Shea/Getty Images</p></div><p></p></div>The <keyword id="909848" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Oakland-Raiders">Oakland Raiders</keyword> have named <keyword id="1945908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Matt-McGloin">Matt McGloin</keyword> as the starting <keyword id="83188" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="quarterback">quarterback</keyword> for Sunday's game against Tennessee.</p>
<p>In a limited sense, it's not a surprise. McGloin was effective in a 28-23 win over Houston last week, and previous starter <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-quarterback-power-rankings-week-eleven-2013-11">Terrelle Pryor has fallen apart</a> since his hot start in September.</p>
<p>But when you consider all the money and resources Oakland has spent to acquire a franchise quarterback since 2011, it's remarkable that Matt McGloin is now the starting QB for this team.</p>
<p>In the last two years Oakland has spent $21.5 million and dealt four draft picks in trades for quarterbacks.</p>
<p>In October of 2011, they sent a 2012 first-round pick and a 2013 second-round pick to Cincinnati for Carson Palmer. They paid Palmer <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7128693/oakland-raiders-carson-palmer-took-5-million-pay-cut-season-according-source">$2.5 million in 2011</a> and <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7666192/carson-palmer-oakland-raiders-restructures-contract-source-says">$12.5 million in 2012</a> before flipping him to Arizona last spring.</p>
<p>To replace Palmer, the Raiders traded for Matt Flynn. In April of 2013 they sent a 2014 fifth-round pick and an unspecific 2015 pick to Seattle for Flynn. They <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9120385/oakland-raiders-trade-seattle-seahawks-matt-flynn">paid him $6.5 million</a> for one start before <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/matt-flynn-cut-made-145-million-one-good-game-2013-10">cutting him</a> last month.</p>
<p>After a 10-week trial for Pryor - who was a highly-touted prospect before getting kicked out of Ohio State - they're on to their third starter of the year.</p>
<p>McGloin is an undrafted rookie from Penn State. He came into training camp as the fourth-stringer, but ended up making the roster as the third quarterback. </p>
<p>The fact that he's starting is representative of the franchise's ineptitude in trading for quarterbacks.</p>
<p>That's not to say he's a bad player. He could end up being a Tony Romo-style late bloomer. But he is surely not the guy the franchise envisioned under center when they traded all those picks and signed all those big contracts.</p>

The Raiders Are Starting An Undrafted Rookie After Spending $21.5 Million And Four Draft Picks On QBs

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/586d1b92ee14b62a008b66e3-1333/undefined" alt="jack del rio" data-mce-source="Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP" /><p class="source"><span>Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Two weeks after looking like potential AFC Championship threats, the Oakland Raiders may be the lowliest team in the postseason.</p><p>Through 15 weeks, the Raiders built a 12-3 record, leading the competitive AFC West.</p><p>Though the Raiders looked flawed, at times - overly reliant on Derek Carr's arm, with a shabby defense, and two unimpressive outings against their division rivals, the Chiefs - they were nonetheless an intriguing young team with an explosive offense and enough defensive talent to put a scare into, say, the Patriots.</p><p>Two weeks later, the Raiders' season appears all but done, thanks to two brutal injuries.</p><p>In Week 16, after three quarters of dominating the Colts, Derek Carr broke his leg on a fourth-quarter sack, ending his season. The Raiders then turned to backup Matt McGloin, who injured his shoulder in their Week 17 loss to the Broncos.</p><p>With McGloin questionable for Saturday, the Raiders will likely turn to Connor Cook, a rookie quarterback with no career starts, to lead them in the playoffs, on the road, against the Texans, the defense that allowed the fewest total yards and yards per game in the regular season.</p><p>Not great.</p><p>In Week 17, Cook's only action of the season, he played passably, throwing 150 yards on 14-of-21 passing with a touchdown and interception.</p><p>Carr, who was considered an MVP candidate up until his injury, could have his case bolstered by the Raiders' performances without him. The Raiders didn't score after he left the game in Week 16, and they managed just six points in Week 17. Though the latter was against the stingy Broncos' defense, Carr and Co. put up 30 points against the Broncos in a Week 9 win. At times, this season, the Raiders' plan seemed to simply let Carr will them to victory, like in a Week 8 overtime win against the Bucs, when Carr threw for a franchise record 513 yards.</p><p>Barring an unexpected breakout performance from Cook, the Raiders look like long-shots to make noise in the playoffs. Without Carr's arm, the Raiders may have to rely on running back Latavius Murray and for the defense to create chances for them. The Raiders went from one of the most exciting playoff teams to seemingly hopeless because of 2 injuries

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59d397ca351ccf7a1a8b70a3-1182/derek carr.jpg" alt="derek carr" data-mce-source="Alex Brandon/AP" /><p class="source"><span>Alex Brandon/AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The Oakland Raiders' season took an ugly turn in Week 4 when Derek Carr left the game with a back injury.</p><p>Initially, the injury was thought to be back spasms, but on Monday, <a href="https://twitter.com/RAIDERS/status/914976168834514944">the Raiders announced</a> that Carr suffered a <span>transverse process fracture in his back and is expected to miss two to six weeks.</span></p><p><span>Two weeks, however, may be an optimistic projection, judging from <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/2017/10/2/16405504/derek-carr-out-back-fracture-injury-raiders">the reaction of Tony Romo</a> - who had the same injury in 2014 - on the broadcast.</span></p><p><span>"Oh boy, Jim [Nantz], oh no," Romo said as he saw Carr on the ground. "</span></p><p>For the Raiders, the injury is bad news unto itself, but it could have a deeper impact on their season if Carr misses significant time.</p><p>Thought to be the best team in the AFC West at the beginning of the season, the Raiders are now instead in a race with the 4-0 Kansas City Chiefs and the 3-1 Denver Broncos, both of whom look like possible Super Bowl contenders.</p><p>Likewise, the rest of the AFC is no cake-walk, and if the Raiders can't win the division, the fight for the two Wild Card spots will be tough. The AFC East sports the New England Patriots, the surprise 3-1 Buffalo Bills, and the super-surprise 2-2 New York Jets. The AFC South has three potential playoff teams in the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. And the AFC North has the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.</p><p>The Raiders are a deep team, but much of it comes down to Carr. Last season, when Carr got injured in Week 16, the team lost its next game, then lost the first game of the playoffs. This year, E.J. Manuel is the backup quarterback instead of Matt McGloin and Connor Cook, but leaks have been springing around the Raiders. Top receiver Amari Cooper has an ugly case of the drops this season, and Marshawn Lynch, the Raiders lead running back, has seen his yardage and yards per carry fall each week of the season.</p><p>The Raiders' next five games come against the Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers, Chiefs, Bills, and Miami Dolphins before they have a bye week. If Carr were to miss all five games and return after the bye, it's possible the Raiders could go 3-2 or 2-3 over that stretch and sit at 5-4 or 4-5 when Carr returns with enough time to make a playoff push. Derek Carr has a fractured back, and it could be a big blow to the Raiders' playoff hopes

<p>He was benched in early November in favor of Matt McGloin after throwing 10 interception to just five touchdowns in his first eight starts.</p>
<p>Rather than embracing the opportunity to regain the job going into 2014, Pryor's agent claims that the Raiders have sinister motives.</p>
<p>Here's what agent Jerome Stanley <a href="http://www.csnbayarea.com/raiders/pryors-agent-believes-allen-wants-terrelle-fail-vs-denver">told CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I think they're putting him in hopes that he fails. That's what I think coach is doing. I think they're putting him in hopes that he has a bad game, so he can then justify the Matt McGloin situation. I think that's what's going on, I do and it's ridiculous...</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"You have to understand the coach is putting him in, he doesn't want him to look good. And you can write that. He doesn't want him to look good because, if he looks good this week, it makes the past five weeks look like a bad decision. (Allen) doesn't want him to look good, he wants him to look bad. That is what is going on."</p>
<p>The theory is that coach Dennis Allen could save his own job by showing how awful his collection of quarterbacks is.</p>
<p>It seems like a stretch.</p>
<p>Pryor started the season well, showing a ton of promise as a dual-threat QB. But in his last four games as a starter his performance really dropped off. He threw nine interceptions and completed less than 60% of his passes in each of his final four starts.</p>
<p>Pryor distanced himself from the comments on Twitter:</p>

Terrelle Pryor's Agent Says The Raiders Are Trying To Sabotage Him By Letting Him Play

<p>This past weekend, he led his team to beat #16 ranked <keyword id="18877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Michigan">Michigan</keyword> over the weekend in a 43-40 four overtime thriller. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Hackenberg led the Nittany Lions on a fourth quarter comeback against undefeated Michigan after Penn State was down by 10. With less than a minute to go, Hackenberg and Penn State got one final shot. <br /></span></p>
<p>The first year starter completed 3 of 4 passes, including a miraculous throw and catch by wide receiver Allen Robinson to bring Penn State to Michigan's one yard-line. Hackenberg followed it up by scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season to tie the game with only 27 seconds left. </p>
<p>Penn State would go on to outlast the Wolverines in four overtimes to emerge as the victors. </p>
<p>Despite losing previous starter in Matt McGloin to the NFL Penn State hasn't lost a beat under second year coach Bill O'Brien. The 18-year-old Hackenberg has replaced the 23-year-old McGloin and executed O'Brien's spread offense perfectly. </p>
<p>Through six games, Hackenberg has passed for 1,672 yards (279 yards per game), 11 touchdowns to six interceptions. He is the only QB in the Big Ten to have multiple 300 yard passing games with at least three touchdowns. The rest of the conference quarterbacks combined have two. </p>
<p>Here's what O'Obrien had to say about him after the Michigan game:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I'm never surprised with Christian Hackenberg. I've known him for awhile now, I recruited him, and I was very fortunate to have him come to Penn State. He's a really great kid, he's 18-years-old, it's remarkable what he's been able to do at this point in the season...Nothing he does really surprises me."</p>

Freshman Quarterback At Penn State Is Already Making A Name For Himself

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/586d651dee14b6c7148b6736-1386/undefined" alt="dak prescott" data-mce-source="Brandon Wade/AP" /><p class="source"><span>Brandon Wade/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Dak Prescott had a historic rookie season to help the Cowboys win the NFC.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Two NFL teams enter the postseason starting rookie quarterbacks, though they surely did not expect to be in this position back in May.</p><p>And the two teams starting rookie quarterbacks, the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders, are in significantly different positions.</p><p>The Cowboys finished with the best record in the NFC at 13-3, led by the unlikely rookie duo of Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott, of course, was so good filling in for the injured Tony Romo that he won the starting job through the regular season.</p><p>The Raiders, meanwhile, cruised to 12-3 before losing third-year quarterback Derek Carr to a broken leg in Week 15. With backup QB Matt McGloin getting injured in Week 17, the Raiders are starting rookie quarterback Connor Cook against the Houston Texans for the Wild Card game on Saturday.</p><p>However, these two scenarios could never have happened without the typical wheeling and dealing that comes with the NFL Draft.</p><p><a href="http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/17905537/how-dallas-cowboys-almost-missed-qb-dak-prescott-2016-nfl">As ESPN's Adam Schefter recounted</a> in October, the Cowboys nearly didn't come away with Prescott in the 2016 NFL Draft. First, the Cowboys tried to trade late into the first round to draft Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch. After refusing to give up a second- and a third-round pick, Dallas was beaten out by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/denver-broncos-draft-paxton-lynch-after-trade-2016-4">Denver Broncos, who traded up to draft Lynch instead</a>.</p><p>Jerry Jones later admitted he regretted not meeting the Seattle Seahawks' (who owned the pick) demands, saying, "<span>I'm not gonna go jump from Dallas' tallest, so let's put this in perspective ... but if I had to do it all over again? I'd give the [third-round pick]."</span></p><p>Two rounds later, according to Schefter, the Cowboys were again targeting a quarterback, this time Michigan State's Connor Cook. However, Cleveland, who owned the 100th pick Dallas was trying to nab, traded it to Oakland instead. The Raiders used the pick to draft Cook, who will make his first NFL start in the playoffs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/586d6586ee14b618038b6803-1500/undefined" alt="connor cook" data-mce-source="Rick Scuteri/AP" /><p class="source"><span>Rick Scuteri/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Connor Cook will make his first NFL start in the playoffs.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Cowboys later used a fourth-round pick to draft Prescott. However, <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/02/report-chip-kelly-wanted-to-draft-dak-prescott-trent-baalke-said-no/">according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network</a>, Chip Kelly wanted the 49ers to draft Prescott earlier, but was shot down by GM Trent Baalke. It's unclear if the 49ers were targeting Prescott in the fourth round, but they drafted cornerback Rashard Robinson two spots ahead of Prescott, who then went to the Cowboys at pick No. 135.</p><p>This shuffling of players could have led to wildly different results this season. Denver, going into the draft, had a quarterback problem with only Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian on board. Though Siemian won the job in training camp, if they hadn't drafted Lynch, would they have pulled the trigger on trade for, say, Colin Kaepernick, who they were rumored to be targeting?</p><p>Nobody could have predicted the injuries to Tony Romo in preseason or to Derek Carr in Week 15, but the backup quarterbacks could have made this season a different story. Who could be starting for the Raiders in the Wild Card game if they had not traded up to draft Connor Cook?</p><p>Or, if the Cowboys drafted Lynch or Cook, would they still be in the position they're in today with one of them filling in for an injured Tony Romo. Would Romo have taken over again if Lynch or Cook were running the show? Would the 49ers have possibly competed for a playoff spot in Prescott was their quarterback?</p><p>These are all hypotheticals that could be asked each year, but this year, they feel especially pertinent. This year, things fell just right for Prescott to have a historic rookie season, while Cook will face a huge first test this Saturday, and Lynch will have to wait for his big moment.
