These countries had massive sections of their population which were unbanked. M-Pesa brought branch-less banking by allowing transfer and payments through pin-verified SMS systems. India also has large sections of the unbanked population. Half a decade ago, precisely, only 35% of the Indian populace, had bank accounts. One of the key moves by the Indian government to change this was to tie in LPG subsidy with bank accounts. By mandating that every individual had to create a bank account to avail this subsidy, the Government effectively boosted the banking population in a matter of 6 months. Today the bankable population in India stands at over 53% - and has a tremendous scope of betterment.<br />

As ticks become more active this spring, both humans and their pets will be at greater risk of diseases like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-protect-against-lyme-disease-during-tick-season-2021-8">Lyme disease</a>, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis.</p><p>But a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/pet-insurance/pet-care/highest-and-lowest-risk-states-for-pet-illness/">new science report</a> from Forbes Advisor, the analysis arm of Forbes, could help you protect your pets from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-check-for-tick-bites-this-summer-2023-5">tick-borne diseases</a> and other harmful infections.</p><p>The report analyzed 19 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/funny-animal-photos-comedy-pet-photography-awards-finalists-2024-5">dog and cat</a> diseases across the US from six pet health and infectious disease organizations, including the Center for Disease Control and the American Veterinary Medical Association. The scale ranges from zero to 100, and states with higher scores have a greater risk of these diseases.</p><p>These were the 10 riskiest states, according to the data:</p><ol><li><strong>West Virginia </strong>Score: 100</li><li><strong>Rhode Island </strong>Score: 80.71</li><li><strong>New Jersey </strong>Score: 74.1</li><li><strong>Kentucky </strong>Score: 73.91</li><li><strong>Maine </strong>Score: 71.3</li><li><strong>Oklahoma </strong>Score: 70.15</li><li><strong>New York </strong>Score: 66.23</li><li><strong>Mississippi </strong>Score: 65.88</li><li><strong>Indiana </strong>Score: 65.69</li><li><strong>Pennsylvania </strong>Score: 64.75</li></ol><p>Some key takeaways: Five of the top 10 riskiest states for your pet are on the East Coast (Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maine, New York, and Pennsylvania). </p><p>Two of these 10 states, West Virginia and Maine, were also among the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-states-with-lyme-disease-other-tick-borne-illnesses-2022-5">top three riskiest states for tick-borne diseases</a>. And Pennsylvania recorded the most cases of rabies (237) in cats between 2017 to 2021.</p><h2 id="0a607237-2959-418a-a8ca-9eca83e16e66">The most common diseases to watch out for</h2><h3 id="99bf07fe-fbfc-4986-a19e-46d33596bc02">Ticks</h3><p id="0a607237-2959-418a-a8ca-9eca83e16e66">Tick-borne diseases like Lyme Disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-prevent-diseases-from-ticks-mosquitoes-summer-2018-6">especially common in the spring and summer months</a>.</p><p>Arkansas, Maine, and West Virginia ranked highest in tick-borne diseases out of all 50 states. But regionally, the East Coast — and especially the Northeast — showed the highest risk of tick-borne disease.</p><p>These bacterial infections <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deer-tick-powassan-virus-lyme-disease-risk-2017-6">can turn deadly</a> if not treated quickly, so it's important to watch your pet for symptoms. Fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and joint stiffness or pain are all common symptoms of these three tick-borne diseases.</p><h3 id="57fd3145-dee8-41fc-9784-60a185b1ab27">Parasites</h3><p>Ticks aren't the only tiny critters that can get your pet sick. Parasites like worms can wriggle their way into your pets' bodies when they ingest contaminated substances like dirt or feces, or when an infected insect — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/pets/dog-scratching">like fleas and mosquitos</a> — bite your pet.</p><p>Roundworms are the most common <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/pets/worms-in-dogs">intestinal parasites</a> in cats and dogs. The top three states with the highest risk of roundworm were South Dakota, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.</p><p>This parasite poses the biggest risk to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foster-kittens-puppies-san-antonio-zoo-2020-7">puppies and kittens</a>, so it's important to deworm them every two weeks until they're three months old, according to Companion Veterinary Clinic. Watch for symptoms like a distended belly, weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.</p><h3 id="633be37d-cd4f-4f5b-b45c-83d12cddef68">Viruses</h3><div type="image" title="A vet examines a white cat" height="1414" width="2119" msid="110313028" hostid="261" sizebytes="185776"></div><p>Cats and dogs can catch viruses too. The risk of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/pets/dog-sneezing-a-lot">dog flu</a>, a highly contagious respiratory virus, was highest in New Mexico, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.</p><p>Most dogs recover from the flu in two to three weeks, but it's still important to look for the symptoms so that you can keep them properly hydrated, rested, and fed while they recover. Symptoms include a runny nose, fever, lethargy, runny eyes, and loss of appetite, according to the FA report.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-adopts-depressed-cat-fishtopher-after-seeing-viral-tweet-2022-11">Feline immunodeficiency virus</a> is one of the most common diseases that infect cats. Kentucky and Mississippi showed the highest risk of this disease.</p><p>It's dangerous because infected cats may not display any symptoms for years, but all the while, this virus is causing lasting damage to their immune systems. Though the early signs are hard to see, you can catch them one to three months following infection if you know what to look for including swollen lymph nodes, fever, depression, and lack of appetite, according to Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine.</p><h2 id="439c804d-01bc-4e72-bfbb-0ec7907a30d8">How to keep your pet safe</h2><p id="439c804d-01bc-4e72-bfbb-0ec7907a30d8">No matter where you live, there are some preventative measures that every pet owner can take to protect their pet's health.</p><p>Scheduling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-often-should-my-dog-go-to-the-vet">annual vet check-ups</a> to make sure your pet is up to date on their vaccines is a great place to start, according to the animal rescue Brandywine Valley SPCA.</p><p>It's also important to keep up with preventative medication. Experts recommend giving your pet heartworm, flea, and tick medication once a month, all year round, and routinely checking your pet's fur and skin for ticks, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the FDA.</p><p>Trips to the vet can get expensive, especially if your pet needs emergency care or surgery. Emergency vet bills range from $150 to $5,000 on average in the US, MetLife reports. Consider <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-pet-insurance">purchasing pet insurance</a> to help cover unexpected costs. Depending on your pet's breed, age, and other factors, pet insurance can range from $48 to $68 per month per dog and $28 to $40 monthly per cat, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/pet-insurance/pet-insurance-cost/">separate report</a> from Forbes Advisor.</p><p>And last, but certainly not least, making sure your pet gets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/pets/can-dogs-eat-cat-food">proper nutrition</a>, hydration, exercise, and mental stimulation is key to keeping them happy and healthy, according to the Animal Foundation.</p>

The 10 states where your pet is more likely to get sick from tick-borne diseases, viruses, parasites, and more

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Yemi Rose is the founder of OfColor, a startup helping workers of color build generational wealth.</li><li>The 3-year-old business has partnered with major enterprise clients such as MetLife.</li></ul><p>When Yemi Rose moved to the US from Jamaica, he was shocked by the lack of financial support for people of color.</p><p>"I was fascinated at how a country that was so wealthy tolerates what we tolerate," Rose said. "We tolerate this really large racial wealth gap that if it was anywhere else in the world, we would be screaming about economic apartheid."</p><p>That revelation was part of his inspiration to launch <a href="https://www.ofcolor.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OfColor</a>, a financial-services company that aims to help workers of color build generational wealth, a topic employees are increasingly worried about amid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-gen-z-finances-debt-sidehustles-jobs-rent-2022-12">talk of a recession and increased credit-card debt</a>. The 3-year-old startup incorporates financial therapy, financial counseling, and general financial advice through coaching, content, and community organizing and sells the educational packages to enterprise clients, which pass them to their employees. </p><p>OfColor has partnered with major enterprise clients such as MetLife and focuses on the healthcare, retail, and manufacturing industries because they "have a large population of employees of color and are struggling with how to support these employees," Rose said. </p><p>"We want to give actionable intelligence to people," he added, saying that would make a generational difference.</p><p>Before starting OfColor, Rose spent 16 years workings for financial and consulting firms like Thomson Financial and KPMG.</p><p>In a conversation with Insider, Rose shared his thoughts on how small-business owners could reach <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-accountability-pay-equity-essential-to-biotech-diversity-2022-6">pay equity for their employees of color</a>.</p><h2>Understanding <strong>America's wealth gap</strong></h2><p>America's racial wealth gap became apparent to Rose early on, as did the country's focus on race and Blackness.</p><p>"In Jamaica, everyone leads with social class and money as the way folks identify you," he said, adding that Americans led with race. "I had to learn how to be a Black man in America, specifically in corporate America."</p><p>Before launching OfColor, Rose wanted to become an expert on the systems dictating wealth across America. So he began working with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employee-resource-groups-small-business-community-company-culture-2022-10">employee-resource groups</a> and researching, writing, and publishing as much as he could about the topic.</p><p>"Coming up from slavery, Jim Crow, institutionalized racism, it's resulted in disparities in everything from education, healthcare, jobs, housing, and it's really difficult, specifically for Black Americans, regardless of income, to build wealth," Rose said. "Because we just didn't get a 400-year head start."</p><h2>Not every paycheck is equal</h2><div type="image" title="Caitlin Peace (left) and Yemi Rose (right)" height="959" width="1278" msid="97916882" hostid="261" sizebytes="90942"></div><p>While many businesses have recently focused on equal pay and competitive salaries for employees of color, they need to consider that their employees may be the first or only person in their respective families to earn that wage, Rose said. That's where equity — or taking each person's circumstances into consideration when determining pay, benefits, and other factors — comes in.</p><p>"I wanted to point out to them that what they are doing is giving pay equality," he said of large corporations, "but the amount of money that employees of color are able to keep is significantly lower" than that of white employees. This is due to the earnings leakage that often occurs through accumulated medical, educational, or housing debt, he said. </p><p>For example, in a 2022 survey from CNBC and the global survey platform Momentive, <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/curiosity/cnbc-invest-in-you-jan-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">24% of Black adults</a> reported having federal student-loan debt, compared with 14% of white adults. Additionally, in a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 56% of Black adults and <a href="https://www.kff.org/report-section/kff-health-care-debt-survey-main-findings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50% of Hispanic adults</a> reported having healthcare debt in 2022, compared with 37% of white adults. </p><p>With this in mind, Rose knew building OfColor would require a large-scale implementation to affect change, which is why he landed on enterprise companies as his target customers. </p><h2><strong>Pay floors and DEI workshops are not enough</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="OfColor panelists" height="1405" width="1874" msid="97916883" hostid="261" sizebytes="316620"></div><p>As the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion has become increasingly important in the workplace, corporate workshops — where experts or consultants train employees on racial bias and other concerns — have been a go-to solution for many employers. While these can be helpful for white employees to learn about the issues, companies should focus more on actively supporting workers of color by ensuring there's diversity in leadership and resources, Rose said. </p><p>Additionally, contracted positions often save companies money by limiting the cost of benefits for hires. But if an employer is looking to further support employees who may not be able to easily access or afford benefits like healthcare, it should consider putting them on the payroll full time, he said. </p><p>"Just a simple shift by an hour or two can make a really big difference in someone's life," Rose added.</p><p>Aside from reviewing pay practices, businesses could "completely fund employees' health-insurance premiums, provide nonelective retirement contributions, and fully fund their accounts up front so that the employee will be able to benefit from compound interests sooner because they have more in the market," he said. </p><p>What's more, Rose said, the future of many businesses will depend on their willingness to embed equity into all their facets.</p><p>"We know that consumers gravitate to companies that share their values, so my hope is that we're going to have more and more companies leaning in," he said.</p>

How small-business owners can address pay equity, according to a startup founder trying to build generational wealth for employees of color

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="91294" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="American-Express">American Express</keyword> and a nonprofit called Strive for College have helped more than 4,000 students navigate the complicated college admissions and financial aid process through their program UStrive. </li><li>The program pairs students from marginalized backgrounds with American Express employees and cardholders who volunteer as mentors. </li><li>With the help of his mentor, Alexander-Joseph Silva, 18, was able to apply to college, secure financial aid, and navigate the process of coming out as transgender. </li><li>American Express global president Doug Buckminster says mentorship programs are a key part of addressing <keyword id="6411412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="inequality">inequality</keyword>. </li></ul><p>Alexander-Joseph Silva, 18, is a freshman studying computer science at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. His freshman year has been great so far. He's enjoying his classes and making new friends. On top of that, he's proud to have secured more than $30,000 in scholarships. </p><p>It's all a success he wasn't sure was in his future just one year ago. When he was a senior in high school, he was "overwhelmed" and "intimidated" by the college and financial aid process. The staff at his high school was too busy to help him, he said.  </p><p>"I really didn't know what to do with college applications," Silva told Business Insider. </p><p>That is, until he met John Fedor-Cunningham, a 54-year-old social impact investor, business owner, and organic farmer who lives in the southern Champlain Valley of Vermont, and Pernambuco, Brazil. Fedor-Cunningham guided Silva through the process of applying to college, securing scholarships, and navigating financial aid.</p><p>Fedor-Cunningham, who is gay, also helped Silva navigate the process of coming out as transgender. </p><p>The two connected through a program called <a href="https://www.ustrive.com/">UStrive</a>, a virtual mentorship run by the nonprofit Strive for College. The program pairs high school seniors from marginalized backgrounds with executives and cardholders from American Express who volunteer as mentors. </p><p>Silva (who is Hispanic) is one of approximately 4,000 students that American Express and Strive for College have served since launching their partnership in 2018. Some 85% of the student participants are people of color. </p><p>Mentorship programs like UStrive provide young people access to social capital they might not normally have access to. Whether it's career or financial advice, industry expertise, or connections in a field, or just someone to offer guidance, mentors can give mentees a range of positive benefits. On a macro level, they cut through social circles and networks to give people from under-served backgrounds access to valuable resources. </p><p>A 2009 <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2352144/">meta analysis</a> of research found that mentorship can greatly boost the mentee's attitudes of themselves and their abilities, and is associated with better career and workplace outcomes. It's also beneficial for mentors. People who mentor are more likely to report feeling engaged at work and feeling a sense of purpose, per a <a href="https://www.sap.com/insights/hr/why-mentors-matter.html">report</a> from software company SAP. </p><h2><strong>The benefits of mentoring are real</strong></h2><p>Each week, Silva and Fedor-Cunningham spent about an hour or so either on the phone or video chatting going over applications, financial aid forms, and Silva's college essay. </p><p>"My mentor helped me when I really didn't know what to do with college applications," Silva said. </p><p>Over time, their mentor-mentee relationship evolved. While Silva was applying to colleges, he was also navigating the process of coming out as transgender to family, friends, and at school. </p><p>The process was stressful for Silva, and he came to rely on Fedor-Cunningham for support. </p><p>"He helped me with college applications, scholarship applications, navigating through my identity and family, finding resources related to my career, and my college decision," Silva said.  </p><div type="image" title="John Fedor-Cunningham" height="1109" width="1479" msid="79478548" hostid="261"></div><p>Fedor-Cunningham encouraged Silva to embrace his whole identity. After the two talked, Silva decided to incorporate his experience of coming out into his college essay. </p><p>Without the mentorship program, Silva said he would have been "a lot more stressed and anxious" during his last year of high school. He also is unsure whether he would have secured as much money in scholarships. </p><p>"It truly has changed my life for the better," Silva said. </p><h2><strong>How mentorship programs help companies advance diversity, equity, and inclusion </strong></h2><p>The program has made a real difference for these students, according to Michael Carter, Strive for College founder and CEO. </p><p>"For low-income, first-generation students, mentoring unlocks access to the kind of social capital that can break the chain of generational poverty," he told Business Insider. </p><p>According to American Express Global President Doug Buckminster, the program is a way for the company to tackle diversity, equity, and inclusion in a meaningful way. </p><p>"I'm a big believer and a big beneficiary of educational access. I believe it is a fundamental part of the solution to what is one of the largest problems facing society today, and that's income inequality and a lack of economic mobility," he said. </p><div type="image" title="Doug Buckminster" height="1226" width="1510" msid="79478550" hostid="261"></div><p>The financial giant recently announced a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-express-to-invest-1-billion-in-diversity-push-2020-10">$1 billion commitment</a> to address racial inequality. As part of the program, the company set a goal to reach 100% pay parity for its global colleagues (though it did not disclose by when), double its spending with minority-owned suppliers, and hire and promote more people of color, in addition to other measures. </p><p>"Our goal is to help eliminate barriers that have made it more difficult for underrepresented groups to have equal access to economic and social opportunities," Buckminster said. </p><h2>Commitments to address racial inequity are on the rise </h2><p>Other companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/international/news/a-mastercard-svp-shares-how-the-companys-recent-500-million-commitment-is-helping-to-close-the-racial-wealth-gap-in-the-us/amp_articleshow/78172622.cms">MasterCard</a>, <a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/news-stories/jpmc-commits-30-billion-to-advance-racial-equity">JP Morgan</a>, and <a href="https://www.citigroup.com/citi/news/2020/200923a.htm">Citi</a>, have also made large financial commitments to address racial inequality in the US. </p><p>Many of these initiatives include mentorship programs. In fact, Strive for College also partners with Deloitte, EY, UPS, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and others in offering the program to its employees. </p><p>In addition, JPMorgan runs a <a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/impact/people/mentoring-skilled-volunteerism/the-fellowship-initiative">fellowship program</a> that connects young men of color to JPMorgan employees who serve as mentors. Mastercard has a program called <a href="https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/vision/corp-responsibility/social-sustainability/corporate-philanthropy-volunteering/girls-4-tech.html">Girls4Tech</a> that trains girls in STEM and provides them with mentors in the industry. The Citi Foundation, the firm's nonprofit arm, recently announced a $100 million investment in its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citi-investment-100-million-upskilling-reduce-inequality-corporate-america-2020-9">Pathways to Progress program</a>, which provides workforce training, career advice, and mentorship to young people from marginalized backgrounds.</p><p>Other firms like PwC, MetLife, and EY have partnered with the nonprofit <a href="https://allstars.org/">All Stars</a>, which connects young people from low-income communities with mentors in business. </p><p>The programs aren't only beneficial for mentees, but for mentors too. </p><p>American Express employees and cardholders who've participated in the program have told the company president that they feel like they're making "a real difference" by helping young people get into and finance college.  </p><p>As Fedor-Cunningham puts it: "As a married gay man, I have frequently experienced discrimination, therefore I have a very personal reason for promoting diversity," he said. "American Express should be commended for their role helping students achieve their dreams." </p><p>Silva recommends the program to other teens. </p><p>"I feel great after completing the program," he said, "UStrive is a great place for teens that need someone to go to for help with things that will push their future farther than they'd imagine."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/forayinto35mm/15807432962/">Flickr / Chris Marchant</a></span></p><p class="caption">Enter the return internship.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In 2008, Goldman Sachs launched a mid-career internship program: the "returnship."</p><p>Since then, other major financial companies like MetLife, JP Morgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley, along with technology and engineering companies such as IBM and General Motors, have embraced the concept of the return internship.</p><p>A return internship, or re-entry program, is a temporary, mid-career internship meant to assist people who spent significant time out of the workforce - for childcare, to pursue a personal interest, or for personal health reasons - to gain the skills they need to return to work.</p><p>For companies, it's a way to recruit highly qualified mid-career professionals, and for workers, it is a chance to get a foot in the hiring door.</p><p>Goldman Sachs' 10-week, paid program offers highly qualified candidates opportunities to work in a variety of divisions and in a number of locations globally. The program is increasingly popular and competitive -<span> </span><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/01/returnship/514595/">The Atlantic</a><span> </span>reports that Goldman receives hundreds of applications for 20 or 30 spots per year,<strong> </strong>and half of its returnship participants go on to work full-time upon completion of the program.</p><p>Credit Suisse launched its own program in 2014. "<a href="https://www.credit-suisse.com/us/en/careers/career-opportunities/experienced-professionals/real-returns.html">Real Returns</a>" is paid and runs for 12 weeks, and along with networking opportunities and training, the program offers mentorship and guidance from colleagues. You'll find similar programs at JP Morgan Chase ("<a href="http://careers.jpmorgan.com/careers/programs/reentry-program">ReEntry</a>"), Morgan Stanley ("<a href="http://www.morganstanley.com/people-opportunities/return-to-work.html">Return to Work</a>"), and MetLife (<a href="https://blog.metlife.com/metlife-stories/reentering-the-workforce/10-17-2016">ACT2</a>).</p><p>"Re-entry programs are proliferating because they work," Carol Fishman Cohen, CEO of career re-entry firm <a href="https://www.irelaunch.com/">iRelaunch</a>, told Business Insider via email. iRelaunch partnered with the <a href="http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org/">Society of Women Engineers</a> in 2015 to launch the <a href="http://reentry.swe.org/">STEM Reentry Task Force</a>, which recruits tech and engineering professionals for internships. <span>Since 2008, iRelaunch has organized the Return to Work Conference each year, which is sponsored by companies in order to meet "high-caliber returning professionals and get educated on the best practices for hiring relaunchers."</span></p><p>What's in it for companies? Cohen said companies use these internships as a "testing ground" which "lowers the perceived risk of engaging with the return-to-work pool. Not only can the company evaluate the intern based on an actual work sample instead of a series of interviews, but the company does not have to make the permanent hiring decision until the internship period is over."</p><p>She also said the 'relauncher' demographic is broadening to include men who have taken leave to provide childcare, in addition to both women and men who have taken career breaks for reasons that have nothing to do with childcare: eldercare, pursuing a personal interest, or a personal health issue.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>dotshock/Shutterstock</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>It's not just Wall Street offering return internships. IBM offers "<a href="http://www-03.ibm.com/employment/jobs/women_at_ibm_reentry.shtml">Pathways Program for Experienced Technical Women</a>" and General Motors offers "<a href="http://careers.gm.com/working-with-us/experienced-internships.html">Take-2 Career</a>," which received roughly 400 applicants for 10 internship spots last year, as reported by<span> </span><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/01/returnship/514595/">The Atlantic</a>.</p><p>In 2016, a nonprofit organization called<span> </span><a href="http://www.pathforward.org/about-us-2/">Path Forward</a>, a spin-off of the software company<span> </span><a href="https://returnpath.com/about/careers/employee-programs/">Return Path</a>, launched a re-entry program which works with big tech companies to recruit professionals for internships. While open to men and women, the program actively targets women to recruit them into the tech industry. "These women are passionate, motivated, and hungry to get back to work," Tami Forman, executive director of Path Forward, told Business Insider via email. "The opportunity for companies to tap into this pool of talent is really incredible."</p><p>Forman said women are disproportionately penalized because they are more likely to take time off work. A 2014 poll by the<span> </span><a href="http://kff.org/other/poll-finding/kaiser-family-foundationnew-york-timescbs-news-non-employed-poll/">New York Times, CBS News, and the Kaiser Family Foundation<span> </span></a>on nonworking adults ages 25 to 54 found that 61% of women stay home due to family responsibilities, compared to only 37% of nonworking men.<span> </span>Many women see re-entry programs as a way to rejoin and advance in the financial services and technology sectors. "That said, we have had <a href="http://www.pathforward.org/a-new-way-to-return-to-work-spotlight-on-returnee-john-bortscheller/">a former stay-at-home dad</a> in our program and we are very open to serving men who've taken a break from their career to focus on caregiving," Forman said.</p><p>Path Forward has worked with 20 companies, including PayPal, Coursera, domain registrar company GoDaddy, and customer service software company Zendesk to recruit professionals to internship programs. This year's participants will intern at AppNexus, an ad management software provider, and Quantcast, a digital marketing company, among others. Path Forward reports that more than 50 women have graduated from its re-entry programs and of those, 80% were hired by the companies they interned for and 90% are now employed.</p><p>The rate of interns who get hired full time after completing programs at Goldman Sachs, MetLife, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley has ranged from 50% to as high as 90% depending on the program and year, reported the <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/silicon-valley-women-whove-left-tech-please-come-back-2282376">International Business Times</a>. Internships aren't just for college kids anymore - companies from Goldman Sachs to General Motors are hiring interns mid-career

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Small businesses owners have struggled during the pandemic, with the number of small businesses in the US dropping by 29% since January. </li><li>Meanwhile, massive companies like <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> have seen their valuations explode by billions of dollars. </li><li>Even before the pandemic, the playing field has been increasingly tilted to favor massive companies over small businesses.</li><li>As businesses hope for a brighter 2021, the US needs to make changes that allow small businesses to actually compete with the Amazons and Walmarts of the world. </li><li>"The word recovery implies that we're going to recover them back to where they were," said Luz Urrutia, CEO of Opportunity Fund. "Where people of color, minority, immigrant, and women-owned businesses were was not a good place."</li></ul><p>2020 was a horrifying year to be a <keyword id="6359222" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Small-Business">small business</keyword> owner. Yet, for some of the biggest companies in the US, the pandemic has been a financial boon, as companies like Amazon and Walmart bring in billions. </p><p>For small businesses that manage to make it through the current public health and economic crisis, the pandemic needs to be a wake up call. The current playing field is tilted to support mega-companies over small business owners. In a crisis, this playing field becomes more uneven - but, even in brighter economic times, the inequality remains. </p><p>It is too late to save the thousands of businesses lost during the pandemic. But, we need to act now if we want to prevent a vicious cycle that requires sacrificing a dwindling number of small businesses from continuing far beyond 2020. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-investor-ctw-calls-for-resignation-of-chairman-2020-12">McDonald's investor explains why he and others are calling for the resignation of the fast-food giant's chairman</a></em></p><h2>Small businesses are feeling the pain</h2><div type="image" title="NYC coronavirus Manhattan restaurants small business closures" height="1666" width="2222" msid="80084465" hostid="261"></div><p>The pandemic has been an apocalyptic event for small businesses. The <a href="https://tracktherecovery.org/">number of small businesses</a> in the US has dropped by 29% since January and revenue has plunged by 31.9% over the same period. </p><p>But, theses closures are not an inevitable side effect of the pandemic. Instead, it is an acceleration of what has been happening for decades - big businesses consuming more of the pie, while small businesses fight over an ever-shrinking mound of scraps. </p><p>In 2000, 15% to 20% of small companies became medium or large companies every year, business professors <a href="https://hbr.org/2019/08/the-gap-between-large-and-small-companies-is-growing-why">Vijay Govindarajan and Anup Srivastava reported in Harvard Business Review.</a> By 2017, that figure had been slashed by half. </p><p>"Going into the pandemic, I have never seen the playing field more tilted" to the advantage of a handful of big businesses, Moody's analyst Charlie O'Shea told Business Insider. </p><p>"If you don't have the bucks, you can't make the investments and you can't compete on a level playing field," O'Shea said. </p><p>Prior to the pandemic, roughly half of small businesses only had enough cash to stay in business for 27 days if they stopped bringing in money, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-companies-can-survive-without-bringing-in-money-2020-3">according to a JPMorgan Chase Institute analysis.</a> A quarter had a cash buffer that would last them fewer than 13 days. </p><p>The pandemic put these cash buffers to the test. And more than 163,700 businesses failed that test, according to a September Yelp report, shutting down amidst financial hardship.</p><h2>Big business got bigger in the pandemic </h2><div type="image" title="Amazon HQ2 headquarters New York City canceled amazno" height="1379" width="1839" msid="80084469" hostid="261"></div><p>The fact that the largest companies in America thrived in a year marred by pandemic is an uncomfortable reality of 2020. The S&amp;P 500 is up nearly 16% in 2020. Amazon shares are up 73%, Walmart's shares increased by 22%, and <keyword id="6378093" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mcdonalds">McDonald's</keyword> are up 7%. </p><p>"We've used the term <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> Darwinism for a few years now," O'Shea said. "It's just crystallized during the pandemic." </p><p>Meanwhile, half of small business owners say that they will be forced to close if current business conditions continue for more than a year, according to a MetLife &amp; US Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index survey released in mid-December. </p><p>"People were in total shock" when the pandemic began, said Luz Urrutia, CEO of the small-business lender Opportunity Fund. "Small business owners were at home [asking] what do we do now? What happens? This is our lives, this is our livelihoods. This is our family."</p><p>The situation is even more dire for entrepreneurs of color.</p><p>Beyond the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/investigations-discovery/hospitalization-death-by-race-ethnicity.html">disproportionate health impacts</a> of the pandemic, <a href="https://www.uschamber.com/series/above-the-fold/small-business-owners-still-feel-pain-of-pandemic-and-fear-more-come">41% of minority-owned small businesses</a> are concerned about the impact of the pandemic on their business compared to 31% of non-minority owner businesses. 39% of minority-owned small businesses are very concerned about the impact of the pandemic on their mental health, versus 23% of non-minority-owned businesses. </p><p>"Investors believe that the large companies are at least as better off as at the start of this year," Govindarajan and Srivastava said in an email. "The same cannot be said about the small and medium enterprises. Many are not sure whether and when they would be able to resume their business, if at all." </p><h2>Why Big Business is thriving</h2><div type="image" title="walmart new test stores" height="1392" width="1857" msid="80084473" hostid="261"></div><p>Experts say that there are three major reasons why big businesses are breaking financial records while small businesses flounder during the pandemic: financial positioning, lobbying power, and tech investments. </p><p>Curbside pickup and mobile apps have been boons for fast-food chains like McDonald's. The ability to quickly and reliably ship online orders is increasingly crucial, boosting sales at companies like Amazon and Walmart that have invested in tech and logistics. This advantage was especially important this holiday season, when e-commerce made up 19.7% of overall shopping, compared to roughly 13.4% in 2019, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. </p><p>In some ways, big businesses have been able to thrive simply because they can give customers whatever they want to buy, cheaper and quicker than the competition. </p><p>But, blaming customers' choices for small businesses' demise ignores two of major factors - their cozy relationships with the government and financial institutions.</p><p>An Associated Press analysis found that bigger businesses <a href="https://apnews.com/article/38e820a06d0346e7a662d5051926cb37">disproportionately received Paycheck Protection Program companies first,</a> thanks to pre-existing relationships with banks. Govindarajan and Srivastava say that larger companies' superior lobbying power historically helps them get subsidies and concessions during economic downturns. Small business advocates argue this has continued during the pandemic, with aid shaped by massive companies' desires.  </p><p>"A lot of people in Congress say they are pro-business, but what they really mean is pro-big business," Bharat Ramamurti, the managing director of the corporate power research program at think tank Roosevelt Institute, <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/21320361/small-business-closing-covid-coronavirus-ppp-entrepreneur-economy-stimulus-loans">told Vox.</a></p><p>Saying Americans simply prefer Walmart or Amazon also erases that for many customers, where they shop isn't a choice as much as it is a necessity. </p><p>"I think many consumers would like to support their local establishments, where they have relationships, where they have a history, but that only goes so far as your wallet [or] your pocketbook will carry you," former Sears executive and Columbia Business School professor Mark Cohen said.</p><h2>America is stuck in a vicious cycle</h2><div type="image" title="Small business owner" height="2400" width="3200" msid="80084475" hostid="261"></div><p>Americans have seen what the big business boom looks like - and it's not good. While individuals might get <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/04/learning-to-love-big-business/554096/">better benefits working at a bigger company</a> or lower prices in chains' stores, the tilted playing field between big and small businesses has concrete, negative effects on the nation.</p><p>Entrepreneurship, along with homeownership, is one of the most prominent ways for Americans to build wealth, according to Urrutia. But, small businesses are making up less and less of the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>. It is increasingly challenging for these companies to compete. As small businesses vanish, it leaves many people of color - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-want-black-women-know-about-building-generational-wealth-2020-6">already with less generational wealth than white families</a> - with one fewer option to build wealth. </p><p>The trend favoring big businesses coincides with a widening gap between the rich and poor in the US. </p><p>Income has<a href="https://www.epi.org/publication/charting-wage-stagnation/"> stagnated for most workers</a> in recent decades when adjusted for inflation, despite net productivity growing by 70% since the early '70s. Income inequality has increased steadily since the 1980s, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-income-inequality-record-high-generational-wealth-2019-9">according to US Census data.</a> The 1% now controls about 37% of the wealth in the US, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charts-why-inequality-is-a-major-american-political-issue#the-share-of-wealth-accruing-to-the-top-1-of-that-distribution-follows-a-similar-trajectory-as-income-but-with-an-even-higher-degree-of-concentration-2">nearing Gilded Age highs.</a> </p><p>Customers shop at companies like Amazon, Walmart, and McDonald's that offer lower prices and convenience because it is what they can afford. Big business puts small business out of business with its superior deals. As a result, it becomes harder for the average entrepreneur to start and maintain a new mom-and-pop shop and build wealth.</p><p>It's a vicious cycle that has continued for years. The pandemic only made an existing problem even worse. </p><h2>The pandemic forced the broken system into the spotlight</h2><div type="image" title="small business reopen reopening" height="2000" width="2667" msid="80084477" hostid="261"></div><p>Cohen and other experts argue that the system needs to right itself, or the American economy will simply cease to function.</p><p>The US will not recover economically, according to Cohen, until people are employed and have disposable income. That requires healthy small businesses. So, Cohen believes, political and corporate leadership will finally take the steps to make that happen.</p><p>"We're in for a whole lot more pain and suffering than we've seen," Cohen said. "But in the longer term, I really have an abiding belief in the power of the crowd to lift itself out of the muck. We have the opportunity to do that, by exercising a belief, wisdom, ambition."</p><p>Experts offer an arsenal of options for how small businesses can be allowed to compete more fairly with the Amazons of the world and give Americans the financial flexibility to support small businesses.</p><p>Cohen emphasized the importance of new government policies, such as higher minimum wage and tax reform. Urrutia sees expanding small businesses' access to capital, as well as services such as advertising and technology, as key. </p><p>"I don't like to use the word recovery because the word recovery implies that we're going to recover them back to where they were," Urrutia said. "Where people of color, minority, immigrant, and women-owned businesses were was not a good place. It was not a solid foundation."</p><p>"I talk about reversing, rebuilding and regenerating," Urrutia continued. "We don't want them to recover to where they were before."</p>

In 2020, big businesses got bigger and small businesses died. The vicious cycle won't stop until we take action.
