India's <keyword id="2914658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="leading-smartphone-handset-player">leading smartphone handset player</keyword>, <keyword id="181985" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics-Limited">Micromax Informatics Limited</keyword>, on Monday announced its investment in <keyword id="6433699" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ixigo">ixigo</keyword>, a mobile travel search and marketplace. 

	ixigo helps Indian travellers plan their trips, find the best train and bus services, book cheapest flights, cabs, hotels and more. Following the investment, Micromax will strengthen its foray into application services. It will also give ixigo a reach of over 30 million incremental users over the next year.
 <keyword id="13079" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Sharma">Rahul Sharma</keyword>, Co-founder, Micromax Informatics said, "We are really impressed with ixigo's talented team and its mobile technology. We look forward to working closely with them to build on-demand and one-click travel experiences for Micromax consumers. We will be announcing more such partnerships over the next few months to accelerate our journey into services." Micromax had last month announced that it would be making <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> of 20 million dollars in over 20 startups in the coming year. For this objective, Micromax has also set up an M&amp;A team which has been actively sourcing and working with startups across major technology markets such as <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, Europe, Israel and India to bring in the best products and capabilities. 

	Meanwhile, Aloke Bajpai, CEO &amp; co-founder, ixigo said, "Eighty per cent of our travel &amp; transportation queries and 50% of our transactions currently originate on mobile devices. This partnership with Micromax will strengthen our market leadership in mobile travel services for middle class users. We expect to quadruple our mobile user-base in the next 12 months."
 

	ixigo aims to provide relevant travel services to the next 300 million smartphone users, and has recently entered the budget hotels, packages &amp; cabs segments. It plans to use this investment for expanding its product &amp; technology team and to add 25,000 small and mid-sized travel service providers to its marketplace offering, making ixigo the most comprehensive platform for comparing and buying travel services on mobile.

After Healthifyme.com, Micromax invests in ixigo

<keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, the leading mobile handset maker from India, is eyeing the China mobile market next year, as a part of its target to become world’s number 5 player worldwide by 2020. 
 
The target might require it to raise cash through a public listing or strategically align with a partner, as per Vikas Jain, one of the four co-founders of Micromax Informatics. 
 
Micromax is India's second leading smartphone player after Samsung, and believes that to break into the top five list in the world, it’s first important to enter the largest market. 
 
"We are in the second largest market, and we're not afraid of being in the largest market as well, so you might see Micromax launching in China sometime soon," Vikas Jain was quoted saying at Rise conference in Hong Kong. He also pointed that all top players, be it Samsung or Apple, are present in China. 
 
"So unless we do that, the top five will elude us," he added. 
 
The company has already entered a few international markets, and has even become the third biggest player in Russia.

Micromax aspires to enter the Chinese mobile market by next year

In a move to outdistance <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> in the next few months, India's No. 3 smartphone vendor Intex Technologies imported more smartphones than second-ranked Micromax Informatics did in April. 
 According to data from <keyword id="226414" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="market-researcher">market researcher</keyword> Cybex Exim Solutions, Intex imported 897,000 units of smartphones while Micromax imported 876,000 units, including 100,000 units for its subsidiary <keyword id="288420" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Yu">Yu</keyword> in the month of April, as per an Economic Times report. 
	 

	A Micromax spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a significant part of our portfolio is locally produced. We have built capacity over the last couple of years in manufacturing facility where we can produce over two million devices every month." In the rapidly expanding Indian smartphone market, <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and Micromax have been placed at the first and second ranks respectively for several quarters. Intex was not even in the top five players earlier, but it surged up the ranks to become the No. 3 player in the quarter to December 2014. 
	 

	This happened as more people in the sub- 5,000 category moved to smartphones, a segment that Intex dominates. "The <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword> gap between Intex and players like Micromax and Samsung is narrowing. We expect 1 million smartphone imports in the month of May, up from almost 0.9 million in April," said <keyword id="366460" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Keshav-Bansal">Keshav Bansal</keyword>, marketing director at Intex.

Intex might overtake Micromax in smartphone imports

The duo are quite a competent team and can take the Micromax’s business to new levels. Sanjay has vast experience in the mobility sector and is one of the best persons around to fit the chairman’s shoes.

Micromax is all new and fresh. India’s number 2 smartphone brand unveiled its new logo and tagline and also launched 15 new smartphones to consolidate its market presence. 
 
Micromax 3.0 with the brand philosophy ‘Nuts: Guts: Glory’ said it wanted to become the first Indian company to have over 100 million connected devices by end of 2017.

The open sale of the flagships will begin on April 20. The Canvas 6 will come with a finger print scanner, full metal body, 3GB RAM, and 32 GB storage space, which will be expandable. 
 
Meanwhile, Canvas 6 Pro will be backed by 4G RAM and run on a Helio processor.

Micromax is going for the kill to be numero uno, unveils new logo with 15 new smartphones

<keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword>, the mobile phone maker company from Gurugram has decided to invest up to Rs 600 crore over the next three years in a bid to turn into a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Micromax-is-going-to-disrupt-consumer-electronics-space-wants-to-MNC-challenger/articleshow/52684641.cms">consumer electronics</a> company. 
 The company, which was founded in 2000, expects that its consumer <keyword id="4245827" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="durable-products">durable products</keyword> would make up about a fourth of its total revenue over the coming three years, with products ranging from washing machines to new range of air conditioners and televisions. 
 It was in 2013 that <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> had ventured into consumer durables, prior to which it only dealt in mobiles. 
 
With a huge budget kept aside, the company aims to join the leaders of air conditioner market, regardless of the stiff competition.

 "Our strategy of connected devices under the broader view of being a consumer electronics company will take a step up with new air conditioner models and then with washing machines," <keyword id="1071660" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohan-Agarwal">Rohan Agarwal</keyword>, VP (<keyword id="4245821" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="consumer-electronics-business">Consumer Electronics Business</keyword>) told ET. "We will invest abut '200 crore every year to build the channel and service," he added. 
 
One aspect in which the company aims to differ from its rivals is the after sales service, for which it has introduced the Micromax Home Assist application. It allows its AC and TV consumers get after sales service from over 400 centres spread across the country. 
 
In the coming three years, the company has plans of getting 60 to 65% of its business from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Micromax-unveils-new-logo-with-15-new-smartphones/articleshow/51811617.cms">mobile phones</a>, 25% from consumer durables and the remaining from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Micromax-is-now-eyeing-Africa-Middle-East-CIS-as-part-of-global-expansion/articleshow/50853137.cms">international markets</a> such as Russia, where it has plans to launch its LED televisions. 
 
The Russian market has already accepted the brand and Micromax is among its top three smartphone players.

Micromax sets aside big budget for consumer durables segment

<keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, which was not even half of Sony in turnover, might pip Sony India as it crossed Rs 10, <keyword id="6367198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="000-crore">000 crore</keyword> in annual revenues during year to March 2015. 
 
Micromax Informatics grew sales by a whopping 47% in 2014-15 to Rs 10,450 crore. Sony India’s business grew 10% with revenue at Rs 11,010 crore. 
 
As Micromax is banking on online and 4G smartphones business, experts feel it will pip Sony India, which is revamping its smartphone business. 
 
"In smartphones, the growth during the second half will be driven by 4G models which now account for 30% of our portfolio with 20 models and will be further strengthened. We also have around 10% share in LED televisions, which will continue to grow," Micromax chief executive officer Vineet Taneja told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, Sony India said they may come down due to no solid sporting event. 
 
"On a like-to-like basis without the laptop portfolio, our sales growth rate was 22%. However, this year we expect sales growth may come down due to absence of any major sporting event like last year which drives television sales," Sony India's sales head Satish Padmanabhan told ET. 
 
According to Counterpoint Research, though Micromax has increased its sales from online, it is facing a tough time in $50-100 price segment from Intex, Lava and others. 
 
"If we have to grow at this pace, we have to gain share which we will continue to strive, but will also not do anything for short-term benefit which several of the brands are now doing," said Taneja.

Micromax is the new Usain Bolt as annual revenues cross Rs 10,000 crore

Till 2011, the company had produced and/or acquired 17 films, including Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Sarkar Raj. Balaji Motion Pictures was set up in 2001 by Hindi television producer <keyword id="6354597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ekta-Kapoor">Ekta Kapoor</keyword> with the purpose of venturing into film production. Ex-Micromax CMO Shubhodip Pal Is Now CEO Of Balaji Motion Pictures

As compared to last year, the sales of smartphones increased, by both value and volume, this festive season. The sales went up on huge demand for smartphones in Rs 20,000-category. The smartphone sales increased by minimum 40%. 
 
The upbeat sales has set a trend for the quarter ending December, which typically makes up for nearly a fourth to a fifth of annual revenue for the industry. This is a relief after a tepid first half this year. 
 “Compared to last year's <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword>, we saw an increase of 40 per cent in actual sales by volume, as per consumer activations, for <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones, and if we include Yu, sales were up 60 per cent,” <keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword> chief marketing officer Subhajit Sen told ET. 
 People with knowledge in this sector said that <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>’s mobile phone sales saw an increment of about 40%by value and consumer electronic’s sales had a risen sale of about 30%. <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> and <keyword id="145729" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karbonn">Karbonn</keyword> also had an higher sales by 14 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, while players such as <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and LeEco, which have comparatively smaller bases, saw their sales more than double this Diwali against last year. 
 
The rise seen in sales during this season is said to be because of pent-up consumer demand coupled with a number of model launches by top tier as well as new entrant Chinese brands. Enabling 4G phones to allow Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and higher purchasing power due to good monsoon this year, acted as key catalysts. 
 
"This resulted in a 125 per cent growth in smartphone sales during Diwali compared to FY15-16,” Ravinder Zutshi, chairman of the mobile and communications council at CEAMA, the consumer electronics manufacturing association, told ET. 
 
There was an increase seen in the sales of phones in the range the Rs 8,000-20,000 and increased number of people entered the Rs 10,000-12,000,Rs 17,000-18,000 and the Rs 15,000 price points. 
 
"So, consumers in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segments ended up spending more and moving to one of these price bands, thus expanding share of the mid-segment. This was not the case last year,” a chief executive at one of the leading retail chains in India told ET. 
 
The strong demand during the festive season this year brings some relief to an industry which has seen smartphone sales losing pace in the first half of the year as fewer consumers switched from featurephones to smartphones, forcing analysts to lower their smartphone sales expectations in 2016 by as much as 17 per cent.

Brands such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vivo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vivo</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gionee&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gionee</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=oppo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Oppo</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=leeco&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">LeEco</a> have increased their brand presence, majorly in offline medium than online and are even doubling the commission by 10 per cent. 
 
"Indian players, which usually operate on 2-3 per cent margins, are facing tough competition from Chinese players. Further, online-only Chinese players are willing to sacrifice margins, even go into negative margins," Counterpoint Research senior analyst Tarun Pathak, told ET. 
 
Not only this, the smartphone makers also paying charges between Rs 30,000 and Rs 31 lakh to mom-n-pop stores for redesigning their shop fronts and carrying the brand's name, which was done for free earlier. 
 "Tapping the retailers for a branding opportunity is a great idea which is proving to be effective for us," Vivek Zhang, chief marketing officer at <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> India, told ET. 
 
The Chinese presence has made Indian smartphone makers increase their budget for marketing and advertising as they have to match to survive the competition. 
 
Indian players such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=micromax&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Micromax</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=intex&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Intex</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lava&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Lava</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=karbonn&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Karbonn Mobiles</a> have to compete aggressively. 
 "We've always maintained that significantly high advertising spends and trade margins to gain short-term market share is unsustainable - especially true in the current scenario where overall industry margins are under pressure," Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer at <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> Informatics, told ET. 
 
As of the quarter ended March 31, Chinese players had a 22 per cent share of smartphone sales, which is expected to increase to 25 per cent, said analyst Pathak. 
 
"We have spent about $10 million (about Rs 67 crore) on marketing online and print in the first quarter this year, and we will spend similar amounts for quarters to come," LeEco's COO Atul Jain told ET.

Companies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=samsung">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=micromax">Micromax</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lenovo">Lenovo</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sony">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LG">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=karbonn">Karbonn</a>, Intex, Lava and Gionee are going to launch an array of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=4G">4G devices</a>. 
 
The top brands will refresh their handset line-ups with 4G, which has seen a jump of around 20% in sales in the world's fastest growing market.

 Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer at <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> Informatics, said the company will be launching around five new <keyword id="1948108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-smartphones">4G smartphones</keyword> across varied price points and specifications to address needs of the diverse consumer set. 
 
This festive season will also see spurt in online sales. The online-only smartphone sales have contributed to more than 20% of the total smartphone sales between July and September so far, according to Counterpoint Research. 
 "We soon plan to launch our new premium range of Xperia Z series <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> in India, alongside global launch. Sony will pump in a total of Rs 250 crore towards marketing during the festive season," said Taro Yamamoto, head, Xperia division, <keyword id="233026" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sony-India">Sony India</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword> has also earmarked nearly Rs 30 crore for marketing spend around Diwali this year and is expected 40-50% boost in sales. 
 
Indian vendors like Intex, Lava and Karbonn are also betting big on the season ahead and expecting to sell around 1 million smartphones. 
 
China's Gionee, which has ventured with Foxconn and Dixon to kick-off domestic production of handsets, will be spending around Rs 50 crore in marketing during the festive season with three new 4G models planned. 
 
Counterpoint has estimated 24% and 26% sequential growth in overall and smartphone market in the third quarter of 2015. In the October-December quarter, the growth is expected to continue because of Diwali falling near mid-November apart from other market forces and competitive landscape like Reliance Jio LTE launch and growth of ecommerce channel.

Samsung, Micromax, Sony, LG spark fireworks, all set to launch 4G devices this festive season

<keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> is seeing a tough competitor in <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> in India. After losing to the latter in Chinese market, Apple struck back in India, world’s fastest growing market. 
 
Apple managed to grab the sixth spot in India's top 30 cities, which make up 51% of the smartphone market. 
 
As per a report by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple was in sixth position even in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, such as New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru, which are strongholds of Indian vendors. 
 
IDC revealed that Apple topped the premium price segment of $300 (Rs 20,000) and above, with an over 42% share across the 30 cities following the launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in the first half of the quarter and subsequent price drops of its earlier 5s, 6 and 6 Plus models. 
 Apple held a 4.6% share in the 30 cities, with <keyword id="135365" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-Electronics">Samsung Electronics</keyword> and Micromax Informatics continuing to be top two players. 
 
In the tier-2 and 3 cities, Apple was sixth with a 2.8% share. Xiaomi had a 4.5% share in all 30 cities. 
 
Apple sees India as a bright spot and is planning to open own stores in the country.

It’s been long that <keyword id="2470989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chinese-smartphone-companies">Chinese smartphone companies</keyword> found their way to the <keyword id="1034848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-smartphone-market">Indian smartphone market</keyword>, one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets in the world, but now, they have started to make a strong foothold here, giving tough competition to the top three brands - Samsung Electronics, Micromax Informatics and Intex Technologies.

The Chinese brigade, led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/OPPO-to-locally-manufacture-10-lakh-4G-phones-per-month/articleshow/51509077.cms">Oppo</a>, Vivo and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Gionee-is-seeking-approval-for-opening-single-brand-stores-in-India/articleshow/50716940.cms">Gionee</a>, gained a significant share in the market during the first quarter of this fiscal, riding on the back of an aggressive retail and marketing strategy.

These Chinese brands emerged as favourites amongst the trade because of a bigger margin payout as compared to other mainstream brands. They also shell out more money for display space and branding, which is why they have been able to make their way into the smallest of neighbourhood stores in India. 
 
The share of Chinese smartphone brands rose to 27% of the total smartphone market in Q1 of FY 2016-17, as compared to 21% in the last quarter, said Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

As compared to that, Samsung's share fell to 25.6% during Q1, as compared to 29% in the preceding quarter. Similarly, Micromax's share slipped to 14.1% from 17%, and Intex lost 1.5% share from the last reported 10%.

Even though Samsung shipped more units when it comes to absolute numbers, the share narrowed because of a slower growth rate as compared to the Chinese brands, as told to ET by Tarun Pathak, senior telecom analyst at Counterpoint Research. 
 
Samsung, however, said that it had consolidated its smartphone market share to 47.7% in the first six months of 2016 as compared to 38.4% from same period last year. 
 
"Not only do we lead the premium segment with an over 50% market share, our <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Samsung-just-launched-two-new-Galaxy-phones/articleshow/53119048.cms">Galaxy J2 series smartphones </a>in the affordable segment, with Make for India innovations, has emerged as the most popular device of India, contributing 24% of the smartphone value market share," said Manu Sharma, VP (Mobile Business), <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> Electronics.
