Shillong, Apr 18 () Meghalaya Chief Minister ConradK Sangma on Saturday said the condition of all 10 COVID-19patients in the state was stable as of now.Meghalaya has a total of 11 COVID-19 cases and thefirst coronavirus positive patient Dr John L Sailo has died.Eight members of the family of Dr Sailo have testedpositive for COVID-19. Two of their domestic help have alsotested positive ."All the COVID-19 positive persons are stable. Thefamily was observing quarantine at home while the two othersare admitted at the COVID-19 hospital," he said.He said as of Saturday, 738 samples have been sent fortesting and 667 have tested negative. The results of 60 othersare awaited.The chief Minister also reviewed the state'spreparedness in tackling Covid-19 pandemic in the state andvisited corona care centre at the IIM-Shillong campus here.According to the chief minister, all asymptotic casesand asymptomatic individuals who have visited Bethany Hospitalafter March 24 and have registered with the government are notbeing tested currently.He said that all those individuals should go formandatory home quarantine for at least 14 days and in casethey develop symptoms they should call the helpline number108.On case management protocol, the chief minister said,"All the asymptomatic category A and mild symptomatic categoryB positive patients do not require hospitalisation. As per theprotocol issued by the MoHFW they should be either in homequarantine or they can opt to be shifted to the governmentdesignated Corona Care centre by calling 108."He also said that in case the patients do not havespace for themselves to self isolate at home, they can availfacilities of the government."Existing evidence shows that 80 per cent of thepositive cases across the world fall under category A andcategory B", the chief minister said, adding, "Severe andsymptomatic cases having respiratory distress, breathingdifficulty requiring oxygen support fall under category C andthey would be treated at the designated hospital".He also informed that severe symptomatic cases withother comorbidity conditions and requiring ventilator and ICUsupport is category D would be treated at designated hospitalshaving such facilities like the Civil Hospital, Dr. H. GordonRoberts Hospital Care, Shillong and Nazareth Hospital.On farming activities, the chief minister said,"Products like areca nut, beetle leaf and broom sticks will beallowed to transport to different markets with restriction,and transportation outside the state will not be allowed." Shillong, May 6 () Meghalaya Chief Minister ConradK Sangma has constituted a task force to revive the economy ofthe state post-COVID-19 pandemic situation, an official saidon Wednesday.The Chief Ministers Task Force on the Economy forpost-COVID Meghalaya was formed to mitigate the impact of theongoing pandemic on the economy of the state, the officialsaid.The task force will have three committees, the apexcommittee and the executive committee will be chaired by ChiefMinister Conrad K Sangma, chief secretary M S Rao said.While the apex committee will have all cabinetministers as members, the executive committee will have deputychief minister Prestone Tynsong, Industries minister S Dharand Agriculture minister Banteidor Lyngdoh as members besidesNEC secretary K Moses, Farmers commission chairperson K NKumar, Prof David Syiemlieh, Prof Stefan Dercon and IIMShillong chairman Shishir Bajoria.A third committee, which will consist of workinggroups to be headed by government officials, will also beconstituted, Rao said.Meghalaya has till date reported 12 cases of COVID-19.One person has died while 10 others have recovered.About 15,000 people of Meghalaya stranded in otherparts of the country due to the lockdown are coming home intwo phases, the official added. Meghalaya CM constitutes task force to revive the economy of the state

Shillong, Jun 24 () Four more persons have recovered from COVID-19 in Meghalaya, taking the total number of coronavirus cured patients in the state to 41, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said. Only four active COVID-19 cases are now in Meghalaya as 41 people have recovered from the disease, he said. "4 more persons from West Jaintia Hills have recovered and test negative for COVID19. Total cases 46. Total Active cases 4 Total recovered 41," the chief minister tweeted on Tuesday night. One person has died of COVID-19 in the state. With the recovery of the four patients, the recovery rate in Meghalaya is close to 90 per cent, a senior Health department official said. "This is by far the best record for a state in India. We have the least COVID-19 cases till date and the best recovery rate," the official said. A total of 16,931 samples collected from returnees were sent for testing, of which 16,585 were negative while test reports of 300 are awaited, the official added. JOP RG RG

4 more persons recover from COVID-19 in Meghalaya: CM

Shillong, April 17 () Chief Minister Conrad KSangma on Friday said 4,000 COVID-19 rapid test kits have beenallocated to Meghalaya as the health authorities are battlingto zero in on the carrier into the state.The wife of the first COVID-19 patient and six othersof her family members are under home quarantine, while theirmaid who also tested positive is undergoing treatment at ahospital, he said, adding that they all are stable.The state has been allocated 4,000 rapid test kits.We are trying to get more, he said in an address to thepress.The chief minister said that 140 primary contacts ofJohn L Sailo Ryntathiangs family and those at BethanyHospital have been identified, and 4,755 secondary contactshave also been traced.Sailo, 69, died on Wednesday of the infection.Sangma said samples collected from 541 persons have sofar tested negative and the reports of 67 persons are awaited.A total of 23,382 persons have been screened till dateand 2,557 are observing quarantine, he said.In his address, the chief minister said that over9,300 labourers were provided Rs 3,000 each under the Buildingand Other Construction Workers Act and over 25,800 farmers inthe state have been given Rs 2,000 each under the PM KisanYojana since the lockdown began.Over 1.36 lakh labourers have registered for specialassistance grant of Rs 2,100 and 1.16 lakh labourers have beenverified for the same, he said.Over 6,000 persons from the state stranded across thecountry have registered for the CM's special grant and theauthorities have verified 458 persons so far, he said.Sangma said that the state has received 3.65 lakhreusable masks, 15,072 N95 masks and 29,084 PPEs for thefrontline health workers. These are simple rules which will help you to protect your family," he said on Thursday. On the number of BSF personnel in the state getting infected, the chief minister said whatever is happening is within the BSF camp and it is in a controlled manner. He said the restrictions on inter-state movement does not include citizens of the state who are stranded outside and government employees including paramilitary forces who are coming back. Meghalaya CM announces a fine of ₹500 if anyone is caught violating COVID 19 protocols

<ul><li>While the rescue of the 15 miners stuck in a ‘rat hole’ mine in the eastern state of Meghalaya in India since December 13, 2018, is still underway, two more incidents of <keyword id="6367140" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="illegal-mining">illegal mining</keyword> have come to light. </li><li>Two miners have lost their lives in one of the incidents, while three more are stuck in another ‘rat hole’ mine. </li><li>Government officials in Meghalaya have repeatedly denied any knowledge of illegal mining in the state after the ban implemented in 2014. </li><li>But the chief minister of the state quickly turned on his words after the first incident took place. </li><li>Data shows that administrative oversight is one of the primary reasons this problem was allowed to continue for so long.</li></ul>While the Indian government is still struggling to rescue the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-supreme-court-expresses-dissatisfaction-instructs-government-to-get-the-miners-out-dead-or-alive/articleshow/67257937.cms">15 rat hole miners</a> stuck in the eastern Indian state of Meghalaya, two more incidents of illegal mining in state paint a disturbing picture. The issue is not only about the prevalence of illegal mining but the resultant loss of life due to the risk involved and lax security regulations. The first incident is where two miners <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/2-dead-as-another-meghalaya-mine-collapses-rescue-stumbles-at-older-site-1973517">died</a> as a result of a ‘side cutting’ mine collapsing on top of them. The second is where three miners have been trapped in another ‘rat hole’ mine in the area for nearly nine days <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/boulders-fall-in-meghalaya-mine-kill-two/article25927321.ece">according</a> to the locals in the area. Questions for politicians Meghalaya has always maintained that the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014 was effectively implemented. But after the mining incident of December 13, 2018, where 15 miners are still stuck in a ‘rat hole’ mine — their story seems to be changing. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/north-east/dec-report-admits-to-illegal-mining-in-meghalaya/cid/1681055">admitted</a> to knowing about the illegal mining in Meghalaya only after the incident took place. Earlier that year, when there were allegations of illegal mining activity in Meghalaya, he denied all charges.

 Reports also show that over the past four years — despite the coal mining ban being in place — over 2,700 trucks have seized containing coal even though only about 1,100 cases were actually registered. Experts <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/editorials/meghalaya-rat-hole-mining-tragedy-politicians-have-a-lot-to-answer-for/story-eiALqenJkbeggHDatUsEfM.html">cite</a> the prevalence of mining in Meghalaya to three reasons. One, that these ‘risky’ mining practices are also cheaper than conventional methods lacking the usual safety requirements. Two, there is political support in place. And, three, the local community needs the job opportunity since they are mostly migrants from neighboring states. The fact that the mines are privately owned makes it even harder to keep track of where they are, who owns them or even of their exact number. So rather than illegal mining in Meghalaya being a surprise, it was more of administrative oversight that allowed the phenomenon to continue. More illegal mining in India — the state of Meghalaya has more questions than answers

(Eds: Updating with details, Meghalaya CM's tweet) New Delhi, Apr 27 () Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a video conference with chief ministers to discuss the situation arising due to COVID-19 in the country, which is under a 50-day lockdown since March 25 to contain the pandemic, even as Meghalaya said it will continue with the shutdown post May 3 with relaxations in 'Green Zones' or non-COVID affected districts.This is Modi's fourth such interaction with state chief ministers since March 22 when he first spoke to them on the coronavirus situation and steps taken --both by the Centre and the states-- to contain the pandemic. Two days later on March 24, Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown. He extended the lockdown till May 3 on April 14, the last day of the initial three week shutdown.Among those present at the virtual meet, included Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and top officials from the PMO and Union Health Ministry.The chief ministers who attended the meeting included Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi), Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala), Uddhav Thackeray (Maharashtra), E K Palaniswami (Tamil Nadu), Conard Sangma (Meghalaya) Trivendram Singh Rawat (Uttarakhand) and Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh). "At the video conference called by the hon'ble PM Modiji and hon'ble Home Minister Shahji. We have mooted to continue with the lockdown post May 3rd with relaxation on activities in Green Zones or non-COVID affected districts in Meghalaya," Sangma tweeted.The prime minister was wearing a white 'gamcha' (Indian stole for men) with green border. He has been using 'gamcha' to cover his face during such meets.Sources in the government had on Sunday indicated that besides discussing the way forward in dealing with the pandemic, the prime ministers and chief ministers could also focus on a "graded" exit from the lockdown.In a tweet on Monday, the Prime Minister's Office said Modi and the chief ministers will be discussing aspects relating to the COVID-19 situation.In his monthly 'Mann ki Baat' radio address on Sunday, the prime minister said the country is in the middle of a 'yudh' (war) and asserted that people have to continue being careful and take precautions.His note of caution came amidst gradual exemptions being granted by the Centre and states to revive economic activities. "I urge you not to get overconfident. You should in your over-enthusiasm not think that if the coronavirus has not yet reached your city, village, street or office, it is not going to reach now. Never make such a mistake. The experience of the world tells us a lot in this regard," Modi said while referring to a popular Hindi idiom 'Sawdhani hati, durghatna ghati' (disaster strikes when you lower your concentration).
