She died before it was published in 2018. </li><li>The Golden State Killer is believed to be responsible for at least 13 murders and over 50 sexual assaults in '70s and '80s California.</li><li>McNamara's work with investigators helped bring the case to light. </li><li>"I'll Be Gone in the Dark" also focuses on a potential suspect in the rapes and murders — Joseph DeAngelo, who was arrested by law enforcement in 2018 after DNA reportedly linked him to the crimes.</li></ul><p>Little was known about the so-called Golden State Killer until very recently. </p><p>The criminal, who was also dubbed the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker, and the Visalia Ransacker, is believed to have killed at least 13 people and raped over 50 others in '70s and '80s California.</p><p>But until Michelle McNamara's landmark book "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" was published in 2018, the Golden State Killer (a moniker McNamara gave him) wasn't widely known to the general public.</p><p>McNamara died before the publication of her book, but a new documentary from HBO, also titled "I'll Be Gone in the Dark," brings new attention to her work and includes several major developments in the case.</p><p>Here's everything you need to know about the documentary, the Golden State Killer, and the quest to track him down. </p><p><div type="image" title="golden state killer composite sketches" height="1392" width="1856" msid="76634792" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The Golden State Killer was a murderer and rapist who terrorized Californian towns for over a decade</h2><p>Crimes later attributed to the Golden State Killer first began in 1974, in a California town called Visalia. Over a period of approximately two years, the small town was plagued by a burglar, who authorities said often left more valuable items in the home in favor of less expensive but more personal items like monogrammed cuff links or class rings.</p><p>The Visalia Ransacker, as he was called, would also frequently scatter women's clothing — including lingerie — across the home during his thefts, according to authorities.</p><p>But in 1976, experts believe the Ransacker moved from Visalia to the Sacramento's eastern area and progressed from theft to sexual assault and rape. Between 1976 to 1979, in areas surrounding Sacramento (like Contra Costa County, Citrus Heights, and Rancho Cordova) numerous women came forward to say they were sexually assaulted by a masked intruder. </p><p>Eventually, the East Area Rapist — as he became known in the media and communities — began attacking couples.</p><p><div type="image" title="i'll be gone in the dark hbo_edited 1" height="900" width="1200" msid="76634795" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Victims said he would spend a lot of time in their homes, scaring them with his presence even hours after an attack. Authorities believed he conducted extensive reconnaissance on the homes of victims and even unlocked doors and windows or pre-planted weapons before an attack.</p><p>After 1979, he disappeared from the Sacramento area, but a string of murders in southern California suggested he had moved on to a new community. He's suspected of murdering at least 13 people in southern California from 1979 to 1986, earning him a new moniker: "The Original Night Stalker."</p><p><div type="image" title="i'll be gone in the dark michelle mcnamara hbo" height="1080" width="1440" msid="76634797" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>McNamara brought the crimes of the Golden State Killer to light, first with an article for Los Angeles Magazine, and then with her book 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark'  </h2><p>McNamara, a true-crime writer who created the blog <keyword id="1605263" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="true-crime">True Crime</keyword> Diary, did extensive research on the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker throughout her career. She believed all the crimes had been committed by the same individual and gave him the name "The Golden State Killer." </p><p>In 2013, McNamara published an <a href="https://www.lamag.com/longform/in-the-footsteps-of-a-killer/">in-depth and gripping profile</a> of the crimes for Los Angeles Magazine, titled, "In the Footsteps of a Killer." The article, detailing the East Area rapes and the southern California killings, garnered significant attention for both McNamara and the Golden State Killer. </p><p>But McNamara's deep dive into the crimes didn't stop there. She continued researching and reporting on the case, eventually garnering a book deal from HarperCollins. McNamara also frequently worked with law enforcement, including now-retired detective Larry Crompton, and now-retired investigator Paul Holes, on the case, offering insights and potential leads. </p><p>In 2016, McNamara died suddenly, leaving behind her husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, and their young daughter Alice. Oswalt and some of McNamara's fellow true crime writers, however, recognized how invested she was in the case of the Golden State Killer and worked to publish McNamara's book "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" posthumously, in 2018. </p><p>The title of McNamara's book is a reference to something the Golden State Killer <a href="https://bookriot.com/suspect-arrested-in-golden-state-killer-case/">said to one of his victims after an attack</a>. Included in the six-part series are interviews with women who survived attacks by the Golden State Killer, some of whom are just now coming forward to tell their stories. </p><p>Oswalt and some of McNamara's former colleagues, including true-crime writer Paul Haynes, also feature prominently, as do detectives like Crompton and investigators like Holes who've also worked tirelessly on the case. </p><p>Even though McNamara's work brought the case a great deal of attention, and may have even helped police apprehend a suspect (more on that later), the series doesn't shy away from showing how deeply draining the research and writing was for McNamara. As one might suspect, combing through old police reports and graphic crime scene photos pushed her to the brink of exhaustion.</p><p>Ultimately, the series does an excellent job of highlighting just how important the case was to McNamara — and how easy it is to get drawn in by a search for a faceless and nameless killer. </p><p><div type="image" title="Joseph James DeAngelo golden state killer" height="1439" width="1919" msid="76634801" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The documentary also includes an important update about the case</h2><p>Just a few months after McNamara's book was published in 2018, police in Sacramento made a shocking announcement: After decades of dead ends, they'd finally arrested a suspect in connection to the Golden State Killer rapes and murders. </p><p>On April 24, 2018, 74-year-old <a href="https://www.insider.com/suspect-arrested-in-the-golden-state-killer-case-michelle-mcnamara-2018-4">Joseph James DeAngelo was taken into custody </a>after <a href="https://www.insider.com/golden-state-killer-caught-because-relatives-dna-online-2018-4">DNA evidence reportedly linked him to some of the crimes</a>, according to investigators.</p><p>DeAngelo has remained incarcerated since his arrest in 2018, and recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/15/us/golden-state-killer-death-penalty.html">reports suggest that he'll plead guilty to dozens of criminal charges</a> — including kidnapping and murder — later this month in order to avoid the death penalty.</p><p>While the most recent development in DeAngelo's case wasn't included in HBO's documentary, the series does focus on DeAngelo's life and potential connection to the crimes. Several of his family members were also interviewed in the show and expressed their sadness and disbelief at DeAngelo's case. </p><p><div type="image" title="i'll be gone in the dark book HBO" height="965" width="1286" msid="76634803" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>Critics have reacted positively to 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark' and its portrayal of McNamara</h2><p>Mike Hale of the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/25/arts/television/ill-be-gone-in-the-dark-review-michelle-mcnamara.html?login=smartlock&amp;auth=login-smartlocklock">New York Times praised director Liz Garbus' integration of McNamara's voice into the series</a>. </p><p>"She not only makes McNamara a presence, she also makes her the primary storyteller, through a host of ingenious — if not always wholly transparent — strategies," Hale wrote. We live in a society, in a world that is so fast-paced, and it doesn't really give a lot of breaks," Garbus continued. "We have our phones constantly wired into our brains. And that doesn't leave a lot of time for self-reflection." </p><p>"So is this like an outlet for our own demons and fear, that we're projecting and comforting ourselves, almost, by seeing it through somebody else's trauma? I don't know." </p><p>The director also suggested that the reason why there are so many female true crime fans could have to do with the way women are routinely the victims of violent crimes. </p><p>"Especially for women who are often victims of crime, or domestic violence, etc., it's a way to sort of look at something and feel like you can kind of control it — you can close the book, you can turn off the TV, when in real life, you don't have that power," Garbus said. </p><p>"I'll Be Gone in the Dark" premieres Sunday on HBO. "This is the first time I've been able to use 'I' writing this. Probably because there hasn't been much of an 'I' since the morning of April 21. There probably won't be for a while. Some are more worth a listen than others. </p><p>Podcasts like "Crime Junkie," "Man at the Window," and "Atlanta Monster" all dive deep into various controversial cases, including the Atlanta child murders from the late 1970s, or the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/us/golden-state-killer-joseph-deangelo.html">Golden State Killer's reign of terror in California that was only recently solved</a>. </p><p>Others, like "74 Seconds" and '"Somebody," focus on social justice issues like police brutality. Both podcasts examine the deaths of Black men — Philando Castile and Courtney Copeland, respectively — and the heartbreaking aftermath of the tragedies. </p><p>Here are seven true crime podcasts to listen to right now.</p><p><div type="image" title="Willie Mae Mathis, mother of Jefferey, an Atlanta Child Murders victim 1999 AP" height="1350" width="1800" msid="76735922" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>'Atlanta Monster' focuses on a series of child killings in Atlanta from 1979 to 1981</h2><p>Presented by Tenderfoot and iHeart Media, this engrossing podcast focuses on one of the most brutal strings of murders in Georgia's history: the <a href="https://www.insider.com/atlanta-monster-true-crime-podcast-child-murders-2018-1">Atlanta child murders</a>. From 1979 to 1981, at least 24 children, in addition to several adults and adolescents, were murdered. <a href="https://www.insider.com/atlanta-monster-true-crime-podcast-child-murders-2018-1">Most of the victims were young boys, and all of them were Black</a>.</p><p>In 1982, a young Black man named Wayne Williams was <a href="https://www.insider.com/atlanta-monster-true-crime-podcast-child-murders-2018-1">tried and convicted for the murder of two adults, and the Atlanta police department attributed many of the children's deaths to Williams as well</a>, although no specific charges regarding those cases were brought against him. </p><p>"Atlanta Monster" re-examines the crimes, as well as the police's response, which many people at the time criticized for being influenced by racial tensions. It's not an easy listen, but the podcast does an excellent job of highlighting a decades-old case that some people believe is still unsolved. </p><h2>'Crime Junkie' profiles a new murder, disappearance, or conspiracy each episode</h2><p>Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat host "Crime Junkie," a chilling yet totally bingeable podcast devoted to bringing fellow "crime junkies" their fix. Focusing on a new crime or conspiracy each week, Flowers and Prawat have covered cases like those of the <a href="https://crimejunkiepodcast.com/infamous-dc-sniper/">DC Sniper</a> and the <a href="https://crimejunkiepodcast.com/infamous-dexter-killer/">"Dexter" killer</a>, as well as mysterious deaths like those of <a href="https://crimejunkiepodcast.com/mysterious-death-yuba-county-five/">the Yuba County Five</a>. </p><p>The podcast also does an excellent job of focusing on the cases of missing and murdered people of color, especially Black women. While the title refers to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/facebook-denies-censoring-philando-castile-video-2016-7">video of Castile's death</a>, the podcast as a whole examines disturbing instances of police brutality against all Black people, especially Black men. </p><p>And though much of the podcast is focused on Castile's death and the ramifications it had for the Black Lives Matter movement, it also focuses on his life — and the multi-faceted person he was before his death at the hands of police. </p><h2>'Somebody' focuses on the death of Courtney Copeland, a Black man who was shot outside of a Chicago police station</h2><p>Copeland's mother Shapearl Faulkner-Wells is the primary storyteller in "Somebody," which follows Faulkner-Wells as she relives her <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/man-shot-22-year-old-police-station-25th-district/1230626/">son's 2016 murder</a>. Listening to a grieving mother discuss the factors that led to her son's death, as well as her fight to make sure his death wasn't brushed under the rug, is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring. </p><p>Overall, "Somebody" is a relevant and engrossing exploration of violence against Black men and the ways in which we're all complicit. </p><p><div type="image" title="golden state killer composite sketches" height="1392" width="1856" msid="76735924" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The <keyword id="5541002" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Golden-State-Killer">Golden State Killer</keyword>'s decade-long reign of terror is brought to life in 'Man in the Window'</h2><p>Responsible for over <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article243868517.html">50 rapes and 13 known murders from 1979 to 1986</a>, the Golden State Killer was one of California's most prolific serial murderers. He's also the subject of numerous documentaries, podcasts, and books, including HBO's new show "I'll Be Gone in the Dark," which is based on Michelle McNamara's book of the same name. </p><p>And those who want to learn more about the killer's twisted crimes should definitely check out "Man in the Window," a joint podcast from the LA Times and Wondery. Retracing the Golden State Killer's crimes case by case, the podcast paints a vivid portrait of past crimes and provides important context for listeners.</p><p>Given that 74-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article243868517.html">recently pleaded guilty to 13 counts of murder,</a> the podcast makes an excellent refresher on the case or introduction for those who aren't familiar with it. </p><h2>'This Land' profiles two murders while also diving deep into issues related to Native American oppression</h2><p>The assassination of a Cherokee leader is just the jumping-off point of "This Land," which deftly explores the numerous other issues faced by the Cherokee Nation and other Native Americans in the US. A separate murder case nearly two centuries later, as well as political scheming and the systemic oppression of Native people, are also touched upon in this podcast. </p><p>Journalist Rebecca Nagle, herself a member of the Cherokee Nation, skillfully weaves together the two cases and makes clear just how wide-ranging the ramifications are. </p><h2>Those who can't get enough of grifters, cheaters, and scammers should definitely check out 'Scam Goddess'</h2><p>Focusing on true crime stories, but without the death and violence that normally comes along with it, "<a href="https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-scam-goddess-49639260/">Scam Goddess</a>" is a refreshingly light-hearted entry into the genre that still packs a punch.
