Nearly 90% of the registered applicants appeared for the exams. The National Testing Agency had strict standard operating procedures in place because of the pandemic, including measures like reducing the number of candidates per room from the earlier 24 to 12. The NTA had also increased the number of centres from 2,546 in 2019 to 3,862 this year to ensure crowd management and staggered entry and exit protocols. Unlike the engineering entrance (JEE), NEET-UG, the medical admission test, is a pen and paper exam held once a year. Candidates, who belong to the General or unreserved category, need at least 50 percentile to be eligible for counselling. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Criminal gangs are helping students cheat on exams in India, according to The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam.</li></ul>India's massive examination machine is floundering.This year, the country's primary testing body — the National Testing Agency (NTA) — has faced a series of controversies.They range from exam delays and cancellations to more serious allegations of errors in questions and leaked papers.While NTA officials have denied that any exam papers were leaked the federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22wl82yldo">BBC</a> in June that "some irregularities" had been found.Now, it seems some are taking advantage of the examination chaos.According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/india/gangs-are-making-millions-helping-indians-cheat-on-exams-32500cce">Wall Street Journal, some middle-class families are paying criminal gangs thousands </a>to help their children get the upper hand on these exams.<h2 id="5266815a-7004-480f-a5ba-395977759d6c">Cheating in India's medical entrance exam</h2>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).This year, around 2.4 million students in India took the exam, competing for medical college seats totaling about 0.02% of that number."Very few people crack it on the first try," one student, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told Business Insider.She spent a year preparing for the undergraduate and postgraduate exams, respectively. During this time, she woke up at 4 a.m. and studied for at least 10-12 hours each day.Some prefer to take an easier route.The Journal found that several students had paid $15,000-20,000 to illegally look at the question paper before the exam. BI could not independently verify the figures.The police made multiple arrests related to exam cheating after results showed that 67 people received perfect scores in the NEET exams this year."Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. "It's a nexus of desperate students, parents, tuition centers and printing presses."<h2 id="378edaf6-be36-458e-8847-661e66638c81">Leaked questions</h2>One student told BI that several Telegram channels dedicated to exam prep saw messages encouraging students "struggling with exams and don't have time for studies" to get in touch for "help.""My friend said he was asked to pay around 15,000 rupees ($180) to enter the private channel where they shared the questions," she said.BI reached out to the Telegram account offering "help". The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200).High ranks in these exams mean coveted "seats" in medical colleges operated by the state and national governments. Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000.However, some students with the financial capacity prefer cheating and getting a government seat instead."It makes very good economic sense," a senior medical advisor with knowledge of the matter told BI. "The question paper will be given for about 25 lakh rupees (around $29,000). For that much, they get a free seat in a government college where they only have to pay around 16,000 rupees ($190) per annum.""For the entire five-year degree, that still only comes to around one lakh rupees ($1191), so of course rich students would rather do that instead of paying their way into private medical schools."<h2 id="4ff61c3d-756d-47c9-8f47-2f6be9f1f6a0">Earning a 'merit' seat</h2>The advisor — who preferred to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to BI — also said there is a significant amount of respect that comes with having "earned" a merit seat instead of paying their way into a private "management" seat."Unfortunately, there are very few objective metrics that people have as outsiders to judge the competence of their doctors, especially at a time when everybody in India sits with an MBBS board outside their clinic," agreed Asish George, a doctor who cleared the entrance exam in 2014."For those people, the fact that someone cracked a highly competitive entrance exam and got in would inspire more confidence than someone who paid their way through the whole thing."According to the Journal, authorities in India have tried to install video cameras inside exam halls and increased their monitoring of social media to catch cheaters. But many are still finding ways to illegally gain the upper hand, at a high price. The NTA did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.

It aims to employ more than 1000 people by the end of this year, the company said in a statement on Monday. The edtech startup announced the expansion of its workforce by four times to fuel the growth of the organisation. The e-learning platform — which provides specialised coaching classes for entrance exams like Joint Entrance Examination (<keyword id="6392660" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE">JEE</keyword>), All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), National Talent Search Examination (<keyword id="75234" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTSE">NTSE</keyword>), National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (<keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>) and Olympiads — will be hiring from Tier-2 and beyond locations across various fields like marketing, sales and technical roles. It is planning to recruit over 1000 people in sales profile, 100 engineers in technology teams located in USA’s Kirkland in Washington and Bengaluru, India. It will also be looking to add qualified teachers to deliver online programmes in regional languages. The homegrown startup said that it will also be creating around 100 job opportunities in its overseas markets including the USA, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Singapore. The founder and chief executive of BasicFirst, Randhir Kumar said, “The company has seen considerable month-on-month growth of 100% with a 52% CAGR [compound annual growth rate] in the last nine months, thanks to strong demand from Tier II and beyond locations. Edtech startup BasicFirst plans to hire over 1000 employees for sales, marketing and engineering roles

New Delhi, Aug 26 () Over four lakh admit cards for medical entrance exam NEET were downloaded within three hours on Wednesday, sources said. <keyword id="7726423" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National-Testing-Agency">The National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) released the admit cards for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) at 12 pm on Wednesday. "Admit cards of NEET were available for download at 12 today. Over 4 lakh candidates have downloaded in first 3 hours," sources said. While the NEET is planned on September 13, engineering entrance exam <keyword id="1373000" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-main">JEE Main</keyword> is scheduled from September 1-6. Around 9.53 lakh candidates have registered for <keyword id="1115324" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Mains">JEE-Mains</keyword> and 15.97 lakh students have registered for NEET. Amid rising clamour for postponement of the crucial exams in view of rising COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Education (<keyword id="343481" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moe">MoE</keyword>) officials had reiterated on Tuesday that the exams will be conducted as per schedule in September. Increasing the number of examination centres, alternate seating plan, fewer candidates per room and staggered entry and exit are among the steps the NTA will take for safely conducting NEET and JEE next month. "The number of examination centres have also been increased from 570 to 660 (for JEE Main) and 2,546 to 3,843 (for NEET). While JEE-Mains is a computer-based test, NEET is a pen-paper test," the NTA said in a statement on Tuesday. "Additionally, in case of JEE-Mains, the number of shifts have been increased from the earlier 8 to 12, and the number of candidates per shift has been reduced from earlier 1.32 lakh to 85,000 now," it said. "In order to ensure proper social distancing inside the examination halls, the candidates will be seated in alternate seats in case of JEE-Mains. In case of NEET, the number of candidates per room has been reduced from 24 to 12," it added. For ensuring social distancing outside the examination hall, the entry and exit of candidates has been staggered. "Adequate arrangements have also been made outside the examination centers to enable candidates stand with adequate social distancing, while waiting. Candidates have also been issued an advisory guiding them about the 'Dos and Don'ts' for proper social distancing," the NTA said. There have been demands from several quarters to further postpone the entrance exams in view of increasing coronavirus cases. On Tuesday, Swedish teen climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg also threw her weight behind postponing the exams in view of the pandemic. "It's deeply unfair that students of India are asked to sit national exams during the COVID-19 pandemic and while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods. I stand with their call to #PostponeJEE_NEETinCOVID," she said in a tweet. Several opposition leaders in India including Congress' Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik, <keyword id="6357766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dmk">DMK</keyword> president MK Stalin and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia have demanded the exams be postponed. The Supreme Court had last week dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases, saying precious year of students "cannot be wasted" and life has to go on. "We find that there is absolutely no justification in the prayer made for postponement of the examination in question relating to NEET as well as JEE-Mains," the Supreme Court had said. The NTA has also written to state governments to extend support in local movement of the candidates so that they are able to reach their examination centres on time.

Vatsalya's father, Chandra Kant Singh Chauhan said, "My 20-year-long dedication has yielded results and my dream has come true. My son is now going abroad and I want him to make India proud abroad." 
 
Chandra Kant has five other children. He has now sent one of his daughters to Kota to prepare for the medical entrance exam.

<ul><li>Tamil Nadu is going to poll for the first time in the second phase of the 2019 Parliamentary elections in India.</li></ul><ul><li>The Neduvasal hydrocarbon project and Chennai-Salem expressway project driven by the central government have faced severe public outrage. </li></ul><ul><li>The Narendra Modi government’s stance on imposing a central exam for medical college admissions has further tilted the scales in favour of its rivals.</li></ul><ul><li>While the country’s largest copper smelter operated by Sterlite has been shut by court order, the police firing that killed 14 protestors in 2018 is still fresh in the voters’ minds. </li></ul><ul><li>The blame for the shootout in Tuticorin fell on the ruling state government under AIADMK, which is now fighting the Parliamentary elections in alliance with the BJP. </li></ul>The voters of one of India’s <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/indicators/himachal-pradesh-tamil-nadu-and-kerala-top-ranking-in-sdg-index-niti-aayog/articleshow/67192585.cms">relatively developed states</a>, Tamil Nadu, are an angry lot. A series of missteps by the Narendra Modi government meant that their indignation has been directed towards the incumbent alliance between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On the other side is the coalition between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian National Congress, the Left Front, and a set of other local parties that significance within certain segments-- either geographically or among specific sections of the electorate. While there are other regional outfits and smaller coalitions in the fray, including the iconic movie star Kamal Hasan who is making his electoral debut, almost <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/elections/lok-sabha-elections-2019/tamil-nadu/news/tamil-nadu-poll-survey-says-dmk-front-to-get-30-33-lok-sabha-seats/articleshow/68784727.cms">all opinion polls</a> in the run up to the elections have handed a landslide to the challengers led by the DMK and Congress. There are at least four big decisions that work against the incumbent <keyword id="5013725" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK-BJP-Alliance">AIADMK-BJP alliance</keyword>. A small oil field In 2015, the <a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/energy/no-noble-gases-57750">Modi government approved a project to dig</a> for oil and natural gas from a 10 square kilometre field in Neduvasal, in Pudukottai district. The reason being the oil field was located in one of the more fertile parts of Tamil Nadu’s delta region around the Cauvery river. The proposal to dig for oil in the region scratched the wounds of an existing wound in the minds of the local farmers. A standoff with the neighbouring state of Karnataka over <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/a-brief-history-of-the-cauvery-dispute/tale-of-two-states/slideshow/63698683.cms">the sharing of Cauvery’s water</a> is decades old. Even after a settlement ordered by the Supreme Court, the farmers’ in Tamil Nadu’s rice bowl feel parched as well as wronged by the system. Farmers were caught by surprise when they were asked to give up their land to extract oil, while they were still hoping to their share of water to till the land. A big highway Farmers have been up in arms in five other districts too, far away from Neduvasal. The point of contention is an eight-lane expressway stretching nearly 280 kilometres west from the state capital Chennai to the industrial town of Salem. Once again the BJP has found itself in the firing line of the voters as it continues to push for the project despite stiff resistance that the party’s rivals have capitalised on. The Madras High Court on April 8 quashed the land acquisition process for the Chennai-Salem Expressway project. The challenging coalition led by Congress and the DMK have vowed to scrap the project if voted to power. A medical entrance test Seventeen-year-old Anitha, an aspiring medical student, committed suicide in September 2017 after she failed to clear the then newly-introduced medical entrance exam, that goes by the acronym NEET. The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) replaced the admission tests for medical colleges across the country with a centralised process. The <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/why-neet-election-issue-tamil-nadu-98604">people’s resentment against NEET</a> stems from the view that it puts local students, even the high-scorers, at a disadvantage because the curriculum is structured based on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is different from the state syllabus. The state administration’s high-handed approach in the wake of protests, and <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/story/piyush-goyal-neet-tamil-nadu-bjp-aiadmk-1500468-2019-04-12">the BJP’s persistence</a> on imposing NEET, has only hurt the alliance’s chances in the state. Once again, BJP’s rivals have promised to let states decide the mode of admission into medical colleges. The <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/QgYD6W50rev6VcHmGs9GKP/NEET-protests-More-states-join-the-fight.html">protests against NEET was not unique</a> to Tamil Nadu, but the outrage in the southern state was the most severe. Tamil Nadu is known for its huge population of aspiring doctors. The state has 22 medical colleges, among the highest in the country, and 4 doctors for every 1,000 people, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/6-states-have-more-doctors-than-whos-11000-guideline/articleshow/65640694.cms">nearly at par with</a> developed countries like Norway and Sweden. Despite the enduring resentment, Tamil Nadu had the <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/education/2019/feb/03/tamil-nadu-has-the-highest-number-of-doctors-who-cleared-pg-neet-1933745.html">maximum number of students</a> clearing the NEET exam in 2019. The shootout In May 2018, The Tamil Nadu Police <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/sterlite-violence-video-shows-policemen-taking-aim-and-shooting-protesters-81744">opened fire at a sea of protestors</a> outside the country’s largest copper smelter, operated by Sterlite, a Vedanta Group company. More than 10 people died in the shootout and the public anger that swelled further poured on the ruling state government led by the AIADMK. Sterlite’s plant was accused of violating pollution norms, causing fatal health issues to its workers and the population in its vicinity. Local protests against the plant have been underway in patches since 1996, and they escalated once again in 2018 leading up to the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/editorials/tuticorin-massacre/594415.html">‘Tuticorin Massacre’</a>. Subsequent probe and judicial inquiry revealed gaping regulatory lapses, eventually leading to the closure of the plant pending investigations and corrections. The London-based Vedanta Group has been a big donor to <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/india/sterlite-congress-bjp-fcra-violation-finance-bill-amendments">both the BJP and the Congress</a> between 2004 and 2015. However, BJP also found itself further on the wrong side of the debate soon after the issue came to the fore, as some of its leaders tried to colour some of the protestors as anti-social elements.

 Going into the 2019 elections, the party is in alliance with the regional party, AIADMK, which bore the brunt of the public anger. A year on, the memory of the lethal attack on protestors is still fresh among voters, particularly in the region. As is the outrage against NEET, the Chennai-Salem expressway, and the proposed oil field in Neduvasal. The odds are heavily stacked against the AIADMK-BJP alliance. This is the first-time in decades that Tamil Nadu is going to polls without a strong, regional leader to back. Over decades, a series of larger-than-life leaders, with their share of taints, from <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/cn-annadurai-legacy-of-a-dravidian-stalwart-6007351.html">CN Annadurai</a> to <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/magazine/cover-story/story/19880115-m.g.-ramachandran-death-marks-the-passing-of-an-era-of-stability-in-tamil-nadu-796866-1988-01-15">MG Ramachandran</a> to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/karunanidhi-1924-2018/newslist/65311339.cms">M Karunanidhi</a> and <a href="https://frontline.thehindu.com/cover-story/jayalalithaas-legacy/article9435860.ece">J Jayalalitha</a> had turned Tamil Nadu into a politically unbreachable fortress for national parties. The mandate kept passing between the DMK and AIADMK for years. However, the passing away of Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha in recent years has left a political vacuum that the national parties intended to capitalise on. Neither the BJP nor the Congress by itself has made any significant headway so far.
