They say ‘if one door closes, another one open up’, and that pretty much sums up the events that are almost in place to get underway. <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>’s <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> devices acquisition has come at a cost for over 18,000 or so employees and with the Windows-maker looking to integrate some of those personnel to its newer set-up, it signals the end for the unwanted. But there’s still hope for the ones who have been chucked out. 
 <keyword id="1458895" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jolla">Jolla</keyword>, the company formed by ex-Nokia employees is on the prowl for any possible recruits from within the set of people who have been shown the door at Microsoft. The current Jolla set-up, was once responsible for creating <keyword id="112219" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="MeeGo">MeeGo</keyword> operating platform that was only seen on the Nokia N9 many years back and after Nokia’s decision to go with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform for its devices, it spelt doom for MeeGo and the team entrusted with creating the platform. 
 
But now, Jolla is looking to score one over Microsoft Devices Group (or Nokia) by looking to get them on board and create a better equipped device and ecosystem to fight out against the might of Android and iOS. “What comes to the Microsoft job cuts: majority of our employees have a Nokia background, and we are always interested in new talent," Jolla Head of Communications Juhani Lassila was quoted saying in a PTI report. 
 
It remains to be seen whether Jolla has its eye on any particular set of employees or does it include the ones (around 3,000 or so) from India, considering they are expected to up their ante in the country in the coming months with the news of <a href="http://www.gizmodo.in/indiamodo/JollaSmartphone-Running-On-Sailfish-OS-Coming-Soon-To-India/articleshow/38612854.cms">Jolla smartphone coming to India</a>.

Waiting In The Wings. Jolla Looking To Hire Laid-Off Nokia

<keyword id="215955" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Intex-Technologies">Intex Technologies</keyword> is coming up with a 4G smartphone in November that will be powered by Finland-based <keyword id="1458895" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jolla">Jolla</keyword>'s Sailfish operating system (OS). This will be in the sub-10K price range. 

	The home-grown mobile handset player has tied up with Jolla and has become the first licensing partner for the OS, reported PTI. 
 Intex Technologies head, mobile business, <keyword id="1854595" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sanjay-Kalirona">Sanjay Kalirona</keyword> said at the Mobile World Congress that the company will launch the first Sailfish device in November. 

	"With an open platform like Sailfish OS, we have a magnificent opportunity to offer great locally relevant premium content to our customers, all integrated directly into the smartphone's operating system," Kalirona said.
 Jolla, founded in 2011 by ex-<keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> employees, is the developer of Sailfish, which is an independent OS based on MeeGo platform, developed by Nokia and <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword>. The first smartphone on MeeGo platform came out in 2007. 

	Nokia later in 2011 shelved the MeeGo platform and launched phones based on Windows. 
 

	The first Sailfish OS mobile product, the Jolla Smartphone, was introduced in November 2013. 
 

	"In our BRICS country strategy, we have been proceeding fastest in India, which is one the most important markets in the future of mobiles. We have seen a lot of interest among Indian mobile device manufacturers and operators, and they are all very keen to work with an alternative to the currently dominating mobile operating systems," said Antti Saarnio, Jolla executive chairman. 
 The Sailfish OS also supports <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> applications.

Wait till November for Intex’s 4G smartphone with Sailfish OS

If you are bored of the existing operating system and what they have to offer, then there is some news coming your way. <keyword id="1458895" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jolla">Jolla</keyword> sailfish smartphones are all set to be available in India. 
 A little background on Jolla, for people who are not aware about the same, this is developed by set of engineers who were working with <keyword id="6354716" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nokia">Nokia</keyword> to develop a MeeGo-derived OS called Sailfish. 
 
Featuring a 4.5-inch display, dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, 4G, 16GB of onboard storage, and a microSD slot, its most obvious physical feature is the contrasting removable back cover. The phone recognizes which cover is attached and changes its colored theming to match, but the subtly different shaping of the two parts is what actually makes it interesting from a design perspective. 
 So far the Jolla <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smartphone">Smartphone</keyword> was available only in <keyword id="6374076" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Finland">Finland</keyword>, along with handful of European countries. In Europe, the smartphone is available via company’s official stores for EUR 399. In India, the smartphone will be available via online retailer <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>.

A GLOBAL SMARTPHONE FORCE: Lei Jun, chairman of the Chinese upstart smartphone maker Xiaomi, took to Sina Weibo on Thursday to tell the public that Xiaomi has plans to supply at least 40 million smartphones for the year in 2014.

In the second quarter of 2013, Xiaomi barely cracked the sixth-place spot in China for smartphone market share, just ahead of Apple. If it meets its goals for 2014, Xiaomi would become one of the top three smartphone vendors in <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/xiaomi-overtakes-apple-in-china-2013-8" target="_blank">China</a>, and would be competing alongside its Chinese smartphone vendor rivals ZTE, Lenovo, and Huawei in the <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/samsungs-smartphone-growth-slows-while-nokia-gains-the-most-market-share-2013-11" target="_blank">global smartphone market</a>. 
OUTPACING THE MARKET: While lofty, it may not be impossible. Jun also announced that Xiaomi had sold 18.7 million phones during 2013, which is growth of 160% over 2012 sales and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130415/meet-xiaomi-the-biggest-smartphone-company-youve-never-heard-of/" target="_blank">well above its own initial target of 15 million phones for the year</a>. 
But to sell 40 million phones next year, Xiaomi would have to more than double its shipments for a second consecutive year, with targeted growth of about 122%. This far exceeds the pace at which the global smartphone market is growing. Research firm <a href="http://www.canalys.com/newsroom/mobile-device-market-reach-26-billion-units-2016" target="_blank">Canalys</a> puts average annual smartphone growth to be somewhere around 18% through 2016. 
Xiaomi's strong performance in 2013 can be attributed to its ability to grasp onto a segment of the market in China that <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/can-the-iphone-compete-in-china-2013-12" target="_blank">gravitated toward cheaper Android handsets</a> during the year. If it can achieve this on a wider scale outside of China, Xiaomi could become a force on the global market as well. 40 MILLION PHONES: China's Xiaomi Has Lofty Goals For 2014

Today, Nokia <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-buys-nokia-devices-2013-9">is being sold off in pieces</a> and it's hard to see what could possibly topple <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>.
But Dr. Ronald Klingebiel, a professor at Warwick Business School, says that neither company is safe. A new crop of "cloud" smartphone operating systems are in the works and they offer these advantages:
<ul>
<li>Tons of apps. Apps would be written for the cloud, not a particular phone, similar to how PC cloud apps run in the browser on any PC like Windows, Macs or Linux.</li>
<li>Affordable phones: when the app runs in the cloud, the phones wouldn't need fast processors or a lot of memory, which would make them cheaper to produce.</li>
</ul>
Today, each of these new devices seem like a longshot: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsungs-plan-to-ditch-google-and-apple-2012-12">Samsung's Tizen</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mozilla-firefox-os-launching-in-phones-2013-7">Firefox OS,</a> the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ubuntu-edge-indiegogo-campaign-2013-8">Ubuntu Edge</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/some-wonder-if-this-is-the-next-big-smartphone-platform-2012-11">Sailfish OS</a> but Klingebiel says that, collectively, they could peel away a lot of market share.
Business Insider: There are a lot of alternative operating systems, which ones do you think are most likely to be successful and why?
Ronald Klingebiel: All four take an approach that would make apps interoperable across, so in that sense, all four can be successful. It's just that the companies behind them cannot expect anymore to generate the sort of profits that Apple has been generating from vertically integrating handsets-OS-app store.
Each entrant takes a slightly different angle. <keyword id="786876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tizen">Tizen</keyword> could benefit from a Samsung all-in. Firefox aims to build a base at the low end of the market. <keyword id="353838" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ubuntu">Ubuntu</keyword> aims to leverage the Linux PC community and unify phone and computing device. Sailfish pitches to aficionados, who appreciated Nokia's and MeeGo's quality solutions.
Collectively they stand to capture a sizable piece of the market before too long.
BI: What part of the existing smartphone market do they threaten, high-end, low-end, feature phones? Why?
RK: All are smartphone OS. But soon, smartphones might turn to dumb phones that provide access to a smart cloud, i.e. apps on cellphones are just links to programs run in the cloud. No fancy processor needed. If this becomes the standard means of accessing apps on phones, it will impact all segments of the current smartphone market.
BI: When do you think these new phones will start to show their influence on the market?
RK: This development is still in its infancy and its success not guaranteed. But it could take off quickly. If only one big vendor, say Lenovo, committed to one of the new operating systems, it would boost the whole crop. Mobile operators are also keen to shake up the status quo. And big app developers such as Facebook may start to insist on writing apps only once (in standardized, interoperable programming language), leaving Apple and Google little choice but to open up their app stores. Disruptions have a knack of taking incumbents by surprise.

Will Google Glass Disrupt The Smartphone Wars?

The memo describes in brutal terms how Elop saw Nokia's business - as an oil rig that's on fire, forcing workers to jump into the North Sea. Clinging to a "burning platform" only means certain death, in Elop's thinking.
The memo presaged <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-heres-why-we-jumped-off-the-burning-platform-into-the-frigid-north-sea-chose-windows-phone-7-2011-2">Nokia's joint venture with Microsoft</a>, in which the phonemaker exclusively adopted Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Although the pair have since turned out some beautiful phones, such as the Lumia line, Nokia has continued to lose share to Apple, Samsung and others.
As this wonderful chart from Asymco indicates (above at right), even though Nokia jumped from its own "burning platform" onto Microsoft's, it may simply have jumped from a smaller burning platform onto a larger one. (Nokia is the pale green band that's getting narrower and narrower.)
The memo feels especially ominous if the rumors that Elop may succeed Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO turn out to be true: Which other Microsoft products might look like burning platforms to Elop?
We don't know if Elop agrees with this thinking. Today's deal is presumably a vote of confidence in Microsoft's ability to craft an operating system environment that will allow Nokia phones to thrive and grow.
Externally, of course, few see that happening.

There is a pertinent story about a man who was working on an oil platform in the North Sea. He woke up one night from a loud explosion, which suddenly set his entire oil platform on fire. In mere moments, he was surrounded by flames. Through the smoke and heat, he barely made his way out of the chaos to the platform's edge. When he looked down over the edge, all he could see were the dark, cold, foreboding Atlantic waters.
As the fire approached him, the man had mere seconds to react. He could stand on the platform, and inevitably be consumed by the burning flames. Or, he could plunge 30 meters in to the freezing waters. The man was standing upon a "burning platform," and he needed to make a choice.
He decided to jump. It was unexpected. In ordinary circumstances, the man would never consider plunging into icy waters. But these were not ordinary times - his platform was on fire. The man survived the fall and the waters. After he was rescued, he noted that a "burning platform" caused a radical change in his behaviour.
We too, are standing on a "burning platform," and we must decide how we are going to change our behaviour.
Over the past few months, I've shared with you what I've heard from our shareholders, operators, developers, suppliers and from you. Today, I'm going to share what I've learned and what I have come to believe.
I have learned that we are standing on a burning platform.
And, we have more than one explosion - we have multiple points of scorching heat that are fuelling a blazing fire around us.
For example, there is intense heat coming from our competitors, more rapidly than we ever expected. Apple disrupted the market by redefining the smartphone and attracting developers to a closed, but very powerful ecosystem.
In 2008, Apple's market share in the $300+ price range was 25 percent; by 2010 it escalated to 61 percent. They are enjoying a tremendous growth trajectory with a 78 percent earnings growth year over year in Q4 2010. Apple demonstrated that if designed well, consumers would buy a high-priced phone with a great experience and developers would build applications. They changed the game, and today, Apple owns the high-end range. And then, there is Android. In about two years, Android created a platform that attracts application developers, service providers and hardware manufacturers. Android came in at the high-end, they are now winning the mid-range, and quickly they are going downstream to phones under €100. Google has become a gravitational force, drawing much of the industry's innovation to its core.
Let's not forget about the low-end price range. In 2008, MediaTek supplied complete reference designs for phone chipsets, which enabled manufacturers in the Shenzhen region of China to produce phones at an unbelievable pace. By some accounts, this ecosystem now produces more than one third of the phones sold globally - taking share from us in emerging markets.
While competitors poured flames on our market share, what happened at Nokia? We fell behind, we missed big trends, and we lost time. At that time, we thought we were making the right decisions; but, with the benefit of hindsight, we now find ourselves years behind.
The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable.
We have some brilliant sources of innovation inside Nokia, but we are not bringing it to market fast enough. We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.
At the midrange, we have Symbian. It has proven to be non-competitive in leading markets like North America. Additionally, Symbian is proving to be an increasingly difficult environment in which to develop to meet the continuously expanding consumer requirements, leading to slowness in product development and also creating a disadvantage when we seek to take advantage of new hardware platforms. As a result, if we continue like before, we will get further and further behind, while our competitors advance further and further ahead.
At the lower-end price range, Chinese OEMs are cranking out a device much faster than, as one Nokia employee said only partially in jest, "the time that it takes us to polish a PowerPoint presentation." They are fast, they are cheap, and they are challenging us.
And the truly perplexing aspect is that we're not even fighting with the right weapons. We are still too often trying to approach each price range on a device-to-device basis.
The battle of devices has now become a war of ecosystems, where ecosystems include not only the hardware and software of the device, but developers, applications, ecommerce, advertising, search, social applications, location-based services, unified communications and many other things. Our competitors aren't taking our market share with devices; they are taking our market share with an entire ecosystem. This means we're going to have to decide how we either build, catalyse or join an ecosystem.
This is one of the decisions we need to make. In the meantime, we've lost market share, we've lost mind share and we've lost time.
On Tuesday, Standard &amp; Poor's informed that they will put our A long term and A-1 short term ratings on negative credit watch. This is a similar rating action to the one that Moody's took last week. Basically it means that during the next few weeks they will make an analysis of Nokia, and decide on a possible credit rating downgrade. Why are these credit agencies contemplating these changes? Because they are concerned about our competitiveness.
Consumer preference for Nokia declined worldwide. In the UK, our brand preference has slipped to 20 percent, which is 8 percent lower than last year. That means only 1 out of 5 people in the UK prefer Nokia to other brands. It's also down in the other markets, which are traditionally our strongholds: Russia, Germany, Indonesia, UAE, and on and on and on.
How did we get to this point? Why did we fall behind when the world around us evolved?
This is what I have been trying to understand. I believe at least some of it has been due to our attitude inside Nokia. We poured gasoline on our own burning platform. I believe we have lacked accountability and leadership to align and direct the company through these disruptive times. We had a series of misses. We haven't been delivering innovation fast enough. We're not collaborating internally.
Nokia, our platform is burning.
We are working on a path forward - a path to rebuild our market leadership. When we share the new strategy on February 11, it will be a huge effort to transform our company. But, I believe that together, we can face the challenges ahead of us. Together, we can choose to define our future.
The burning platform, upon which the man found himself, caused the man to shift his behaviour, and take a bold and brave step into an uncertain future. He was able to tell his story. Now, we have a great opportunity to do the same.

Executive vice president of mobile Lee Young-hee said that a high-end Tizen phone will be released in August or September. The fact that Lee calling out the phone as a high-end device is particularly notable. Why Mobile Advertising Should Soar This Year

When it comes to computer-related jobs, <a href="http://dpeaflcio.org/programs-publications/issue-fact-sheets/women-in-stem/">men outnumber women at a rate of about 4 to 1.</a>
And when it comes to the open-source software industry, women are even harder to find. A recent study found that <a href="http://floss2013.libresoft.es/">1 out 10 open-source programmers are women (about 10%)</a>, and that's up from 2007, <a href="http://flosspols.org/deliverables/D16HTML/FLOSSPOLS-D16-Gender_Integrated_Report_of_Findings.htm">when only 2 out of every 100 were women (about 2%).</a>
The lack of women gives the tech industry, and particularly the open-source portion of it, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/sexism">distinctly sexist feel.</a>
Despite these sad statistics, it is absolutely possible for a woman in the field to go far and have a fabulous career. So we asked the Linux Foundation, the granddaddy of all open-source projects, to give us a list of stand-out women doing fabulous work.
Linux is an operating system software (a competitor to Microsoft Windows) that is quietly running the world. It is the foundation of the Android operating system. It's the software behind a lot of consumer tech, from televisions to washing machines. It is used in nearly every corporate data center and on most supercomputers. It powers everything from banks to nuclear submarines.
So, here's our list of women with awesome careers working on Linux, the tech that's quietly running the world.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">Elena ZannoniElena Zannoni</div></div>Elena Zannoni, director of the Linux Tools and Languages team at Oracle.
Oracle is a big player in the Linux world, supplying its customers with a version of Linux based on Red Hat's Linux.
Zannoni came to the Linux world from years working on other open-source projects, starting at Cygnus Solutions bought by Red Hat and then eventually being hired away by Oracle. She's a regular Linux conference speaker, and she volunteers to organize the Linux Plumbers Conference.
She offers this advice to other women programmers: "I tried always to give my best without thinking too much about gender bias. One important thing is to not doubt oneself. There are plenty of other people that will undermine your confidence, no need for you to do it to yourself."

Linaro is a not-for-profit engineering organization bringing Linux to ARM devices. ARM is a chip that powers smartphones and tablets and is moving into corporate servers. 
Nguyen discovered Linux when studying digitial forensics and information security in college, she says.
"I didn't want go back to using Windows, and thought that a career in Linux was more fitting than becoming a digital forensics analyst."
She got more involved in the community through an internship <a href="https://wiki.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen">outreach program for women.</a> That helped her learn "how to overcome self-doubt, take risks, and accept feedback," in the often sharp-tongued open-source world.
"Some people in the Linux community will be blunt, yet I'm aware that they're critiquing my code, not my character. Even the most experienced Linux engineers are learning something new every day," she says.

Sharp is one of the best- known women in the Linux world today. She's been a Linux fan since 2003, as she <a href="http://sarah.thesharps.us/about-me/">describes on her blog,</a> and has led some high-profile projects like putting USB 3.0 support into Linux "before any other operating system, including Windows," she says.
Last summer, Sharp publicly took on Linux creator Linus Torvalds, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/geekess-calls-linus-torvalds-out-for-rants-2013-7">telling him to knock off the "verbal abuse"</a> that makes the Linux community so daunting for young programmers.
He responded with a humorous rant loaded with four-letter words.
But her point was well taken and raised awareness in the broader Linux community, particularly at commercial Linux companies like Red Hat, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/red-hat-ceo-cussing-at-employees-2013-9">CEO Jim Whitehurst told us.</a>

Acquia is the commercial arm of Drupal, a free open-source content management system for websites. Drupal is another hugely popular open-source project and is often used on servers running Linux. 
Byron has been a face in the open-source software world since 2011, when she was the first women to be <a href="http://thenextweb.com/ca/2011/02/26/angela-byron-will-be-the-first-woman-to-ever-hit-the-cover-of-linux-journal/#!ukdaF">featured on the cover of Linux Journal</a>. 

She's been involved with open source since the mid-'90s, she said, because she loves how it lets anyone "tinker with" software written by others.
"I've found that the community of folks I've encountered in Drupal, Linux and other open-source projects is also simply amazing: friendly, intelligent (but down to earth about it), hilarious, sincere, and endlessly passionate."


She wants newbies to know that there's "room for absolutely everyone to contribute to open source, regardless of skills and experience." Go ahead and contribute code with a "needs work" warning. "Fail early, fail often, and fail in public. Otherwise you risk never contributing because you'll never meet your own high standards of perfection," she says.

Bhattacharya has loved writing operating systems since she started her career in the '90s. She's worked on a bunch of them including the precursor to Linux, known as Unix, an earlier version of Windows (NT) and IBM's one-time Windows competitor OS/2. 
She was drawn to Linux by the "sheer joy" of working with so many people all hacking at something together.
Her advice for newbies is simply, "Go for it - it is a lot of fun! Just be yourself. Forget everything else and go play with the code."
While she says that it's good to "do your homework" before you submit your first bit of code to the Linux community, she always say "don't be afraid to learn, even stumble." No one, not even experts like her, always get everything right.
"Everyone is learning constantly from each other (occasionally shouting at each other just to get heard above the din :)," she says.

Yocto is a project at Intel that <a href="https://www.yoctoproject.org/ecosystem/showcase">creates custom versions of Linux</a> that can then run on all sorts of hardware devices.
Flanagan has been involved with open source for 20 years and loves it because "it has literally transformed how industry does business," she says. "Open source is everywhere. In our phones, in our cars, in our airplanes."
She's also known as an advocate for women in tech, sometimes known as "geek feminism."
Her advice is to first "find a project that speaks to your passion. Find out how that community works, what their engineering standards are ... and then find a place to start making improvements." It helps to find a mentor, too.
She also suggests that once you get involved, spend time helping "other women in technology, especially open source. "
Programs for that include the <a href="https://wiki.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen">Gnome Foundation's Outreach Program for Women</a>, the <a href="http://adainitiative.org/">Ada Initiative</a> and the <a href="http://anitaborg.org/">Anita Borg Institute.</a>

Braun began her career working on software for IBM mainframes, she says. In 2000, IBM made waves by spending $1 billion on Linux and using it to run its mainframes. Braun was on the team that made that happen.
A few months ago, IBM doubled down its support of Linux, vowing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-to-spend-another-1-billion-on-linux-2013-9">to spend another $1 billion on it.</a>
She and her team, in IBM Germany, are helping with that, too.
Her advice for newbies is: "Don't hesitate to join the Linux community. It is a technical community and it does not count whether you are a woman or a man."

Vasilescu worked with the Linux Foundation last summer as an intern after finishing her degree in computer science in Bucharest, Romania.
She became fascinated by Linux, applied for the internship and wound up working on the part of the software that lets it use Ethernet network connections. She's gone back to school for her doctorate, working on artificial intelligence.
Plus she's volunteering as a teaching assistent, teaching programming. "My objective is to create something that will improve the world ... And I'm sure Linux will be involved!"
Her advice for other newbies is, "You don't have anything to lose. Start working today on the things you actually like."

Chaiken describes herself as a "career-changer who took my first programming class in 2007 at night." She was in her mid 40s. She was previously working as a physicist.
"The progress of my career is a source of amazement to me," she says. "My use of computers predates Windows." (She started with Linux's predecessor BSD Unix.)
But, as her physics career slowed, Android and open-source hardware from companies like <a href="http://buglabs.net/">Bug Labs </a>arrived. "I was immediately smitten, and realized that my hobby of playing with computers was a more viable career than my original one."
She learned to program and even helped Nokia work on its Linux-based Android competitor, MeeGo. That was killed when Nokia standardized on Windows Phone, but it was a high-profile project in the open-source world.
She landed at Mentor Graphics and is now working on putting Linux into cars.
Her advice is to stay flexible, change paths if you need to and "never, ever work on something you don't love unless doing so is a stepping stone to another goal.
Above all, "keep your sense of humor ... very often well-meaning folks can be offensive unintentionally, and many will apologize and modify their behavior if asked politely."
Her best tip for newbies is to join a Web chat community where like-minded developers hang out. She joined FreeNode and says it's been "magic for me."
