I couldn't immediately bring myself to watch "Framing Britney Spears," the New York Times documentary about the pop singer and a culture that's steeped in sexism, knowing that I had lived through a version of it already as a young woman.Now <a href="https://www.insider.com/justin-timberlake-britney-spears-apology-janet-jackson-2021-2">Justin Timberlake has apologized</a> to Spears and Janet Jackson; Pitbull is yelling "Free Britney!" at a press event; and <a href="https://www.insider.com/framing-britney-spears-documentary-justin-timberlake-backlash-2021-2">"I Am Sorry Britney" trended</a> on Twitter the weekend of the doc's premiere.But those of us, especially women, who grew up idolizing Spears and witnessed her public destruction throughout our teenage years, are far from satisfied.It's no longer "cool" to mock Spears or her legion of one-time tween fans. We have years of societal awareness, feminist activism such as the #MeToo movement, and documentaries like the recent "Framing Britney Spears" to thank for that. But when it comes to moving forward, there's simply too many hollow admissions of culpability and not enough unpacking of exactly how we got to this point. If we zoom in on Spears' Hollywood career, it's not hard to draw a line between misogynistic teen movie franchises like "American Pie," which captured how society treated young girls at the time, and the scornful treatment of Spears along with her 2002 movie "Crossroads," the first screenplay written by Shonda Rhimes.<h2>In the early 2000s, casual <keyword id="1420030" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Misogyny">misogyny</keyword> was baked into our culture. Nowhere is that more apparent than 'American Pie.'</h2><div type="image" title="American Pie, Jim" height="615" width="820" msid="81074407" hostid="261"></div>"American Pie," the 1999 raunchy R-rated teen movie, felt like an inescapable rite of passage for kids like me who entered high school in the early 2000s. You'd have thought that movie reinvented comedy and sex at the same time, the way it was praised to high hell.The movie follows four high school boys, who make a pact to lose their virginity by the end of their senior year with the rule that it has to be "valid, consensual sex - no prostitutes."But the only takeaway to be found in "American Pie" (other than the apparent timelessness of potty humor) is that teenage boys are not only desperate for sex, but that they're owed that sex from hesitant young women, who need to be coerced or tricked into it.The only two girls in the movie who are overly enthusiastic about sex (Alyson Hannigan and Natasha Lyonne's characters) are portrayed as annoying or undesirable - and certainly not the first choice for any of the boys' pursuits."American Pie" is credited with reviving the sex-comedy genre, which you can see reflected in subsequent popular movies like "EuroTrip," "Van Wilder," and to a less-harmful degree in 2007's "Superbad."The same year "American Pie" premiered, spawning its own mega-franchise of movies, Spears' first album "...Baby One More Time" debuted. She was only 18 years old, but <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131029201446/http://www.nme.com/reviews/britney-spears/853">one male critic at the time</a> was happy to label the former "Mickey Mouse Club" star's aesthetic as "kindergarten cutesiepie cack" while telling her to "grow up, girl. Quick!"Another male critic called the music studio where "...Baby One More Time" was recorded <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131211231544/http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/baby-one-more-time-20030113">a "Lolita-pop doll house,"</a> and said the hit single was good at "effectively transforming this ex-Mouseketeer born in a tiny Louisiana town into a growling jailbait dynamo."And that's just a peek into the treatment of Spears' music. When she dared to dip a toe into Hollywood, the scorn only deepened.<h2>'Crossroads' was a coming-of-age movie about female friendship, at a time when Spears was also growing into her own. Critics hated it.</h2><div type="image" title="crossroads3" height="758" width="1010" msid="81074411" hostid="261"></div>"Crossroads" premiered in 2002, just a few years after "American Pie." The movie followed Spears' character, Lucy, as she rekindled childhood friendships, fell in love, and had sex for the first time along with writing and performing music."Crossroads" was almost immediately banished to the discount-DVD bin, dismissed by critics and audiences alike as cheesy and hollow.One male movie critic, Mick LaSalle, happened to <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/A-Juicy-American-Pie-Teen-comedy-goes-beyond-2919967.php">review both "American Pie" in 1999</a> and then <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/FILM-CLIPS-Also-opening-today-2872903.php">"Crossroads" in 2002</a>.LaSalle revered the former for its "warm spirit and respect for the characters." He found one scene, where Jason Biggs' character secretly films a foreign exchange student undressing in his room, and intentionally broadcasting the live feed to his friends (who in turn accidentally send the link to their entire student body) as "a long, delightful and embarrassing scene."There's no mention in the review of the young woman being violated, nor of the fact that she is somehow the sole person punished for the "event" when she's sent back to Europe offscreen.<div type="image" title="Mimi Kit Lucy Ben in car Crossroads 2002 movie Britney Spears MTV Films Paramount Pictures " height="1094" width="1458" msid="81074416" hostid="261"></div>But LaSalle <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/FILM-CLIPS-Also-opening-today-2872903.php">found "Crossroads" fascinating</a>, not for its exploration of teenage girlhood and sex, but because "there has always been a disconnect between Spears' offstage and onstage personae. When not singing, she cultivates the image of a scantily clad but chaste young lady. But onstage she acts like every sailor's pal when the fleet's in."The Razzies, a parody awards show that honors the "worst" in cinema, introduced a new category called the "Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie" and promptly nominated "Crossroads" for the trophy. Spears went on to win the "Worst Actress" award that year. Managing to become even more tone-deaf in retrospect, the Razzies also nominated Rhimes for worst screenplay, failing to see the <a href="https://www.insider.com/bridgerton-details-you-missed-easter-eggs-season-one-2020-12">"Bridgerton" executive producer</a> and "Grey's Anatomy" creator's trademark shine in her first-ever movie script. Although the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1112549-crossroads">Rotten Tomatoes score for "Crossroads"</a> sits depressingly low, after rewatching it a couple of years ago when it was available online (now you can't find the movie available to rent or stream on any major platform) I found it holds up against my glowing memories.The movie still shimmers with that Rhimes quality that's also apparent in her later works, such as "Grey's," "How To Get Away with Murder" and "Scandal." Like all of Rhimes' writing, "Crossroads" presents women's friendships and ambitions as meaningful and worthy of the Hollywood treatment."Crossroads" was paired with Spears' 2001 hit, "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," a ballad in which Spears quite literally asks for people to leave her alone while she tries to sort out what growing up in the spotlight means. Part of the lyrics reads, "All I need is time/A moment that is mine/While I'm in between."In the movie, Spear's character reads the lyrics aloud to the man she's falling in love with. By the end of the film, she's singing it on stage during an audition for a record company, announcing herself as an adult ready to take on the world in her own way and in her own time. <h2>Not enough people were listening to Spears then, but now millennials are coming into their own power and the tides are shifting.</h2><div type="image" title="britney spears snake dance" height="1451" width="1935" msid="81074422" hostid="261"></div>For many millennials, Spears was a beacon of unattainable cool. Listening to her albums made us feel powerful, with anthems like "Stronger" and "Overprotected" telling us we could forge our own paths. Imagine the confusion and hurt so many young people felt when we saw the world tearing Spears down, saying that she wasn't enough and she was too much all at once.Now Spears is <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-mental-health-jokes-today-shed-have-it-worse-2021-2">no longer the butt of the joke</a>, nor is she in the center of a media circus 24-7. The world has largely settled into the realization that what was happening to Spears at such a young age was anything but normal. We saw that through paparazzi photos of her, showing <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-mental-health-jokes-today-shed-have-it-worse-2021-2">her mental health issues</a>, and later the <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-father-coconservator-estate-judge-ruling-2021-2">conservatory legal situation</a> with her father, which grants him and a lawyer control over the singer's financial and personal assets.What's different now is that Gen-Xers and millennials, who grew up with Spears, "Crossroads," and "American Pie" are now in positions of power to speak out against misogynistic culture and how it bleeds into what we consume. In the days after "Framing Britney Spears" premiered, when Twitter was suddenly alight with compassion for the pop star, I saw a lot of statements akin to "we were all complicit" coming from people who were much older than me in the early 2000s.<div type="image" title="britney spears" height="603" width="804" msid="81074428" hostid="261"></div>That kind of passive admission of wrongdoing is frankly insulting to those of us who were literal children at the time and knew better than to participate in Spears' tear down. It's even more insulting to hear the "we were all complicit" line from people who absolutely had the capacity to know the damage they were inflicting and indulged in it anyway. I'm not a girl anymore and neither are the then-young Spears' fans who knew the public's treatment of her was wrong. Now we're fighting for our voices to be heard, whether its with bylines of our own at the same publications that once gleefully bashed Spears, or in the same Hollywood systems that once glorified "American Pie."I'm particularly grateful for creators like Issa Rae, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michaela Coel, and Emerald Fennell, millennial storytellers who are writing incredibly rich, funny, creative and thoughtful TV shows and movies that reflect the complicated internal lives of women, particularly in the face of continual sexism and racism. In an <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2021/01/promising-young-woman-ending-emerald-fennell-explains.html">interview with Vulture's Angelica Jade Bastién</a>, Fennell (the writer-director of 2020's "Promising Young Woman," which centers on woman who pretends to be drunk only to lure men home with her) spoke about her obsession with turning the idea of being feminine on its head."This idea that just because you love Britney Spears doesn't mean you couldn't cut someone's face off," she said. "Just because you wear pink doesn't mean you're not filled with murderous rage."Our rage is ready for its time in the spotlight. The reckoning is only just getting started.

While full of breathtaking visuals, a few truly shocking moments, and another Grammy-worthy soundtrack from Ludwig Göransson, the sequel wastes a decent portion of its lengthy two-hour-and-41-minute runtime on setting up spin-offs when it should've been spending time with a few important characters. <h2>A beautiful exploration of grief and loss with an Oscar-worthy performance from Angela Bassett</h2><div type="image" title="Lupita Nyong'o in &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.&quot;" height="1186" width="2794" msid="95386302" hostid="261" sizebytes="34728"></div>Coogler does an exemplary job of capturing how we grieve and mourn our loved ones by showcasing the vastly different ways in which T'Challa's loss has affected everyone in his life – his mother Ramonda, his little sister Shuri, his partner Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), and his close confidant and general, Okoye (Danai Gurira). Some have moved forward while others struggle to cope with their grief.Told largely through the eyes of Shuri, "Wakanda Forever" focuses on the princess' avoidance of her grief. Wakanda's brightest would rather bury herself in her lab work than face her pain. <div type="image" title="Letitia Wright in &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.&quot;" height="1670" width="4000" msid="95386304" hostid="261" sizebytes="109250"></div>Angela Bassett steals every single scene as a queen who, despite losing a son and a husband in the past two films, is leading a nation and fending off potential threats while never missing a beat and looking flawlessly regal.The emotion in her line delivery is palpable, whether she's tersely cutting down foreign governments at a United Nations meeting or gently trying to break down her daughter's walls one-on-one. Winston Duke returns as fan-favorite M'Baku, bringing some much-needed levity to the movie's sometimes depressing tone and offering a softer side as counsel to Ramonda's family. <div type="image" title="Winston Duke as M'Baku in &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.&quot;" height="2000" width="3000" msid="95386306" hostid="261" sizebytes="196402"></div>Though M'Baku's in the sequel more than the original, men mostly take a backseat in this film.One of the sequel's greatest strengths is showcasing its Wakandan women front and center in nearly every scene, effectively giving its female characters a bigger spotlight than in any previous Marvel movie. It even introduces a few new leads: Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominque Thorne), a 19-year-old genius who gives off a Peter Parker-like charm, and quirky and fearless Dora Milaje warrior Aneka (Michaela Coel).<h2>Namor's one of the MCU's best antiheroes in years, but the movie doesn't explore his people enough</h2><div type="image" title="Tenoch Huerta as Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" height="3006" width="4000" msid="95386307" hostid="261" sizebytes="389984"></div>If the guy your mom warned you about was a Marvel villain, it would be Namor.Tenoch Huerta delivers the film's second-best performance as one of Marvel's oldest characters, Namor, who dates back to 1939. In "Wakanda Forever," Marvel changes up the ancestry of the character. No longer from Atlantis – likely to differentiate him from DC's Aquaman – here, he's the king of Maya descendants, called Talokanil, with a tragic backstory. Throughout the movie, Namor effortlessly flips the switch from a charming and suave God to a fearsome antihero, callously dishing out ultimatums with a stare so severe it pierces your soul.<div type="image" title="Tenoch Huerta and Angela Bassett in Black Panther Wakanda Forever" height="1186" width="2880" msid="95386308" hostid="261" sizebytes="58774"></div>By the end, Namor's shocking actions make him an obvious contender for the new top MCU baddie since Thanos was obliterated. His underwater home of Talokan is introduced in one of the film's most gorgeous sequences. Unfortunately, "Wakanda Forever" doesn't spend time fleshing out any characters associated with Namor, apart from vaguely introducing two of his warriors: Attuma (Alex Livinallli) and Namora (Mabel Cadena). <div type="image" title="Talokanil in &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever&quot;" height="1670" width="4000" msid="95386309" hostid="261" sizebytes="191312"></div>By pitting the Wakandans and Talokanil against one another for a large chunk of the film, Coogler delivers a larger, heartbreaking message about the dynamic between Black and brown communities and a call for <a href="https://laul.org/black-and-brown-unity-is-needed/">unity</a>. But it would've held a deeper meaning if the film explored Namor's people more in-depth.Instead, because the viewer feels little to no attachment to most of these characters, the film perpetuates a harmful stereotype that those of <a href="https://mediasmarts.ca/digital-media-literacy/media-issues/diversity-media/indigenous-people/common-portrayals-indigenous-people">indigenous descent are aggressive and dangerous warriors</a>.<h2>Too much of the film's runtime is spent setting up future Marvel projects</h2><div type="image" title="Riri Williams in &quot;Black Panther: Wakanda Forever&quot;" height="1188" width="2664" msid="95386311" hostid="261" sizebytes="39202"></div>"Wakanda Forever" is best when it's not an ad for Marvel's various shows and movies. The sequel spends so much time setting up future Marvel storylines that it detracts from its emotional core.The movie constantly competes with being a send-off for Boseman, an introduction to Namor's underwater realm, a backdoor pilot for Disney+'s "Ironheart" series, and a precursor to Marvel's "Thunderbolts" and possibly "Armor Wars" movies.While Thorne's presence as Ironheart is enjoyable here, we didn't really need her, CIA agent Everett Ross, and at least one other surprise cameo. Their combined screen time could've been used to better flesh out Namor's people.The Marvel sequels and movies are in danger of becoming little more than commercials for future releases instead of standalone films that work on their own. "Black Panther" was special because it told a strong standalone story focused on father-son dynamics. While the sequel ruminates on the mother-daughter bond between Shuri and Ramonda, that message gets muddled in its (at least) three other subplots. But while "Wakanda Forever" is not better than its predecessor, it's a worthwhile return to Wakanda. As the MCU closes its chapter on its fourth phase of films, the lesson here is that less is more. <h2>Grade: B+</h2>

Gavin Newsom on Thursday, categorizing stealthing as a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-02-08/california-bill-classify-non-consensual-condom-removal-sexual-battery">form of sexual battery</a> and allow survivors to sue for emotional and physical damages.The law amends the state definition of sexual battery to include a person "who causes contact between a penis, from which a condom has been removed, and the intimate part of another who did not verbally consent to the condom being removed." Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) told the Los Angeles Times that, while stealthing has been <a href="https://nypost.com/2017/05/18/i-stealth-all-the-time-because-it-feels-better-without-a-condom/">an existing problem,</a> it has gone unrecognized legally because of its covert nature. "It's been going on for awhile. There's blogs online that are helping individuals, teaching them how to get away with this," Garcia told the Los Angeles Times. "We need to be able to call it what it is in order to be able to deter behavior."<h2>Stealthing has been a problem for years, but is only just being discussed in the mainstream</h2><div type="image" title="I May Destroy You stealthing" height="675" width="900" msid="80800192" hostid="261"></div>Stealthing has gotten more attention in recent years because of its increased visibility on popular shows like <a href="https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/what-is-stealthing">"I May Destroy You."</a> Written by Michaela Coel, the show was lauded for addressing <a href="https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/love-sex/sex/a9881458/stealthing-interview-highlights-consent-issues/">less recognized instances of sexual assault</a> like stealthing as what they are: assault. However, stealthing has existed for years with little recognition as a growing problem. A 2017 <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2954726">report published in the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law</a> found stealthing is a trend in <keyword id="46530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="sexual-assault" source="Orion">sexual assault</keyword> that is on the rise, as <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329926736_Non-consensual_condom_removal_reported_by_patients_at_a_sexual_health_clinic_in_Melbourne_Australia">more people report it has happened to them</a>. <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329926736_Non-consensual_condom_removal_reported_by_patients_at_a_sexual_health_clinic_in_Melbourne_Australia">A 2018 study by researchers at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre</a> found one in three women and one in five men who have sex with men report being stealthed during sex. "Survivors [of stealthing] describe non-consensual condom removal as a threat to their bodily agency and as a dignitary harm," Columbia report author Alexandra Brodsky <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/love-sex/stealthing-men-remove-condoms-sex-without-consent-during-mid-coitus-a7700906.html">told the Independent in 2017</a>. "'You have no right to make your own sexual decisions,' they are told. 'You are not worthy of my consideration.'"

LOOKING BACK: Occupy Wall Street protesters had big goals. Their movement started with a single striking image and ended with a 60-day takeover of lower Manhattan that spawned similar efforts across the US and around the world. Ten years later, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/occupy-wall-street-10-years-later-2021-9">Insider talked to participants and observers of the movement about its legacy</a>.Here's a peek at the massive story:Income inequality remains a problem: Occupiers helped make the language of the 99% the lingua franca of the American left. But inequality very much remains. The growing gap was highlighted by the split screen of a pandemic-induced economic crisis that saw tens of millions of Americans struggle - some to this day - while others amassed staggering sums.<ul><li>Failing to agree on demands helped fuel these struggles: "​​So we came up with 1%, 99% - we came up with a few slogans. But we never came up with one demand. And I think that was the one big failure of Occupy Wall Street, despite the fact that we politicized a whole generation of people," said Kalle Lasn, one of the original organizers of Occupy Wall Street.</li></ul>Going from occupying to Occupy posed some major challenges: Protesters involved early on describe a loose, committed group that barely took up Zuccotti Park. The attention they gained soon brought in more people, money, and even celebrity speakers.<ul><li>Key quote: "When we had nothing, people were much nicer to each other. But then, when we had money all of a sudden, there was a discussion of maybe renting a space instead of occupying the space.
