He goes by the name ‘Chatpat’ and is popular for sharing street wisdom on LinkedIn. He was quick to rise to fame, as he says, “Anna ke tapri seh Insta ki nagri, Public ka support har jagah!” Another reason why people love him is because Chatpat is a just 10-year-old boy who shares tips on living rent-free in Mumbai, how to get foreign aid, how to ask for a raise, how to ensure mental wellness for your team and we all could use a Chatpat in our life! With these enlightening videos on LinkedIn, which are targeted at working professionals and corporates, little Chatpat is trying to raise funds for the NGO SOS Children’s Villages. “The media strategy was to not spend money,” Kinnect's National Creative Director, Kartikeya Tiwari told Advertising and Media Insider when we asked him why the agencies, Kinnect and <keyword id="2971959" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fcb-india" source="Orion">FCB India</keyword>, chose LinkedIn to launch Chatpat. “Our strategy in everything was to not spend money but make money happen for SOS donations,” added Tiwari. The campaign, while born in adversity, became a huge opportunity for SOS Children’s Villages. The agencies kept their ‘whims and fancies’ aside, said Tiwari, and prioritised starting a conversation and raising donations on almost zero budget. They needed a strong idea that could be impactful and have a long cycle. So, after launching Chatpat, in phase two of the campaign, Chatpat started recreating some iconic advertisements with his gully gang to get attention from corporates. He played Jim Sarbh for CRED, he danced like the Liril Girl at a Dhobi Ghat, twirled like Nirma Girl and shocked the public again with Tide’s ‘Safedi campaign.’ In return, he asked these brands to donate to SOS Children’s Villages. “Maine tumhare brand ke liye yeh banaya, ab aap mere brand ke liye kuch karo,” requested Chatpat in every recreated advertisement. Exceeding their expectations, Chatpat’s advertisements got viral in a few days and has been winning hearts on LinkedIn since December 2021. Swati Bhattacharya, Creative Chairperson, FCB India said that she firmly believed that love will find a way. “So the task was to create a campaign that gives visibility and makes corporates donate. With no budget and a task like this, we knew we need an influencer and we couldn’t afford an influencer. So, that’s how the sparkly idea of ‘let’s create an influencer’ was born,” shared Bhattacharya. While Bhattacharya has worked on many viral campaigns, she said that she has never seen numbers move the way they did with Chatpat’s videos. Played by a Mumbai-based boy Akul Badoni, Chatpat’s videos amassed more than 20k followers in less than two weeks. “The magic word for us is ‘organic.’ The magic was organic reach, organic shareability and organic love. The fact that we got the earned media is the winning validation for us,” said Tiwari. The campaign got organic attention from Kusha Kapila, Tanmay Bhat, Rhea Chakraborty, Divine, Raftaar, to mention a few. “With this, we knew we were in the right direction. Corporates are also human beings and after the first phase, he started earning a place in India’s hearts, then we were fairly confident that we will be able to open the heartstrings and the purse strings of the corporates,” said Bhattacharya. She is a ‘brilliant’ marketing executive who always gets approval in one go, can come up with out-of-the-box ideas every time you ask her, barely knows how to use hashtags right but has managed to find the formula behind going viral after every post, gets to combine PR, advertising, marketing, event management into one role and has a very active social life beyond work. She is living the dream, one that every advertising marketing professional yearns for! Watching this show itself is like taking a vacation, it serves as an escape that people in an overworked job role often crave. However, this original Netflix series has polarized viewers since its debut on the platform. Its recently released season two has gathered flak for its stereotypical representation of Parisian culture and unrealistic portrayal of how easy, glamourous a marketing job can be. At the same time, it did get a few things right. The protagonist Emily, played by <keyword id="602245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lily-Collins" source="Orion">Lily Collins</keyword>, is unafraid to challenge the status quo and the show also depicts how sexism is still present in ads. The series portrays advertising and marketing as a job where you don’t have control over what your day is going to look like -- it highly depends on external factors and everyday events. Social media trends can influence your idea and overall work. While advertising is not just for extroverts, it is definitely easier for extroverts such as Emily to quickly find the right people for the job and execute her idea without missing the trend. You don’t become an influencer in a day Emily turns to Instagram to cure her boredom and randomly posts a selfie with the hashtag ‘room with a view’ -- a hashtag that no one follows but her Instagram just cannot stop buzzing. She rises to fame on Instagram after sharing a few stories, not even posts or reels. She starts with 50 followers and rises to thousands in a week. With this, Emily in Paris trivializes influencer marketing and content creation. You don’t become an influencer with a single croissant photo, only if it were that easy. 2. There’s no formula to go viral Unless you are a Kardashian, a picture of your dress won’t attract 177k likes in a few hours and especially not with a hashtag that no one looks up. Credit: Netflix 3. <ul><li>With the increasing number of <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> cases every day and job layoffs, it is becoming extremely difficult to stay calm and keep working for a lot of people.</li><li>A lot of agencies have upgraded their policies to help their employees navigate through this tough period and to push them to take care of their <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword>. </li><li>From sharing their chai time to appreciating their personnel’s cooking skills to playing online games, agencies have put their best foot forward to fight together, despite being miles apart. </li></ul>As of April 29, there are 29,435 positive COVID-19 cases in India. To top that, an air of despondency is looming around because of the fear of the unknown, blues of working in isolation, pressure to overperform in a dismal atmosphere, lack of job assurance and security, and salary cuts. And those who were already battling with mental illness such as OCD, anxiety, depression, or autism—have found their stress levels kicking through the roof and struggles intensified. In such a challenging scenario, it is quite normal to feel dejected and lost. Therefore, there is an urgent need for better HR policies, counselling sessions and human contact today more than ever before. It is critical to check on their mental well-being rather than seeking updates on their daily tasks. Agencies are coming up with creative solutions to help their employees to cope and stay upbeat. From digital Antakshari to making sure they see each other virtually every day during their chai time to one-on-one sessions with medical professionals, experts have left no stone unturned to ease out their employees’ struggles. They claim that they feel closer to their employees today than ever before. One thing the lockdown, globally, has created is opportunities for all of us to enjoy artists across the world and nationally online. There is so much happening every week, other than streaming your favourite shows, that our employees can check out. This gives them the opportunity to discover new things from cooking, engaging seminars or even the opera.</li><li>We have ensured there are processes in place by which our leaders are constantly communicating with their teams through virtual meetings and town halls and addressing their issues and concerns. Open channels of communication are critical at times like these.</li><li>Most importantly, we have made sure that our teams have access to any sort of medical help from home through an app Doctor 24x7. This is an app-based service which provides our employees the opportunity to speak with doctors and health specialists across the country at any time. We understand the challenges faced with physically seeking help medically right now, so we wanted to open a channel for employees to feel like they can be looked after through this partnership. The app also has a section dedicated to mental health with qualified therapists readily available.</li></ul>I think mental illness in times like these is an outcome of fear and insecurity. And while it is important to be open, honest and transparent, we as an industry have to be cautious of the messaging that we put out, especially through the period of lockdown. Constant negative coverage spreads anxiety and apprehension. This is the time for us to be supportive, show empathy and inspire with positivity. Anand Chakravarthy, Managing Director, Essence India: <div type="image" title="Essence - Anand Chakravarthy" msid="75427857" hostid="261"></div> Most businesses require a close collaboration of different functions, and years of working together out of an office cannot be completely replaced overnight with remote working. One of the key challenges of entire teams working remotely from home is the dip in energy and engagement, which can be easily sensed by one another in an office but not in a remote working environment. This can lead to reduced productivity in uncertain times. To help mitigate such situations and ensure that we are able to positively impact the mental health of our teams, we introduced initiatives in three areas of focus: <ul><li>Driving engagement</li></ul>At Essence, we have always had our voluntary affinity group, Pirates, who are the culture champions within the agency. During this remote working period, they have been constantly innovating to create a new initiative each week to keep our teams in good spirits. These include online quiz sessions, an online music concert, sharing of pictures of our home workspaces and pets, and even online Zumba classes! There is also our global ‘Essence Olympics’ which takes place throughout April 2020. Employees can take part in the four categories of distance, daily workout, nutrition and mental power. They thus have something fun to do and look forward to on a weekly basis, keeping spirits and energy high while working from home. Additionally, we have a series of town halls conducted online, where both our India and global leadership address entire teams, give prompt updates and answer questions. This process of continuous communication in a very dynamic environment has been instrumental in keeping all employees informed and engaged. <ul><li>Ensuring mindfulness and empathy</li></ul>Extended weeks of working remotely does take its toll on everyone. It is certainly not easy to be working like before while being at home, especially with our varying personal and household responsibilities. We encourage everyone to maintain a daily schedule, just like working from the office, by starting and ending the day on time and avoiding late calls or working on the weekend. Globally, we have weekly ‘Mindfulness Moments’ live streams, which are designed to help employees take time out to pause, breathe and find a centred place. Our global ‘Connect’ newsletter serves as a guide to staying connected during times of social distancing. It is updated weekly to provide the latest information on policies, remote working tips and tools to bolster employees’ physical, emotional and mental health. To support employees and their line managers, we also put together a series of workshops called BRIDGE and TRAVERSE to provide practical tips on how to approach remote working and manage work, while still recognising challenges people face. The aim is to help employees thrive in the face of this new status quo, stay connected no matter the distance, and continue to deliver on our mission to our clients, all while taking care of their own well-being.Access to counselling is available to all employees as well, should they want to speak to a professional counsellor about how they are feeling. <ul><li>Enhancing productivity </li></ul>Technology has played a key role in enabling remote working, and fortunately at Essence, we have always been using Google Hangouts for internal meetings across our India offices and with teams in other countries. Using technology effectively has contributed really well to staying connected and productive. The second space is in the area of upskilling and training. We have devised and launched a series of training programmes across different disciplines that employees can opt in for. -Organisations should have existing systems and processes in place to ensure the holistic wellness of their employees. Essence has an established employee well-being ecosystem that supports staff through both professional and personal challenges. Encouraging more open dialogue around mental well-being is an important first step, as it impacts the productivity, physical and social well-being, as well as the quality of life of employees. There is more that can be said and done about workplace mental health, and organisations need to take it upon themselves to make it a strategic imperative. We’re inherently celebratory, both for work and life achievements. Our hope for Webchutney has always been that we try to bring our whole selves authentically to work and that includes us not shying away from the hard stuff, such as anxiety, grief, burnout and stress, especially during situations like the one we find ourselves in now. To help us with this, we’ve been partnering with an institution called HNI, a not-for-profit that provides services in mental health, workplace stress management and other individual and organizational needs. They’ve been our partners for nearly a year now, first with a pilot in Bangalore and now for all our offices recently. These are completely confidential one-on-one interactions as would be with any therapist or counsellor, with the advantage that over time we’ve also helped HNI’s team understand the nature of our work and workplace better. Their long-term role will be to help us build an open &amp; progressive work environment where individuals can thrive and perform, and where one needn’t come at the cost of the other. More than anything we need to remind each other that it is okay to not always be okay (my favourite piece of wall art from the Bangalore office is below). Webchutney has been lucky to experience tremendous highs over the past year, and as we try and continue in the same vein despite current limitations, work can often ask a lot of an individual. And dealing with these work pressures, managing personal commitments &amp; relationships especially in this current climate now is guaranteed to be tricky and stressful. We need to encourage everyone to talk openly and show compassion. It may be as small as recognizing when others are going through a tough moment and allowing them the time and space for themselves. It may be listening and about having each other’s backs. As part of our #GetALife program that encourages work-life balance, we facilitate one-on-one sessions with a mental health professional on a bi-weekly basis. An external professional conducts these sessions, and we ensure confidentiality. Keeping in mind the current situation, in March and April, the sessions were facilitated through calls/video calls. All leadership is mandated to do team catch-up calls every day, preferably starting the day with a video call. Thus enabling them to stay connected and build better team relationships. We have a designated team that reaches out to all Kinnectors, and discusses at length about their health and work from home scenarios. I make sure to interact with the leadership every week and keep myself updated about each of their team member’s health. We also do virtual engagement activities and training. We encourage our employees to take up activities or learn a new skill, to grow personally as well as professionally in a time where they might feel stagnant. #KinnectFridays are a mainstay as part of the #KinnectCulture. Communicate clearly, and be always available to listen. Understand their current work settings, and acknowledge that working around family, and a combination of working and supervising children can get tedious. Hence, maintain some semblance of a structure while allowing that this is an unprecedented situation. How agencies are helping their employees take care of their mental health amidst a global pandemic

<ul><li>With Father’s Day around the corner, we decided to look at how the <keyword id="9427183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-agency-network">Indian agency network</keyword> is slowly moving towards building an equal space for both men and women at work by offering <keyword id="1759407" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="paternity-leaves">paternity leaves</keyword>. </li><li>We observe when these policies were added into their system to understand how long it took them to realise that new fathers also deserve paid leaves to be able to share the load equally at home. </li><li>The agencies we reached out offer paternity leave for 1-2 weeks. </li></ul>For the longest time, paternity leave wasn’t a concept in India. It was mothers who took care of the household chores and new-born kid(s). Fathers, on the other hand, either did not have an option to take leaves or they did not feel comfortable availing paternity leave in the fear of losing their job role to someone else in that short period of time. In India, paternity leaves are usually offered for one or two weeks, as opposed to 26 weeks or 182 days for new mothers. This wide gap, according to <a href="https://feminisminindia.com/2020/01/23/paternity-leaves-sexist-gap-parental-policies/">Feminism in India</a>, exists because new mothers need more time to physically heal and secondly, because of the bias that fathers do not need to stay home as much as mothers since they take on the child-rearing responsibilities for a longer time. India is still 90 out of the 187 countries in the world with no national policies to ensure that fathers get enough paid time off with their infants and wives, when they need them the most. Zomato and Novartis are the only two companies in our country that offer a 26-week-long paternity leave. With Father’s Day around the corner, we decided to collate a list of <keyword id="2398193" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-agencies">Indian agencies</keyword> who do offer paternity leave, for how long and look back at the year they added it to reflect on India’s progress in shaping gender equality. A male employee who legally adopts a child below the age of three months is also entitled to paternity leave of two weeks. Expectant parents have no cap on work-from-home. They can operate from home for as many days as they want. It offers the new parent (biological/adoptive) a paid leave of 10 working days which can be extended and combined with regular leaves. It also has flexible working hours and a work from home option to help the new parent ease themselves into their new way of life. This policy has been around for around 5 years at Wunderman Thompson. It has also launched a group initiative called 'Safe Room' where working fathers will be given space to candidly share and discuss the unique challenges that come with being a working dad. YouTube announces Winners of first India edition of YouTube Works Awards

<ul><li>In the last feature of our <keyword id="168821" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pride-Month">Pride Month</keyword> series, we look back at the past of advertising, speak to the LGBTQIA+ community from the industry on which ads they resonated with, its evolution thus far and how can the industry further drive change in society at large. </li><li>They said a lot needs to be done and change can only come when the insiders of the ad industry step into the shoes of these people, empathise and help normalise. </li></ul>While every day should be Pride Day, June brings along an opportunity for us to sit and reflect on how far we have come, try to recognise and unlearn the biases, acknowledge the struggles that LGBTQIA+ people went through and to start normalising the conversation. After the Supreme Court scrapped Section 377 in India in 2018, a lot of brands came forward to celebrate the landmark judgement. However, the momentum went down in 2019 and this year, when brands have more time than ever to really reflect on their values and speak about issues that matter, this June, the discussion around equality went further below. Apart from the <keyword id="9479124" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rainbow-washing">rainbow washing</keyword> on social media and a few campaigns by OkCupid, Tinder and Instagram, this pride month was rather disappointing. While globally, the LGBTQIA+ representation-momentum is only growing, India is still way behind. This silence is speaking a thousand words, indicating that traditional Indian brands are still closeted. So we decided to reach out to the LGBTQIA+ community from the ad industry and look back at the campaigns that started a conversation that everyone else was afraid to have, trace the industry’s progress, discuss how they wish to be represented in the future and how advertising can drive change. Ads that sparked change OTT platforms have allowed directors and writers to create content with no filters and break out of the conventions of love stories and gender roles. There is more representation now than ever before. However, it is only during the pride month that there is a sudden bombardment of rainbows and brands remember that LGBTQIA+ are also their consumers with purchasing power. Shekhar Mhaskar, Chief Growth Officer, Isobar India says Indian advertising industry still has a long way to go. When asked what are some of the Indian ads that he liked or resonated with, Mhaskar said, ‘None. At least not from India in 2020.’ He explained, “Indian advertising is yet to come a long way. Got to be bolder than ever. While advertisers in India want to be in the race to show that they accept the LGBTQIA+ community in a lot of ways, the advertisements or the creative are still 'indicative' by using mnemonics of such relationships, viz. using rainbow colours; using the gender symbols, so on and so forth. It needs to be bolder, in your face (without bordering any sexual innuendos, though). To give an example, look for the ad ‘Imagine a World’ by SodaStream, or a few others that are part of the 2020 Super Bowl series where real-life gay talent has been cast - Jonathan Van Ness, the nonbinary star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, speaks about the virtues of Pop-Tarts and Drag Race stars Kim Chi and Miz Cracker filmed a commercial for hummus. As also the Amazon Alexa ad where Ellen and her partner Portia are at centre stage.” Amit Kekre, National Strategy Head, DDB Mudra Group shared a few ads that he liked from the many that have been launched over the years. “Vicks' Touch of Care campaign busted the stereotype of gender. It changed the definition of motherhood by saying that motherhood is an emotion independent of gender. In my mind, it was one of the sincere efforts and insight into the transgender community and questioned the very restrictive, hetereonormative framework of gender that we as a society are used to looking at. It was profound story-telling on the part of LGBTQIA+ community. DDB Mudra also worked on a campaign for Levi’s that tried to convey that they are more than just their sexuality, which I loved. Often enough the conversation around queer community centers around sex or sexuality but we are more than that so Levi’s tried to convey that our lives are more than just our sexuality,” said Kekre. How can ad industry become the torch-bearer of change? As an industry, advertising is known to lead to change. It can use its influential power in mending belief systems and uprooting regressive thoughts. It can bring about normalisation and make people embrace the entire spectrum. However, are we really using it tactfully? Kekre says change takes time. He said, “Change is a gradual process, especially in a society like ours where deep-rooted stigmas are the background that we operate in, change is even slower to come by. And not just advertising, brands and businesses at large lead change. Change comes in two parts: culture outside and internally, brands need to embrace change within their own ecosystem. So while advertising is consumer-facing does the part of story-telling and changing attitude at a large cultural level, within the organisation -- I feel there is a lot that needs to be done. From a passive acceptance, we need to move to active invitation that makes an announcement to the community that we are open for you to come in. It means not just policy and structural changes, it means tying up with organisations that help you identify talent from this community.” DDB Mudra has introduced an internship program specifically designed for the transgender community that helps them ease into the organsation because they are the most marganlised community and need more attention in terms of sheer livelihood. Jay, Creative Producer, Kinnect also suggested looking on the inside, recognising biases and talking about the stories out of the box that we have been stuck in. She said, “Advertising is a powerful industry that can drive change by reaching out to the masses at once. We have the potential but we have some way to go. As people who are in positions of making decisions about what consumers see, I do think we need to relook at our personal biases and understand that our society is very tightly pound by these gender roles, expectations of what a man and a woman are supposed to be, what relationships should look like -- once we open up our minds to a perspective free of these rules, we will be able to see that there are so many beautiful stories that deserve to be told. I wish these queer identities are represented outside of the pride month also. Everyone is a consumer and they should be spoken to all the time. Once brands approach inclusiveness as a given, rather than a singular campaign brief, I think that will be real change.” Mhaskar suggested stepping into the shoes of the queer community and understanding their woes and challenges. There is a need for empathy, not sympathy. He said, “There’s a lot to be done, a massive lot. India as a country is conservative and hypocritical. Agencies and corporations should openly and honestly promote inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ folks in the workforce and give them the same rights and privileges as everyone else. The policies are not meant to be in the books for keepsake. Those need to be brought out and applied without someone having to ask for it. Hope you get the drift.” Brands have a responsibility to the community and they should aim to not only promote themselves, but address larger social issues throughout the year.

Pride Month: How ad industry can drive change in the society

<ul><li>If an industry can flourish during a global pandemic and one of the worst economic crises we had to face, it can survive through any challenges that come in its way.</li><li>Digital media has proven time and again how integral it is to the advertising industry’s survival and growth.</li><li>However, every year brings with it a set of challenges different from the previous one. So, in our second year-ender, we look at digital marketing, its growth trajectory and look at what lies ahead.</li><li>Experts are optimistic that 2022 will be a game-changer that will help them redefine a lot of rules in advertising, with smarter marketing techniques.</li></ul>The digital marketing industry in India not only managed to weather the pandemic’s impact but also flourished gracefully in 2020. It accelerated at an unbelievable speed, exceeding all predictions and expectations. Brands were quick to adapt, pivoting aggressively from traditional mediums to invest in digital. Digital media became one of the most effective mediums to reach out to people locked inside their houses and stuck to their phone and tablet screens. This trend of increased smartphone consumption is only expected to amplify as more people, especially in Tier II and III cities, engage more digitally and make purchase decisions through websites, apps, social media platforms. Apps have undoubtedly become the most popular destination for consumers and marketers are capitalizing on this trend to engage with them.
