<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=prime+minister+narendra+modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a>, who is on a two-day <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UAE">UAE visit</a>, today invited business leaders in the UAE to invest in India, saying India has an immediate <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=investment+in+India">investment opportunity</a> of $1 trillion.<br />

Modi, who is the first PM to visit the UAE in last 34 years, said his government will address all concerns of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=business+leaders">business leaders</a> and eliminate the deficit of 34 years.<br />
 <br />
The prime minister said that he was well aware of the fact that $1 trillion was a big number and added such investments can very well come to India as it has now got a decisive and stable government.<br />
 <br />
While addressing business leaders from the UAE at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Masdar+City">Masdar City</a>, Modi took a dig at the previous Congress-led government, saying his government has some problems in legacy and his immediate priority would be to kickstart the things which were stalled by the "indecisiveness and lethargy" of the past governments.<br />

"I have got some problems in legacy. I cannot take only the good points and leave aside the problems... Some things were stalled due to the indecisiveness and lethargy of the governments (in the last)... It is my priority to kickstart those things," Modi said.<br />

Modi made a huge pitch to business leaders and said India has huge investment opportunities for investors from the UAE in sectors like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=infrastructure">infrastructure</a>, energy and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=real+estate">real estate</a> and urged them to come to invest in India and together make the 21st century '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Asia+century">Asia's Century</a>'.<br />

"On one hand India is growing fast and on the other hand, the world is looking at Asia. But is Asia complete without UAE? I can clearly see that the UAE should be at the centre of mainstream of things in Asia. UAE's power and India's potential can make it Asia's century," he said in the planned city of Abu Dhabi.<br />
 <br />
Modi said there are 700 flights between India and UAE, but it took 34 years for an Indian Prime Minister to visit.<br />
 <br />
"I promise this will not happen again," he said.<br />
 <br />
During their meeting, investors told Modi that they needed steps like single window clearance and cited cumbersome and complex processes for doing business in India. To this, Modi assured that these problems will be resolved.<br />
 <br />
To this, the prime minister assured them of solving those problems.<br />
 <br />
"I will send my Commerce Minister to try and find solutions to the problems faced by some UAE investors," said Modi.<br />
 <br />
Reportedly, the issue assumes significance as a number of investors, including some from the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=middle+east">Middle-East region</a>, have in the past faced problems due to taxation and policy related issues.<br />
 <br />
"I feel India is a land of many opportunities... 125 crore people of India are not a market but they are a source of great strength. In the agriculture sector we need cold storage network and warehousing network where UAE businesses have another advantage. Infrastructure development and real estate offer tremendous opportunities for UAE businesses in India. UAE's power and India's potential can make the dream of an Asian Century a reality,” said Modi.<br />

Heads of companies like Etisalat, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=etihad">Etihad Airways</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=emirates">Emirates</a>, DP World, Commercial Bank of Dubai and Emaar Group were also present during the meeting.<br />
 <br /> Earlier in the day, Modi was accompanied on an hour-long visit of <keyword id="446709" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Masdar-City">Masdar City</keyword>, by senior City officials, who briefed him on various aspects of the project.<br />

Modi also travelled briefly on the PRT (Personnel Rapid Transit) car - a driver-less vehicle which runs from point to point on magnetic strips.<br />

During his tour, Modi was greeted by residents and professionals in the Masdar City, which include a large number of members from the Indian community.<br />

He also singed a digital visitor’s book in which he wrote "Vigyan Jeevan Hai".<br />

Modi tells super rich Sheikhs of UAE to invest in India like never before!

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.etiennemalapert.com/">Etienne Malapert</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Twenty miles outside of Abu Dhabi, what was once a barren patch of desert is now on its way to becoming the world's most sustainable eco-city. </p><p>The <a href="http://www.masdar.ae/en/masdar-city">Masdar Project</a> is the United Arab Emirates' planned city of the future, complete with state-of-the-art technology and energy-efficient transportation systems. </p><p>In a country built on oil, a car-free, solar-powered community is certainly an anomaly. </p><p>French photographer <a href="http://www.etiennemalapert.com/">Etienne Malapert</a> was enthralled by the idea of a green city in a land of black gold.</p><p>In his final year at the Art School of Lausanne in Switzerland, he documented the strange environment of Masdar City. What he found was an incomplete and alien site, an otherworldly land left sparse by the 2008 economic meltdown.</p><p>Malapert has shared his stunning series, "City of Possibilities," with Business Insider. </p><p> </p>

Take a tour of the 'city of the future' being built in a Middle Eastern desert

<p>We first heard about Masdar City <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/1hwaxj/masdar_city_is_a_city_of_the_future_that_is_being/">over at the Futurology page on Reddit.</a></p>
<p>The <keyword id="6369764" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eco-friendly">eco-friendly</keyword> city, which began development in 2006, will cost between $18 and $19 billion, with a projected finish by 2025.</p>
<p>Funded by the government-subsidiary <span>Mubadala Development Company, Masdar City will play host to the <span>International Renewable Energy Agency headquarters, while also seeking to become a hub for other cleantech companies.</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>Spanning 2.3 square miles, approximately 1,500 businesses will operate in Masdar, supporting an anticipated 40,000 residents and 50,000 commuters.</span></span></p>
<p><span>The city won't feature any skyscrapers or allow any cars, instead featuring its own <a href="http://renewableenergyfacts.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Personal-Rapid-Transit-System-at-Masdar-City.jpg">futuristic "Personal Rapid Transit System"</a> and mass transit options.</span></p>
<p>Masdar will house the largest solar farm in the Middle East in addition to wind farms on the city's outskirts, providing a total of 150 megawatts of energy to power the sustainable city.</p>
<p>A solar-powered distillation plant is planned to decrease Masdar's water needs, and about 80% of the city's water is planned to be recycled.</p>

They're Building A Carbon-Neutral City In The Middle Of The Desert

<br /> <keyword id="3711125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pod-taxis">Pod taxis</keyword>, a result of a project called the Metrino-a PRT system in which pods are suspended from an overhead rail -has been under consideration for a while and will finally debut in <keyword id="6361586" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gurgaon">Gurgaon</keyword><br />
<br /> The <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> has laid the groundwork to roll out India's first personal rapid transit (PRT) network and will invite global bids for the project within the next fortnight. The pilot project will span a 13km stretch from the Gurgaon-Delhi border to Badshapur Mod on Sohna Road and is estimated to cost Rs 850 crore. <br />

Every pod can take up to five passengers. For the pilot project route, 16 stations have been planned, starting near Ambience Mall. A personal rapid transit (PRT) network is made up of small automated vehicles running at close intervals on a guideway with docking stations for passengers to get on and get off.While a pod can accommodate up to five people, there there is also an option to hire an entire pod that will take a passenger straight to the destination, skipping the scheduled stops. The average speed of the pods is 60kmph. <br />
<br />
A senior NHAI official said the network would be built within a year of the contract being awarded. "Pod taxi systems are best suited for this. We are keeping our options open, though, so that private players can come up with best system, including skyrail," the official said. A skyrail is also a PRT system, but is more similar to a ropeway . <br />
<br />
The NHAI official said land required for the project is already available with it and Haryana government agencies. The project does not need forest and environmental clearance. As for financing, the entire investment will be made by the private company that sets up the PRT. Under the terms of the agreement, the company will recover its investment in 25 years through tickets. <br />
<br /> Union road transport and highways minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> had announced last year that Metrinos will run between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Manesar. The overhead network for Metrinos has been planned along the expressway . Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had travelled in a pod in Masdar City during his last visit to the United Arab Emirates. <br />
<br />
The Punjab and Haryana governments had, in the past, announced a rollout of pod taxis in Amritsar and Gurgaon, but these never came to fruition. <br />
<br /> According to estimates prepared by the NHAI, while while building a kilometre of Metro costs at least Rs 250 crore and of monorail Rs 200 crore, the <keyword id="6714406" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Metrino">Metrino</keyword> system can be built with just Rs 70 crore. It's lighter as well. <br />
<br />
"The NHAI will roll out the project soon. We have set a target of a year. Subsequently , we could extend this to Dhaula Kuan and Manesar on each side," said the NHAI official. <br />

Say goodbye to traffic: Pod Taxis to debut in Gurgaon

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foster + Partners</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>If and when astronauts finally set foot on Mars, potentially <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/content/nasas-journey-to-mars">sometime in the 2030s</a>, they'll be greeted by a dust-covered habitat.</p><p>The folks at Foster + Partners want to design it.</p><p>The British firm was recently shortlisted among 30 finalists for the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/centennial_challenges/3DPHab/index.html">3D Printed Habitat Challenge</a>, organized by America Makes and NASA. Designers and architects were called upon to imagine an environment that could sustain human life on the red planet, despite its harsh and unforgiving climate.</p><p>Though Foster + Partners <span>- the design firm behind everything from Masdar City to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Campus#Apple_Campus_2">Apple's under-construction campus</a></span> <span>- </span>didn't make it to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/centennial_challenges/3DPHab/index.html">the final round</a>, the firm's design got our attention for its commitment to detail.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Foster + Partners</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Foster + Partners' plan hinges on its Regolith Additive Construction (RAC) process. </p><p>Regolith is the loose, rocky layer that sits above solid bedrock. The task for Foster + Partners was working with that regolith to create a safe living environment.</p><p>Xavier de Kestelier, a designer on the project, says the foremost concern was getting the habitat set up without human aid. "In a normal project, you don't really start with that," he tells Tech Insider.</p><p>To build on Mars, Kestelier and his team decided to go with three rovers each performing a different task.</p><p>The largest that will parachute down are the "Diggers." They move the Martian terrain to form 1.5-meter-deep craters where the habitat will sit.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foster + Partners</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The medium-sized "Transporters" then push that displaced rocky material over the top of the deflated habitat.</p><p>The resultant coating will form a protective barrier from the intense solar radiation and high temperatures on Mars.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foster + Partners</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Finally, small "Melters" will use microwaves to permanently fuse the loose Martian soil to the habitat. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foster + Partners</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"In that way, we can keep the cost down by having each type of robot doing one specific task," Kestelier says. "So it's not like a system you'd find with the Curiosity rover, which does many, many things."</p><p>The 1,000-square-foot habitat itself was born out of careful consideration of human psychology and physiology.</p><p>Instead of walking normally around the habitat, astronauts will move around in one-third Earth's gravity. Ceilings in the habitat are especially high for that reason, Kestelier says.</p><p>Size was a consideration for living quarters as well. They were designed to be small, so that astronauts would be forced to socialize with one another.</p><p>"These astronauts are depending on each other, and any communication with Earth takes roughly 20 minutes," Kestelier says. "You want that team to be a really coherent team."</p><p>Along with collaborating with climate scientists and explorers, Kestelier says the design team had another source of inspiration to marry beautiful design with rigorous science: Andy Weir's novel and soon-to-be feature film "The Martian."</p><p>"That's how we started the project," he laughs. The architecture firm behind Apple's new campus has released designs for a Mars settlement

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Middle East has a long-established reputation for extremism, human rights abuses and underperforming economies.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The region's leaders tend to point the finger of responsibility for these failings at </span><a href="http://www.themedialine.org/uncategorised/turkish-film-mastermind-purpors-to-reveal-jewish-conspiracy/">external actors</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There are, nevertheless, a few who seek solutions to the region's problems internally. These leaders turn to building "knowledge economies" as a panacea for the Middle East's chronic problems.</span></p><p dir="ltr">A "knowledge economy" refers to the contemporary post-agricultural, post-industrial global marketplace. Like the related term "information society," it denotes an economy in which an individual's professional worth is not gauged by what he or she can make or draw from the ground, but by what that individual knows.</p><p dir="ltr">Some seventy percent of the developed world's jobs are now information-based, and in today's globalized age, applicants for them are competing not just with residents of their same village, city or country, but with the entire world.</p><p dir="ltr">Middle Eastern countries have struggled to adapt to this new reality. Many of their economies are still based on small agriculture and industry, women's rights are still widely <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/pomegranate/2013/11/arab-womens-rights">circumscribed</a>, and their national education systems have been slow to introduce critical thinking and an appreciation of knowledge for its own sake.</p><p dir="ltr">The average Arab citizen reads just <a href="http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2012/07/14/226290.html">six book pages</a> a year, for example, and the entire Arab world translates fewer books annually than Spain. Likewise, the Arab world has remained woefully behind in <a href="http://techreviewpanarab.com/en/computing/science-research-arab-world/">scientific</a> and high-tech innovation, lagging the rest of the world in <a href="http://www.mei.edu/content/article/don't-be-fooled-appearances-liberal-values-are-spreading-arab-world">internet penetration</a> and startup creation. Government investment in research and development remains far <a href="http://techreviewpanarab.com/en/computing/science-research-arab-world/">below</a> the world average.</p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To address this discrepancy, certain Middle Eastern leaders have turned to "</span><a href="http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/images/publications/Gulf_Innovation_WEB.pdf">innovation clusters</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" intended to concentrate local and <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> entrepreneurs and offer the resources to incubate their ideas. </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Abu Dhabi's Masdar City, Dubai's TechnoPark, Doha's Science and Technology Park and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia represent prominent examples of that effort.</span></p><p dir="ltr">It's a commendable idea, but one whose success will remain limited without first investing in something the Middle East sorely lacks: soft infrastructure.</p><p dir="ltr">Soft infrastructure refers to those institutions required to maintain the economic, health, cultural and social standards of a country - everything from its financial system, governance and schools to police, library and park services.</p><p dir="ltr">Creating soft infrastructure remains the most important obstacle towards building sustainable knowledge economies in the region. <a href="http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/images/publications/Gulf_Innovation_WEB.pdf">The building blocks</a> of the knowledge economy - creativity, freedom of expression, social inclusion, and interaction with global cultures - are much more difficult to realize than the bricks and mortar of hard infrastructure. It is, therefore, an empty dream to expect sustainable results from investment in the knowledge economy while maintaining the authoritarian and patriarchal status quo.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p dir="ltr"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One key to strengthening soft infrastructure is building cultures that embrace risk taking. This necessitates cultural transformation in a region where failure is perceived as warranting punishment. Unless Middle Eastern societies learn to see failure as a key to learning, innovation and entrepreneurship, it will be impossible for individuals who fear failure in the short term to transform into successful entrepreneurs in the long run.</span></span></p><p dir="ltr">Residents of the Middle East, like most people in the world, want what comes with the knowledge economy. Their leaders, however, rarely wish to see the drastic social transformations that accompany it.</p><p dir="ltr">Knowledge economies give rise to heated policy debates around good governance, accountability, multiculturalism, gender equality, and worker's rights among other topics. It is, therefore, impossible to seek a knowledge economy but reject the fundamental rights and freedoms that accompany it.</p><p dir="ltr">As those leaders seek to replicate the success of the West, they need to understand that Western prosperity relies just as much on the soft infrastructure of pluralism, rule of law, and rights and freedoms as it does on the hard infrastructure of cement, steel, and asphalt.
