In addition to a 5,413-square-foot main house, there's a private landing strip, lake, riding arena, and two barns.</p><p>Markkula and his wife, Linda, bought the home and surrounding acres for $8 million in 1982. "We've enjoyed it. We've loved it but it's time to move on," he <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-co-founder-lists-carmel-valley-ranch-for-45-million-1470926529">told</a> The Journal.</p>

This makes their cards highly collectible." </span></p><p><span>Some of the rarest VC cards include Don Valentine (Sequoia, an investor in Atari), Mike Markkula (Angel, an investor in Apple), and Jenny Lee (GGV, an investor in Alibaba). A recent <a href="https://boingboing.net/2018/11/08/collect-them-all-venture-capi.html">Boing Boing report</a> showed one lucky collector scored a Sam Altman in their pack. </span></p><p><span>A TouchBase spokesperson wouldn't confirm how many different VC cards exist today, but said it's "always creating new series." A San Francisco based company has made trading cards of Silicon Valley's top VCs because, well, it's Silicon Valley

It went from being a place that was a lot of fun to being more of a "workaday" corporate experience, he remembers.<br><br>"My only insider credit was that my mom had this relationship with Steve, Steve liked my mom. This was before the summer I started working at Apple. He had an interview on TV in Oakland, and I got drafted to drive him in my VW bug. Steve, even at that point, he was a handful, an intense person."</br></br></p><p>When the Apple II launched in the summer of 1977, it had color graphics. So Jobs changed the company's logo to an Apple silhouette filled with a rainbow.</p><p>Johnson says, "Steve Jobs commissioned a local shop to create an embroidered patch to commemorate the new corporate logo.  These patches were handed to each of the employees by Steve. I have asked around via Facebook to the other early Apple employees and no one can remember them. If there is another patch that survived, I'd like to know. My daughter was a flag girl at Saratoga High and had embroidered letter 'S's' on their sweaters. I had the same company do the logo for us. Mike Markkula and I went to Macy's and bought white sweaters for everyone to wear at the show and had the logo put on the breast of the sweater. But his predecessor, Steve Jobs, had a hidden talent for operations as well, said Dan'l Lewin, who worked closely with Jobs at Apple.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs is known for his marketing and design talents.</strong></li><li><strong>But according to Dan'l Lewin, an executive who worked closely with Jobs in the early days of Apple, he also was an expert when it comes to managing supply chains.</strong></li><li><strong>Current Apple CEO Tim Cook is given credit for straightening out Apple's supply chain during the company's resurrection in the late 1990s, but Lewin said Cook couldn't have done it without Jobs.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Steve Jobs is well known for being a master marketer and a product design savant.</p><p>But here's something that few people realize: He was also a genius when it came to supply-chain management, according to someone with whom he worked closely in his initial run at Apple.</p><p>Even in his first tenure at the company, which lasted from its founding in 1976 until his firing in 1985, Jobs showed that he knew how to manage the company's inventory and ensure that it manufactured its products efficiently, said Dan'l Lewin, who worked as an executive under Jobs first at Apple and then at Next, which Jobs started after he was fired from Apple in 1985.</p><p>"His focus on supply chain and inventory and those things was phenomenal," said Lewin, who recently took over as the CEO of Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum after a near-17-year run as the head of Microsoft's Silicon Valley outpost.</p><p>Lewin continued: "I just remember that relentless pursuit. And it's just something that he never let go of."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/author/troy-wolverton">Troy Wolverton/Business Insider</a></span></p><p class="caption">Dan'l Lewin, CEO of the Computer History Museum</p></div><p></p></div></div>In the popular accounts of Apple's resurrection in the late 1990s after Jobs returned to the company, Jobs gets credit for revamping the company's products and marketing, and Tim Cook, then the company's chief operating officer and now its CEO, gets the credit for fixing its supply chain and making it hyper-efficient. But those accounts understate the importance of Jobs' own mastery of supply-chain management, Lewin said.</p><p>"I don't think Tim would be there if it wasn't for Steve," he said. "And I don't think Tim would have been able to execute as well if [Jobs] hadn't been as good as he is on that topic."</p><p>Lewin began working with Jobs at Apple in 1981 and saw the latter's supply chain knowledge at work with the Macintosh computer line, which the company launched in 1984, and then at Next. But Lewin doesn't know how Jobs acquired his expertise. Jobs had little formal training in much of anything, famously dropping out of Reed College after being enrolled there for just one semester.</p><p>He might have picked up his knowledge about supply-chain management from operations managers brought in by Mike Markkula, Apple chairman in the early 1980s, Lewin said. Regardless of where he got it from, it wasn't surprising that he knew about it, Lewin said.</p><p>"He was a sponge," Lewin said.</p><p>Citing Jobs' favorite quote that "good artists copy, great artists steal," which he always attributed to Pablo Picasso, he added, "you just observe what's around you and integrate it. And he was sort of a synthesis machine. Steve Jobs wasn't just a design and marketing genius - he had a hidden talent for logistics too, says a former Apple exec

<p>Sculley ran Apple for 10 years, steering it through a difficult financial time. But he is commonly known as the guy that fired Steve Jobs from Apple.</p>
<p>That's not exactly the way it happened, Sculley said on Thursday in Bali, Indonesia at the annual Forbes Global CEO Conference.</p>
<p>"I was hired to be Steve's partner," he said. "I had no interest in taking over his company."</p>
<p>When Sculley was hired, Apple was at a crossroads. It had "failed" with Lisa and with the Apple 3 and needed cash to develop the Mac, which wasn't projected to be profitable for years, he said.</p>
<p>He and Jobs were "great" personal friends before they clashed. But "when the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Office">Macintosh Office</a>, the next version of the Mac introduced in 1985, failed, Steve went into a deep depression over it. And it really wasn't his fault. It was all about Moore's Law ... the reality was the Mac Office wasn't powerful enough. It just couldn't do very much. It was being called a toy and ridiculed in the market," Sculley said.</p>
<p>Jobs wanted to drop its price and do more advertising. Sculley didn't think those things would make the product successful but would cause the company to lose money.</p>
<p>Jobs wouldn't back down so Sculley took the argument to the board. The board assigned the third co founder of Apple, Mike Markkula, to research both sides and Markkula agreed with Sculley.</p>
<p>Then board told Jobs to stop running the Macintosh division.</p>
<p>"They didn't fire him. He was still the chairman and largest shareholder," Sculley said.</p>
<p>(Sculley didn't say this but by stripping him of his responsibilities, Jobs felt betrayed and left Apple, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/steve-jobs-fire-company/story?id=14683754&amp;page=2">Jobs later said</a>.)</p>
<p>"I really blame the board," Sculley said. "I think the board understood Apple at the time and understood Steve. I think there could have been a solution to keep me and Steve working together" he said. </p>
<p>Sculley says he also came to understand how "different" it is to lead a company when you are creating an industry, like Jobs and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, versus when you are just another competitor in an established industry.</p>

<p><span>Fernandez says, "the whole thing is a work of fiction," though he</span> didn't see the movie. When it was in production, he says, "<span>I talked to Victor Rasuk, the actor who was playing me, and he would say, 'Well, did this happen?' and I would say, 'No.' And ultimately I understood that they were not trying to create a historical document, they were doing a dramatic piece. From those variety of hints or clues, I formulated the opinion that I’d probably be really upset if I saw it."</span></p>
<p>Kotkke, who did see the movie, and even consulted a bit said, "<span>Well, Ashton’s very good. I have no complaints with him at all, no complaints with his portrayal of Jobs. The complaint that people would rightly have about the film is that it portrays Woz as not having the same vision as Steve Jobs, which is really unfair."</span></p>
<p><span>He also says, "<span>The early versions were painful. Really painful. I forwarded the first draft to Mike Markkula because they wanted his feedback, and Mike took such a bad reaction to it, he wouldn’t have anything more to do with the project. By the time it got to the fourth draft, it was okay. It wasn’t making me cringe. But they still had a scene of me arguing with Steve, which never ever happened, but, you know, in the realm of artistic license."</span></span></p>

Two Of Apple's First Employees Review The New Steve Jobs Movie: 'The Whole Thing Is A Work Of Fiction'

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak had barely moved out of the Jobs' family garage to the company's first official corporate address, 20863 Stevens Creek Blvd., (Building 3, Suite C) in Cupertino, Calif.</p>
<p>The pair had successfully begun shipping their first computer, a naked circuit board called Apple I. It had neither a keyboard nor a screen, and functioned more as part of a kit that computer hobbyists could build into something more useful, if they knew what they were doing.</p>
<p>Two early Apple employees, Bob Martinengo and Mark Johnson, spoke to Business Insider about what it was like working with the two Steves back in the days when nobody knew what Apple was. They passed on to us this collection of images from Apple's early days. We've combined it with some other early Apple images from Business Insider's archives.</p>
<p>The images are remarkable because they show life at Apple before the period when everyone realized the company was going to change the world. For them, it was just a paycheck. And, of course, carrying and using a camera in the 1970s took a lot more effort than it does today. They weren't used daily, the way phone cameras are now - so early Apple images are relatively rare.</p>

<p>"It was obviously a heck of a lot of fun," Martinengo says. (He now works at AMAC Accessibility, a company that makes products and services for disabled students.)</p>
<p>Brennan, 22 at the time, later became Jobs' girlfriend, a relationship he trashed when she became pregnant. Jobs disavowed the child, Lisa, despite naming the Apple Lisa machine (in development in 1978) after her. Jobs only admitted Lisa was his daughter when she reached her teens.</p>
<p>Johnson, like Martinengo, was employed to assemble the Apple II.</p>

<p>The Apple II was the machine that really put Apple on the map: An integrated home computer with a keyboard and screen, that anybody could use.</p>

<p>It was "A rather small office space," Johnson says. "This one office included the lobby and office space without a dividing wall. When you turn to the right, you enter the manufacturing area. Incidentally, Apple occupied the adjacent office space to the right of suite C. A smaller office space where Bill Fernandez designed circuit board layouts." <p>Note that in the Stevens Creek office, Jobs and Wozniak worked right next to each other. That would change when Apple - now with about 30 employees - moved to its second, slightly larger office on Bandley Drive, also in Cupertino. There, Jobs and Woz sat as far apart as possible:</p>

<p>"In the short time I was there it went from a goofy startup to a full-blown production line," Johnson says. It went from being a place that was a lot of fun to being more of a "workaday" corporate experience, he remembers.<br /><br />"My only insider credit was that my mom had this relationship with Steve, Steve liked my mom. This was before the summer I started working at Apple. He had an interview on TV in Oakland, and I got drafted to drive him in my VW bug. Steve, even at that point, he was a handful, an intense person."</p>
<p>When the Apple II launched in the summer of 1977, it had color graphics. So Jobs changed the company's logo to an Apple silhouette filled with a rainbow.</p>
<p>Johnson says, "Steve Jobs commissioned a local shop to create an embroidered patch to commemorate the new corporate logo.  These patches were handed to each of the employees by Steve. I have asked around via Facebook to the other early Apple employees and no one can remember them. If there is another patch that survived, I'd like to know.  This might be quite a unique artifact of early Apple days."</p>

He was the first product manager for the original Mac.</strong></li><li><strong>Shelton told us what it was like dealing with Jobs' infamous "reality distortion field." In truth, Shelton says, Jobs' was not the master of mind control that many people made him out to be.</strong></li><li><strong>And Steve Wozniak, Jobs' cofounder, was like a "big kid" who occasionally hid behind office cubes when he didn't want to get dragged into something.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Joe Shelton joined Apple on April 30, 1979, when the company had fewer than 100 employees. "I stumbled into it" after six years in the US Navy, he told Business Insider.</p><p>"They were making something called a 'home computer' and my mother said, 'I don't know why anyone would want a home computer.'" But, "I leaped all over the job because it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun," he said.</p><p>He was right. For a few years, Shelton's desk was 30 feet from that of late founder Steve Jobs. He also worked with Steve Wozniak - the other founder of Apple who contributed most of the programming brilliance in the early Apple years.</p><p>And, with the two Steves, he also took meetings with a young Bill Gates, whose (then) little-known company Microsoft supplied part of the operating system for early versions of the Apple II computer. They worked together until Jobs and Wozniak left the company in 1985. Shelton left the company in 1992.</p><p>Business Insider asked Shelton what it was like dealing with Jobs' infamous "reality distortion field" - his ability to convince colleagues of grand, ambitious projects, even when they didn't make sense, based on the sheer intensity of his personality. In truth, Shelton says, Jobs' was not the master of mind control that many people made him out to be.</p><p>Shelton was initially hired as a marketing analyst but soon became the product manager for many of the early versions of Apple's software, such as Apple Writer, the word processing app for the Apple II.</p><p>In 1981, not many people were writing software applications for the Apple II. Shelton was worried that the Apple Software Publishing group was promising impossible-to-meet sales numbers at the expense of quality. So Shelton decided to resign. "I'd already written my resignation letter with my opinions on the company's direction and given it to one of my bosses, the head of the Apple II and III group, and had just given a copy to Mike Markkula - chairman of the board and VP of marketing - when I ran into Steve."</p><p>Standing in the hallway at the Cupertino headquarters at Bandley Drive, Jobs asked, "So what are you doing?"</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Joe Shelton</span></p><p class="caption">The Macintosh division gathered in front of the Bandley 3 building just before the launch of the Mac in late 1983 or early 1984.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Shelton said, "Actually, I think we're going in the wrong direction and I'm leaving the company."</p><p>Jobs replied, "come with me."</p><p>The founder took him to Bandley 4 building and showed him what Steve's secret group was working on next: The Mac prototype. It was the first computer to use a point-and-click interface, with a mouse, and pull-down menus for commands and functions.</p><p>The machine was revolutionary: It swept away computers that used lines of code text as commands and replaced them with a visual environment that featured folders, icons, and trash cans - things people recognised from real life. The reason your laptop looks the way it does today is because of the Mac.</p><p>"Would you like to be the product manager?" Jobs asked. Shelton demonstrated the Mac for journalists at its product launch.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Everybody in the Mac group loved Steve," Shelton said, even on the days when Jobs was wrong.</p><p>A key feature of the Mac was its 128K capacity. This tiny amount of memory was a big deal in its day. But even during Mac's development stages, it threatened to become a limit. One day, Jobs gathered the Mac team - about 40 people - in the atrium at Bandley, where there was a Bosendorfer piano, a ping-pong table and a 500cc BMW motorcycle. He wanted to address his decision to hardwire a 128K limit into the new Mac. The 128K limit meant that users could not run programs that needed more than 128K of capacity - including the operating system.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Joe Shelton</span></p><p class="caption">There was a motorbike parked in the Atrium of 10460 Bandley Drive. Shelton says: "It was a 500cc BMW motorcycle similar or identical to the one that Steve had ridden in Africa (or so the story goes.)  A man called Apple one day in early 1984 after the Mac was introduced and offered to trade it to Steve for a new Mac. Steve agreed and I got a ride to pick the BMW. It was late Friday afternoon so rather than leaving it outside for the weekend and having my garage full of my five motorcycles plus his, I parked it in the atrium - where it remained for some time like a work of art.  It was perfect!  I don't know if Steve ever took ownership."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Standing in front of his employees, Jobs told them, "we want developers to write small, efficient code, not Microsoft code." His logic was that would metastasize all over the place. The limit would become Apple's advantage by forcing developers to do more with less headroom.</p><p>The staff seemed to like the logic - Jobs' reality distortion field at work - but Shelton wasn't convinced. "I was the only person who wasn't accepting it because I knew how operating systems grow, how software grows." Jobs thought developers would make their apps smaller, "but it wasn't going to go that way," Shelton says. Software code only ever balloons in size.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Although Shelton's employee number was 345, due to staff churn there were only about 100 people at Apple when he joined in 1979.</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>So Shelton visited a colleague in the Mac development group, Andy Hertzfeld, the primary software architect on the Mac. "We can't do that," Shelton told him, referring to the 128K limit. "That's really dumb. We can't design a hard stop on the software."</p><p>Hertzfeld replied, "I agree, we won't do that."</p><p>But didn't Steve Jobs just insist on a 128K limit?</p><p>Hertzfeld told Shelton, "<em>Steve</em> will do what he wants to do. <em>We</em> will do what Steve needs us to do. Except when <em>we</em> need to do what <em>we</em> need to do."</p><p>That was the moment Shelton realised the Jobs reality distortion field had holes in it. The Mac was not, ultimately, hardwired into a 128K limit although many believed it was. It had capacity beyond that, although Jobs' people did not initially inform their boss that the Mac was more powerful than the company was officially saying.</p><p>"Steve figured it out eventually," Shelton said.</p><p>Wozniak was almost the opposite of Jobs, Shelton says. Jobs regarded himself as the company's North Star, a leader who would get up in front of the entire Mac group staff and announce a difficult decision. But Wozniak - who preferred building and coding - sometimes ducked management responsibility.</p><p>Shelton remembers one time trying to get Wozniak's input on a decision as Wozniak walked through the office. Wozniak wasn't the tallest person in the room but he has distinctive bushy hair, which Shelton could see bobbing between the cubes that separated each desk.</p><p>"Hey Woz," Shelton yelled at him.</p><p>"His head would disappear when he ducked down [behind the cube walls] because he didn't want to deal with you."</p><p>Apple went public in 1980, making Woz a wealthy man. "The minute he got money Woz was mentally out of it," Shelton says. He had a child-like enthusiasm for new toys and gadgets. He bought a single-engine airplane with his new wealth (<a href="https://www.cultofmac.com/465778/today-in-apple-history-steve-wozniak-in-plane-crash/">which he crashed in 1981</a>). "Woz loved his stuff," Shelton says.
