It is the company’s latest luxury SUV in the Indian market and has been launched in three variants.<br /><br />The Mercedes-Benz GLE facelift comes with a slightly revamped design and improved technology. Apart from this, the bumper’s design has also been refreshed to give it a more modern look.<br /><br />The luxury SUV comes with 20-inch alloy wheels as a standard, which can be further upgraded to 22-inch alloy wheels. Apart from this, the rear bumper has also been revamped.<br /><br />Coming to the interiors, not much has changed when compared to the car’s outgoing variant. The GLE now features a revamped steering wheel with touch-haptic controls. The infotainment display has also been upgraded to run on the company’s new MBUX system.<br /><br />The Mercedes-Benz GLE is available in three options – the GLE 300 d, GLE 450 d and the GLE 450. You can pick from two diesel engine options and a single petrol variant. All three powertrain variants are equipped with mild-hybrid technology to give it a mileage and performance boost on the road.<br /><br />Starting with the GLE 300 d, it comes with a 2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 269 PS of power and 550 Nm of peak torque. The GLE 450 d on the other hand is equipped with a 3-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 367 PS of maximum power and 750 Nm of peak torque. Kia Sonet with revamped design, ADAS launched starting at ₹7.99 lakh

Luxury car maker, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mercedes-Benz&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mercedes-Benz</a>, launched a slightly upgraded CLA- <keyword id="3904560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cla-facelift">CLA Facelift</keyword>, in India at a price tag of Rs 31.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The new upgraded version is available in both petrol and diesel variant at a price of the petrol 200 Sport being Rs 33.68 lakh and that of the diesel 200 D Sport being Rs 34.68 lakh.<br />

The looks of the new version is slightly upgraded, making it perfect. At the front, the car gets an updated set of headlamps that are full-LED. The tech related to the daytime running light pattern too gets a minor update and looks a tad bit better than its predecessor. The bumper the car sports, is like the ones offered on the international specs cars. A similar chrome strip also runs on the rear bumper joining the two tail pipes that have also gone through a very subtle nip and tuck. The side profile of the new <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CLA+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">CLA</a> is identical to the pre-facelift cars including the 17-inch wheels that have been carried forward.<br />
<br />
The interior front gets a new upgraded 8-inch screen as compared to the 7-inch one. The screen is also thinner than the one it replaces which makes it slightly better looking as a free-standing display unit. There has been some improvements in the infotainment system and is now getting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard along with an inbuilt Smartphone integration with Bluetooth. The infotainment unit also features GPS navigation.<br />
<br />
The upgraded version has two specs, CLA200 petrol and the CLA200d diesel. The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit that makes 181bhp of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine is a 2.2-litre turbocharged four cylinder unit that makes 134bhp of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque. Both engines are mated to a seven speed gearbox which in turn is mated to a front wheel drive layout. Although international markets get the 4Matic variants, the likelihood of that driveline coming to India is highly unlikely.<br />
<br />
The CLA is expected to go against the likes of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Audi+A3+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Audi A3</a> and is thought to give the likes of BMW 1 Series Sedan, which will be launched later in India, a fight too.<br />

 However, this was 12.7 per cent lower from 2018, when it had sold 15,538 units.
<br /><br /> In the December quarter, the Pune-based company clocked sales growth of 3.3 per cent, selling 3,781 units -- its highest ever quarterly volume, it said in a statement.
<br /><br /> The company also sounded bullish about 2020 and said it will continue with its product offensive, which will begin with the launch of an all-new GLE on January 28.
<br /><br /> The company said it could maintain its pole position on the back of a record 54 per cent growth in its performance vehicles segment led by the CLA, GLA and GLS models, whose new generation variants will be available from Q2 of 2020.
<br /><br /> Mercedes will also be the first luxury car maker to completely transition into BS-VI portfolio with petrol and diesel models shortly.
<br /><br /> "Amidst strong macroeconomic headwinds, our volumes in Q4 also grew by 15.41 percent from Q3 2019, taking the overall volume to 13,786 units in 2019, down 12.7 percent from 2018," the company said.
<br /><br /> Against this, rival BMW saw its volumes dip 13.8 per cent to 9,641 units in 2019 from 11,105 units in 2018. The German carmaker despatched 9,000 BMWs and 641 Minis in the year. Besides, its two-wheeler brand BMW Motorrad sold 2,403 motorcycles last year.
<br /><br /> The third German player Audi is yet to disclose its sales numbers.
<br /><br /> Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and Chief Executive Martin Schwenk said, "We are satisfied with our performance in 2019 despite facing strong macroeconomic headwinds, specifically in the first three quarters. We were able to positively influence customer sentiment with our solutions and achieved the new best ever Q4."
<br /><br /> The year 2020 is going to be another important year for the firm and it continues to be optimistic about mid- to long-term prospects, he added.
<br /><br /> The company had an overwhelming response to its entire BS-IV portfolio and it is now ready with the all-new BS-VI range, ahead of the deadline, he said.

Mercedes remains India's top luxury car maker for the fifth year in a row

<br /> German carmaker <keyword id="6381274" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz">Mercedes Benz</keyword>’s super luxury brand <keyword id="106787" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maybach">Maybach</keyword> is back in India after nearly five years. Maybach will now operate as a sub-brand of Mercedes instead of a standalone unit as it did earlier. <br /><br />

	The company rolled out two variants, the Maybach S500 and S600. The S500, priced at Rs 1.67 crore, will be the most expensive car to be assembled in India, while the fully built import variant S600 will cost Rs 2.60 crore.
<br /><br />

	Bookings for the S500 started on the day of the launch, but the company said it has already sold out the allocated units of the S600 for the entire 2015 within two weeks of opening bookings for the model.
<br /><br /> <keyword id="1406117" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Eberhard-Kern">Eberhard Kern</keyword>, managing director and chief executive of <keyword id="164640" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz-India">Mercedes Benz India</keyword> told ET that the company endeavours to continuously offer nothing but the best to its customers and with Maybach it is taking luxury to the next level. <br /><br />

	"The best becomes better with Maybach. It is an exclusive sub-brand catering to a completely different segment. It is meant for customers who seek prestige and status," he said.
<br /><br />

	The company sees this model as a brand shaper for Mercedes Benz and Halo model that the existing luxury car owners will look up to.
<br /><br />

	The vehicle boasts the quietest car cabin, rear seat belt airbags as part of total 12 airbags, an air balance package which ionises the air in the car, exclusive nappa leather upholstery, hot stone massage seats and airmatic suspension, according to the company.

	Although the company did not reveal numbers of Maybach bookings, ET learned that more than 40 units of S600 have been booked.
<br /><br />

	The Maybach S500 will be the company's eighth model to be assembled at its local production base, after the C, E, S, ML, GL, CLA and GLA models.
<br /><br /> India is the company's first base outside <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> where S500 is being assembled, underlining the company's confidence in the country. The vehicle boasts 30-40% localisation. Local production of Maybach S500 proves high competence of local manufacturing in India and the ability of the company to offer exclusive products with local value addition in the shortest possible time, said Piyush Arora, executive director, operations. <br /><br />

	The launch was the 12th of the 15 new models Mercedes Benz had announced for India. The new products have accelerated Mercedes Benz's sales 40% over that a year ago, to 6,600 units, and helped it dislodge Audi from the No. 1 position in the first half of the year.
<br /><br />

	Kern said he expects the market to grow 15-16% and touch 38,000 units by the end of the year, with Mercedes Benz sustaining its high double-digit growth rate.

Super Luxury brand Maybach is back in India after 5 years

The Germany based automaker has launched SUV GLE that will be produced locally with starting price of Rs 58.90 lakh (ex showroom Delhi) to enhance its position in the market.<br />

The GLE will be available in two variants -- 250d with a 2,143 cc diesel engine priced at Rs 58.90 lakh, and 350d which is powered by 2,987cc diesel engine priced at Rs 69.90 lakh (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).<br />

"Our SUV portfolio has grown by 70 per cent year-on-year in the January-September period this year. GLE will be locally produced in India at our Pune plant," Mercedes-Benz India MD &amp; CEO Roland Folger told reporters.<br />

The company has an SUV portfolio ranging from the GLA to the AMG G63 in India.<br />
<br />
"The addition of the versatile GLE comes at the right time and will add to our brand's winning SUV portfolio. The start of local production of both the variants of the GLE simultaneously, is a key decision that will enable us address the demand of the SUV in foreseeable future," he added.<br />

The company has launched 13 products, including the GLE, Mercedes-Maybach, the CLA, the new C 220 CDI and the new B-Class, among others, this year. In the beginning of the year, the company said it will introduce 15 products in 2015.<br />

The company reported 34 per cent increase in sales in the country during the January-September period at 10,079 units which is almost equal to the entire volume it sold in 2014. <br />

In fact, after the 2020 model year, multiple brands - Cadillac, Lincoln, Buick, and Ford among them - will have transitioned to lineups that don't include a single sedan. </p><p>Check out 25 cars automakers killed off for 2021 below: </p><h2><strong>Acura RLX</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020_Acura_RLX_Sport_Hybrid_034 source" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978917" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The RLX luxury sedan is out of Acura's 2021 lineup after selling <a href="https://hondanews.com/en-US/releases/release-807c080220275f828905387c4f002e91-record-light-truck-sales-lift-ahm-and-honda-brand-to-sales-increases-in-2019">just over 1,000 units</a> in 2019. Acura sold roughly 50 times that amount of its MDX crossover, and around 60 times more RDX crossovers. </p><p>It has unusual features like rear-wheel steering and a sporty hybrid option with a claimed 377 horsepower, but that wasn't enough to keep buyers interested.</p><h2><strong>Alfa Romeo 4C Spider</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Alfa Romeo 4C Spider 3" height="1502" width="2250" msid="79978918" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Alfa Romeo killed off the hardtop version of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alfa-romeo-4c-spider-review-mini-ferrari-2016-7">4C</a> a few years back, and the roadster follows in its footsteps for 2021. Starting at under $70,000, the 4C is one of the most affordable mid-engined sports cars on the market - but alas, it <a href="https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/alfa-romeo-4c-sales-figures-usa-canada/">barely broke triple-digit sales</a> in 2019 and so it's gone for good. </p><p>But other inexpensive mid-engine options like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevrolet-corvette-mid-engine-review-c8-horsepower-price-specs-chevy-2020-10">Chevy Corvette</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-718-boxster-s-and-alfa-romeo-4c-spider-comparison-2018-5">Porsche Boxster</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-cayman-s-review-photos-details-2018-3">Porsche Cayman</a> are still kicking. </p><h2><strong>BMW i8</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="bmw i8 hero" height="2000" width="3000" msid="79978919" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>After six years on the market, it's the end of the line for the plug-in hybrid i8. Despite its somewhat confused combination of exotic looks and a tiny three-cylinder engine (aided by electric motors), the i8 managed to sell more than 20,000 units in its run, making it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-look-back-at-the-futuristic-bmw-i8-which-ends-production-in-april-2020-3">the best-selling car of its kind</a>, according to BMW. </p><p><a href="https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/08/26/bmw-i8-successor/">Rumors have circulated</a> around a possible i8 successor based on the Vision M Next concept car, but there's no official word yet on when or if that will happen. </p><h2><strong>BMW M8 Coupe and Convertible</strong></h2><div type="image" title="P90348795_highRes_the all new bmw m8 c" height="1571" width="2095" msid="79978920" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW is trimming the options available for its halo M8 due to COVID-19-related supply issues, <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34252647/2021-bmw-m8-coupe-convertible-phased-out/">Car and Driver</a> reported in October. The coupe and convertible won't be available for 2021, but the four-door Gran Coupe version is still on the table if you have a spare $130,000 laying around.</p><h2><strong>Buick Regal</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2019 Buick Regal GS 021 (1)" height="1398" width="1865" msid="79978923" hostid="261"></div><p>After nearly 50 years on the market, GM has canceled the Buick Regal as part of its shift away from passenger cars. The move means the Buick brand will have an all-SUV lineup going into the 2021 model year.</p><h2><strong>Cadillac CT6</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Cadillac CT6 V US Product 013" height="2377" width="3169" msid="79978929" hostid="261"></div><p>Cadillac made a name for itself building gigantic land yachts, but it's pared back its sedan lineup in recent years. Its biggest sedan won't make it to 2021, despite being one of Caddy's technological leaders and the only vehicle to get its twin-turbocharged, 4.2-liter, 550-horsepower <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillacs-new-blackwing-cars-here-to-take-on-bmw-mercedes-2020-4#-2">Blackwing V8</a>. </p><h2><strong>Chevrolet Impala</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2018 Chevrolet Impala." height="2000" width="3000" msid="79978931" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The iconic Impala nameplate bites the dust this year, but it's not the first time GM has discontinued the model. It's been on the market in spurts since the late 1950s - so there's still hope it returns once the nostalgia sets in. </p><h2><strong>Chevrolet Sonic</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Chevrolet Sonic 006" height="1395" width="2500" msid="79978933" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The demise of the small car claims another victim in the Chevy Sonic. Sales of the inexpensive hatchback and sedan peaked in 2014, when Chevy sold <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-chevrolet-sonic/">nearly 94,000 of them</a>, but plummeted <a href="https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2020/jan/0103-gmsales.html">below 14,000 in 2019</a>. </p><p>It started its life outside the US as the Aveo, and, like lots of compact cars that don't find success stateside, it will live on in other markets. </p><h2><strong>Dodge Grand Caravan</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Dodge Grand Caravan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978934" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Dodge Grand Caravan arguably <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-rise-fall-of-the-minivan-led-by-dodge-caravan-2020-4">birthed the minivan segment</a> when it came on the scene in 1984 along with its upmarket sibling, the Plymouth Voyager. Now, as crossovers and full-size SUVs have superseded minivans as America's family hauler of choice, the minivan that started it all is no more. </p><p>But Fiat Chrysler isn't out of the minivan game altogether - it still sells the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chrysler-pacifica-hybrid-minivan-review-features-2019-4">Chrysler Pacifica</a>, which got a facelift for 2021. </p><h2><strong>Dodge Journey</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="DG020_003JNf41s27dlha2vt5b61j75a7jmp2" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978935" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Dodge Journey is the only crossover to kick the bucket for 2021, which speaks volumes of its consumer appeal - or lack thereof. As of May, nearly half of 2019 Journeys sat unsold on dealer lots, according to car search engine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-car-models-with-most-2019-surplus-inventory-2020-5">iSeeCars</a>.</p><h2><strong>Ford Fusion</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 ford fusion titanium white platinum metallic" height="1292" width="2000" msid="79978936" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Ford announced plans to discontinue all of its sedans <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2018/04/26/ford-has-been-synonymous-with-cars-for-more-than-a-century-thats-about-to-change/">back in 2018</a>, and it's achieved that with the demise of the Fusion. The Focus, Fiesta, and Taurus have all left the scene as well, leaving the Ecosport compact crossover as Ford's entry-level offering. </p><h2><strong>Ford Mustang Shelby GT350</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Heritage Edition_6.JPG" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978990" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The V8-powered, manual-transmission-only <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-mustang-shelby-gt350-gt350r-stopping-production-this-fall-2020-10">Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R</a> pay homage to the famed Shelby GT350 of the 1960s, which kicked off the Mustang's high-performance reputation. But that rich history wasn't enough for the Blue Oval to keep it around. </p><p>For buyers who desire no less than an absurdly powerful sports car bearing the Shelby name, the 760-horsepower Shelby GT500 is still on the market. </p><h2><strong>Honda Civic Coupe and Civic Si</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Honda Civic Si" height="1608" width="3000" msid="79978991" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Honda is launching a new, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2022-honda-civic-debut-photos-sleek-styling-2020-11">11th generation of the Civic</a> for 2021, and some changes are coming to the popular model's lineup. The two-door Civic Coupe variant bites the dust after the 2020 model year, while the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honda-civic-si-review-specs-sedan-manual-price-horsepower-sport-2020-8">sporty Si</a> will take a hiatus for 2021 and return for the following model year. </p><h2><strong>Honda Fit</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Honda Fit" height="800" width="1200" msid="79978992" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Carmakers are getting rid of small hatchbacks left and right, and Honda is no exception. It's axing the Fit, despite the little guy being widely regarded as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-of-the-best-affordable-cars-you-can-buy-just-got-an-update-2017-7">one of the best compact economy cars</a> money can buy. </p><p>It's an understandable move, given that Fit sales have declined as appetite for the brand's crossovers grows. Now the cheapest vehicle in Honda's lineup is the $21,000 HR-V, which <a href="https://hondanews.com/en-US/releases/release-807c080220275f828905387c4f002e91-record-light-truck-sales-lift-ahm-and-honda-brand-to-sales-increases-in-2019">outsold the Fit three-to-one</a> in 2019. </p><h2><strong>Hyundai Elantra GT</strong></h2><div type="image" title="2020 Elantra GT " height="995" width="1326" msid="79978994" hostid="261"></div><p>The hatchback version of the Hyundai Elantra heads to the great junkyard in the sky after the 2020 model year, along with its sporty sibling, the GT N Line. <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/3101">Hyundai said</a> the hatchback was displaced by the compact Venue and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hyundai-kona-review-photos-styling-2020-12">Kona</a> crossovers.</p><p>But the Veloster and Veloster N carry over to 2021. </p><h2><strong>Jaguar XE</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jaguar XE" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79978995" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Jaguar is eliminating its entry-level sport sedan, the XE, from its US lineup after selling only <a href="https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/jaguar-xe-sales-figures-usa-canada/">3,551 of them</a> in 2019. By comparison, BMW regularly sells well <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200103005391/en/BMW-of-North-America-Reports-December-2019-and-Year-End-U.S.-Sales.">over 40,000</a> 3-Series sedans annually, while Mercedes-Benz moved some <a href="https://carsalesbase.com/us-mercedes-benz-c-class/">50,000 C-Class sedans</a> in 2019. </p><p>For 2021, the XF sedan assumes the entry-level spot and gets a significant price cut to match.</p><h2><strong>Jaguar XF Sportbrake</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Jaguar XF S" height="1200" width="1800" msid="79978996" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Wagons are also going by the wayside as crossovers take over, and Jaguar is pulling its one and only long-roof model, the XF Sportbrake, from the American market after only three model years. In that time, Jaguar sold fewer than 250 of the wagons, according to <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a34285524/jaguar-xe-xf-sportbrake-cancelled/">Road &amp; Track</a>.</p><p>Buyers in the market for a luxury wagon will need to look to offerings like the Volvo V90, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-a4-allroad-wagon-crossover-review-2017-6">Audi</a> A6 Avant, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-panamera-gts-sport-turismo-review-photos-features-verdict-2020-2">Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo</a> come 2021. </p><h2><strong>Kia Optima</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Kia Optima" height="1326" width="2000" msid="79978997" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Kia Optima is on its way out after two decades in production. But the South Korean carmaker isn't abandoning sedans like some of its US counterparts - the Optima is succeeded by a sleek new mid-sized model called the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-kia-k5-specs-features-photos-release-date">K5</a>. </p><h2><strong>Lexus GS</strong></h2><div type="image" title="LEX GSG MY20 0010 LEAD IMAGE scaled" height="1298" width="1731" msid="79978999" hostid="261"></div><p>The Lexus GS hit the scene in the early 1990s and has endured through four generations. This particular rear-wheel-drive sedan may be going away after 2020, but Lexus-sedan stans will still be able to choose the ES, LS, and IS. </p><h2><strong>Lincoln Continental</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lincoln Continental" height="942" width="2000" msid="79979001" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Lincoln has used the Continental name on and off for some 80 years, and this latest version of the car is dead for 2021. But given the nameplate's deep history, there's a good shot it will come back someday - perhaps on some future electric luxury sedan. </p><h2><strong>Lincoln MKZ</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lincoln MKZ" height="2000" width="3000" msid="79979002" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>With the MKZ and Continental gone for 2021, Lincoln is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lincoln-continental-mkz-sedan-dead-suv-crossover-lineup-american-luxury-2020-7">left with an all-SUV lineup</a> of the Nautilus, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-lincoln-aviator-review-hybrid-specs-three-row-suv-luxury-2020-7">Aviator</a>, Corsair, and the flagship Navigator. </p><p>And the numbers back up Lincoln's move. In 2019, the brand sold some <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2020/01/06/sales-4q2019.pdf">88,000 SUVs</a> and fewer than 25,000 sedans - and that's with only a partial year of Aviator sales. </p><p>Following this year's lineup shakeups at Ford and Lincoln, the Mustang is the Blue Oval's only car left standing. </p><h2><strong>Mercedes-Benz SLC</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="_F8A6477 1200x800" height="800" width="1200" msid="79979005" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Mercedes-Benz SLC is has been officially discontinued with no successor planned, following more than two decades of continuous production. For the model's last hurrah, Mercedes added a yellow <a href="https://media.mbusa.com/releases/the-slc-final-edition">2020 SLC Final Edition</a> to its lineup. </p><h2><strong>Toyota Yaris</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Yaris " height="1166" width="1555" msid="79979006" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The death of the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Chevy Sonic, and Hyundai Elantra GT this year - along with the end of the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 previously - leave a scant few options for fans of subcompacts here in the US. </p><p>Despite the Yaris being a favorite among lovers of small cars, it <a href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-motor-north-america-reports-december-2019-year-end-sales/">hasn't sold well</a> in the US as of late. Fewer than 22,000 of them rolled off of dealer lots in 2019, as compared with 304,850 Corollas, 336,978 Camrys, and 448,071 Rav4 crossovers. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Porsche" title_caption="Porsche Cars North America president and CEO Klaus Zellmer with the Porsche 911." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56fc46d852bcd020008b9b95-960/_f9r5882.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Porsche</span></p><p class="caption">Porsche Cars North America president and CEO Klaus Zellmer with the Porsche 911.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Porsche's US business had an eventful year in 2015.</p><p>The company opened a new, $100 million headquarters in Atlanta and sold a record 51,756 cars. <br /><br />It also went through a major leadership change when - in November - Klaus Zellmer took over as president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America.</p><p>Zellmer - whose résumé include stints overseeing Porsche German as well as its developing markets - sat down for a chat with Business Insider at the 2016 New York auto show. </p><p>The Porsche executive touched on several topics including his company's booming SUV sales and the future of the brand.</p><p>At the show, Porsche unveiled its new 718 Boxster sports car as well as a special edition variant of the company's most enduring model dubbed the 911R.</p><p>The legendary German brand also rolled out the newest version of its best-selling <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-macan-affordable-2016-3" target="_blank">Macan crossover</a>. At $47,500, the 2.0 liter, 252 horsepower, four-cylinder variant of the Macan is the most affordable car the luxury performance brand sells in the US.</p><p>Here's are a few of the major takeaways from our sit down. </p><h2><strong>On the new Porsche Macan SUV:</strong></h2><p>Although the new Macan is likely to be a big hit among consumers, there are some in the industry that believe the less powerful and less pricey car may dilute Porsche's sporting reputation.</p><p>However, the <span>Zellmer</span> believes the more affordable version of the SUV lives up to the company's exacting standards.</p><p>"As with all things in life there are a lot of drivers behind our decision to build the car," Zellmer said. Yes. Of course. This car is there to enhance our success as a company. But we're not bending the DNA of Porsche. We'll never ever do that."</p><h2><strong>On balancing brand mystique and with the reality of selling cars:</strong></h2><p>"I think it's important to have a sustainable business case for Porsche overall. Of course you need a certain bandwidth of products on offer that sell in good times and in bad times. Again, we want to be the most aspirational brand. When we introduce a model on the lower end of the price and performance spectrum, we always have to make sure to strike a balance on the other end," Zellmer said.</p><p>When Porsche introduced the Macan in 2013, almost simultaneously, the company also introduced its million-dollar 918 hybrid hypercar.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Porsche" title_caption="Porsche 918." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/563d1933bd86ef1d5d8bce9f-960/2015 porsche 918 spyder _24_.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Porsche</span></p><p class="caption">Porsche 918.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"It's not a coincidence that we are here in New York with a four-cylinder Macan and next to it is a 911R," Zellmer said in reference to the ultra-exclusive $200,000 version of the 911 sports car that's parked next to the relatively bank account friendly Macan SUV. </p><h2><strong>On the whether there is such a thing as a too affordable</strong>:</h2><p>In recent years, Porsche's German rivals at BMW and Mercedes-Benz along with corporate sibling Audi have introduced lower priced models aimed at reaching younger, but less affluent buyers. With a price point starting at roughly $30,000, the BMW 2-Series, Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 have certainly helped the companies in terms of sales, but some have questioned whether the tactic will dilute the value and exclusivity of the respective brands. </p><p>"I think there is a certain price barrier you cannot undercut if you want your brand to stay exclusive and that barrier is different for every make whether that's BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche," Zellmer said. "I'm of the opinion that going to $30,000 is not feasible (for Porsche) as we speak." </p><p>Although Zellmer added the caveat that it is possible more stringent fuel economy standards and emissions standards may one day force the brand to offer smaller and more affordable engines options in its cars. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Porsche" title_caption="Zellmer with Porsche 718 Boxster S." class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56fd614e9105842b008b9e6e-960/2_dsc1185.jpg"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Porsche</span></p><p class="caption">Zellmer with Porsche 718 Boxster S.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"Currently, the price floor for Porsche's line up is between $45,ooo to $50,000 depending on the exchange rate and region of the world," Zellmer added. </p><p>"It's quite a high barrier."</p><h2><strong>On whether selling so many SUVs is good for Porsche's image</strong>:</h2><p>For a company whose mystique is built on its racing track record and iconic sports cars, Porsche sell SUVs in droves. In fact, nearly 70% of all Porsches that rolled out of its showrooms worldwide last year were SUVs. Thus, there may be a disconnect between the company's image and the realities of its product mix. </p><p>"You always have to be aware of what perception you create and yes, the majority of our cars are not the typical sports cars people expect," Zellmer said.  "But if you drive SUVs from our competitors, and then drive the Macan and Cayenne, you'll see that the Porsche is the sports car in the segment."</p><p>"And this is what we aim for. Yes, we are capitalizing on the potential of the SUV market, but we are delivering it with a sports car experience. Porsche is changing to the way you think about sports cars

Aston's current lineup is comprised exclusively of thirsty V8 and V12-engined cars.</p><p>2) Aston believes there's room in the market for an ultra-luxury electric vehicle that operates in a segment above the top-of-the-line Tesla Model S.</p><p>The electric Rapide is expected to pack 800 horsepower with all-wheel-drive, and a range of 200 miles on a single charge. With 800hp on tap, the electric Aston could put up performance numbers on par with Tesla's 762 horsepower P90D.</p><p>Still, the Aston has some drawbacks compared with Tesla's Model S. Its expected 200 mile range lags behind the 300 miles Tesla is able to achieve, and the electric Rapide sedan is expected to set buyers back between $200,000 and $250,000. Tesla recently introduced Ludicrous Mode -which allows the Model S P90D to hit 60 mph in a hypercar-shaming 2.8 seconds- to great fanfare.  However, Palmer is not impressed. </p><p>The Aston Martin boss told Undercoffler that his company won't "<span>do Ludicrous because Ludicrous speed is stupid." Instead of pure straight-line speed, Palmer claims the electric Astons will aim deliver a complete driving experience with track capable speed and handling. </span></p><p>Aston Martin has not released any specific technical details regarding the Rapide's electric drivetrain. But it doesn't go easy on the gas, getting only 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. </p><p>Several automakers have launched high-performance luxury electric cars since Tesla burst onto the scene (none have achieved the success of the Model S). Audi introduced an all-electric version of its R8 supercar, called the R8 e-tron, in Geneva this year. And a couple of years ago, Mercedes-Benz rolled out a pure electric variant of the SLS.
