In order to nourish and nurture the talent within its workforce, Indian IT giant <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> has decided to restart its internal leadership institute and reward its executives on the basis of succession planning. This way, it would also reduce its reliance on outside talent. To give shape to the idea, a new leadership framework has been put into action, as per which executives are being asked to nurture talent from within their teams. In the recent past, its reliance on outside talent has resulted in Infosys hiring a number of highly-paid resources from outside India, including over 150 executives that were hired in onsite locations and were given over Rs 1crore a year in compensation. "We have to develop talent within. A company that depends disproportionately on outside talent is at risk of building a mercenary culture," co-chairman <keyword id="50299" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravi-Venkatesan">Ravi Venkatesan</keyword> told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/infosys-reboots-leadership-institute/articleshow/59209171.cms">ET</a>. "We are rebooting the <keyword id="446829" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys-Leadership-Institute">Infosys Leadership Institute</keyword> and we have created a new leadership and talent framework." This leadership institute was created in 2001, and has been on the back-burner ever since its former leader <keyword id="497185" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Matt-Barney">Matt Barney</keyword> quit in 2013 to start LeaderAmp. Since then, Infosys has seen a lot of internal turbulence, ranging from founder <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> returning and several top executives leaving the company. CEO <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword>’s decision to hire highly paid talent from his former employer <keyword id="6358384" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SAP">SAP</keyword> for Infosys is also said to have caused discord within the company. "When your top executives are leaving the company in a rush, like in 2013, what choice does a company have but to bring in talent from outside. You can't leave top roles empty. But yes, it is a good sign that they are trying to reduce the dependence on outside talent. Employees are more comfortable when there is growth path within," said an industry analyst on the condition of anonymity.

McCarthy said. "I wonder what they're up to now." McCarthy then played the tape, which starts very grainy at first. Two beagles come into view — one in a veil and one in a tuxedo.The man conducting the service then lays out some rules for the ceremony: no tears, jut barking is allowed."And now for the vows, we need to them join your paws please," he says to the owners standing behind the dog couple.The officiant then reads out the vows and declares Barney and Gigi dog and dog, for better or worse, or "for fleas or shedding, and all of your howling too.""By the power invested in me by the puppy law foundation, I now pronounce you a canine couple," he said. "You may lick your bride, Barney."The camera then pans to an Elvis impersonator performing on a small stage.Some of the guests are then interviewed about how happy they are to be part of the couple's special day, and there's a shot of Barney and Gigi cutting and eating the cake."VHS tapes," McCarthy says at the end of the clip. "The possibilities are endless."In the comments, people discussed the bizarre video. "This is a sign that these people had no concerns in their lives at this point," one person said. Another said: "I wasn't expecting Elvis, but I wasn't surprised."People also mused about the whereabouts of the dogs now. "I heard they retired," one comment reads. "Moved to a farm upstate."

A man who collects old video cassette tapes shared the weirdest footage he's ever found: A dog wedding

It was the spring of 1983, and Dorothy Swanson was angry.Her favorite television show, "Cagney &amp; Lacey," which had premiered a year earlier, was on the verge of cancellation after its first season got poor audience ratings. The married mother of three loved that the procedural centered on two female cops, Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey — fully formed characters who epitomized the struggles of second-wave feminism. "Cagney &amp; Lacey" spoke to her as no television show had before. She had to do something to keep it on the air.So she wrote a letter imploring CBS to save the show. Then she wrote another, and another.Swanson didn't know she was walking in the footsteps of the <a href="https://www.startrek.com/news/bjo-trimble-the-woman-who-saved-star-trek-part-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fan-led "Star Trek" letter-writing campaign</a> that had rescued that show from doom nearly two decades earlier, in 1966. "It just sort of fell into my lap," Swanson told me when I reached her over the phone.But after mailing hundreds of letters — some sneakily signed with other names to create the illusion of a bigger campaign — she had accomplished something incredible. Thanks to Swanson's tenacity, vociferous critics who supported the show, and savvy producers who embraced both, CBS gave "Cagney &amp; Lacey" a second chance. It would run for five more critically acclaimed seasons. Executives credited the outpouring of support from viewers and the letters they'd received as reasons for the reversal of fortune.In time, Swanson would parlay that success into a role as a Hollywood tastemaker, rubbing elbows with sitcom stars and network execs. And she'd do it by harnessing the power and enthusiasm of fans.<h2>A grassroots campaign rooted in passion</h2>"Dorothy Swanson undoubtedly started her first campaign because she was a big-time fan," said Michael Sparaga, the director of the 2018 documentary "<a href="https://www.victorymanproductions.com/films/uwf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United We Fan</a>," which chronicled Swanson's story. "Nobody types up 500-plus letters, forges signatures of friends and family, and mails them to CBS while also rallying thousands of other viewers through the media to do the same if they're not absolutely obsessed with a show."Swanson connected with Donna Deen, a fellow TV fan in Plano, Texas, who'd embarked on a similar letter-writing campaign to save the prestige-y hospital drama "St. Elsewhere." In 1984, the two formed Viewers for Quality Television, an advocacy group aimed at protecting high-value TV shows from cancellation.<div type="image" title="Dorothy Swanson wearing very '80s glasses on a podium at a VQT event." height="1004" width="1768" msid="105392456" hostid="261"></div>Swanson said in an interview from her home in Florida that while VQT "must be looked back on as rather quaint," writing letters "was, in its time, the thing to do."People who learned about VQT from critics' columns in newspapers and magazines could write to Swanson and pay a fee to become a member. Then they'd receive VQT's monthly newsletter and be able to vote on which shows VQT would endorse as "quality" — and thereby pledge to stand by if they were threatened.It was a simple strategy focused on democracy. And for more than 15 years, until 2000, it worked. In addition to "Cagney &amp; Lacey," the group strongly advocated smart hourlong dramas, including "Quantum Leap" and "China Beach." In doing so, it portended the type of fan advocacy that would become even more rampant with the advent of the internet.<h2>Ready for prime time</h2>VQT had discerning taste and supported well-remembered critical favorites like "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "ER."The group also supported the controversial '90s cop show "NYPD: Blue," which featured unprecedented-at-the-time swearing and nudity, after advertisers began to pull out. In a 1994 interview with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/06/business/media-business-television-popular-with-viewers-but-not-with-advertisers-nypd.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>, Swanson described it as "really a very moral show." It went on to win the Emmy for best drama series in 1995.But plenty of other VQT-supported shows, like "Frank's Place" and "Picket Fences," quietly disappeared into the mists of time.<div type="image" title="Deborah Messing, Dorothy Swanson, and Eric McCormack smiling for the camera at a VQT event." height="798" width="1140" msid="105392457" hostid="261"></div>Where today's fandoms are typically focused on a single show, VQT "became a community of television watchers who liked the same type of shows," Swanson said. At its peak, it had more than 5,000 members.The group was also singular enough in the '80s to garner attention from network executives and celebrities. Each year the group hosted a VQT convention in Los Angeles featuring panels with executives, writers, and actors, as well as an awards banquet where stars like Jerry Seinfeld, Ron Perlman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus would show up to accept their Q Awards.VQT became a part of the industry, representing viewers from a vaunted position that Swanson refers to as a "seat at the table." As an added bonus, stars would hug her when they saw her, invite her to their sets to watch VQT-approved shows during filming, and sometimes even call her up just to say hello.<div type="image" title="A panel of celebrities including Judith Light, Paul Reiser, Teri Hatcher, and Kathy Baker sitting in front of microphones." height="2766" width="4096" msid="105392458" hostid="261"></div>Swanson considered VQT as "sort of partners" with "the television journalists and the viewers," she said. Critics across the country had Swanson's phone number, and she had the numbers of showrunners, TV executives, and publicists, including heavy hitters like Les Moonves and Dick Wolf. VQT "took a stand on behalf of television, not against it," Swanson said in her 2000 book, "The Story of Viewers for Quality Television: From Grassroots to Prime Time."For better or worse, that symbiotic relationship between audience and industry doesn't exist today — now, as numerous streaming and social-media platforms aim to cater to each viewer's specific taste, the TV industry is increasingly personalized and fractured. (Just ask me about the time I protested outside Netflix's headquarters in 2021 to bring back "The OA" — there were only about 20 of us, and nobody treated our presence as anything more than a curiosity now.)And anyway, that relationship would eventually end up burning Swanson.Upholding the professional objectivity that lent VQT its legitimacy sometimes cost her friends and connections. Deen, Swanson's cofounder, dropped out after a few years over a disagreement about campaigning for the sitcom "Designing Women." And Barney Rosenzweig, the "Cagney &amp; Lacey" executive producer, never forgave Swanson's group for printing critiques of his follow-up show, "The Trials of Rosie O'Neill," after helping launch Swanson and VQT to prominence.<h2>A fan empire in decline</h2>At 84, Swanson doesn't watch much TV anymore because of vision loss, but she looks back fondly on VQT's impact on the industry during its active years: the shows it saved and the stars it supported. She said that by the time she decided to close down VQT in 2000 amid declining membership, "we had accomplished what we set out to do, which was educate viewers in how to make a difference by themselves."Twenty-three years later, the TV landscape is nearly unrecognizable — as is the way fans campaign to keep their shows on the air.<div type="image" title="Jerry Seinfeld on a podium at a Viewers for Quality Television event." height="1080" width="1920" msid="105392459" hostid="261"></div>It's difficult for fans to speak as one voice loudly enough to attract attention when shows' audiences are small and divided. Plus, it's easy for networks and platforms to kick shows to the curb for any reason at all, especially when they aren't obligated to disclose viewership numbers.It's a far cry from Swanson's direct line to CBS's C-suite.Because Viewers for Quality Television was a product of its analog environment, it's hard to imagine an organization like it existing today."They were discerning, disciplined, passionate, and I miss them," said Matt Roush, a senior critic at TV Guide whom Swanson fondly recalled as one of VQT's most loyal supporters.But there are plenty of lessons today's fans can learn from VQT about the importance of building community, the difficulties of remaining objective, and the fickleness of the industry.VQT's "idea of 'We're your core audience, we are valuable' has never gone away," said Mel Stanfill, a professor at the University of Central Florida who studies fan labor, including fan campaigning.Sparaga said what he found most interesting about VQT "was that not every member loved every show VQT supported, but they all loved belonging to an organization that was dedicated to supporting higher quality TV in general." There was a broad feeling of loyalty and obligation among members: They "would write letters to try and save TV shows they might not even be watching," Sparaga said, "because then other members would write letters to support the shows they were watching."It's a simple but game-changing idea: Everyday viewers deserved programming that challenged them, enthralled them, and changed their minds even as it entertained them.For her part, Swanson was glad for an opportunity to reflect on her days as doyenne of VQT. "If you're going to take a path less walked, then leave your footprint," she told me. In the billion dollar sunshine, they stood around a wreath of white orchids, the flowers Wohlman tended when he wasn't bloodying his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sportspage">opponents</a>. Wohlman's movie star good looks had survived a broken jaw, a textbook pugilist's nose, and multiple other facial traumas. One eulogist, a longtime sparring partner, boasted about kicking Kid Yamaka's ass. Some of the bereaved wore jackets embroidered with Wohlman's tag line, "All class." His young widow gave out t-shirts for Kid Yamaka's "retirement party." Some grievers wore wetsuits. Others went shirtless. They embraced and stood close, mostly wearing masks. Wohlman had survived a nightmarish childhood in the Valley to become a promising welterweight and telegenic media star. He had hoped to fight for a world championship. However realistic the dream, his ongoing struggles with <keyword id="6357421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="addiction">addiction</keyword>, made it less so. "I'll just be honest," he said in the Emmy-nominated docu-series, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgyf9REce6A">Why We Fight</a>." "I have a problem with opiates." Yet for a time he was able to overcome his illness to express himself as a fighter and as a man with an enviable capacity for love and empathy. "There's nothing more therapeutic than being of service to somebody," Wohlman had said. As one mourner said: "He often helped me when I should have been helping him." Wohlman wasn't observant, but he cared about his heritage. In 1933, Max Baer wore Star of David trunks when he defeated Hitler's favorite fighter and former heavyweight champion, Max Schmelling, at Yankee Stadium. (Baer's victory led to an affair with Greta Garbo. Schmelling later defeated Joe Louis and then lost to him in a 1938 title fight dubbed the "battle of the century.") One of the most celebrated Jewish fighters was Barney Ross, a tough Chicago kid, the son of a murdered rabbi, who held world championships in three weight classes, including welterweight. Later, Ross enlisted in the Marines and earned a Silver Star for valor <keyword id="31408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fighting">fighting</keyword> Japanese soldiers at Guadalcanal. While recovering from his wounds, Ross became addicted to morphine. There's a 1957 movie about him called "<a href="https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/5506/monkey-on-my-back#overview">Monkey on My Back</a>."Ogens' film juxtaposes Wohlman wrapping his hands for the ring with wrapping tefillin. With the phylacteries, a rabbi tells him, "Your arms become instruments not of destruction but of God." Wohlman shadow boxes across the old city of Jerusalem, a Rocky sequel that never got made. A more memorable sequence, to my mind a more Jewish one, comes in the first episode of the docu-series "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgyf9REce6A">Why We Fight</a>." Wohlman travels to Tijuana, for an easy fight to juice his won/loss record and with that his prospects for a higher profile bout back home. Wohlman scores a first round TKO against a tomato can named Roman Mendez. After the fight, he visits Mendez' barrio to meet the boxer's family and see the pig Mendez buys with his prize money. Wohlman meets another fighter, a candy hawker by day, and encourages him to train harder, and to be faithful to his wife.<div type="image" title="Two men wearing grey suits stand side by side, as one pumps his fist" height="4015" width="3267" msid="84100012" hostid="261"></div>A later episode distills the grim economics of bloodsport even more starkly. In Cambodia, Wohlman meets a 10-year old prize-fighter and his trainer/promoter, the self-described "Don King of Cambodia," who both cares for and profits from pre-pubescent fighters. "I want [the 10-year old] to be wealthy and whatever his version of successful is," Wohlman said. "But I don't think what I hope he'll become and the reality will meet." Wohlman didn't just perform concern on camera. For the last two years of his life, he directed <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLSxnjTMObk/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loadingding">Ring of Hope</a>, a <keyword id="6362171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Boxing">boxing</keyword> program for at-risk kids in Dallas. He'd hoped to open a branch in L.A., hinting at a life he could have led once his dreams of glory subsided. Instead the people who loved him gathered on the beach to say goodbye. After the tributes, the singing and the crying, two guys in wetsuits bore the wreath out to sea. As the waves enveloped it, the crowd applauded.<h2>"High-speed miserable chess"</h2>I first heard of Wohlmann a few years ago from my friend Vanessa Adriance, a corporate litigator who became one of his closest friends. A serious amateur jock, Adriance had been cardio boxing for a couple years at an L.A. gym when he showed up.Wohlman introduced himself as an acolyte of Freddie Roach, a legendary Hall of Fame trainer whose gym, Wild Card Boxing, is on the second floor of a Hollywood strip mall. Wohlman began to teach real boxing, how to throw a punch, how to dodge one, not anything Adriance had to worry about when she was just getting sweaty whaling on a bag.Adriance found Wohlman "magnetic" and, with her marriage falling apart, she was open to new experiences. She and another woman decided they wanted to box each other. Wohlman wasn't interested in supervising them, but he offered to spar with Adriance. He wouldn't knock her out, but he'd punch her and she could punch back. Adriance started going to every class he taught, pestering him for months until he told her to get a mouth guard at the <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sports">Sports</keyword> Authority. He found some dusty headgear lying around the gym and rubbed her face with vaseline - "greased" her - to reduce the damage from his punches.<div type="image" title="Two people wearing casual exercise clothing are seen sparring in a boxing ring." height="810" width="1080" msid="84100013" hostid="261"></div>"It doesn't feel good to get punched of course," Adriance said of that first day of sparring but the pain didn't overwhelm her. "What I remember is being disoriented." It felt like she was underwater and didn't know which way was up. For some people, Wohlman said, throwing the first punch is harder. Not for my friend. "I don't know what that says about me," she said. She thinks she landed a sloppy jab or two.She also found it intellectually engaging, like "high-speed miserable chess," litigation in the raw. As she describes it, Wohlman indulged her, like a father driving with a toddler on his lap. But she refused to let go of the wheel. After three rounds she felt overwhelmed by the adrenaline rush, "Something about hard sparring cleanses your brain," she said "It will rinse you clean or it will break you emotionally, whatever dam is holding it together." As she got to know Wohlman, she learned his story. (Wohlman's widow didn't respond to interview requests for this story.) His mother, he has said in <a href="https://vimeo.com/188035088">interviews</a>, changed the locks on him when he was 15 and he went to live with his father. They committed crimes and did meth together, he has said, until a police raid one morning. Wohlmann flushed money and drugs down the toilet and the cops told him his father was going to prison. When Wohlman got fired from the gym, she followed him to the hallowed and intimidating confines of Wild Card. She felt the pull of the gym's "weird, fast intimacy." People whose names she didn't know would wipe up her blood or reach into her mouth to pull out her guard. It seems she's spoken about little else since.Wohlman won the Los Angeles Golden Gloves in 2010 and then went pro, stringing together a professional record of 10-3-2 according to the site BoxRec. No brawler, he had an old-school fighting style and cared about technique. "He was a lot tougher and meaner and angrier than his boxing style almost allowed him to be," Javier Calderon, a longtime sparring partner said. "He was willing to take a shot to give a shot."Calderon, who describes himself as "a gainfully unemployed artist," sparred with and mentored Wohlman for about 12 years. "I beat his ass until he got better." Wohlman lacked a "concussive" punch but he was accurate. Calderon thinks Wohlman may have been responsible for tearing his retina, an injury that needed surgery. "His jab was working beautifully and digging into my eyeballs"<div type="image" title="A man is seen listing his shirt to reveal his chest tattoos" height="3000" width="2209" msid="84100015" hostid="261"></div>"One of his love languages was sparring," said Eli Cobillas, who knew Wohlman in Dallas. He had a "slick, crafty" style and liked to put on soul or jazz before he started punching. Eric Brown, a celebrated trainer who named Wohlman Kid Yamaka, said Wohlman liked to humiliate his opponents by standing right in front of them while somehow remaining untouchable. Calderon is a tee-totaller who says he was never around Wohlman when he was high. Rather he emphasized Wohlman's drive to improve himself. "I knew that even when things were going good, it's a balancing act, a tightrope walk," Calderon said. "There were times when he faltered and faltered hard." In December Wohlman came back to California and went to a rehab facility in the desert east of LA. It was the first time he was really sober since he was 19, he told Adriance, our mutual friend. In rehab he learned to play chess, which reminded him of slow-motion boxing. On January 29 he <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CKp5bwVA00s/">posted</a> a picture of a 60-days sober key chain on Instagram. Adriance last spoke to Wohlman two weeks later, on the Friday before Valentine's Day. He said he was coming out of a meeting with someone he'd met in rehab. He died the next day. His body turned up at a gas station bathroom.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li style="font-weight: 400;">David Sambur and Matt Nord have been quietly settling into their new roles as co-heads of Apollo Global Management's $77 billion private equity business.</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">The pair are not household names in finance but have built a reputation for themselves as perhaps the most "Apolloesque" dealmakers at Leon Black's shop, working on deals spanning from healthcare to sports.&#xa0;</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">Business Insider spoke with a handful of their colleagues, including their boss, and reviewed a number of their deals, to offer a clearer picture of who will lead one of Apollo's most important business lines.&#xa0;</li></ul>David Sambur doesn't have a LinkedIn profile, or any social media presence for that matter.Most of his public comments appear in canned press releases, like when his massive firm, Apollo Global Management agreed to acquire Shutterfly, the US digital imaging company in June.&#xa0;Sambur, who is stepping into a leadership role at Apollo, will struggle to stay out of the limelight much longer.&#xa0;He's now taking the reins of Apollo's $77 billion private equity unit, alongside his colleague Matt Nord. The two have worked together for the past 15 years, ever since they joined Apollo as investment bankers from Salomon Smith Barney.Nord, 40, and Sambur, 39, are not household names in finance. But they have gradually built a reputation as some of the most "Apolloesque" dealmakers within the firm, known for their contrarian investing style, making bold bets that other PE firms wouldn't make and then executing those deals successfully.&#xa0;In their new roles, they oversee the second-largest of three business divisions at Apollo, which also has a more than $200 billion credit investing unit, as well as a $34 billion "real assets" unit, encompassing investing in physical assets like real estate, land and equipment.&#xa0;<h2>Private equity's unpleasant press</h2>In interviews with Business Insider, Sambur and Nord said they will now take a more hands-on approach to communicating the firm's PE deals and investment strategy, at a time when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-wall-street-plays-major-role-in-death-of-retail-2019-7">private equity's role in the economy has come under scrutiny</a> in the 2020 presidential race and candidates like Elizabeth Warren are calling for more transparency and accountability from the industry.&#xa0;Warren, who is now neck-and-neck with Joe Biden as <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/10/elizabeth-warren-2020-polls-frontrunner">the leading Democratic presidential candidate</a>, has villainized PE executives as part of her campaign, saying they take over companies, load them with debt, strip assets, and then walk away - rich from huge management fees - when they go bankrupt. She has proposed legislation that would bring a 100 percent tax on fees earned by private equity firms and create laws to protect workers' financial interests in the event of bankruptcies.&#xa0;Last Friday, Warren tweeted about the shut down of Splinter News, a private equity owned news outlet, saying "Private equity firms are sucking the value out of our companies, and wiping out newspapers and digital news outlets."Apollo's stock, which had been up 2.3% for the day, then saw its gains erased instantly.Apollo did not own Splinter News, but the tweet linked to a 2018 article that was critical of the private equity industry. More recent critical articles have surfaced as well, including recent <a href="https://www.axios.com/private-equity-employment-job-losses-40bbf941-0815-4046-b777-e95a29e925d8.html">news reports</a> of a newly-released <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3465723">academic study</a> looking at private equity buyouts between 1980 and 2013, finding that PE ownership of companies led to fewer jobs there.&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;Meanwhile, Apollo itself has had its own share of unwelcome press coverage.In recent months, the firm's founder, Leon Black, has been faced with questions by reporters, investors and an analyst on an earnings call, about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier who was charged with underage sex trafficking until he died by suicide in a New York jail. (Epstein <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-was-director-of-leon-blacks-foundation-for-10-years-2019-7">once ran Black's charitable organization</a>,&#xa0;though Black has not been linked to any wrongdoing.)People close to the Apollo leadership change say the Epstein news has not played a factor in the timing of the appointments, with one person stressing that Black's former friendship with Epstein is a personal matter, without consequence to Apollo the institution.&#xa0;Rather, the appointments reflect a pivotal time in the private equity industry, when prolific founders of some of the best-known PE shops, such as KKR, The Carlyle Group and TPG, are ceding power to a younger generation of leaders to take their firms forward into the future.&#xa0;Business Insider spoke with a handful of Nord and Sambur's colleagues, including their boss, and researched their deals to offer a clearer picture of who will now influence the direction of one of the world's most powerful money managers.<h2>Two 'Apolloesque' dealmakers</h2>By all accounts, Nord and Sambur's ascension within Apollo has been a long time coming, with senior management handing off responsibilities more than two years ago, when they started working more closely with then-PE head Scott Kleinman.Nord and Sambur will continue reporting to Kleinman in his new role as co-president of Apollo's entire business, including areas in which it has expanded such as real estate and credit.&#xa0;"I had the job for nine years," Kleinman told Business Insider. "It was time to bring in some fresh perspective and showcase the talent we have in the organization."&#xa0;Kleinman said that Nord and Sambur were clear standouts for the roles, in part because of their dealmaking instincts, as illustrated in a handful of recent buyouts - deals, he said, that followed a pattern of buying companies others weren't interested in and then jamming to improve their balance sheets.&#xa0;Nord, for one, has been busy managing a healthcare company.&#xa0;Last July, Nord was behind Apollo's<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-lifepoint-health-m-a-apollo-glo-mgmt/apollo-to-buy-lifepoint-in-latest-private-equity-bet-on-healthcare-idUSKBN1KD1CA"> $5.6 billion acquisition</a> of Tennessee-based hospital operator LifePoint Health.The deal, <a href="https://www.nashvillepost.com/business/health-care/hospital-management/article/21019481/apollo-bid-backed-out-before-striking-final-lifepoint-deal">which came after stop-and-go sale negotiations over price</a>, gave LifePoint a whole new chain of hospitals throughout rural areas in the United States as Apollo merged the company with another one of its health businesses, RCCH HealthCare Partners.&#xa0;Personality-wise, Nord has been described as pleasant to work with, a "sweet guy" one colleague said, who makes executives feel comfortable in their skin rather than hammering them with Shark Tank style questions. His tone is almost professorial.Sambur, on the other hand, is known for his stomach to stick with an investment despite unexpected business challenges.&#xa0;That's at least how the CEO of golf club company, ClubCorp, knows him."When things don't work out the way you hope and you watch someone consistently take the high road, it's a real compliment to the human being and the executive," said David Pillsbury, who joined ClubCorp as its CEO in 2018. Pillsbury didn't get into specifics, but said that he's seen Sambur make business decisions based on "what's right and fair" rather than what may be written in a contract.&#xa0;As soon as Pillsbury joined ClubCorp, he met with Sambur at his New York City headquarters and the private equity executive encouraged him to expand the company from a simple golf club into areas like entertainment and fitness.&#xa0;As part of this vision, ClubCorp launched an app that allowed members to order food and make tee-time reservations. It also bought a controlling stake in a golf entertainment company called BigShots Golf, which produces private and family friendly events where both golfers and non-golfers can play simulated golf games on electric screens, in both indoor and outdoor venues.&#xa0;Irina Novoselsky, CEO of CareerBuilder, said Sambur has a "high sense of urgency" and helped modernize the company with artificial intelligence. And Shutterfly CEO, Ryan O'Hara, said Sambur can clinch unlikely deals. He saw this when Sambur helped combine Shutterfly and Snapfish, an online photo storage and printing services company.&#xa0;O'Hara said that Shutterfly had previously sought to partner with Snapfish but "never found a way to make it happen." But with Sambur's persistence, and negotiating the deal without Shutterfly directly involved, he was able to make it work. "He navigated some unique dynamics to do that," said O'Hara.&#xa0;Other growing companies that have Sambur's fingerprints on them include online employment company CareerBuilder, which Apollo bought in 2017; Rackspace, a Texas-based cloud computing company that Apollo in 2016; and Outerwall, the owner of Redbox video kiosks, which Apollo bought in 2014.&#xa0;<h2>No special traditions, just work</h2>Nord and Sambur officially learned of their appointments a couple weeks before Apollo's announcement, when they met with senior firm members, though it had been in the works for about a year.Both were already involved in deciding annual compensation. In the near term, the promotions meant some additional administrative duties: meetings with HR about internal audits and managing the private equity unit's budget.&#xa0;There wasn't even really a formal vote on the appointments, people familiar with the matter said. Bill de Blasio doubles down on his questions about Hillary Clinton

Aside from the way uniformed folks seem to speak in acronyms - "I was on the FOB when the IDF hit, so I radioed the TOC" - there's also a series of commonly used phrases which deserve some attention.
"15 minutes prior to 15 minutes prior"
Military people are taught that they must show up to everything (especially an official formation) at least 15 minutes early.
The 15 minutes to 15 minutes arises as the order filters down through the ranks. The captain wants everyone to meet at 0600, so the master sergeant wants folks to arrive at 0545, and when it finally hits the corporal people are told to show up at midnight.
"A good piece of gear" (in reference to people)
Only in the service is it OK to refer to one of your coworkers or (worse yet and most frequently) a person working for you in a section you manage as "a good piece of gear."

A Blue Falcon is someone who blatantly throws another Marine/soldier/sailor/airman under the bus.
"Breaking it down Barney-style"
Refers to the kid show "Barney and Friends." When something is broken down "Barney-style," it's being explained as if to a child.
"Days and a wake-up"
A "wake-up" refers to the last day you will be some place (generally while deployed). So, if a servicemember is getting ready for bed on a Sunday, and flying out on a Friday, he'll say "four days and a wake-up."
A "drug deal"
When personnel or materiel are obtained through unofficial channels.
"Embrace the suck"
Military service isn't all fun. In fact, it is mostly suck.
For every five seconds of hanging out of a helicopter, there are countless eternities spent enduring safety briefs and doing mundane tasks (picking up cigarette butts, buffing floors, toilets, etc.). And then there is the unpleasantness of being pinned beneath and unable to escape an ever-present rank structure.
Troops are encouraged to embrace this sad reality.

Field stripping can also be used informally to describe taking apart anything.
If a Humvee becomes stuck or broken outside of base, troops will field strip it of anything classified or of value prior to leaving it behind.
If you park your car in a bad part of town, it may be on cinder blocks by the next morning, completely field stripped.
"Full battle-rattle"
This phrase refers to all the gear servicemen and women are required to carry outside the wire. Generally: flak jacket with protective plates, Kevlar, 180 rounds of ammunition, water, rations, rifle.
It's called "battle rattle" because - unless we're talking about Navy SEALs - walking with all this stuff usually makes noise.
"Gear adrift, is a gift"
Leaving something unattended is your own fault.
Conversely, someone who takes unattended gear has not stolen it, they've "tactically acquired" it. Needless to say, if they get caught, it's still larceny under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Tactical acquisition is taught in boot camp, where recruits from one platoon will prey on another possibly less-aware platoon in order to get supplies and bragging rights.
"Good initiative, bad judgement"
When a problem needs to be solved but the selected means of solving the problem is itself more problematic.
Generally, it shows "good initiative" because the problem might have been above the pay grade of person trying to solve it.
"Grunt by association"
Said as a compliment: Someone who does not have the official qualification in an infantry field, who has worked on a daily basis with the infantry.
Often said of Artillerymen or drivers, usually folks augmented for periods of time deployed with the infantry.

"Lance corporal underground"
Another Corps-specific phrase. Refers to the somewhat ill-informed, ubiquitous network of junior Marines. Word seems to spread around this network like viral content and largely reflects what junior personnel really feel about a subject, course of action, or senior leader.
"Mandatory Fun" or "Mandofun"
Office dinner parties or get togethers that are mandatory. Sometimes these are just understood as mandatory, other times the order is given expressly.
"No impact, no idea"
If a shooter on the range is so far off target that spotters don't see an impact. Used loosely to mean that the speaker doesn't understand an idea, or that someone is totally clueless.
Similar to "high and off to the right," which is the military equivalent of "out of left field" - a personality type gone crazy, or an idea that no one saw coming.

Refers directly to when troops use smoke to signal an incoming helicopter.
In vernacular, it means to "leave in a hurry."
"Pucker factor"
Refers to the anus and a frightening situation.
"Rainbow PT gear"
Rainbow means that the unit is wearing whatever sporty gear they want to wear to do "physical training," that the unit will not be in any matching PT uniform.

Being unproductive, horsing around, or literally smoking and joking.

A person or situation that is incredibly screwed up. If it's a situation, often "everyone has to take a bite" of said soup sandwich.
"Standby to standby" and "hurry up and wait"
Believe it or not, the military is government, and government isn't always efficient.
"Standby" is what's called a "preparatory command." Usually the order to standby alerts a unit that it will be receiving some kind of marching orders - "standby to launch."
Unofficially, it's used to tell junior members to be ready and wait. Often, troops find themselves waiting for long periods of time due to logistics or command indecisiveness.
Said sarcastically, "standby to standby" means that a unit is waiting in order to wait some more.
"Hurry up and wait," also said sarcastically, pokes fun at the military's propensity to perform tasks quickly, and then sit idly (yet no less ready) to perform another task for long periods of time.

5-minute morning routines that can make your whole day better

On Dec. 12, House Speaker <keyword id="51016" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="John-Boehner">John Boehner</keyword> finally conveyed the bewildered sentiment that so many <keyword id="66537" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republicans">Republicans</keyword> shared as far back as August. 
Speaking at a press conference where <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/boehner-conservative-groups-budget-deal-heritage-club-for-growth-2013-12" target="_blank">he said outside conservative groups have "lost all credibility,"</a> Boehner referenced comments that <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/dorsey/heritage-action-ceo-to-fox-news-we-cant-repeal-obamacare-unt" target="_blank">Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham made</a> toward the end of October's federal government shutdown - one that Boehner suggested Republicans were pushed into by the "defund Obamacare"-happy outside conservative groups. 
"Everybody understands that we will not be able to repeal this law until 2017," Needham had told Fox News - as in, repeal isn't possible until a Republican is in the White House. To Boehner, that was a tacit admission that these groups knew their strategy was unworkable. 
"Are you kidding me?!" he bellowed on Thursday. 
A House GOP leadership aide told Business Insider on Thursday that for Boehner, the frustration has been building for the past three years.
But what <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/budget-deal-boehner-conservative-groups-heritage-club-for-growth-2013-12" target="_blank">motivated Boehner to speak up so forcefully over the past two days</a> was the conservative groups' criticism of the <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> deal brokered by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). Boehner noted in his comments that that much of that criticism came before the deal was made public. 
"When you criticize something and you have no idea what you're criticizing, you've lost your credibility," Boehner said. 
Boehner didn't mention them by name, but four influential conservative groups have denounced the budget deal for busting the discretionary spending caps set under sequestration - Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans for Prosperity, and FreedomWorks. 
Dan Holler, a spokesman for Heritage Action, dismissed Boehner's criticism that the groups were pre-emptive. 
"No one close to this deal was surprised by our opposition or the timing of our opposition," Holler said. "This is a completely fabricated narrative."
One by one, the groups pushed back against Boehner's comments. Barney Keller, a spokesman for the Club for Growth, pointed to a statement Club President Chris Chocola issued on Wednesday, when Boehner engaged in his first round of criticism against the groups. 
"We stand with Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Tom Coburn, Rand Paul, members of the Republican Study Committee and every other fiscal conservative who opposes the Ryan-Murray deal," Chocola said. "After carefully reviewing the budget deal, on which we never commented until it was complete, we determined that it would increase the size of government. We support pro-growth proposals when they are considered by <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. In our evaluation, this isn't one of those."
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe responded by questioning Boehner's credibility. 
"Speaker Boehner may not care about what fiscally conservative groups do, but grassroots Americans still care about what he's doing in Washington," Kibbe said. 
"When it comes to 'credibility,' actions speak louder than words. And right now, it looks like the Speaker is leading the charge for spending increases and recruiting Democrat votes in the House to help get it done."
Many Republicans on and around Capitol Hill wondered why Boehner didn't go on the offensive two or three months ago, when leadership went along with the "defund Obamacare" push that eventually led to the government shutdown. 
One Republican congressional aide complained in September that Cruz, the leader of the "defund" movement in the Senate, didn't have a real strategy beyond expecting President Obama to sign a rollback of his signature legislative achievement in a fancy, Rose Garden ceremony. 
Kevin Madden, a GOP strategist who worked on the Romney campaign, said he thinks Boehner knows that the shutdown has changed things. Republicans have improved their standing in public polls so quickly because of the disastrous rollout of the Affordable Care Act, to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/poll-2014-congressional-ballot-obamacare-gop-democrats-2013-11" target="_blank">point where they are back to being favored on generic congressional ballots</a>.
It's clear, Madden said, that Boehner doesn't want to risk that goodwill with another shutdown-type situation precipitated by those groups.
"Boehner's sending a signal that some of the tactics favored by outside organizations in the past didn't work and he's prepared to do things differently," Madden said.
"The last few months he was more than willing to work with members in the conference who felt differently, but the shutdown changed things. Boehner won't allow a winning 2014 debate framed around Obamacare get lost in another shutdown."

More than 140 tech leaders agree: 'Trump would be a disaster for innovation'

So, having recently covered Tips for Surviving a <a href="http://gselevator.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/congratulations-summer-interns-of-2013-grab-a-pen-here-are-a-few-words-of-wisdom/">Goldman Sachs Internship</a> and Attending a <a href="http://gselevator.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/how-to-survive-a-sporting-event-with-your-boss/">Sporting Event With Your Boss</a>, my latest attempt (by request) is a fresh, succinct, and definitive guide to dressing like an investment banker.
The genesis of this post is simple; American men dress like s---. 
It doesn’t matter where you look, from the endless stream of bright-eyed but hopeless-looking students vying for the ever-shrinking number of analyst positions on Wall Street, to the haggard, white-collar, middle class masses traipsing their way from airport lounge to departure gate, while getting Hilton Reward Points rich and Chipotle fat.
Who better to help than <a href="https://twitter.com/GSElevator">the aggregated and infinite wisdom of</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/GSElevator">GSElevator</a>, with a comprehensive list of business fashion tips from the halls of Goldman Sachs?
So, here we go…
Shoes
<ul>
<li>No brogues, wing-tipped, or square-toed shoes. </li>
</ul>
#1: He's really wearing square-toed shoes...
#2: Wait, it's intern season already?
<ul>
<li>Stick with loafers; they’re more comfortable and convenient. And the conventional wisdom that they lack the formality of traditional lace-ups has long-since expired.</li>
<li>If you aren’t confident in your innate fashion sense, keep the shoes black when wearing a suit. There’s no need to attempt hazel Bottega Venetas and a matching belt with a monastral blue suit. In most cases, you can’t pull it off.</li>
<li>Prada and Gucci; start and end there. Decent $700 shoes will last you 3-4x times longer than something you pick up from Bloomingdale’s for $300. Do the math.</li>
<li>Cedar shoetrees are an absolute must. They absorb moisture, stiff-arm the signs of aging, and otherwise materially extend the life of your shoes.</li>
<li>Don’t forget to get your housekeeper a decent shine kit for Christmas. And make sure she uses it.</li>
</ul>
Socks
<ul>
<li>Unless you are married to a Sloane Ranger or studied Classics at Cambridge, leave the pink Richard James socks at home. It’s not Ladies’ Day at Ascot.</li>
</ul>
 #1: Most Brits aren't gay, but their socks are.
<ul>
<li>Calvin Klein or Giorgio Armani makes some great calve-high plain black socks that never change with the season. And just as Michael Jordan insisted on a new pair of shoes every game, you need to keep the socks fresh. </li>
<li>Buy at least 20 identical pair every six months. </li>
</ul>
#1: I wear a brand new pair of socks every day. That's probably my only indulgence. That, and watches... And wine.
<ul>
<li>The ‘no socks’ look is disgusting, and is actually a stated violation of many corporate dress codes, particularly for banks.</li>
</ul>
Pants/Trousers
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
No cuffs and no pleats; pleats are for guys with gunts (front asses). 
</li>
</ul>
#1: Dude, cuffed pants are for limo drivers.
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
Belt loops are optional. If you have a decent tailor, rock the side tabs. 
</li>
</ul>
#1: Did you forget your belt today?
#2: I don't need one; did you forget to get your suit tailored?
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
Actually, side tabs are rather convenient if you are a junior banker. You’ve got less time for the gym and spend many a lunch and dinner hunched over your desk. Throw in the boozy nights out and extravagant client dinners and it’s a recipe for looking like 2011 Alec Baldwin.

</ul>
Belts/Suspenders
<ul>
<li>This is pretty obvious - nothing garish or obnoxious, and this includes those ridiculous monogrammed silver buckles that all boys in Greenwich get for their 14th birthday.</li>
<li>A few years ago, we had a 1st year analyst walk across the trading floor with a Gucci ‘G’ belt buckle. “Hey bubba, I didn’t know The Gap made belts,” bellows out a trader. “Um, it’s Gucci,” the kid snaps back. The words are barely out of his mouth before he realizes he’s being mocked in front of half a dozen guys and just made it a lot worse. That was all it took; the kid was never able to earn even a modicum of respect after that, and ended up leaving the firm less than a year later.</li>
<li>No suspenders, period. Who do you think you are, Matt “GG” Defusco?</li>
</ul>
Shirts
<ul>
<li>The infamous blue shirt and white collar is acceptable, as long as the shade of blue isn’t too deep and accompanied with a power tie. This ode to Gekko works much better today in a light pink, baby blue, or lavender shirt, and without a tie.</li>
<li>Skip the monograms… Unless your initials are D.I.K.</li>
<li>No shirt pockets or collar buttons. This isn’t a 1994 Brooks Brothers catalogue.</li>
<li>Make sure your shirts are tapered appropriately. If you want to see how ridiculous ‘blousy’ looks, go back and watch some old Seinfeld reruns.</li>
<li>Have new shirts made every year and donate the old ones to Career Gear, a great non-profit that provides interview <keyword id="15176" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="clothes">clothes</keyword> to low income individuals.</li>
<li>French cuffs are fine, provided that the cufflinks aren’t straight out of the Donald J. Trump collection.</li>
<li>And if you sweat, wear a damn undershirt, you slob. Besides, a $50 t-shirt will save numerous $200 dress shirts from your disgusting armpits.</li>
</ul>
Ties
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
It’s all about the Windsor knot, with the perfectly symmetrical triangle. A half or full Windsor are both fine, depending on the thickness of the tie and the spread of the collar.
</li>
</ul>
MD#1: Handshakes and tie knots. I don't have time for someone that can't master those basic skills.
<ul>
<li>Skip the dimple that creates that obnoxious crease; you’re not Al Sharpton.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Sorry interns and analysts, no Hermès. </li>
</ul>
#1: Don't show up to an interview in a Hermès tie. I don't give a f*ck if you can afford it, you have to earn it.
#1: Hermes ties are like Air Jordans for white people.

<li dir="ltr">
Everyone has a favorite tie, but don’t wear it every damn week.
</li>
</ul>
#1: There's nothing pretentious about keeping a tie journal. It keeps me on a solid 10-12 week rotation.
Suit Jacket
<ul>
<li>You can’t go wrong with two-button, notched-lapel, and single-breasted. Skip the three-button suit altogether.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Absolutely no double-breasted herringbone. It’s gone and never coming back. Sorry, David Letterman.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Avoid the peaked lapel, unless it’s on a single-button, casual suit.</li>
<li dir="ltr">In terms of color, keep it to various shades of gray and navy, with a few varieties of pinstripes. That’s all you need.</li>
</ul>
#1: Is that a brown suit? The back office is in Jersey City, pal.
<ul>
<li>No need to go above 160 per inch thread count. Between the abrasive Herman Miller chairs and the drunken nights out, they don't last.</li>
<li>And it goes without saying; buy as many suits as you can reasonably afford.</li>
<li>But don’t waste your money buying off-the-rack at Barney’s or Bergdorf; go bespoke. </li>
</ul>
#1: Gucci suits are like Corvettes. They're a great way of telling people you didn't always have money.
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">It’s a cliché because it’s true; the most expensive suit is the one you wear the least.</li>
</ul>
#1: I spent $2,000 on a suit I don't need or like, just to impress a sales chick I don't find attractive.
Business Casual
<ul>
<li>If you're not in the US, lose the khakis.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Sweaters over a collared shirt? For the most part, no problem. </li>
</ul>
 #1: Why do people wear wool if they know cashmere exists?
 #1: There is no such thing as turtleneck weather.
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
Stick with Polo shirts; no one cares to watch you inevitably mime golf swings.
</li>
</ul>
#1: Nothing says douchebag quite like wearing an Augusta golf shirt when the Masters are on.
Watches
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">I saw an Associate get picked off for sporting a new Daytona the week before bonus. A quick "if you want watches to matter, go work at Morgan Stanley" wiped that smirk right off his face.</li>
</ul>
#1: Wearing a Rolex is like driving an Audi. It says you've got some money, but nothing to say.

Thanks to Hank Paulson, Nike running watches and Livestrong bracelets were to 2004 what Lloyd's stubble beard has been to 2012-13. There are quite a few senior guys that still wear a Nike sport watch, intentionally, or even no watch at all.

#1: Not wearing a watch is the new Patek.

Forget all about Hublot. It’s a great way to tell people that you’re an idiot who has more money than taste. Hublot was a second-rate brand with third-rate craftsmanship until about 15 years ago when they arbitrarily doubled the price and started paying celebrities and sport figures to wear them. It's been a marketers wet dream.

Miscellaneous Tips
<ul>
<li>Pocket squares are for washed-up, unemployable ex-bankers, turned CNBC guest pundits, i.e. a guy who takes himself far too seriously and has a massive chip on his shoulder.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Wedding rings, watches, and cufflinks are the only acceptable form of jewelry for a man. Unless the Dalai Lama gave you that bracelet, leave it at home.</li>
</ul>
#1: In New York, don't trust a banker with a pocket square. In London, it's a pinky ring. And in Asia, don't f--king trust anyone.

Like Ambien and red wine, the wrong fashion combination can become a disastrously lethal cocktail of Larry Kudlow-esque proportions.

MD #1: A double-breasted suit and a blue shirt with a white collar? Was it a rough night in the water bed?
#1: Plaid shirt, bow tie, and pocket square is the douchebag trifecta.

Finally, "an architect is only as good as his builder, and a fashion designer is only as good as your tailor."

There you have it; head to toe. These tips won’t exactly get you laid at Soho House or on the cover of GQ; but on Wall Street and in business, you can’t go wrong taking this advice.
Just don’t go out and break the law or get scapegoated… Ask any juror, Fabrice Tourre’s ‘fabulous’(?) and expensive-looking fashion sense was a coffin nail come deliberation time.
