Tomlin got the movie sold to Netflix and, 11 months later, filming began on "Project Power" (the name was changed as not to be confused with the 50 Cent series "Power") with big stars like Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached as the main characters who try to get the Power drug off the streets.<h2>Tomlin was so driven to get freestyle rap in the movie he rapped himself at a pitch meeting with agents</h2><div type="image" title="Project Power Netflix" height="1600" width="2133" msid="77616874" hostid="261"></div>Though an 11-month turnaround is lightning quick in Hollywood, that's not to say there weren't challenges for Tomlin along the way.The screenwriter recalls how hard he had to fight to get one of the most unique parts of the movie to stay in throughout the development process: a character who freestyle raps.In the movie, Robin (Dominique Fishback), a teen who deals the Power drug, has a talent as a rapper. She shows that by freestyling on several occasions during the movie.Tomlin said there were rap lyrics that he created placed throughout the script since its original draft — including a lengthy rhyme that appeared on the very first page. To show how serious he was about rapping being a component in the movie, Tomlin said he himself even rapped during a pitch meeting to a room full of agents."My manager said he thought the script was worth having some people hear the pitch, so I went to this agency and at the head of the conference room table in front of all these agents I just started rapping for like a minute and a half," Tomlin said. "It stunned people. Not stunned by how great it was, mind you, but stunned that this psychopath got into the building. But it all worked out so it doesn't seem quite as crazy."And when it came to the superhero powers, Tomlin said that the goal was always to showcase something that would be new to the audience.<h2>Tomlin wanted to come up with superpowers that audiences hadn't seen before, so he turned to the animal kingdom</h2><div type="image" title="Project Power Netflix2" height="1265" width="1687" msid="77616880" hostid="261"></div>"I knew that I didn't want to do anything telekinetic, or psychokinesis, anything that would involve actors standing on a set putting their hand out with their palm spread and concentrating really hard," Tomlin said. "I wanted to stay with powers that were more visceral."Tomlin said things really got interesting when Joost and Schulman came up with the idea to link the powers to those that animals possess."As we were trying to figure out what that looked like we found out how coral fish are really able to camouflage themselves, it looked like something out of 'Avatar,'" Tomlin said. "Once we had that, that seemed like something we should hang our hats on."It led to the powers in the movie deriving from the abilities of animals, yet another original take the movie would bring to the superhero genre.This all has resulted in "Project Power" not just being another impressive action movie for Netflix, coming on the heels of "The Old Guard," but proving that Tomlin is the next big screenwriter you should know about.<h2>Next up for Tomlin: 'The Batman' starring Robert Pattinson</h2><div type="image" title="the batman" height="1197" width="1596" msid="77616884" hostid="261"></div>Not fully sold yet? Well, Tomlin also is the co-screenwriter on "The Batman," the latest version of the comic book legend to come to the screen. The power struggle of good versus evil as people fight over the drug seems like it could be told in countless <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>, regardless if Netflix can get Foxx, Gordon-Levitt, or Fishback to return.The movie's screenwriter, Mattson Tomlin, who came up with the movie's idea and sold it to Netflix, also agrees. But he said with "Project Power" he and directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman were thinking less about a franchise and really focused more on getting the movie right — especially the ending."There was never a point where we thought we are going to box ourselves in to be obligated to do something in the future," Tomlin told Insider, admitting it just felt right that "The Major" would be able to ride off into the sunset at the end. "I definitely wrote a lot of different endings. The objective was to tell the story and end it on the right note."But with the movie now out, Tomlin can't help but think about how the story could move forward. He added that he has "a long long list of powers that didn't make the cut" in the movie."There's a number of things in my back pocket that I'm really excited to explore and play with," he said of the superpower angle.One example is the origin of the superpowers. "So to me this movie is so much about having a real political resonance and being about what's going on in this country and about the power structures that are failing people. He's not just the person who thought up the script for the superhero movie "Project Power" that's currently on Netflix, but he is also one of the minds that brought together the latest incarnation of the Batman franchise.There's very little known (or can be divulged yet) about "The Batman," starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, but Tomlin, who is a co-screenwriter on the movie, did give a small glimpse into the process of writing the script with the film's director, Matt Reeves."We were in the same room at a desk together for many months and just going through the process — I'd never written with anyone before — and co-writing it with him, I really do think he's one of our great filmmakers," Tomlin told Insider of Reeves, who is known best for directing "Cloverfield," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," and "War for the Planet of the Apes.""Having that experience, that was the mind-blower," Tomlin continued. Martin's</a> various book series that take place in Westeros and beyond.With the success of the first season of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/house-of-the-dragon-questions-left-unanswered-season-one-finale">House of the Dragon</a>," it appears that the network is keen to continue to mine the world George R.R. Martin created with more spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. The network also provided fans with the first teaser image of Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall. The show — which the author told <a href="https://ew.com/article/2016/04/18/game-thrones-george-rr-martin-spinoff/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Entertainment Weekly</a> in 2016 would be the "most natural follow-up" to the much-loved fantasy series — was given a straight-to-series order. The series is written and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker, with "House of the Dragon" showrunner Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. HBO announced in June that director Sarah Adina Smith would helm three of the show's six episodes. The show stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall ("Dunk") and Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon V ("Egg"), his markedly less-tall squire. The series is set approximately a century prior to the main events of "Game of Thrones": the Targaryen family still holds the Iron Throne, but the memories of dragons still remain. "When the day comes that I've finished telling all my tales of Dunk &amp; Egg, then we'll do a TV show about them, but that day is still a long ways off."Martin was, of course, referencing the way HBO's "Game of Thrones" wound up overtaking his published books in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, resulting in a divisive final season that<a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-thrones-a-song-of-ice-and-fire-show-book-endings-analysis-2020-5"> may significantly deviate</a> from Martin's planned (and still unwritten) book ending. <h2>The Jon Snow spinoff, "Snow"</h2><div type="image" title="Jon Snow on the beach Game of Thrones Season 7 Spoils of War" height="1405" width="1874" msid="106817737" hostid="261"></div>"Snow," which would have explored what happened to fan favorite Jon Snow (Kit Harington) after the events of "Game of Thrones," was set to be the only spinoff in development that is not based on pre-existing material by Martin.However, Harington told <a href="https://screenrant.com/game-thrones-jon-snow-spinoff-cancelled-why-kit-harington-response/">Screen Rant</a> in April 2024 that the series was no longer in development."Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," Harington said. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. He also found himself exiled beyond the Wall to live out his days with the Free Folk after committing regicide by killing the crazed Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).According to <a href="https://ew.com/tv/kit-harington-jon-snow-after-game-of-thrones/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Entertainment Weekly</a>, speaking during a panel at a "Game of Thrones" convention in 2020, Harington himself said of Jon's future: "The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse."He continued: "He's gotta go back up to the place with all this history and live out his life thinking about how he killed Dany, and live out his life thinking about Ygritte dying in his arms, and live out his life thinking about how he hung Olly, and live out his life thinking about all of this trauma, and that, that's interesting." "So I think where we leave him at the end of the show, there's always this feeling of like… I think we wanted some kind of little smile that things are okay. He's not okay."<h2>"Nine Voyages" </h2><div type="image" title="Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon in &quot;House of the Dragon.&quot;" height="1000" width="1333" msid="106817738" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://deadline.com/2021/03/game-of-thrones-prequels-sea-snake-9-voyages-flea-bottom-10000-ships-bruno-heller-1234717042/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a> was the first to report in early 2021 that a spinoff series about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, also known as "The Sea Snake," was being developed at HBO with a script from "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller and support from Martin himself.Although an older version of the character was introduced in the first season of "House of the Dragon," (played by Steve Toussaint), it's expected he will be recast for the stand-alone series, as it follows a much younger version of the character on his sea-faring journeys to Pentos, Dragonstone and around the bottom of Westeros.However, speaking to<a href="https://ew.com/tv/steve-toussaint-game-of-thrones-sea-snake-prequel-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Entertainment Weekly</a> in 2022, Toussaint said he would love to be involved, even if it's just for a brief scene.""If I'm lucky, I might say to them, 'Let me just be at the beginning [of the show] sitting with a book saying, 'Let me talk about my life,'" he said. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation," he added.<h2>"Ten Thousand Ships" and "Flea Bottom"</h2>At the same time that Deadline dropped the news about "Nine Voyages," it was also announced that another spinoff series titled "Ten Thousand Ships" was being considered at HBO too, alongside another project, "Flea Bottom," which would be set in the poorest slum district in King's Landing.While "Flea Bottom" has <a href="https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a37056025/game-of-thrones-spin-off-flea-bottom-scrapped/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">since been shelved</a>, it appears that "Ten Thousand Ships" is still going ahead. In an August 2022 interview with<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/21/arts/television/george-rr-martin-house-of-the-dragon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> The New York Times</a>, Martin stated that the series is set "like a thousand years before" the flagship series and described it as "an 'Odyssey'-like epic." Martin gave a progress update on the series in a <a href="https://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2024/06/11/awards-season-2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">June 2024 blog post</a>, announcing that Pulitzer-winning playwright Eboni Booth was writing a new pilot for "Ten Thousand Ships." Booth isn't the first writer to reportedly take a stab at the series: <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/05/game-of-thrones-amanda-segel-write-10000-ships-spinoff-1234763526/">Deadline</a> reported in 2021 that Amanda Segel ("Person of Interest") was attached to the project, and screenwriter Brian Helgeland told <a href="https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/man-on-fire-anniversary-20-years-interview-brian-helgeland-knights-tale-sequel">Inverse</a> that he had pitched a script but the series wasn't picked up at the time. "We're all very excited about this one," Martin wrote in the June blog post.
