Amazon Mega Fashion Weekend Sale: Top deals and discounts

JEFFERIES: 4 reasons Tiffany will continue to shine

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>The Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots for this weekend's drawings are both over $300 million.</strong></li><li><strong>If the historical relationship between prize sizes and ticket sales holds, there's a pretty good chance no one will win the jackpot this weekend, but someone could get lucky.</strong></li></ul><p><br />This is an interesting week for lottery fans, as both of the big multi-state lotteries have jackpot prizes over $300 million. The <a href="http://www.megamillions.com/">Mega Millions</a> lottery has an estimated prize of $306 million before its Friday evening drawing, while <a href="http://www.powerball.com/pb_home.asp">Powerball</a> has a prize of about $384 million for its Saturday drawing, as of the time of this writing.</p><p>Business Insider looked at why mathematically <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/powerball-mega-millions-jackpot-over-300-million-expected-value-2017-12">it might not be a sound financial idea to buy a ticket</a> for one of those lotteries, despite the large headline jackpot prizes. The odds of any particular person winning the jackpot are very slim: 1 in 292,201,338 for Powerball, and 1 in 302,575,350.</p><p>But millions of tickets will still be sold for chances to win those prizes, and so we decided to look at how likely someone, somewhere in the country will actually win.</p><p>The number of jackpot winners in a lottery is a textbook example of a<span> </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_distribution">binomial distribution</a>, a formula from basic probability theory. If we repeat some probabilistic process some number of times, and each repetition has some fixed probability of "success" as opposed to "failure," the binomial distribution tells us how likely we are to have a particular number of successes.</p><p>In our case, the process is filling out a lottery ticket, the number of repetitions is the number of tickets sold, and the probability of success is the 1-in-292,201,338 chance, for Powerball, of getting a jackpot-winning ticket. Of course, not every player will do this, and it's possible some numbers are chosen more frequently than others. If one of these more popular numbers is drawn on Saturday night, the odds of splitting the jackpot will be slightly higher. Still, the above graph gives us at least a good idea of the chances for different numbers of winners.</p><p>Of course, our above binomial distribution is dependent on knowing how many people actually are buying tickets for this week's jackpots. We won't know that exact number until after the draws actually happen. However, we can try to make a guess based on historical trends.</p><p>LottoReport.com maintains an <a href="http://www.lottoreport.com/ticketcomparison.htm">archive of jackpot sizes and ticket sales</a> for Mega Millions and Powerball drawings. Looking at Powerball drawings from 2017, we can see that there is a relationship between the size of the jackpot and the number of ticket sales. This makes sense - bigger prizes bring more attention and entice more buyers to jump into the pot.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.lottoreport.com/ticketcomparison.htm">Business Insider/Andy Kiersz, data from LottoReport.com</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Looking at that chart, we can see that lottery drawings in the approximate range of Saturday's $384 million jackpot have tended to bring in between around 30 and 50 million tickets sold.</p><p>If 30 million tickets are sold, the binomial distribution model above suggests about a <strong>90.2% chance no one wins</strong> and the jackpot rolls over, a <strong>9.3% chance of exactly one winner</strong>, and roughly a <strong>0.5% chance of a split jackpot</strong>.</p><p>If sales are on the higher end and 50 million tickets are sold, that slightly increases the odds of at least one winner. The likelihood that <strong>no one wins drops to about 84.3%</strong>, the chance of <strong>exactly one winner goes up to 14.4%</strong>, and the chance of <strong>more than one winner remains small at about 1.3%</strong>.</p><p>Of course, there are a lot of assumptions going into those numbers, so they should naturally be taken with a grain of salt. Here's how likely it is there will be a winner in the Powerball drawing on Saturday

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Chaiwat Subprasom/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">An abandoned department store is seen flooded in Bangkok</p></div><p></p></div></div><keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">Retail</keyword> companies are struggling.</p><p>On Wednesday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macys-earnings-and-guidance-2016-5">Macy's reported dismal earnings</a> and the entire industry is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/retail-stocks-getting-annihilated-2016-5">sinking in the markets</a>.</p><p>As if there needed to be anything else, <a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/site/fitch-home/pressrelease?id=1004294">Fitch Ratings cut the grade </a>on mega-retailer Gap's debt into junk territory at BB+.</p><p>In the decision, the rating agency did an impressively succinct job at describing the massive amounts of problems facing big-box retailers right now.</p><p><a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/site/fitch-home/pressrelease?id=1004294">Here's Fitch</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">Gap operates in a challenging mid-market apparel sector, which has been characterized by lack of a strong product cycle and sales bifurcation to higher-end aspirational brands and lower-end fast fashion and off-price channels. Gap and its peers have seen volatile sales results and have needed to use significant omnichannel investments and higher-than-expected markdowns to drive sales.</p><p>Let's break that down.</p><p>First, there's product problems. Consumers have been increasingly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-fashion-companies-are-selling-expensive-clothes-2016-1">spurning the product mix offered</a> at large department stores like Macy's and mid-market retailers such as Gap. Tastes, and wallets, have instead shifted to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-is-killing-traditional-retailers-2016-2">cheaper fast fashion products</a> and high-end stores.</p><p>In turn, this has hurt Gap and others bottom lines and spurred costly investments in stores in order to attract more customers. In fact, stores such as Macy's, Nordstrom, and others have all attempted to attract customers at different, more popular price points by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macys-putting-discount-outlets-in-stores-2016-1">creating fast fashion-type stores </a>such as Nordstrom Rack and Macy's Backstage.</p><p>Additionally, these retailers are also being forced to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-ceo-seismic-change-in-retail-2016-1">invest in growing their online segment</a> as more shoppers are shifting online. The problem is, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/michael-kors-ceo-biggest-retial-challenge-2016-2">online sales have a lower profit margin</a> and the technology investments needed are costly.</p><p>Basically, one solution to slower sales has been to spend more on capital investments to chase where customers are actually shopping, whether it be destination or price point.</p><p>The other solution that Fitch hits on is markdowns. In order to move the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/retail-sales-inventory-ratio-2016-2">large back-up of inventory</a> many of these companies have built up, they've been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nordstroms-earnings-signal-major-problems-2016-2">forced to mark down prices</a> to move the products. This leads to lower margins and worse results.</p><p>Fitch hits all of these issues in one paragraph: changing tastes, costly investments, and necessary markdowns. One paragraph nails everything wrong with big-box retailers like Gap and Macy's

According to media reports, it will seek about $1.5 billion and has started the process of identifying potential investors.<br />
 <br /> The <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> giant has raised about $1.2 billion this year. It had recently held festival sales, giving steep discounts. Following the mega festive season sale in October, during which it shipped about 80 lakh items as compared to 50 lakh on average, Flipkart has revised its internal target to reach sales worth $4 billion by the end of the current financial year.<br />

The Bangalore-based company is looking to increase the number of product categories in which they have leadership. "It has built a lead in fashion with the Myntra acquisition. The same push needs to happen across categories," said Manish Saigal, managing director at advisory firm Alvarez and Marsal.<br />

This is less than 15% of Amazon's total sales, which were $232.9 billion overall, CNBC reports. <p><keyword id="6491082" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="mega">Mega</keyword> debuted exactly one year after New Zealand authorities <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/1810015/inside-megauploads-megamind-kim-dotcoms-playboy-bunnies-russian-nuclear-vessels-and-private-">arrested Dotcom on charges of</a> racketeering, copyright infringement, and money laundering in connection to a similar service called <keyword id="310119" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Megaupload">Megaupload</keyword>. Megaupload was shut down.</p>
<p>Mega is very similar to Dropbox, letting you upload files to an online locker and download them again later.</p>
<p><span>Mega users start off with 50 GB of free cloud storage and have the option to purchase more.</span></p>

However, </span><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2013/01/21/researchers-warn-megas-new-encrypted-cloud-cant-keep-its-megasecurity-promises/">Andy Greenberg of Forbes</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> did some digging and found that might be the case:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">But the security community knows that the boldest claims about new encryption technology demand the most scrutiny. And some crypto researchers are already punching holes in the secure lining of Mega’s cloud.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">“It’s a nice website, but when it comes to cryptography they seem to have no experience,” says Nadim Kobeissi, a 22-year old cryptographer and creator of the secure chat software Cryptocat, who began poring over the public portions Mega’s code as soon as it debuted over the weekend. “Quite frankly it felt like I had coded this in 2011 while drunk."</p>
<p>Because of the huge demand and coverage surrounding Mega this weekend, it's pretty difficult to get access right now.</p>
<p>It took a few tries, but we were finally able to create an account. Our first impression of Mega is pretty lukewarm. We don't see it as something we can't live without, but we're still optimistic that more <keyword id="35660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="features">features</keyword> are on the way that can make Mega a viable competitor to Dropbox and other file-storage services.</p>

Amazon Business, its office supply sales channel, recently announced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-business-shows-growth-in-first-year-2016-5">that it's sold over $1 billion worth of products</a>, just a year after its launch. For many, this also means trading heels for sneakers.</p><p>The casual trend has even made its way into one of the most traditionally formal items of clothing, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/casual-wedding-dresses-hurts-davids-bridal-2018-2">wedding</a> dress.&#xa0;</p><p><span>In 2017, sales of high heels declined 11%, according to&#xa0;NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/18/sneaker-sales-are-growing-as-sales-of-high-heels-tumble.html">CNBC</a> reported. Meanwhile, women's sneaker sales were up 37% in the same period.&#xa0;</span></p><p>There may be other reasons for this trend, however. In December, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/16/fashion/the-end-of-high-heels.html">The New York Times</a>&#xa0;investigated why high heels have fallen out of favor for many women and concluded that it could be linked in part to the #MeToo era and reports of sexual harassment. Serena Williams wore sneakers to the royal wedding after-party, and it's a sign of a major shift in women's fashion

<p>iPhone day is here at last. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/line-for-iphone-6-2014-9">lines for the iPhone 6 are insane at the Apple Store</a>. They're decent at carrier stores too. </p>
<p>So, now the question becomes how many phones will Apple sell this weekend? Or, perhaps more importantly, how many does it have to announce it sold to make investors happy?</p>
<p><span>We spoke with Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray about opening weekend iPhone sales on Thursday, before the new iPhone was in stores. </span></p>
<p>Here's the bottom line:</p>
<ul>
<li><span>If Apple announces a mega number, and reports suggest that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were impossible to get, then it's a major positive for Apple. </span></li>
<li><span>If Apple announces a smaller number like 7 million, </span><span>and reports suggest that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were impossible to get, then it's good for Apple, but people will freak out. The stock could drop on Monday, but recover.</span></li>
<li><span>If Apple announces a gigantic number like 15 million, then there's some reason to be suspicious, but the stock will probably pop.</span></li>
<li><span>If Apple announces nothing, then something is amiss and the stock will get hit.</span></li>
</ul>
<p>Munster has a relatively low estimate for opening weekend sales - just 6.5 million. Walt Piecyk at BTIG <a href="http://www.btigresearch.com/2014/09/18/first-weekend-iphone-predictions-and-how-much-apple-could-rally/">estimates</a> Apple sells 10 million. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Last year, Apple said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-5s-5c-opening-weekend-sales-2013-9">it sold 9 million units over the weekend</a>. But, Munster says t<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-opening-weekend-iphone-6-sales-expectations-2014-9">hose sales numbers were inflated because of the iPhone 5C</a>. </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Apple sold the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S last year. The 5C replaced the iPhone 5. That means Apple took the iPhone 5 out of all retail channels, and replaced it with the 5C. Filling the "channel" with the iPhone 5C led to an inflated opening weekend number for Apple.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Apple sold 9 million iPhones into the channel, but it didn't necessarily sell them through to the customer. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As a result, this year's opening weekend iPhone sales are going to be hard to compare to last year's. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Munster thinks Apple sold <span>5.4 million iPhone 5S units last year. So, if Apple sells 6.5 million iPhone 6 units this year, then it's 20% year-over-year growth, but some people might not realize it because of last year's skewed number.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>However, Munster also cautions that a giant opening weekend number isn't necessarily a good thing, either. If Apple comes out on Monday and says it sold 15 million iPhone 6s, then Munster thinks investors will see that as channel fill. </span></span></p>
<p>This year, Apple is selling an iPhone 6, which has a 4.7-inch screen and an iPhone 6 Plus, which has a 5.5-inch screen. The leaks leading up to the announcement of the iPhone 6 suggest that Apple was manufacturing a lot of iPhone 6s. The 6 Plus seems to be harder to make and is more scarce.</p>
<p>If there are anecdotal reports of people going to Apple stores over the weekend and being able to get an iPhone 6 without any trouble, and then Apple announces a giant number for sales, some people with shrug and think it's channel fill.</p>

<p>Not that channel fill is the worst thing since Apple will eventually sell the phone. It's just that the opening weekend can be manipulated and might not be the best indicator of demand. </p>
<p>Munster thinks that pre-orders are the truest measure, and Apple announces strong pre-orders of 4 million. </p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The stores that did the best on Black Friday are all discounters, revealing that Americans are more concerned about saving money than ever. </span></p>

<h3><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">2. Family Dollar. </span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The dollar chain was the most surprising winner on Black Friday, according to Deutsche Bank analysts. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Family Dollar's key to success this year was a buy one, get one free toy sale. Last year, the chain offered buy one, get one 70% off on toys. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The deal brought in many budget-conscious consumers, according to the firm.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">3. Wal-Mart.</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">While Wal-Mart's results weren't as impressive as Kohl's or Family Dollar, the analysts still believe it deserves a shout-out. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The mega-retailer "</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">performed </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">very well in-store and impressed us with substantial sell-through on Black  </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Friday deals in electronics," the analysts wrote. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Wal-Mart's aggressive discounting in stores and online made it a winner for Black Friday.</span></p>
