Auto Expo, the bi-annual auto event in India, is starting from February 5, and thanks to its rising popularity, it’s all set to launch a record number of products. 
 
The vehicles to be launched in this year’s Auto Expo include 85 passenger cars, utility vehicles, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles. In comparison to the last show, the number has grown over one-fifth, while it’s doubled if we see the data of 2012. 
 The organisers, <keyword id="82374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Society-of-Indian-Automobile-Manufacturers">Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers</keyword> (<keyword id="108827" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SIAM">SIAM</keyword>), is expecting a daily crowd of 1,00,000 people on an average, making it the biggest show among all auto shows that happen around the globe. 
 Out of all these impending launches, the one that’s been the most awaited is that of <keyword id="2776768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vitara-Brezza">Vitara Brezza</keyword>, from Maruti Suzuki. The country's largest car maker would be making the global premiere of the compact sport-utility vehicle, in the presence of <keyword id="3058572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="T-Suzuki">T Suzuki</keyword>, the president of Maruti's Japanese parent Suzuki Motor. 
 Other top executives expected to grace the auto show include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Asia Pacific COO <keyword id="1131020" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Michael-Manley">Michael Manley</keyword>, Jaguar Land Rover CEO <keyword id="224588" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ralf-Speth">Ralf Speth</keyword> and Isuzu Chairman <keyword id="2790078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hiroyasu-Miura">Hiroyasu Miura</keyword>. 
 
If the industry sources are to be believed, Maruti will also showcasing Ignis, which is a compact car with the design language of an SUV. Ignis is reported to take on Renault's Kwid, which has been garnering praises ever since its launch. 
 
Renault, on the other hand, would be launching two more versions of Kwid, one being a clutchless AMT version and the other with a 1-litre engine. The French car maker wants to take the position of Alto, which is Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling small car. Reportedly, Renault would also launch an upgraded version of its popular SUV Duster. 
 
Chrysler, the American automobile manufacturer would be stepping in the country for the first time, with Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. Tata's Nexon, Honda's BR-V, Datsun's redi-Go, Mercedes GLC unnamed global SUV and Tivoli from Mahindra &amp; Mahindra's South Korean subsidiary Ssangyong would also see the light of the day at the show. Hyundai’s Tucson, Toyota’s new Innova and M&amp;M's new Quanto are also in line to be unveiled. 
 
Cars to be launched under the small car and sedan segments include General Motors’ upgraded version of the Beat small car and Cruze, a new premium sedan, Fiat’s Tipo, Volkswagen’s entry-level sedan based on its already existing Polo, and Tata Motors’ sedan Sway. 
In the luxury segment, Tata JLR would be bringing out the new sports saloon Jaguar XE and SUV F-Pace. Audi will be taking the covers off the new R8, Audi Prologue concept and the Audi A8 L.

Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee <a href="https://twitter.com/MarshaBlackburn/status/1557077191963312129">warned on Fox News</a> that if the FBI can do this to Trump, "they can do it to you."Republicans "across the board" are viewing this as an abuse of power, which only energizes them to vote, said Ron Bonjean, a former spokesperson for Republican leaders in the House and Senate."It's highly unlikely the raid detracts from suburban voter enthusiasm choosing the GOP because they are [more] motivated by inflation and the high cost of living than what's going on with Trump," he said.Most voters will base their decisions on issues that directly affect their lives and Democratic performance since January 2021, said Eric Schultz, deputy White House press secretary during the Obama administration.But Republicans hoping to distract from Democratic wins in recent weeks could go too far, given that part of President Joe Biden's victory was due to "the electorate's exhaustion with Trump's recklessness," he said."I don't think most people want to return to a time when the country was on edge at all times given his no-holds-barred approach to being in office," Schultz said. Douglas Heye, former RNC communications director, said Republicans should be concerned that "defund the police" comments from the "more extreme Republican members takes away from the anti-crime message that had benefited them and also threatens to distract from inflation, which is hurting Democrats."<h2>'A hit job'</h2>These responses are emerging, even before all the details are known about the cause of the search. Bonjean said more transparency is needed into why this move from the FBI was necessary."Without any insight into this investigation, the raid allows Trump and his allies to frame it as a hit job by the Biden Administration in order to keep him from running again," he said. But such blind support for Trump is what's troubling, said Jim Manley, a longtime aide to the late former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid."I have no idea what's going on here, nor do Republicans," he said. "And yet they've decided to go all in with Trump, and that doesn't bode well for not only the nation as a whole but also for Congress over the next two years."

But unionization of politics is only happening on one half of the aisle."I don't see this happening on the Republican side," said Michael Ahrens, a former communications director at the Republican National Committee.Unions advocate for benefits and working conditions for their members. In addition to representing employees in disputes with their managers, unions often fight for pay standards, hourly working limits and overtime, and rules about vacations and breaks.At the DNC, union spokesperson Lucas Acosta told Insider the union hoped to enshrine equal pay and flexible working conditions in their ultimate contract.<div type="image" title="Jaime Harrison" height="723" width="1024" msid="88720974" hostid="261"></div>But Republican operatives told Insider that they saw these kinds of union-won concessions as incompatible with the realities of the political industry, particularly campaigns. Bush, Powell became the highest ranking Black official in Washington before the election of Democrat President Barack Obama. Powell was a lifelong Republican who left the party after the attempted insurrection of January 6. And as the son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was the highest ranking Caribbean-American official before the election of Vice President Kamala Harris - whose father hails from the same island. This week, in commemoration of Powell as a trailblazer, Black-immigrant communities gave balanced accounts of honoring Powell's accomplishments but also recognizing his record in some of the most powerful positions in the US government. <h2>Prominent Caribbean-American leaders and public figures shared their reflections </h2>Over the years Powell has stayed connected to his Jamaican roots, returning to the Caribbean nation at the request of then Prime Minister Michael Manley after the Gulf War in 1992. The European Union is pushing for vehicle electrification after publishing legislation last year to <a href="http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20180911IPR13114/more-electric-cars-on-eu-roads-by-2030">require 20% of sales revenue from carmakers to come from full-electric vehicles, or "Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles" by 2025. That target is set to rise to 40% of sales by 2030. </a>"The auto industry can't sit still, it's impossible," said Larry Slaughter, executive vice chairman at Bank of America, at a recent mid-year M&amp;A roundtable event in London. It's also a sign that CEOs are reacting to changes in the market. The electric vehicle (EV) market could be worth as much as $356.5 billion by 2023, <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/press-release/electric-vehicle-market-outlook-2019-segmentation-by-electric-vehicle-ev-battery-analysis-charging-station-infrastructure-trends-growth-trends-and-forecast-to-2023-2019-03-19">according to MarketWatch research.</a>As a result, M&amp;A and strategic moves into the space are increasingly likely. A failure to do so could leave automakers high and dry as major players snap up lithium ⁠- the element behind EV batteries ⁠- assets and boost market share in the EV industry. One example of the need to scale was last month's move by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fca-starts-nissan-renault-merger-talks-to-spark-electric-vehicles?r=US&amp;IR=T">Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to form the world's third largest automaker in a deal with Nissan and Renault. </a>The deal ultimately fell through but the attempted merger's existence came from the automakers' need to boost their presence in the EV space and was a sign of the market's electrification imperative.The company's <a href="https://www.fcagroup.com/en-US/media_center/fca_press_release/FiatDocuments/2019/may/FCA_SUBMITS_PROPOSAL_FOR_A_TRANSFORMATIVE_MERGER_WITH_GROUPE_RENAULT.pdf">press release</a> at the time noted "the need to take bold decisions to capture at scale the opportunities created by the transformation of the auto industry in areas like connectivity, electrification and autonomous driving."It's part of a broader swathe of dealmaking with carmakers acutely aware of the need to scale up to survive which comes at a positive time for the M&amp;A market. "CEO confidence is high, and M&amp;A is a confidence market notwithstanding geopolitics‎," Eamon Brabazon, co-head of EMEA M&amp;A at Bank of America, said at the roundtable event.A Bank of America note from the end of May noted that the failure of the FCA deal had sparked a conversation within the industry about electrification. "As production volumes continue to increase ... working capital and capacity investment could become a pressure point for smaller local suppliers, and particularly those lacking adequate liquidity," the report's authors, John Murphy, Aileen Smith, Yarden Amsalem, and Gwen Yucong Shi, said. "In addition, R&amp;D and investment in technology will likely increase as industry participants seek to leverage ongoing trends (electrification, autonomy, connectivity, etc.), for which scale will be necessary to effectively spread this potential cost burden."European legislation and geopolitical pressures were also behind the recent move by <a href="https://northvolt.com/northvolt-completes-equity-capital-raise-to-enable-europes-first-homegrown-gigafactories-for-lithium-ion-batteries/">Volkswagen and BMW to sign an equity finance deal with Swedish green lithium battery producer Northvolt with funding from Goldman Sachs</a>. The deal was a sign of the additional importance of both electrification to European manufacturers. More importantly, it highlighted the need for a guaranteed European supplier of batteries for electric vehicles to escape ongoing geopolitical rows between the US and China. Partners are picked every two-years during an extremely intense and secretive selection process.
In 2012, the bank tapped only 70 partners compared to 110 in the previous cycle. The size of the partner class isn't pre-dictated, though. However, it usually tends to be between 1.5 and 1.9% of the full-time employee population at the firm.
This morning, CEO Lloyd Blankfein and president/COO Gary Cohn personally called folks at their desks to let them know they've been made a partner.

The attack in Ottawa last month by a lone gunman, who killed a Canadian soldier and stormed parliament, seems likely to make matters worse. Although there is still uncertainty about the motives of the gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau--possibly a deranged outcast, possibly a religious extremist--the United States is reviewing security along the 5,525-mile (8,890km) line which separates the two countries (including the Alaskan land border).
After meeting his Canadian counterpart in Ottawa in the wake of the attacks, John Kerry, the United States secretary of state, was euphemistic but firm about the need to tighten up. He voiced confidence that the two countries could come up with "some tweaks, some changes, some additions that will promote even greater security than we have today."
It is debatable whether more security on what Senator John McCain recently called the "porous" northern border really will make Americans much safer from terrorism. But it seems hard for politicians to shake off the habit of Canada-bashing. Both Mr McCain and Hillary Clinton (in 2004) have stated, wrongly, that the 9/11 terrorists entered American territory through Canada. An article on the politico.com website last month (before the Ottawa shootings) had the headline: "Fear Canada: the real terrorist threat next door".
What is more certain is that "tweaks and changes" will impede economic exchanges between two countries who are each others' largest trading partners; and they may further fray social relations between once-friendly neighbours. Nik Nanos, a pollster who has tracked cross-border attitudes for a decade, says Canadians and Americans still like each other but have lost enthusiasm for further co-operation, most notably on terrorism.

Unlike the turbulent border with Mexico, the northern frontier usually gets little attention in the United States. It "just doesn't squeak as loud as the southern border," says Paul Frazer, a consultant on diplomatic affairs. Jeh Johnson, homeland-security secretary in the United States, gave a speech on "Border Security in the 21st Century" last month in which the only allusions to Canada were about the 1920s.
Illegal immigration, which haunts American relations with Mexico, is less of a concern in Canada's case. Of the 420,789 people apprehended by America's border patrol in 2013, 98% were caught on the country's south-western edge. On the northern side, guns and drugs are the big worry, says Jose Acosta, an American patrol officer who knows both frontiers and now works near Abbotsford, British Columbia. "We have Ecstasy, meth and marijuana coming south," he says. "Canada gets illegal aliens and guns going north." Mr Acosta often sees guns and drugs hidden in vehicles or on persons heading into Canada. But for anyone who knows the southern border, "it's pretty quiet here."
Still, comparisons with Mexico can understate the difficulty of policing a line which runs through remote spots like the hills of Montana and Alberta (pictured) and four Great Lakes. There has been a rise in security measures since 2001. The number of American border agents looking atCanada seems paltry, at about 2,200, compared with 18,600 dealing with Mexico; but the former figure was only 340 in 2001.
Since that time the United States has also added aircraft with sensor arrays, thermal cameras, video surveillance and unmanned aircraft to watch remoter areas. Aaron Heitke, deputy chief patrol agent in Montana, says that when he started 13 years ago his main item of equipment was binoculars. Now, in addition to his weapon, he has a radiation detector, night goggles and thermal imaging. Perfect security is impossible. Ross Finlayson, a member of a globe-trotting club, trekked through wild terrain from Montana to Canada last summer, bringing a passport and some anti-bear spray. Neither proved necessary.
Canada has assuaged some American concerns--by arming 5,685 customs officers; agreeing to joint patrols on the Great Lakes; and helping to form teams that include coast guards, border agencies and police from both countries. By one estimate, Canada spent an additional C$92 billion ($77 billion) on security in the ten years after 9/11. On November 4th it announced a new surveillance web, with radar, ground sensors and thermal radiation detectors, along 700km of the border.
Yet while the United States sees the border through the lens of security, Canada thinks of bilateral trade worth $2 billion a day. Businesses of all kinds moan that stringent procedures depress activity. Costs rise when lorries have to queue for hours to be inspected several times over.

The near-quadrupling of North American trade in the first 20 years of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement largely concerned the United States and Mexico. (The value of United States trade with Canada tripled over the period, while that with Mexico grew more than sixfold.)
In the wake of the Ottawa shooting, Canadian businesses fear an overreaction, says John Manley, who heads a group representing the country's largest firms. A shopping centre on Cornwall Island in the Canadian bit of Akwesasne, a piece of land set aside for the Mohawk people, shows how changing regimes harm small businesses. When the Mohawks objected to the arming of Canadian guards, Canada moved a customs post north to the mainland. This left the mall in no-man's-land. Travellers from the United States are now told not to stop until they reach Canadian customs. The change has cost the mall's sports store C$50,000 a year and has made some units unrentable.
Canada and the United States have made periodic efforts to ease the flow of goods and people: some cargo clearance has been moved away from the border, and American customs officers now work in some Canadian airports. Beyond the Border, a plan launched with fanfare in 2011 by President Barack Obama and Stephen Harper, Canada's prime minister, aims to create joint perimeter security. But work on aligning standards and rules has been sporadic. Every resumption, such as a meeting last month in Washington, DC, is hailed unconvincingly as a new start.
While Canada is keen, the other side lacks the will for a sustained push. Coolness between Mr Obama and Mr Harper hardly helps. Ms Rumery, the librarian at that cultural centre on the border, could see her nightmare come to pass--users having to clear customs to get through her door.
