<p>During the Jewish holiday of Passover, observers give up all leavened foods for eight days and eat matzah like their ancestors. No bread, no pretzels, no cookies. <a href="http://www.tiferethisrael.org/HolidayInfo/Pesach_Dietary_Rules.htm">Many grains</a> aren't even allowed. It's harder than it looks.</p>

Strausman spoke with Insider to share his High Holiday cooking tips and common pitfalls to avoid.</p><h2>'Poor planning gives you poor results'</h2><p>As an award-winning chef, Strausman knows the importance of staying organized and planning ahead. When it comes to crafting your Rosh Hashanah menu, it's important to know not only what you're going to cook, but when.</p><p>"Poor planning gives you poor results," Strausman said. "It's really about planning the meal, knowing when you're going to cook it, knowing how you're going to reheat it, things like that. That is just as important as flavor and adding salt to the food. Strausman says the best way to free yourself up while cooking for a crowd is to make dishes ahead of time and include some items that you can serve at room temperature.</p><p>"Don't cook everything to order," he said. "We make things that we can reheat so we're not slaving away at the stove and dripping while people are sitting in the dining room. To achieve this texture, Strausman uses a secret ingredient: club soda.</p><p>"It adds a little fluffiness and a little air, plus there's salt in the club soda," he said.</p><h2>Cook brisket properly — 'slow and low'</h2><p>Brisket, a cut of meat often served on Jewish holidays, can become tough unless it's cooked slowly enough to break down the connective tissue. </p><p>"I think one of the biggest mistakes is cooking the brisket at too high a temperature, and then also not long enough," Strausman said. "The fork has got to go through the brisket like a hot knife through butter."</p><p>Strausman advises cooking brisket "slow and low" with the oven set at 325 degrees until the meat is fork tender. If the recipe says otherwise, he says it's best to ignore the instructions and keep testing the brisket yourself until it feels ready.</p><p>"Don't listen to the recipe," he said. "The person who wrote the recipe doesn't have the same oven you do." </p>

Passover foods are being sold for for 5 times the retail price as online sellers try to profit off of coronavirus shortages

Marjorie Taylor Greene visited Orthodox Jewish communities in Brooklyn and Long Island on Monday, t<a href="https://forward.com/fast-forward/465893/marjorie-taylor-greene-tours-orthodox-spots-in-brooklyn/">he Forward reported. </a></p><p>Orthodox community leader Nachman Mostofsky told the Forward that he hosted Greene and took her to several locations in the area, including a yeshiva, a matzah bakery, and a kosher supermarket. </p><p>"Knowing the congresswoman for a bit now, she has been nothing but a friend and ally for our community," Mostofsky told the outlet. This move was sparked by Greene's history of spreading QAnon-adjacent conspiracy theories on social media, more details of which were reported by outlets like CNN and the liberal media watchdog Media Matters after Greene took office.</p><p>In addition to spreading Islamophobia, Greene's social media activity before being elected to office included endorsing conspiracy theories <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/survivors-want-gop-greene-quit-over-school-shooting-denials-2021-1">that the Sandy Hook and Parkland school shootings were hoaxes and false flags</a>, suggesting that top Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-expressed-support-for-assassinating-democrats-cnn-2021-1">should be executed</a>, and supporting the "Frazzledrip" conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton and her aide Huma Abedin had sacrificed a child to drink its blood and wear its face as a mask.</p><p>In a lengthy 2018 Facebook post, Greene floated an anti-Semitic theory that the deadly 2018 wildfires in California <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-greene-pushed-conspiracy-that-space-laser-ignited-california-wildfire-2021-1">were caused by a Rothschild Inc.-linked laser from outer space</a> and not on the ground.</p><p>As <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/jewish-groups-blast-marjorie-taylor-greene-her-response-ill-never-back-down/">The Times of Israel explained</a>: "Invoking conspiratorial control by the Rothschild banking family over world events is a centuries-old anti-Semitic stereotype, and it is also a theme in the pro-Trump <keyword id="9152811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="qanon">QAnon</keyword> conspiracy theory."</p><p>Greene has also accused her political foes, including gun violence prevention advocate David Hogg, of being funded by billionaire George Soros, who she falsely characterized as a Nazi, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/17/house-republicans-condemn-gop-candidate-racist-videos-325579">Politico reported last summer.</a></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Before the pandemic, I was an active member of my synagogue.</li><li>In the absence of religious services, I've been making traditional Shabbat foods to help the day feel special.</li><li>My synagogue moved events to Zoom, but I've found moderation is key for virtual gatherings.</li><li>I've found socially distant walks and handwritten letters fulfilling.</li></ul><p>Before the pandemic, I was an active member of my synagogue community. I attended, and often led, Shabbat services on Friday nights and Saturdays, and helped coordinate Sunday prayer meetings. I went to crowded potluck meals in friends' apartments. I took the rabbi's Torah classes. </p><p>I haven't done any of that in over two months.</p><p>I'm not sure when I'll be able to go to synagogue again. No one is. Houses of worship are likely <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/houses-of-worship-trump-says-essential-coronavirus-hotspots-2020-5">super-spreader hotspots,</a> where one infected person can spread the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> to an unusually high number of others.</p><p>Like many people affected by the coronavirus, I'm realizing that things probably aren't going to go back to the way they were anytime soon, and I am doing my best to adjust to the new "normal."</p><h2>Many people have turned to cooking comforting meals during the pandemic — myself included</h2><p><div type="image" title="matzah ball soup" height="1571" width="2095" msid="76080521" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Even though Shabbat is traditionally the day of rest, I miss the feeling of having somewhere to be every week. Without the structure of services, it can be hard to distinguish another day of staying home from all of the others.</p><p>To help the day still feel special in the absence of my community, I've been putting extra effort into preparing traditional Jewish foods to eat on Shabbat. Plus, I have yet to find any ailment that a steaming bowl of matzah ball soup can't fix.</p><h2>Zoom events don't have the same feel as in-person gatherings, but they can be nice in moderation</h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/virtual-hangouts-why-ok-to-decline-protect-mental-health-2020-4">Zoom fatigue</a> is real. When the stay-at-home orders first started, I tried to replace every item in my calendar with its virtual equivalent. That got old fast, and I ended up avoiding all Zoom meetings for a while.</p><p>Now, I'm saying yes to some of my synagogue's online programming. Seeing the friendly faces and chanting the familiar melodies I used to anticipate every week usually gives me a boost, even if the medium itself can be exhausting.</p><h2>When Zoom fatigue hits, snail mail and socially distant walks help me stay connected to my community</h2><p><div type="image" title="park social distancing" height="562" width="749" msid="76080522" hostid="261"></div></p><p>As I <a href="https://www.insider.com/coronavirus-snail-mail-letters-better-than-zoom-2020-5">previously wrote about for Insider</a>, I've been using handwritten letters to stay in touch with loved ones. Digital communication can't recreate the feeling of holding a letter in your hands that someone took the time to write and send.</p><p>I would normally spend the upcoming Jewish holiday of Shavuot in synagogue and at festive meals with friends. This year, we're exchanging handwritten holiday greeting cards. Since <a href="https://www.insider.com/digital-detox-phone-addiction-sabbath-2019-8">I don't use my phone or computer on Shabbat or holidays</a>, physical notes can serve as a reminder on the day itself that we're all still celebrating together, even though we're socially distancing.</p><p>I've also been seeing people from my religious community on socially distant walks around the neighborhood. Even though we're wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart, waving and briefly commiserating together helps me feel less isolated.</p><p>One Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago, I was waiting at a crosswalk when several families from my synagogue appeared, including the rabbi and one of his children. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5707ea249105844d018bb863-1804-1353/donald trump office.jpg" alt="donald trump office" data-mce-source="Diane Bondareff/Invision/AP" data-mce-caption="Donald Trump in his Trump Tower office." /><p class="source"><span>Diane Bondareff/Invision/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Donald Trump in his Trump Tower office.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is looking to change the narrative following a rough couple of weeks culminating with a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-wins-wisconsin-2016-4">big loss in last Tuesday's Wisconsin primary</a>.</p><p>Fortunately for Trump, he's now entering a state where <a href="http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/ny/new_york_republican_presidential_primary-4222.html">he holds a roughly 30-point lead in the polls</a> over his competitors: his home state of New York.</p><p>But New York could be a bounty for John Kasich and Ted Cruz if they can run up the score in certain congressional districts, though they're facing a massive hole to climb out of with less than two weeks to go before the delegate-rich state votes.</p><p>That's because <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-new-york-donald-trump-delegates-2016-4">rules in the state allow for delegates</a> to be allocated proportionally if the winner finished below 50%. Fourteen of the state's 95 delegates are allocated in the statewide election, while the remaining 81 are awarded three-per the state's 27 congressional districts.</p><p>So if the winner doesn't hit 50% in a congressional district, the runner-up would pick up one of the three available delegates.</p><p>Should Trump romp through the state on April 19, he'd need roughly 53% of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before the July convention.</p><p>But should he lose a large swath of delegates by finishing below 50% throughout the state and in various congressional districts, Trump's rivals would be more likely to stop him from hitting the needed 1,237 delegates before the July convention.</p><p>"The most important storyline to watch for is how big the win is," New York GOP strategist and commentator Evan Siegfried told Business Insider.</p><p>"So New York, it's a big state but it isn't as crucial as it's made out to be," he continued. "It would be easier for the anti-Trump forces to stop him if he does not break that 50% and take all 95 delegates."</p><p>And that's precisely why Cruz, a Texas senator, and Kasich, the Ohio governor, have held recent campaign events in locations with relatively few registered Republicans.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5707d3409105841d008bb869-3216-2412/ap_702698701803.jpg" alt="Ted Cruz" data-mce-source="AP Photo/Mary Altaffer" data-mce-caption="Ted Cruz rolling matzah at a Brooklyn matzah bakery on Thursday." /><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Mary Altaffer</span></p><p class="caption">Ted Cruz rolling matzah at a Brooklyn matzah bakery on Thursday.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The two held campaign events over the past week in the Bronx and in Brooklyn, two heavily Democratic counties. On Wednesday, Cruz held a meet-and-greet at a Bronx restaurant that was mostly attended by the New York media, with protesters and supporters turning out in similar numbers. The following day, he rolled matzah - a Jewish bread most commonly served during the Passover holiday - with observant Jews in Brooklyn.</p><p>"Ted Cruz is going to pick his battles," Siegfried said. "That goes right down to every congressional district," he added.</p><p><span>Siegfried explained:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Ted Cruz wanted to come in and say that, "Hey, I'm here, and I'm ready to fight for the Republicans in the Bronx." There aren't that many Republicans in the Bronx. There aren't that many within New York City. But because it's a closed primary, that's all he needs to speak to. Democrats and independent voters doesn't matter at this point in time in the race for him.</p><p>Kasich, who enjoyed a warmer welcome in the Bronx than Cruz, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-kasich-italian-food-the-bronx-2016-4">made waves on Thursday</a> after his a meet-and-greet at a borough deli quickly turned into a social media chronicling of the massive feast the governor enjoyed. Later in the day, he held a Brooklyn town hall with Montel Williams.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5707d368910584155c8bb5e1-4435-2218/ap_135209915001.jpg" alt="John Kasich" data-mce-source="AP Photo/Bryan R. Smith</span></p><p class="caption">John Kasich eating a meal at a Bronx deli on Thursday.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The threat of Cruz and Kasich sharply cutting into Trump's delegate share - especially after the tough defeat in Wisconsin - has Trump doubling-down on his New York strategy. The business mogul even canceled a planned event in California this week in order to narrow his focus in on the Empire State.</p><p>Siegfried said the recent slip-ups for Trump that plagued him in Wisconsin and stunted his support there won't cut into his large share of voters in New York. But he said it's become increasingly tough for Trump to grow his base of support.</p><p>"He had a perfect opportunity on Tuesday night to be presidential as he said he could, but instead he went out and attacked Ted Cruz and called him a Trojan horse and accused him of breaking the law," Siegfried said, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-lost-ted-cruz-wisconsin-2016-4">referencing a statement</a> Trump released after Cruz crushed him in the Badger State.</p><p>"That wasn't presidential, that was just unhinged," he added.</p><p>But there is a precedent for a Trump-like candidate faring phenomenally well in a statewide primary. In 2010, Carl Paladino, the tough-talking Buffalo businessman whom Siegfried called "the original Trump," <a href="http://elections.nytimes.com/2010/results/primaries/new-york">won roughly 62% of the vote</a> in the Republican gubernatorial primary.
