<keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> on Thursday signed a definitive agreement to acquire UK-based <keyword id="3248886" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metaswitch">Metaswitch</keyword> Networks, a leading provider of virtualised network software and voice, data and communications solutions for operators, for an undisclosed sum. The convergence of cloud and communication networks presents a unique opportunity for Microsoft to serve operators globally via continued investment in <keyword id="161016" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azure">Azure</keyword>. "This announcement builds on our recent acquisition of Affirmed Networks, which closed on April 23. Metaswitch's complementary portfolio of ultra-high-performance, cloud-native communications software will expand our range of offerings available for the telecommunications industry," said Yousef Khalidi, Corporate Vice President, Azure Networking. As the industry moves to 5G, operators will have opportunities to advance the virtualization of their core networks and move forward on a path to an increasingly cloud-native future. Microsoft aims to leverage these two organisations -- extending the Azure platform to both deploy and grow these capabilities at scale in a way that is secure, efficient and creates a sustainable ecosystem. "We will continue to support hybrid and multi-cloud models to create a more diverse telecom ecosystem and spur faster innovation, an expanded set of unique offerings and greater opportunities for differentiation," said Khalidi. 5G will ultimately give operators a path to accelerate service innovation and deliver new transformative experiences that are faster, more resilient and more secure, spurred on by software advances to drive transformation at scale, said the company. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5i8FeN5siY">YouTube</a>Violin Memory CEO Kevin DeNuccio</div></div></div>A month and a half after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/violin-memory-fires-ceo-don-basile-2013-12" target="_blank">firing its CEO over poor financial performance</a>, flash-storage maker Violin Memory has named Kevin DeNuccio as president and chief executive officer.
DeNuccio <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/kevindenuccio" target="_blank">previously served as CEO of Wild West Capital LLC</a>, an angel investing, management, and technology consulting firm he co-founded in 2012. But he's run tech companies, too including Metaswitch Networks and Redback Networks. Redback was acquired by Ericsson for $2.1 billion in 2006. 
"Kevin DeNuccio has an outstanding track record within the technology industry of achieving profitable growth and creating significant value," said Violin Memory chairman Howard A. Bain <a href="http://investor.violin-memory.com/company/investors-overview/investor-news/investor-news-details/2014/Violin-Memory-Names-Kevin-DeNuccio-Chief-Executive-Officer/default.aspx" target="_blank">in a press release.</a>
The company has taken a beating since it went public in September, with an initial offering set at $9 per share. While the company raised $162 million from its IPO, the stock price fell to $7 on its opening day. 
The stock continued to fall through December on poor financial results, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/violin-memory-cto-leaves-amid-lawsuits-2013-12" target="_blank">a major earnings miss in November.</a> After that, the company fired <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/violin-memory-fires-ceo-don-basile-2013-12" target="_blank">CEO Don Basile</a>, and other executives left too, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/violin-memory-cto-leaves-amid-lawsuits-2013-12" target="_blank">CTO Jonathan Goldrick</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/coo-of-violin-memory-is-out-2014-1" target="_blank">COO Dixon Doll Jr.</a>
Shares fell <a href="https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:VMEM" target="_blank">as low as $2.56 in December </a>and were trading at $3.78 at market close on Monday.
In comparison, Violin Memory's competitor, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nimble-ipo-2013-12">Nimble Storage had a great IPO in December</a>, with the initial $21 price popping as high as $35 on opening day, and traded above $39 at market close on Monday.
