He's long since been gone from the company, leaving after five years in 1993, when RIM was still in the business of making radio devices, not smartphones.
He's got a boatload of great stories about RIM in its early startup days. When he joined the company, its offices were in a little strip mall above a Kentucky Fried Chicken. He says that working for founder <keyword id="144990" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mike-Lazaridis">Mike Lazaridis</keyword> was exciting but challenging. Lazaridis was a dramatic, demanding boss, taking on projects, making West work long hours on them, and then suddenly shifting gears to something new.
For instance, West got the job interview by answering an ad on the job recruitment board at his college. It was a tiny, hand-written note that said, "Game developers wanted. Call Mike." West called and Lazaridis hired him on the spot. When West asked what games they would be developing Lazaridis told him, "Oh, we're not doing games anymore."
Eventually West moved on. He spent a decade at Intel where he stayed in touch with Lazaridis, turning RIM into Intel's customer. West's team at Intel helped design some of the chips used for the BlackBerry smartphone.
West surfaced again this week as CEO of an interesting startup in Phoenix, Ariz. called <a href="http://www.seriousintegrated.com">Serious Integrated</a>. Serious sells affordable off-the-shelf touchscreens for all sorts of electronics gear like medical equipment, fitness gadgets, or commercial equipment. It's claim to fame is the software that customizes the touchscreen, which is as easy to use as building a blog on Wordpress.
Serious was a presenter at the Venture Capital in the Rockies show held in Beaver Creek, Colo. this week. It won the award for the best presentation.

RIM's First Employee: Mike Lazaridis Was The Most Intense Boss I Ever Had

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jay Baruchel talked to Insider about playing BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis in a new movie.</li><li>We chatted about his hatred for the iPhone, his equal hatred for the wig he wears in the movie, and more.</li></ul>Jay Baruchel's anxiety-filled comedic talents made him one of the stars of Judd Apatow projects like "Undeclared" and "Knocked Up" in the early 2000s, and later the voice of Hiccup in the hit animated franchise "How to Train Your Dragon."And that's what makes his performance so good in "BlackBerry."As one of the nerdy Canadian founders of the smartphone, he commands the screen without leaning into the things that have made him famous.Directed by Matt Johnson, "BlackBerry" chronicles the rise and dramatic fall (thanks iPhone) of the first-ever device that allowed you to make calls and send emails at the same time. A mix between "The Social Network" and an episode of "Silicon Valley," this comedy is fueled by its two main characters — co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, played by Baruchel and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star Glenn Howerton.As Howerton's Balsillie is a powder keg of rage, Baruchel's Lazaridis goes from nebbish innovator to a corporate shark, complete with slicked-back white hair, tailored suits, and a befuddlement over why anyone would want a phone that's just all screen and doesn't have keys to type.For Baruchel, 41, it's a performance that shows his growth as an actor. Even though it meant having to do it with an extremely uncomfortable wig on all the time."I would have to take three showers to get all the glue out," the actor told Insider.Here, Baruchel chatted with us about his hatred for the iPhone, Arnold Schwarzenegger picking a booger off his face while they were shooting the upcoming Netflix show "FUBAR," and why we shouldn't get our hopes up about him teaming with Seth Rogen and the other Apatow ensemble anytime soon.<div type="image" title="Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton in suits standing next to each other" height="464" width="824" msid="100166141" hostid="261"></div>It sounds like, just within the last few years, you stopped using a BlackBerry.Yes, 100%, and I still miss it. I hate the iPhone that I'm talking on right now — and not just the one in my hand, I hate them all! And basically, you were guilted into changing to an iPhone. Correct. That's exactly right. Everybody moved on. When my mother was telling me that I had to get with the times, I realized it was time. And I don't need half the crap that's on this thing.Being from Canada, a big reason you were drawn to "Blackberry" was to be able to highlight an innovation created by Canadians, right?And one that I actually liked. And it's not like this is a commercial for it. I have no interest in making any version of corporate propaganda. I'm not even that into a love letter to a product, but what I am interested in is drawing attention to a pretty profound innovation, and an important one.If anybody is interested in how the way that we communicate and relate to one another is largely informed by smartphones then it should be interesting to see where that started. It's all crazier when you come to learn that the innovation was made by some nerds in Waterloo in the late 1990s.Frankly, the foundation of how we live and communicate today is this device. That's the thing. I'm less interested in how much people liked it when it was around. What I think is much more interesting is how fundamental it is to this world that we're in today. Especially that BlackBerry is somewhat forgotten. The iPhone has given us all amnesia in a way. But in terms of Canadian ingenuity, it is having a spotlight at the moment. There's this movie, as well as the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUGACNfgpu4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Bowl commercial</a> of Dave Grohl giving love to all the things invented in Canada. Have you seen that?Oh! That's great. [Laughs.]You've never seen it?No, I haven't. That's awesome. <div type="image" title="Jay Baruchel and Matt Johnson standing next to each other" height="619" width="825" msid="100166143" hostid="261"></div>Now, correct me if I'm wrong, is this the first time you've played a real-life person?I mean, technically, the guy I played in "Almost Famous" was a real person. Mike Lazaridis is a little more rich and famous than that guy. [Laughs.] You're not wrong. Mike is a little more wealthy than anyone I've ever known, combined. But I think you're right, I never thought about it, but yes. Did you do a deep dive on Lazaridis or just have the script be your guide?The script. And actually, that was a very early question I asked of Matt: "How much of an impersonation are you interested in?" I was curious what his priorities were.He was much more interested in me and the "good music," let's say, that comes out of me. He wanted to see how that would sound with the notes he'd written. So the Mike in his screenplay is not necessarily the Mike in real life.This is not from transcripts. This is not a recreation from a documentary. This is a meditation or a poem based on a book based on true events. So I went off the Mike on the page. And it's clear that you are doing things in this movie that are very non-Jay Baruchel. The ticks and mannerisms that we have come to know from you are not in this performance. Was that a challenge not to go back to the old bag of tricks?It was something that MJ and I talked about early on. Once we figured out the guy that we were going to create was going to be something that wasn't an impersonation of Mike and also something I'd never really done before, I really tried to take away the things that would be crutches for me: moving my hands a lot when I talk, I have an awful fucking instinct to bust a joke in a scene, all of the stuff that one develops being on set every year since 1995.I tried to mitigate and play defense against that. We felt the tension that would create would be interesting, just the effort to resist my impulses.It was challenging and fun, but every night I would go home and think I sucked. Then, when I started wearing the real serious fuck-off wig towards the end of the movie — which took two hours to put on and an hour-plus to take off — all I thought about was, "Thank fuck the wig is off."At the same time, I was also making this Arnold Schwarzenegger show I'm on. <div type="image" title="Jay Barchuel with white hair and wearing a black shirt" height="1397" width="2879" msid="100166144" hostid="261"></div>"FUBAR" on Netflix. So you were going back and forth shooting both at the same time?Yeah. So that's why I couldn't dye my hair for "BlackBerry." I basically had my normal head of hair because I needed it for "FUBAR" and I had to glue it all down and put a bald cap on to get the wig on.It didn't help that there was a serious heat wave going on at the same time we were making "BlackBerry." So finally when you saw footage, you realized it was all worth it. You know what, when we were shooting. Even if I second-guessed myself I knew what was being shot was spectacular. I knew Glenn was amazing and Matt was directing the fuck out of it. I knew it was fucking good. And to your point, I have to highlight the last shot of the movie. I won't give it away, but only to say it's very much an ode to "The Wolf of Wall Street" ending where DiCaprio is saying to all the people at his talk, "Sell me this pen." Was that a scene where you just knew you were on the right movie?Oh yes. And to be honest, I was annoyed about something when we shot that so it elevated the performance in that scene. I forget what I was crabby about, but it worked because, in that shot, Mike is crabby. So even being annoyed I knew the work was good. You know it's going to be a good movie. And there's another great scene. You and horror-movie icon Michael Ironside have a brief stare-down. It's so good that the score for the scene has a "Scanners" vibe to it. That I didn't really get until I saw it in post. I didn't have a beat on it on the day. I really hope I brought my game for that scene. I didn't want to make Michael Ironside look bad.But the movie fan part of me felt if we're successful in everything before this scene then this scene is going to land like a motherfucker. <div type="image" title="Jay Baruchel holding onto Monica Barbaro's leg" height="1533" width="2300" msid="100166145" hostid="261"></div>You mentioned "FUBAR," what was it like working across from Schwarzenegger?Crazy. For someone born in 1982 and therefore was a teen when Schwarzenegger was at his apex, to work with basically my John Wayne was spectacular.I play his daughter's boyfriend on the show. He was great and he even wiped a booger off my face. It was crazy. What?!It was a quick reset on a scene because we were running out of time and they had already clacked the slate and Arnold was like, [speaking in Schwarzenegger accent] "Wait, you have schmutz on your face," and I was like, "What?" And he just wiped it off my face.He was like, "Oh, it's a booger," and he flicked it and we went forward with the scene. So Arnold Schwarzenegger wiped a booger off my face. [Laughs.] Sometimes this job is just fucking bananas. Do you see yourself playing Hiccup in the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise again?If they asked me back and <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0213450/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dean</a> was part of it, I would be up for it. To be honest, we're just carrying different universes.There is love there, but the love of somebody that you chime in with four times a year. It's like a cousin. I live in Toronto, and I'm doing my shit. They are in L.A. and doing their thing.I think people dig the shit we did, so I imagine if it all made sense we would all be interested. Critics and nostalgic BlackBerry fans alike say they're thrilled by the cast and the chance to revisit the iconic phone.The film uses the 2015 book "Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry" by writers Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff as its source material, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/15/23641399/blackberry-trailer-keyboard-phone-always-sunny" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Verge reported</a>. It tells the story of the rise and fall of Canadian tech company Research in Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry. The Canadian telecom company was originally named Research in Motion and had tens of millions of customers. It started out creating pagers and handsets, but the first iteration of the smartphone, complete with iconic keyboard, took shape within its first 15 years.At one time, BlackBerry controlled 50% of the smartphone market in the US and 20% globally. In the mid-aughts, BlackBerry phones were everywhere. But demand rapidly declined, and in 2016, BlackBerry stopped manufacturing its own phones. So, what happened?In 1984, two Canadian engineering students, Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, formed Research in Motion. At first, the company dabbled mostly in random projects: an LED system for GM, a local network for IBM, and even a film-editing system that won an Oscar in 1998. In 1989, the Canadian phone company Rogers contracted RIM to work on its Mobitex network, a system specifically designed for messaging, giving RIM a leg up as an early expert in mobile messaging. Fast-forward to 1996, when RIM created its first two-way pager. And for the next few years, the company iterated on that design, gradually adding features like a color display, WiFi, instant messaging, and web browsing. In 2002, the company unveiled its first model that could be called a phone. In 2006, RIM added the trackball so users could scroll around the screen.Avery Hartmans: BlackBerry figured out a way to make its phone indispensable to the wealthy and powerful. And having it really meant something about who you were as a person; it was a status symbol. And that's where we got that name CrackBerry. People were almost addicted to it and addicted to that feeling of always being connected.Narrator: The BlackBerry had a simple design, an easy learning curve, and was clearly marketed to business professionals. The full keyboard made it possible for them to work outside the office. They could respond to emails, texts, browse the web, basically anything they might need to do at a computer. And there was one other beloved feature: BlackBerry Messenger.Hartmans: The BBM messaging service was a key component of BlackBerry's success as well because they figured out really early on that people wanted to have an instant connection to people; they want to be able to message back and forth without limits. And being able to BBM also added you to that really exclusive club of BlackBerry-only users. Narrator: This convenience, paired with inclusivity, paid off. By 2007, the company was pulling in more than $3 billion in revenue with a net income of $631 million.Hartmans: At that point in time, BlackBerry had all these government contracts and big business deals, and those deals in turn spurred more consumer adoption. So at that point, BlackBerry was just dominating the US market.Narrator: So, with all those contracts and dollar signs, the company had nothing to worry about, right? Steve Jobs: The problem with them is really sort of in the bottom 40 there. It's this stuff right here. They all have these keyboards that are there, whether you need them or not to be there. What we're gonna do is get rid of all these buttons and just make a giant screen. A giant screen.Hartmans: The iPhone was something consumers had never seen before. The iPhone was a full-touch-screen device, and that was a huge leap in innovation at that point for the mobile industry. BlackBerry was still using physical keyboards at that point. Narrator: But the iPhone didn't kill RIM immediately. It just signed its death warrant. BlackBerry didn't view the iPhone as competition since it didn't cater to the business market. So it carried on, business as usual. RIM released the BlackBerry flip phone in 2008, quickly followed by the BlackBerry Storm, its first touch-screen device. The Storm was reviewed and trashed by critics, who said it was "a definite letdown because of the phone's sluggish performance and bugginess." But BlackBerry phones still continued to sell for a few reasons. The iPhone was more expensive than the BlackBerry and exclusive to AT&amp;T until 2011, forcing customers in the US to either switch providers or pick a new phone. And, very simply, people just didn't wanna give up their keyboards.So, for a while, BlackBerry was fine. But RIM underestimated how quickly the smartphone market was changing. There was a new updated iPhone every year, and other smartphones, like the Motorola Droid, began to hit shelves. RIM tried to keep up. It rolled out innovative new devices, like the PlayBook tablet and Torch, but the devices were not well received. The PlayBook even shipped without an email app, which made it useless to BlackBerry's business-minded customer base. In June 2010 came BlackBerry's death rattle with the release of the iPhone 4. Soon after its release, Apple's phone sales surpassed BlackBerry for the second time. But this time, they stayed there.Hartmans: BlackBerry was slow to change. Its company ethos was built around designing a great product that just worked and iterating on it very slowly. To that end, they would add small features over time, but they weren't shooting for big, sweeping changes that would shock and delight consumers.Narrator: It wasn't the fact that there was no well-established BlackBerry app store, although that was big.Comparatively, Android and Apple were more top of mind for app developers. BlackBerry wasn't. The phones missed out on a bunch of features that appealed to consumers, like front and back cameras. These shortcomings ultimately led to RIM's downfall. RIM's global market share began a downward spiral, going from 20% in 2009 to less than 5% in 2012. By the time RIM finally released its spec-competitive touch-screen phone in 2013, it was just too late.That same year, RIM officially changed its name to BlackBerry. BlackBerry thought its loyal customers would wait around for it. Spoiler: They didn't. At this point, people were locked into either iPhone or Android. And in the last quarter of 2016, out of more than 432 million smartphones sold worldwide, only 207,900 were BlackBerry devices, which officially made RIM's smartphone market share 0%. And in 2016, Chinese consumer-electronic company TCL essentially bought the BlackBerry phone brand, which led to their departure from the smartphone market, 14 years after the release of its first phone. But the phones live on, sort of.Commercial: Introducing the new BlackBerry Classic with more power and control than ever before.Narrator: The deal was for TCL to design and manufacture BlackBerry hardware while the BlackBerry company provides the software. Today's BlackBerry phones still have the iconic keyboard but run on Android, not the BlackBerry OS, giving users their beloved app store and much more customization options. The phones are still marketed to a specific type of user, people who want enhanced privacy and security features, with the marketing materials spotlighting the phone's security protections and battery life. But the latest BlackBerry phone, the Key2, was released in 2018. These days, a new model comes along every year, and 2019 has come and gone without any new BlackBerrys. Whether we see a new BlackBerry anytime soon or not, the phones will always be a brick in the foundation of smartphone history. How BlackBerry went from controlling the smartphone market to a phone of the past

Former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie sold the last of his stake in the company last year, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1070235/000114420413008519/v334679_sc13ga.htm">according to an SEC filing</a>.
Balsillie joined BlackBerry in 1992, eight years after it was founded. He was co-CEO with founder Mike Lazaridis until in January of 2012 when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rims-ceos-are-out-2012-1">they both stepped down to let Thorsten Heins take over</a>.

He also rebranded the company as BlackBerry, killing the company's name of <keyword id="3687589" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Research-In-Motion">Research In Motion</keyword>.
When Balsillie stepped down last year, he was one of the company's largest shareholders with 26.8 million shares, <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57569379-94/ex-blackberry-co-ceo-jim-balsillie-dumps-entire-stake/">CNET reports</a>. At the time <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-23/rim-s-quant-jock-balsillie-steps-down-after-20-years-as-chief-executive.html">he said</a>, "I remain a significant shareholder and a director and, of course, they will have my full support."
Something clearly changed. He <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ex-rim-ceo-balsillie-steps-down-from-board-rim-coo-out-too-2012-3">stepped down from the board last March</a>. And he gradually sold his shares.

iPhone 5S And 5C First Weekend Sales Are Less Impressive Than They Seem

Of course there are many successful ones too, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Larry Ellison.
The difference may come down to how well founders demonstrate <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesleadershipforum/2011/06/24/the-leaders-checklist/">the 15 core principles of leadership</a>, according to Michael Useem, professor of management at the Wharton School and author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Leaders-Checklist-Expanded-Edition-Mission-Critical/dp/1613630050">The Leader's Checklist</a>."
"Running a larger enterprise requires a <keyword id="34454" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="leadership">leadership</keyword> skillset distinct from that required for a startup," Useem writes in his book. "Founders who intend to remain at the helm through the transition will want to master an ability to set the tenor and sustain a culture that carries hundreds if not thousands of employees in the right direction when the founder’s personal hand will no longer suffice."
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Leaders-Checklist-Expanded-Edition-Mission-Critical/dp/1613630050"></a>Some of these can be hard for founders, including the ability to:
Build leadership in others.
 At a certain point, it becomes impossible for CEOs to be deeply embedded in everything that's going on at a company, which is why they need trusted leaders. This is the only way for an organization to grow.
 This can be hard for founders who are reluctant to give up control.
"You can't do it by yourself. You have to get people to line up and help you," Useem tells Business Insider.
Articulate a vision.
CEOs must be able to "formulate a clear and persuasive vision and communicate it to all members of the enterprise," writes Useem.
Doing so is essential to creating a system that can endure and expand beyond the leader.
"[You need] an ability to get beyond personal leadership and find ways to put it into the framework," Useem says. This way whenever "anyone walks into the company and without you having to say anything, they have some fix on what you want from them."
This can be hard for founders who are so focused on having autonomy in their own idea that they struggle to articulate it to others.
Think and act strategically.
CEOs must be able to analyze where a company is going and anticipate future risks.
Staying ahead of the game is more important than ever "because the world is now more complicated and more uncertain," Useem said in an <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/features/leading_in_the_21st_century/michael_useem">interview with McKinsey &amp; Company</a>. "On top of always having a great vision there will be a premium on thinking strategically and on being able to come back from setbacks, and maybe above all, on being very good at reading the increasingly ambiguous and uncertain universe we operate in."
Strategic leadership means questioning everything, even one's own ideas, and being willing to change directions.
This can be hard for founders who are too set on their original idea.
Place common interest first.
CEOs must worry about their employees, their customers, and their global impact.
"In setting strategy, communicating vision, and reaching decisions, common purpose comes first, personal self-interest last," Useem writes.
This can be hard for founders who may feel entitled to getting the most out of the company that they created.
Manage relations.
CEOs must "build enduring personal ties with those who look to you, and work to harness the feelings and passions of the workplace," writes Useem.
Part of this is allowing people to feel ownership in the company so that they have a sense of how the vision will affect their own work and career growth.
Different people bring different skills to a business, and a variety of skills are necessary for a company to grow.
This can be hard for founders who care more about ideas than employees.
