You can’t get bogged down in every negative comment or fabricated controversy, or else you’ll start diverting resources from the things that truly count. You have to lead from the front, but getting derailed by naysayers could put you in a place of fighting from behind...to be a leader, you have to be OK with not being liked."
In a speech to students at Stanford's Center for Leadership Development and Research, Rhee says that company leaders often have to deal with negative comments and personal attacks, and when this happens, Rhee chooses to ignore the subjective criticism and focus on the facts instead.
Rhee says it is better to channel your energy toward things that actually matter. In order to do this, you must define your single goal and never stray from it.
"These [personal attacks] are nothing but distractions that will divert my attention from my goal if I let them ... it’s a good lesson: If you want to truly lead, it’s going to come with controversy, so develop that tough skin now, get used to it, and keep your eye on the ball."

In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DonaldTrump/videos/10156570856100725/">video he uploaded to Facebook</a> in January, for example, Trump vowed to end the controversial nationwide education standards."Common Core's a total disaster," he said. "We're going to end Common Core."He also frequently uses the Common Core - a set of nationwide education standards - as a launch point to talk about how poorly the US performs in education compared with other countries. "Common Core is out! It's out," he said at a rally in February."You have Norway, Sweden, Denmark, China, you have lots of places. You have some countries you've never even heard of are ahead of the USA," he continued, vowing to improve American education. She is pro-charter school, and is currently chair of St. Hope Public Schools, a charter school in Sacramento, California. She also reversed her previous stance on school vouchers, throwing her support behind a measured version of the program.Still, she made it clear she has great skepticism for overreaching voucher programs."When people talk about universal vouchers, first of all, I've never seen an economic model that actually made sense and laid that out in way that's sustainable," Rhee told Ed Week in 2012. "There are a lot of people out there who sort of believe, the free market, let the free market reign, the market will correct itself-give every kid a backpack with their money in it and let them choose wherever they want to go," she said. One of Trump's rumored picks for secretary of education disagrees with almost all of his policy proposals

Boitano</div></div>A potentially landmark decision from a California court earlier this week has garnered significant praise after a judge ruled against the state's teacher tenure laws, stating that they violate a child's right to <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> as guaranteed by the state's constitution.
The contentious California laws granted teachers tenure eligibility after only 18 months on the job and tied layoffs to seniority rather than merit - a system called "Last In, First Out" or LIFO. Most states have tenure reviews for teachers after two to three years.
The suit's plaintiffs - a group of nine students funded by a prominent Silicon Valley businessman - argued that California's tenure laws deprive all students of an equal education.
More specifically, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/11/us/california-teacher-tenure-laws-ruled-unconstitutional.html">The New York Times reports</a>, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rolf M. Treu determined that "the least effective teachers are disproportionately assigned to schools filled with low-income and minority students." According to The Times:
[Treu] agreed with the plaintiffs' argument that California's current laws make it impossible to remove the system's numerous low-performing and incompetent teachers, because the tenure system assures them a job essentially for life; that seniority rules requiring the newest teachers to be laid off first were harmful; and that granting tenure to teachers after only two years on the job was farcical, offering far too little time for a fair assessment of the teacher's skills.
The ruling has found support outside of California, perhaps <a href="http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/statement-us-secretary-education-arne-duncan-regarding-decision-vergara-v-califo">most notably in US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan</a>, who praised the decision in a statement:
For students in California and every other state, equal opportunities for learning must include the equal opportunity to be taught by a great teacher. The students who brought this lawsuit are, unfortunately, just nine out of millions of young people in America who are disadvantaged by laws, practices and systems that fail to identify and support our best teachers and match them with our neediest students. Today's court decision is a mandate to fix these problems. Together, we must work to increase public confidence in public education.
The New York Times editorial board also showed strong support for the decision in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/12/opinion/in-california-a-judge-takes-on-teacher-tenure.html">an editorial titled "A New Battle for Equal Education,"</a> writing that the decision "underscores a shameful problem that has cast a long shadow over the lives of children, not just in California but in the rest of the country as well."
The Times cites several examples of the persuasive uses of data and studies in the lawsuit, such as the "stupidity of a state law that makes teachers eligible for tenure after 18 months even though evidence shows that such a decision reasonably takes between three and five years."
Former <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/michelle-rhee-california-tenure-ruling-is-a-win-for-teachers-and-children/2014/06/11/65bff4e6-f182-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html">Washington, D.C. public schools </a><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/michelle-rhee-california-tenure-ruling-is-a-win-for-teachers-and-children/2014/06/11/65bff4e6-f182-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html">chancellor Michelle Rhee also lauded the decision</a> in a Washington Post op-ed.
"The case was built on the simple and undeniable premise that every child deserves equal access to a quality education - regardless of his or her race, Zip code or family circumstances. Since a great teacher is the most powerful factor inside a classroom in determining educational quality, equal access has got to mean access to great teachers," Rhee writes.
However, many believe that this ruling is an attack on teachers' rights. Prominent <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/06/11/does-tenure-protect-bad-teachers-or-good-schools/tenure-is-a-guarantee-of-due-process-to-prevent-capricious-firings">education historian Diane Ravitch criticized the California court's decision</a>, writing in The New York Times, "Tenure protects academic freedom. In the absence of tenure, teachers may be fired for any reason. Teachers may be fired if the principal doesn't like them or if they are experienced and become too expensive. Teachers may be fired for being outspoken."

There's A Lot Of Support For California Ruling Against Teacher Tenure Laws

This week, <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> non-profit The New Teacher Project (TNTP) released a report titled <a href="http://tntp.org/publications/view/retention-and-school-culture/shortchanged-the-hidden-costs-of-lockstep-teacher-pay">Shortchanged: The Hidden Costs of Lockstep Teacher Pay</a>. 
The report notes that 90% of U.S. school districts still use "lockstep pay," where teachers receive raises based on how long they have worked and whether they earn advanced degrees, regardless of their performance. 
The authors argue that these standardized pay scales are the wrong way to compensate teachers, because they result in low "early-career salaries," which stop talented young people from considering teaching. They also damage teacher retention and keep effective teachers out of high-need areas.<div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53c979b6eab8ea5330fb97f4-672-381/screen%20shot%202014-07-18%20at%203.46.34%20pm.png?maxX=800" border="0" alt="Screen Shot 2014 07 18 at 3.46.34 PM" width="800" style="line-height: 1.5em;" /><a href="http://tntp.org/assets/documents/TNTP_Shortchanged_2014.pdf">TNTP</a>A teacher starting out in 2013 would make, on average, $40,100, while someone starting in finance would make nearly 50% more. </div></div>Only 10% of the top third of college graduates believe teaching offers a competitive starting salary, and that it takes teachers twice as long to reach peak salaries as it does in other professions, according to the report. 
Since teachers are paid the same whether they work in high- or low-income schools, "great teachers who step up to the most urgent challenges see their hard work go unrewarded," the authors write. <div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53c97a296bb3f7746e86591e-713-429/screen%20shot%202014-07-18%20at%203.48.27%20pm.png" border="0" alt="Screen Shot 2014 07 18 at 3.48.27 PM" width="800" />TNTPTeacher salaries grow more slowly over time.</div></div>The report calls for schools to compensate teachers based on performance and offer bonuses for instructors at high-need schools and critical subjects.
Some schools have already implemented alternatives to the traditional teacher salary structure. 
At Achievement First, a group of charter schools in around around New York, teacher salaries and responsibilities increase in five stages. Under that system, a new teacher earns around $50,000 and continues to take professional development classes.
An advanced-level "role-model teacher" could earn $105,000, and be responsible for district-wide professional development programs and work with national experts.

Earlier this month, the Obama administration <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/07/excellent-educators-for-all_n_5562269.html">announced</a> an initiative called "Excellent Educators for All," which would tackle the issue of teacher equity and ensure that all students have equal access to "good" teachers.
Education reform-focused cities like Dallas, Newark, and Washington D.C. have already overhauled their retention and promotion systems. A <a href="http://tntp.org/assets/documents/TNTP_DCIrreplaceables_2012.pdf">2012 TNTP report</a> noted that when Washington D.C. changed to a more merit-based system of pay for teachers, it found that ineffective teachers left the district at twice the rate of highly effective ones.
There are still plenty of obstacles to reforming lockstep pay, including resistance from teachers' unions. This "one size fits all" approach to paying teachers was initially developed to ensure that educators were paid fairly and to motivate them to pursue advanced degrees, and reformers will have to keep those goals in mind.
Performance-based pay also relies heavily on student test scores, which bring their own set of challenges. A <a href="http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/education/story/2012-03-15/survey-teacher-pay-linked-to-test-scores/53554210/1">2013 survey </a>of 10,000 teachers found that only 26% believed state skills tests accurately reflected student achievement.
It's exciting to see small inroads being made, though. If America's education system ever hopes to compete with Finland's or South Korea's, we must improve the way we recruit and retain high-quality teachers.

Why Public Schools Need To Change The Way They Pay Teachers

Tan Tao Liang
Tan Tao Liang was known for his signature kick, a hop and kick a few times in a row, that you'd see a lot of at the end of The Invincible Kung Fu Legs. We couldn't find the one we were looking for. But here's a cool montage of his kicks and an interview with the man himself.
