemic as "poor," and said she didn't like that they required her to work in person. Labarba asked that the name of the companies she worked for in 2020 be kept private, though they are known to Insider.  </p><p>"It was never going to be fully remote, they made that pretty clear," she said of the smaller agency. "They had a COVID year where they had outstanding sales… but my bonus was significantly less." </p><p>When she was recruited to work at a large digital agency at the end of the year as an operations manager, she jumped at the opportunity. They promised her that the work would be mostly remote, and offered her a 30% pay raise. </p><p>Labarba wasn't alone. Approximately 31% of women who switched jobs in the past two years received compensation packages, including <keyword id="11905568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="salaries" source="Orion">salaries</keyword> and bonuses, greater than 30% that of their previous positions, the <a href="https://www.conference-board.org/press/One-Third-of-Those-Who-Changed-Jobs-Make-More">Conference Board</a>, a private-research group, found last month. </p><p>But a pay raise and remote work on their own aren't necessarily a step up, she said. </p><p>"I had fewer responsibilities," she said. "I grew a little bit miserable over the seven months I was there, so in July, I decided to switch to something that gave me more to do." </p><p>She said that the company was flexible in theory, letting employees shorten their work week, for instance, but that the demands of the workday rarely allowed such in practice. </p><p>"If your employees can't actually leave at noon on a Friday because of the amount of work they have, then what's the point of that <keyword id="11896048" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="policy" source="Orion">policy</keyword>?" she said. "Even the idea of going in just once a week started to make me miserable." </p><p>In 2021, she got started working in the human resources department at ChopraGlobal, which she said has been more fulfilling. She secured another pay raise, making $1,343 in net pay a week. A year before, she'd been making nearly $500 less per week. </p><p>Labarba says that at Chopra, she feels a company-wide commitment to work-life balance, which is what she had been seeking from an employer since the pandemic started. </p><p>"If I say that I'm sick, they're extremely flexible about moving meetings around… and there's no pressure to go into work," she said. "95% of the people I talk to who want to work for Chopra are looking for that model because they don't want to be pushed into an office eventually even if the pandemic completely disappears." </p>

Meet a millennial who took advantage of the Great Resignation to get a 39% pay rise and remote work

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11974765" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gen-z" source="Orion">Gen Z</keyword> expects more out of their employers than previous generations.</li><li>65% said that workplaces should provide financial wellness resources for employees.</li></ul><p>Generation Z, who are under 25 and make up a <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/video/future-workforce-gen-z-really-140016911.html">quarter</a> of the US workforce, have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-retire-early-plans-fire-movement-workplace-great-resignation-2021-12">reshaping</a> what people expect from their employers. Now, they're looking for jobs to include financial wellness training as an added benefit. </p><p>65% of Gen Z said that employers have a responsibility to help their workers attain and improve their financial wellness, according to a new <a href="https://www.tiaa.org/public/pdf/2022_financial_wellness_survey_final_results.pdf">study</a> by the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA), a financial services provider. Older generations are split on the subject, with half of all respondents saying the same. </p><p>Given that Gen Z reported <a href="https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/gen-zers-are-financially-struggling-during-covid-19-pandemic">less financial stability</a> than older cohorts during the <keyword id="11896136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic" source="Orion">pandemic</keyword>, it makes sense that they would turn to an authority to help them avoid the financial plights of millennials, their slightly older peers. Millennials survived <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-great-recession-finances-coronavirus-triggers-financial-crisis-2020-4">two recessions</a>, are hobbled by massive debt, and were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-forecast-millennials-buying-homes-crisis-2021-4">shut out</a> of the housing market for years. Gen Z is faring better <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-gen-z-student-debt-savings-y2k-trends-2021-11#they-have-less-student-loan-debt-than-other-generations-an-average-of-17338-but-thats-likely-to-grow-as-the-generation-ages-into-college-life-6">overall</a>, but that's likely to change as more of its members age into adulthood. </p><p>"It's no surprise that younger people who are just starting are in a fragile financial situation and dealing with the rising cost of living, rent payments, student loan debt, and more," Snezana Zlatar, a senior managing director at TIAA, told Insider. </p><p>Still into their <keyword id="11894132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="careers" source="Orion">careers</keyword>, Gen Z wants access to programs that focus on issues like <keyword id="11909870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retirement" source="Orion">retirement</keyword>, debt management, budgeting, emergency <keyword id="12137393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="savings" source="Orion">savings</keyword>, and health care cost management, Zlatar said. TIAA's research shows that such initiatives are effective. The desire for this training — especially in comparison to older workers — highlights that Gen Z hasn't been settling for less when it comes to work as they've entered the labor market seeking higher pay, remote options, and a better work-life balance. It also underscores the financial crises they've observed — and are trying to avoid — from older generations. The only problem is that employers don't necessarily agree that it's their responsibility to help. </p><h2>The pandemic made more Americans aware of their <keyword id="13132673" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="financial-health" source="Orion">financial health</keyword>, and Gen Z wants to improve theirs </h2><p>The report showed that in the past two years, Americans have scrutinized their own finances more closely, as data shows that people's finances became more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-quantitative-easing-americas-k-shaped-recovery-federal-reserve-2021-1">precarious</a>. According to TIAA's researchers, 51% of all Americans are more aware now of their overall financial health than before the pandemic, with 39% changing their definition of financial wellness since then. Three in 10 people prioritized having an emergency fund more than before. </p><p>When it comes to the efficacy of financial wellness programs, Gen Z may be onto something. The report found that workers who have participated in a wellness program are twice as likely to have a high financial wellness rating than those who are not offered resources or who do not participate, 32% vs. 15%. </p><p>But only half of workers receive financial wellness resources from their employers, and only half of employers said that they felt responsible to ensure their employees' financial wellness. </p><h2>Gen Z wants more from their employers, and more for their financial futures </h2><p>Alongside millennials, Gen Z <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-great-resignation-reshuffle-gen-z-millennials-quitting-switching-careers-2021-10">left</a> their jobs in droves last year, with 65% of Gen Z looking to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-quitting-joining-great-resignation-reshuffle-job-with-purpose-2022-2">join</a> "the Great Resignation" in 2022. In August, a <a href="https://www.personalcapital.com/blog/whitepapers/research-yolo-economy-great-resignation/">study</a> by Personal Capital and The Harris Poll found that two-thirds of Americans wanted new jobs. The majority of Gen Zers agreed (91%), as well as more than a quarter of millennials.</p><p>The youngest workers report wanting a sense of <a href="https://www.lever.co/research/2022-internal-mobility-and-employee-retention-report/?utm_medium=pr&amp;utm_source=news&amp;utm_campaign=leverbrand&amp;utm_content=job%20crafting%20report">purpose</a> from their new jobs, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-pay-cut-relocate-lower-cost-of-living-2021-12">more affordable</a> places to live and work, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-gen-z-thinks-about-the-future-of-work-2021-12">permanent remote options</a>, and more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-slow-up-great-reshuffle-gen-z-demands-workplace-2021-11">mental health days</a>. This may be at least partially spurred by the pandemic. Gallup <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/358385/younger-workers-worse.aspx">reported</a> that it impacted younger workers' careers more negatively in 2020 than older workers', experiencing more stress, anger, and lower employee engagement. </p><p>And when it comes to their financial wellness, Gen Z also has millennials in the rearview as more of them begin to come of age, as many of their older peers are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-millennials-student-loan-debt-major-barrier-to-home-ownership-2022-1">hobbled</a> by student debt and living <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/broke-millennials-living-paycheck-economic-crisis-savings-spending-survey-2021-6">paycheck-to-paycheck</a>. </p>

Gen Z wants employers to train them to manage their finances

People resurfaced Jon Ossoff's old, very-millennial tweets after he was projected to win Georgia's runoff Senate race

<p>But making it in the Big Apple as a person in your late 20s or early 30s isn’t as glamorous as they make it out to be in "Sex in the City" or "Girls<em>." </em></p>
<p>New York has one of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/27/cities-high-cost-of-living_n_1236841.html">highest costs of living in the country</a>. Recently, there have been reports that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-is-pushing-out-its-middle-class-2013-2?op=1">New York is even pushing out its middle class</a>. Just to be considered in the middle-income bracket, New Yorkers have to make at least $45,000 to $134,000 annually.</p>
<p>So what does it take just to get your foot in the door here as a young adult? We talked to two real estate experts — Svenja Gudell, a Zillow senior economist, and J. Philip Faranda, broker and owner of J. Philip Real Estate — to understand what it really takes for a person in their late 20s or early 30s to make it in NYC.</p>
<p><strong>Where they live. </strong>Not too surprising, most young adults can’t afford Manhattan prices. Gudell looked up prices of rents in Manhattan and even as a real estate expert, she was surprised at the result. Rents have exploded, and in just the past year, Manhattan prices have risen by 20.8%, Gudell said.</p>
<p>“If you look at West Village or Midtown, rents are around $4,000 for the median rental property there,” Gudell said. “I’m not talking about a five bedroom penthouse … I would assume that’s a one bedroom or two bedroom at most.”</p>
<p>Even though Manhattan’s the place to be, the hot spot for people in their late 20s and early 30s is across the river.</p>
<p>“[It’s] Brooklyn, without a doubt,” Faranda said. “Brooklyn has reached what you might consider critical mass. It’s not isolated out there and there’s a social life in Brooklyn.”</p>
<p>Brooklyn’s been a trendy spot for a while for people in their earlier years, but Faranda pointed to Park Slope and Bedford-Stuyvesant as a few up-and-coming neighborhoods. In general, anything along the coast of the East River is popular because the ease of <keyword id="58218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Commuting">commuting</keyword> into the city, he said.<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>“There was a time when Bed-Stuy was not some place people wanted to go, but it’s gentrified incredibly,” Faranda said.</p>

Faranda said it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what a young person would ideally want to pay for their apartment, but anything more than a couple thousand is probably too high. At the early stages of their careers, young adults make widely varying salaries, and Faranda said the natural answer to how much they want to pay in rent is “as little as possible.”
<p>“When you’re 28 and you maybe have a cat, maybe a dog and maybe a goldfish … if there’s just (you), you want under $2,000,” Faranda said.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">By the time a person strikes their late 20s, they are also often trying to get away from having roommates and typically try to live by themselves or with their significant other, he said.</span></p>
<p>“That’s where the trend is just because that’s the station in life,” he said.</p>
<p>Below are some of Zillow’s median rent list prices for popular neighborhoods in New York. Citywide, the median rent list price is $2,730.</p>
<p>-Bedford-Stuyvesant: $1,800</p>
<p>-Astoria: $2,100</p>
<p>-Williamsburg: $2,900</p>
<p>-Park Slope: $2,600</p>
<p>Gudell said some of the areas where rents are growing the fastest include Flatlands and Georgetown in southeastern Brooklyn and Sunset Park in western Brooklyn — all places where 20-somethings might reside. Some of the places rents are growing the slowest are Murray Hill, Turtle Bay and Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, she added, which have a lot of young people as well.</p>
<p>“Rents are still very high in (those areas), so high that (they're) just not growing as fast as some of these up and coming Brooklyn places,” Gudell said.</p>

<p>But for a person in their 20s or 30s who’s still trying out different neighborhoods and isn’t ready to settle down in one location for more than two or three years, renting’s still the best option, Gudell said. </p>
<p>“Be careful that you’re not getting in over your head if you do end up buying,” she said.</p>
<p>Gudell said the top advice she gives people when apartment hunting is to look for a place that will give them a short commute time to work, since that’s a trip that they have to make every day. That's especially true for people who don't yet have kids and aren't worried about hunting for good school districts or family-friendly areas.</p>
<p><strong>Other costs. </strong>According to <a href="http://budgeting.thenest.com/average-grocery-budget-family-two-3421.html">2010 numbers from the Nest</a>, the cost of groceries in New York is less than you would expect. A 26- to 35-year-old couple living in New York City is estimated to spend $274 monthly on groceries, compared to $390 for a couple in Omaha, Nebraska. Other sites have higher numbers — estimating the prices at close to <a href="http://becomeanewyorker.com/grocery-shopping-in-new-york-city/">$100 per week for two people</a>.</p>
<p>For entertainment, Faranda said the younger <keyword id="6380509" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="generation">generation</keyword> has figured out how to have fun on “a shoestring <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword>,” even in New York. A lot of people in their 20s and 30s have cut out cable costs by opting for a Netflix subscription, for example.</p>
<p>“Their ability to get entertainment and recreation through their iPad and their (mobile device) is pretty darn good,” he said.</p>
<p>It’s easy to be tempted by five-star restaurants and high-profile concerts when living in such proximity to Manhattan. But people in their 20s need to know how to set a budget as much as anyone. And it's smart to price hunt across the city for groceries and nightlife to find the best deals.</p>
<p>“After awhile, you start to get used to paying higher prices and you simply adapt your budget and what you buy until you get the most bang for your buck,” <a href="http://becomeanewyorker.com/grocery-shopping-in-new-york-city/">says becomeanewyorker.com</a>.</p>

But Faranda warned prospective renters to watch against anything that seems too good to be true. It probably is.</p>
<p>“It may not necessarily be a scam, but for example, I know someone who got a terrific deal on an apartment and then found out his landlord was going through his garbage,” Faranda said. “If something is too good to be true in housing, it probably is.”</p>
<p>Faranda also says people in their late 20s need to have their act together and go to a broker prepared, bringing copies of pay stubs, W-2 forms and credit reports. Typically, those are all required documents. And fill out your rental application completely with references who are willing to be called.</p>
<p>“Have your act together,” Faranda said. “Don’t make me go through your filing cabinet. Be a grown up.”</p>

How Samsung's Galaxy Is Closing The Sales Gap With The iPhone

<p>Teen retailer Aeropostale is focusing on one thing to get back its hold in the millennial market: <keyword id="6355118" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="technology">technology</keyword>. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The company is shedding its formerly logo-heavy brand and working to boost sales through increased engagement with young consumers.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In October, Aeropostale launched a new prototype store filled with flashy colors and fun-filled cityscapes. And now, Aero is taking its new image one step further by launching </span><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aeropostale/id452209341?mt=8">a new mobile app</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> and in-store <keyword id="101239" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPad">iPad</keyword> kiosks, aimed at making the brand more easily accessible and improving engagement with the teen consumer base.</span></p>
<p>"This is the future," said Jacob Hawkins, <span>Aeropostale's vice president of e-commerce. </span>"This is the way [teens are] going to interact with our brand."</p>
<p><span>The teen <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> market has been led by three brands: Aeropostale, American Eagle, and Abercrombie and Fitch. Forever 21, another competitor, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/forever-21-dominating-teen-retail-market-2013-3">has been growing like crazy</a> in recent years.</span></p>
<p><span>All four companies have mobile apps, and have had them for a while. But Aeropostale seems to be the first to install iPad kiosks in their stores, which could draw in more customers and give the brand a needed leg up on the competition. </span></p>
<p><span></span><span>American Eagle </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/american-eagle-beating-other-teen-retailers-2012-10">dominated the teen retail sector</a><span> during the last back-to school season, and the company's <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/10/aeropostale-americaneagle-sales-idUSL1E9CA2KV20130110">sales were up 5 percent</a> at the end of last year. </span><span>Aeropostale, on the other hand, has been battling a slow recovery from the recession and its sales <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/10/aeropostale-americaneagle-sales-idUSL1E9CA2KV20130110">slid by 6 percent</a> during the holidays.</span></p>
<p>Marketing to millennials is a different challenge than marketing to the rest of the consumer base. Teens are tend to be connected to their phones, and care about what their friends are saying about brands online.</p>
<p><span>"It's not just about selling a good product at a good price," Hawkins said. "It's about telling a story."</span><span></span></p>
<p>Aeropostale's mobile web traffic has grown by 167 percent during the past year, making up more than a third of total online traffic to Aeropostale.com, according to company data. Its revenues from mobile traffic have also increased from 2 percent in June 2010 to 13 percent today.</p>
<p>But retailers still want to see their customers in stores, and Carin van Vuuren, <span>the chief marketing officer of Usablenet, which created Aeropostale's new app and iPad setup, said the updated app aims to draw teens in through its new store locator and mobile coupons.</span></p>
<p>"If you create an experience that streamlines some of the things that people want to do, you'll increase the amount of time that they spend engaging (with) the brand,"  van Vuuren said. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"For millennial customers, this is the only way."</span></p>
<p><strong>Here's what's coming for Aeropostale:</strong></p>
<p>The app has adapted. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Besides an online store, Aero's new app includes a style guide, outfit builder, and branded videos. Together, the elements are aimed at connecting teens to Aero's brand, rather than just increasing commerce, Hawkins said.</span></p>

<p>It's connecting with your bank account.<strong> </strong>Van Vuuren said one successful feature of Aero's current app has been connecting online shopping with PayPal accounts so customers don't have to worry about inserting their credit card information for every purchase.</p>
<p>Decreasing barriers to checkout is key to increasing buying, she said.</p>
<p>In stores, customers can use Aero's new iPad kiosks to piece together outfits, browse product reviews and pick out music to jam to in the dressing room. </p>
<p>Usablenet has developed similar touch-screen systems for Cache and British brand Marks &amp; Spencer, van Vuuren said.</p>
<p>The merchandise is changing too. Logos aren't being slapped on everything.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>Hawkins said Aeropostale has been working to change its merchandising during the past two years, focused on shifting from a "key item" business to a lifestyle brand. Customers walking past a storefront a few years ago would have seen "flat style" <span class="st">—</span>piles of jeans and t-shirts on display.</p>
<p>"We stacked them high and sold them deep," Hawkins said.</p>
<p>Now, storefronts incorporate a more fashion-forward focus, with mannequins decked out in fashion bottoms, colored denims, footwear and accessories.</p>

<p>The prototype <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">store is intended to feel like customers are walking through the rooms of a home, and has a New York vibe that reflects Aero's identity as a northeast brand, Hawkins said.</span></p>
<p>Numbers aren't finalized yet, but he said the chain is planning to open or remodel 40 stores nationwide into the new tech-friendly, fashion-centric models this year.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Aero's primary customers are teenage girls, who spend far more time on their phones than they do on laptops or desktops, Hawkins said.</span></p>
<p>To capitalize on this, the company has launched a new SMS texting program, sending out the latest offers, coupons and company announcements to teens' smartphones.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The goal of all this new technology is to streamline Aero's image as a fun, teenage brand, and give customers a consistent experience across all platforms, Hawkins said. </span></p>
<p><strong></strong><span>"A brand like Aeropostale is increasingly about building their infrastructure to personalize experiences," Van Vuuren added.</span></p>

She said her students were "beyond ecstatic" when the first Jonas Brothers reaction video blew up and made her swear to "give them a cut" of whatever she earns with her newfound TikTok celebrity. </p><p>"It has been a wonderful bonding experience for us and they look forward to Fridays!" she said.</p><p>In the last few months, TikTok has become a wellspring for content related to Generation Alpha, a category used to describe kids born around or after 2010. Older generations have made videos trying to unpack the <a href="https://www.insider.com/skibidi-toilet-gen-z-alpha-memes-internet-culture-outdated-old-2023-7">surrealist nature of Gen Alpha humor</a>, and several videos have gone viral theorizing why these kids <a href="https://www.insider.com/generation-alpha-honey-badgers-millennials-zoomers-kids-debate-authority-defying-2023-8">should be called "honey badgers"</a> because of their authority-defying nature.</p><p>Zinn noted she's noticed that her students are "habitually behind" in education and interpersonal skills because of the years they missed during the pandemic. But, also due to lockdowns, they've grown incredibly proficient with technology.</p><p>"They are the COVID kids so their childhood has been anything but normal," she told Insider.</p>

Close to 100% of people aged 18 to 34 in the US used the social network as of December 2015. Coming in a distant second, with under 65%, is Instagram - which is also owned by Facebook. </p><p>And it's not like millennials are signed up for Facebook, but not using it. Take a look at the y-axis: Facebook absolutely smashes it on the average amount of time users spend on the site each month, too. Facebook users are on the site (or app) for more than 1,000 minutes a month, on average; Snapchat, in second place, is under 400. </p><p>It's a pretty clear rebuttal to the claim that <a href="http://mashable.com/2013/12/16/quitting-facebook/#A9LtVGbg9iqG">milennials are abandoning Facebook</a>.</p><p>When you look at the data for people older than 35, it's even more compelling. No, your grandparents don't count. iPhones and the like are everywhere, but one college student recently wrote an ode to her flip phone - and explained why she thinks everyone else is missing out.</p><p>Bekah Pollard is a contributing editor for The LaLa, a website for and by college women. Her essay, <a href="http://thelala.com/11-things-girl-flip-phone-wants-know/">"11 Things The Girl With The Flip Phone Wants You To Know,"</a> started making its way around Twitter this weekend.</p><p>Even though she loves her flip phone, Pollard says she's hardly a luddite.</p><p>"<span>I'm not trying to make a statement or prove a point by purposely resisting technology that's increasingly consuming all of our faces ...," she writes. "I'm simply of the philosophy, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. She can't watch videos. She needs to look up directions before she goes anywhere.</span></p><p>But there were some perks.</p><p>Charging her phone, she explains, is not something she has to do each day. Because of this, I am SO good at keeping myself entertained when there's nothing going on. People watching, eavesdropping, doodling, wandering…you name it, I can entertain myself with it."</span></p><p><span>Last September, TIME published <a href="http://time.com/3318573/flip-phones-millennials-iphone6/">a piece about milennials who still use flip phones</a>. Many people interviewed for that piece noted that their flip phones often served as good conversation starters at bars. Pollard agreed.</span></p><p><span>And if you're still not convinced? "<span>My phone literally flips open and closed," Pollard boasts.
