<ul class="summary-list"><li>After six years of flying, Cherry Tan left her dream job as a flight attendant.</li><li>She decided to open a hawker stall with her husband in Singapore.</li></ul>As a teenager, Cherry Tan knew she wanted to become a flight attendant.She mapped out a plan to fulfill that dream. At 19, she applied for a cabin crew position at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toured-singapores-flight-attendant-training-center-looked-physically-demanding-2023-3">Singapore Airlines</a>. When she was rejected failed, she temporarily switched gears to pursue a bachelor's degree in hospitality business at the Singapore Institute of Technology. But the dream of becoming a flight attendant never went away, and she continued to apply after graduation.After four years of rejections, at 23 and on her 10th attempt, she got the job.Tan spent the next six years flying around the world and exploring new countries every other day."Being a cabin crew member was the best time of my life," Tan, now 29, told me, adding that she enjoyed the work-life balance it afforded.<div type="image" title="A flight attendant stands in front of a Singapore Airlines plane." height="1600" width="1200" msid="113208984" hostid="261" sizebytes="108054"></div>But toward the end of her fifth year, Tan was hungry for a change in her life. Flying began to feel mundane, and she was uncertain about the job stability and career progression of being a flight attendant, she said.At the same time, her husband, Duncan Hsu, now 36, had been working as a chef in a hotel and wanted to start his own business. Tan saw this as an opportunity for them to open a hawker stall together in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-hawker-center-food-michelin-photos-tips-cost-2021-3">kopitiam</a> — an open-air coffee shop selling a variety of dishes at an affordable price in Singapore.So in May, the couple invested 30,000 Singapore dollars, or around $23,000, of their own money to open a stall in the west of Singapore.They named the stall Kiang Kiang Taiwan Teppanyaki and planned a menu inspired by a style of Japanese cooking that was introduced to Taiwan in the 1970s — "teppan" means "iron plate," and "yaki" means "grilled." Diners choose between steak, chicken, pork, or halibut, and then add either rice or noodles and additional sides.As the dishes were inspired by her husband's Taiwanese heritage, the meat is served with Taiwanese-style black pepper or mushroom sauce.<h2 id="73ed91fb-62c4-486c-965f-82f3d03854bb">Trading a comfortable job for longer hours and lower pay</h2>As a flight attendant at Singapore Airlines, Tan said she made around SG$6,000, or $4,600 a month, depending on the number of flights she embarked on. When she left her job to become a hawker, Tan estimated that she took a 50% pay cut.But Tan simply saw her pay cut as part of the process. "This is not our end goal," she said, adding that they plan to expand the business in the future. "So I just had to bite the bullet."And despite earning less, her bank account still grew because of her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-hawker-stall-nasi-lemak-best-food-changi-photos-review-2022-4">long hours as a hawker</a>. As a flight attendant, Tan got around a day off after working for two or three days a week. She also spent more on food and shopping while traveling to different countries, she said.Now, Tan works 12 hours a day, six days a week. "Even until today, they asked me why I had to give up a comfortable job," she said.<h2 id="c31013cd-cce7-457a-987b-1706cffbf53a">No easy business to break into</h2>The hawker business is challenging to succeed in. Although startup costs may be lower than those of other food and business enterprises, it is physically demanding and can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hawker-chan-michelin-star-bib-gourmand-hawker-restaurant-singapore-2023-7">yield narrow profits</a>."There's no guarantee you will succeed. People have failed. That's the reality. If you don't do your homework well, you don't study your menu, you will fall very fast," KF Seetoh, a food critic and the founder of Urban Hawker in New York City <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michelin-star-singapore-restaurant-hawker-stall-chef-nasi-lemak-food-2024-3">previously told BI</a>. Urban Hawker is the first street food center in the US that features Singaporean hawker cuisine.Despite the risks involved, Tan was confident in her decision. "I was not really concerned about whether the business would succeed because I have a lot of faith in my husband," Tan said. She met Hsu in 2014 on an internship in Taiwan. The pair got married in 2019.<div type="image" title="A couple poses in front of their stall" height="2754" width="3118" msid="113208978" hostid="261" sizebytes="351014"></div>When they first started out, business was slow. They sold around 50 sets — which range between SG$ 8.50 to SG$ 13.50 a piece — each day. They had monthly expenditures to consider, too: Tan estimates that the cost of operating the stall is around SG$21,000 monthly, including rent, which costs around SG$5,500.But business started to look up when Tan's videos about her hawker life gained traction on TikTok. Local media also began to cover the business. The fact that the stall owner had worked at Singapore Airlines added a layer of curiosity and drew interest, she said.On a visit to their food stall on a Friday afternoon in August, I spotted a few customers finishing their final bites of the hot plate dish. It was almost the end of the lunch hour, and the side option of bean sprouts was sold out.While Hsu cooks the final delivery orders in the kitchen, Tan never pauses for a break. I mean, you don't really get that in hawker stalls because people usually just order their food and go," she said.<h2 id="f1fa0e0d-b920-4ba4-8ed1-a0dac6943221">The perks of being a hawker</h2>When Tan was a flight attendant, she simply had to report for work, follow instructions, and get paid a regular salary at the end of each month.But now, Tan gets to be her own boss. While Hsu oversees cooking, Tan handles the cashier, administrative work, accounting, and marketing.Although Tan doesn't see herself returning to the life of flying, one thing she does miss is the food."I'm not talking about the airplane food," she said. "I mean the food overseas. According to the National Environment Agency's website, the median age of hawkers is 60 — despite the retirement age in Singapore being 63.As Tan said, "You'll need a new generation to help the hawker culture."As the buzz from lunch hour began to wind down, Tan started to prepare ingredients for the dinner crowd."The hawker lifestyle is challenging, but I think if more youngsters are willing to go through this process, it's rewarding," she said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Injured passengers of the turbulence-hit Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 have been offered compensation.</li><li>The airline announced on Facebook that it's offering more than $10,000 to passengers with minor injuries.</li></ul>Singapore Airlines has offered injured passengers upwards of $10,000 in compensation after their flight hit severe turbulence and plunged 178 feet in under five seconds.In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid02oNEW6fAeqHD72YGJgGqDoG3ZCmJVNVW7RksyeRHYq9pcts96rCTRq4CbdkQ1NGm9l">Facebook post</a> on Tuesday, the carrier said that those who had sustained minor injuries on Flight SQ321 from London's Heathrow Airport to Singapore's Changi Airport were entitled to compensation.It added that passengers with more serious injuries requiring long-term medical care would receive larger offers."Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of US$25,000 to address their immediate needs," the carrier wrote in the Facebook post.The airline also offered a full airfare refund to all passengers on the flight, even those who were completely uninjured.The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it was thrust rapidly up and down for 62 seconds some 10 hours into the flight, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mot.gov.sg/news/details/transport-safety-investigation-bureau-preliminary-investigation-findings-of-incident-involving-sq321">Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau</a>.The plane was then forced to divert to Bangkok.The turbulence on board SQ321 <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pictures-show-chaotic-aftermath-singapore-flight-debris-blood-on-ceiling-2024-5">was so bad</a> that it also <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-singapore-airlines-could-owe-turbulence-death-injuries-2024-5">injured over 100 other people</a> — making it one of the <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/serious-injuries-due-to-turbulence-are-extremely-rare-2024-5">worst turbulence incidents</a> in recent history.One passenger, Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British national with a pre-existing heart condition, died of a suspected heart attack.On June 4, the airline wrote in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid02ouMkCRGRRBrkS6ydcnva3fNPbyh5rG93mE8qCgitEdXjv5BjG3GV77xCStQoEatnl">Facebook post</a> that 20 passengers were still receiving medical care in the hospitals in Bangkok. A Singapore Airlines spokesperson told BI that as of 1 p.m. Singapore time on June 11, 11 passengers from the flight were still in Thai hospitals. Ade Tan and Amos Chan, a Singaporean couple on board the flight, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honeymooning-couple-endured-60-seconds-of-hell-aboard-sq321-flight-2024-5">described the chaos and horror on board</a> when the plane plummeted."I must have been thrown off because when I next opened my eyes, I was actually on the aisle," Chan, 28, told BI's Kwan Wei Kevin Tan. "I had slammed into another passenger two rows behind us.""There were a lot of oxygen masks dropped from above where people had crashed into the ceilings. Many were injured, people had blood on their heads, and some were lying in the aisle as well," Tan, also 28, added.

Singapore Airlines has offered $10,000 to passengers who got hurt when their flight hit severe turbulence

Last week, the <keyword id="6356662" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="singapore" source="Orion">Singapore</keyword> Tourism Board (STB) announced visitor numbers to the city-state which topped expectations with over 2.9 million arrivals in the first three months of this year. This is 62 per cent of 2019's first quarter figure of the 4.7 million people who visited Singapore in the first quarter of 2019. A total of 193,230 of these came from India which is about 3.5 times more than the 54,530 who arrived in 2022. Indian residents are the fourth largest source of tourist arrivals in the first quarter after Indonesians (523,300), Malaysian (278,910) and Australians (265,730). Americans made up the fifth largest group of visitors by country of origin at 168,960. China which was the largest source of tourists for Singapore with over 3.75 million visitors in 2019 have yet to fully return to Singapore and made up the ninth largest group of tourists in Q1 with only 124,560 coming to Singapore. In 2019, based on figures from China's National Bureau of Statistics, Chinese tourists made nearly 170 million trips abroad. Although China has lifted travel restrictions, cumbersome travel processes targeted at Chinese residents by countries like South Korea and Japan earlier this year dampened the enthusiasm for outboard travel. This has been exacerbated by delays in passport renewals and visa applications as well as the inability of Chinese airlines to mount the same number of flights as before COVID. Based on data from Alibaba-owned travel booking site Fliggy, during February, international flights out of China are at less than 10 per cent of 2019 levels. Furthermore, the travel habits of Chinese citizens have been changed by three years of COVID-19 restrictions with many now contented to explore the vast and varied attractions in their own country. "The Chinese tourists we will welcome this year and in the coming years are very different from those who came before," Wolfgang Georg Arlt, founder and chief executive of COTRI (Chinese Outbound Tourism Research Institute), was quoted by CBNC as saying at ITB Berlin, the world's largest tourism trade fair. COTRI is an independent consulting company based in Germany. In China as elsewhere, years of pandemic-induced lockdowns sparked a shift away from major tourist attractions toward "more nature-orientated, more outdoor-orientated tourism," Arlt said. He highlighted the emergence of trends like camping and glamping, as well as family-focused trips. COTRI predicts that Chinese outbound travel will recover to around two-thirds of 2019's figures, with around 110 million overseas trips this year. In the meantime, the Singapore Tourism Board is not waiting for Chinese tourists' return to launch new activities and attractions to boost tourism on the island. To inspire travel to Singapore through TV series and films, STB together with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced the launch of an SGD 10 million (USD 7.5 million) Singapore On-screen Fund. The fund aims to support international media and entertainment (M&amp;E) partners in marketing Singapore through television and film shows aimed at an international audience. The Singapore On-screen Fund will support selected projects by key M&amp;E companies, which must be set in Singapore and launched before the first quarter of 2027. Successful projects will receive funding support of up to 30 per cent of qualifying costs related to featuring Singapore, including production and marketing costs. This is in part inspired by past collaborations which resulted in movies such as "Crazy Rich Asians", the popular K-drama "Little Women (2022) and the HBO sci-fi hit series "Westworld Season 3" (2020). These shows created an international impact and left a positive impression on audiences around the world. Also just announced in April is the return of the Free Singapore Tour which is very popular with Indian tourists as well as those from Australia and Indonesia. The tour was suspended during COVID. This tour is organised by STB together with Changi Airport and is meant for transit passengers at Changi who have a layover period of at least five and a half hours but less than 24 hours. They must also have valid entry visas for Singapore to take part in the tours. The objective of organising these free tours is to entice transit passengers to make Singapore a destination for their next holiday. The original three tours available before COVID - the City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour - have been refreshed to include new points of interest. A brand-new Changi Precinct tour will introduce travellers to the interesting sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding Singapore Changi Airport. Each tour lasts two and a half hours and will be available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine tours a day. In 2019, over 80,000 passengers went on the Free Singapore Tour. Another exciting development is the stationing of a brand-new Disney Cruise Line ship in Singapore from 2025 for five years. A memorandum of understanding between STB and Disney Cruise Line was announced on March 29. The 208,000 gross-ton ship which will have a passenger capacity of about 6,000 plus a crew strength of 2,300 will be taking passengers for cruises around Southeast Asian countries, home to more than 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Disney Cruise Line ship has the potential to add millions of local and foreign cruise passengers during the five-year period, including fly-cruise passengers who arrive in Singapore by air. It is also expected to bring about significant spillover benefits for the wider economy. "We look forward to welcoming the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Singapore in 2025," said Keith Tan, Chief Executive of STB. "This is an important milestone for STB and reflects Disney Cruise Line's strong confidence in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The new Disney cruise ship will be an attraction itself and is expected to boost the tourism sector in Singapore for many years to come."

	According to the official statement issued by TCS, SIA is the launch customer for its CrewCollab Solution application, which its cabin crew is now using it on board. During flight, the application enables crew to view information which traditionally has been in paper format, such as customer service lists, flight information and crew lists, digitally via tablets.
 

	Additionally, cabin crew of SIA will also be able to create digital voyage reports for each flight. Besides, it can also enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of follow-up items across the many functional areas of the airline.
 

	TCS further revealed that using the application, SIA crew will also be able to access digital versions of key documents like safety manuals, service procedures manuals, catering information, crew memos or alerts and crew-to-crew handover notes.
 

	“We are very pleased to collaborate with our long-standing partner Tata Consultancy Services to develop TCS CrewCollab Solution. On several fronts, flying is getting worse.<h2>Turbulence is getting worse</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turbulence-more-frequent-stronger-expert-aviation-explains-why-2024-7">Increasing turbulence</a> was aviation professionals' top climate-related safety concern in a 2020<a target="_blank" href="https://library.wmo.int/records/item/57199-outcomes-of-the-2020-survey-on-the-impacts-of-climate-change-and-variability-on-aviation"> survey</a> of more than 400 pilots, flight crew members, air traffic controllers, and other flight professionals worldwide by the World Meteorological Organization. She tried to help Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British passenger who ultimately died.A Bangkok hospital official later said in a news conference that over 100 of the 211 passengers sustained injuries. Tan said that she suffered a cervical spine fracture and spent a week in the hospital.<div type="image" title="man in hospital scrubs with head bandaging in a wheelchair with medical professionals standing around him in a hospital lobby" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550817" hostid="261" sizebytes="175222"></div>Singapore Airlines did not respond to a request for comment, but the company previously <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/singapore-airlines-sends-offers-of-compensation-to-sq321-passengerssingapore-air/867151658789515/">posted</a> on Facebook apologizing for the "traumatic experience" and saying it had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-offers-compensation-victims-injured-turbulence-hit-sq321-2024-6">offered $10,000 or upward of $25,000 in compensation</a> to injured passengers, depending on their injury.<h2>The skies could be even bumpier in the future</h2>The North Atlantic, where planes fly between North America and Europe, had 55% more severe clear-air turbulence in 2020 than in 1979, Williams found.By the 2060s, he <a target="_blank" href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2017GL074618">predicts</a> twice as much turbulence, or even three times as much.While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.faa.gov/travelers/fly_safe/turbulence">FAA data</a> doesn't show a rise in turbulence-related injuries — there are usually less than 20 a year on US airlines flying worldwide — Williams said the data may be misleading. It only counts serious injuries that require a person to be hospitalized for over 48 hours or have hemorrhaging, broken bones, or second or third-degree burns.<div type="image" title="six ambulances lined up in a parking lot beneath and air traffic control tower at night" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550815" hostid="261" sizebytes="276356"></div>Even if nobody gets hurt, more turbulence can cause more wear and tear on aircraft."Even light turbulence is flexing the wings up and down and stressing the airframe," Williams said, adding, "That limits the life of the aircraft."More turbulence doesn't have to mean bumpier flights. Planes have more flexible wings than they used to, which reduces inflight jostling, and forecasting to help pilots avoid turbulence is improving.New onboard <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-civilizations-that-were-hiding-in-plain-sight-2023-1">lidar technology</a> can also use a laser to reveal clear-air turbulence ahead. For now, it's large and expensive, but Williams hopes one day it'll be small and cheap enough for all passenger planes. It's unclear if that technology will catch up with turbulence from climate change.<h2>Worse weather brings more delays</h2>Some parts of our flying future aren't necessarily dangerous or scary. They're just frustrating — like delays, which will likely worsen in our warming world.Bad weather causes about 75% of air traffic delays in the US, according to the FAA, and mounting research indicates climate change is driving more severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires, and hail in some places. In fact, heat alone could ground 23 times more passengers by 2050 — up to 185,000 people a year — a 2020 McKinsey <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/mckinsey/business%20functions/sustainability/our%20insights/will%20infrastructure%20bend%20or%20break%20under%20climate%20stress/will-infrastructure-bend-or-break-under-climate-stress-case-study-old.pdf">report</a> projected.<div type="image" title="plane silhouette rising in an orange sky beside a large bright sun" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550813" hostid="261" sizebytes="42478"></div>In some cases, extreme heat can melt runways, like it did <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/18/uk-transport-operators-say-worst-heatwave-problems-yet-to-come">at a UK airport</a> in 2022. A more common issue, though, is that extreme heat changes the calculus of takeoff. Planes must be lighter or have a longer runway to get enough lift in extremely hot air, which means that on especially hot days, airlines may have to ditch some cargo and, therefore, some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://aviationweek.com/business-aviation/airports-fbos-suppliers/rising-temperatures-aircraft-payload-range-affects&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1723680874028451&amp;usg=AOvVaw3MPUhWiESTacjTr67H9iJV">revenue</a>.Then, there are cases like the Canadian wildfires in June 2023, which reduced visibility in the Northeast US so much that it delayed hundreds of flights.<div type="image" title="airplane nose emerges on smoky dark low visibility airport runway" height="1500" width="2249" msid="112550810" hostid="261" sizebytes="26472"></div>Changing weather patterns are already increasing flight delays in Europe, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iata.org/en/iata-repository/publications/economic-reports/weather-related-operational-disruptions-are-rising/">according</a> to the International Air Transport Association. The memo warns that these weather delays have "a cost impact" for airlines and travelers alike.Even if bad weather doesn't cause delays, it can cost money. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-airlines-are-struggling-despite-record-travel-demand-profits-revenue-2024-6">Airlines are already struggling to turn profits</a>. The climate crisis won't help. Think of the astronomical air conditioning required to cool an airport and the planes at its gates on a hot day.In its June global <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iata.org/en/iata-repository/publications/economic-reports/global-outlook-for-air-transport-june-2024-report/">outlook</a>, IATA wasn't shy about the issue: "The industry's profitability is still fragile, leaving meager buffers with which to absorb the rising costs of climate change and decarbonization."Airports are likely to pass their costs on to airlines by increasing their landing fees, "which then get passed on to passengers however airlines can do it," Robert W. Mann, an airline industry consultant and former airline executive, told BI.<h2>Buckle up and expect delays</h2>This all means that you should brace for flying to become more annoying and possibly even scary at times."Passengers will need to pack patience when they board aircraft" and heed instructions about wearing seatbelts, Veronica Cote, an associate professor of aviation science at Bridgewater State University and a former pilot, told BI in an email.Despite the complexity of aviation and the ever-changing atmosphere, Cote added, airlines still run "tens of thousands of operations daily safely."Even before the incident in Athens, Zeiher felt anxious while flying. She doesn't like the lack of control, and takeoffs scare her. She's even experienced extreme turbulence.Still, she's undeterred."I'll continue flying. I enjoy travel, so you have to," Zeiher said. Flying is about to become even more miserable

When Dave Pynt, the chef-owner of Australian-inspired barbecue restaurant Burnt Ends, visited her school for a guest lecture on wood-fire cooking, she was intrigued."I felt that if there's one skill that I want to learn, it's definitely cooking with wood fire," Ang told BI.She didn't apply anywhere else. "I knew I wanted it," she said. "So I went and got it."When she graduated later that year, she continued to work under Pynt. Burnt Ends is based in Singapore and has one Michelin star. In March, it was ranked No. 15 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list and No. 68 on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-restaurants-in-the-world-ranked-2024-6">global list</a>.She worked her way up from being an intern to managing the wood-fired oven.But after two years of working in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trying-ai-fine-dining-tasting-menu-venhue-new-york-2024-9">fine-dining</a> kitchen, Ang was ready to move on.<h2 id="b488ea2b-c0d6-46ce-a82b-4c27208729ae">Shifting the focus to local cuisine</h2><div type="image" title="A bowl of prawn noodles" height="3127" width="4691" msid="114200242" hostid="261" sizebytes="473800"></div>As a Singaporean, Ang has always taken pride in the country's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/street-food-in-singapore-2014-3">local food culture</a>. However, she felt that prawn noodles — a dish that can be served dry or with soup — was one that could be improved. She decided to develop and sell her own version based on the way she cooked it at home.She knew she had to start small. A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-michelin-list-ruined-hawker-culture-food-for-singapore-2023-6">hawker stall</a> seemed like the perfect sandbox to test her ideas without spending a lot on overhead costs.She partnered with a friend she had met at Burnt Ends to open a hawker stall in 2019. They invested 60,000 Singapore dollars, or around $47,000, into the venture. Ang did not share the name of her partner with Business Insider.It was a vast change from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michelin-star-singapore-restaurant-hawker-stall-chef-nasi-lemak-food-2024-3">restaurant scene to a hawker stall</a>. But despite the long hours, cramped working conditions, and slim profits, Ang said she always remembered something she was once told: If you can survive in Burnt Ends, you can survive anywhere."The training was very intense. You learn to understand heat and fire in the most primitive way," she said.<h2 id="b0d88806-4215-4007-9651-20ec15eb15a9">The challenges of running a hawker business</h2>Three years in, the hawker stall had just managed to earn back its capital."I needed to move out of hawker because there was a price ceiling," Ang said. In Singapore, the average price of noodle dishes in hawker centers ranges from around SG$3 to SG$5, data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.singstat.gov.sg/-/media/files/publications/economy/ssn124-pg11-15.ashx">Department of Statistics</a> in Singapore show.Amid rising ingredient prices, she was fighting expectations that local food should cost less than SG$6. "The store was too small to contain our ambition."<div type="image" title="Interior of Zhup Zhup" height="3139" width="4708" msid="114200248" hostid="261" sizebytes="388248"></div>So, in 2021, she expanded to a full-service open-air restaurant, first named One Prawn &amp; Co and later renamed Zhup Zhup.Leaving the hawker center allowed Ang to price dishes at a slightly higher price point.In addition to selling local fare like hokkien mee and pao fan, they serve prawn noodles for SG$14 a bowl and SG$20 for their Supreme Prawn Noodle, which is served with pork ribs, tobiko prawn balls, clams, and pork slices.Typically, prawn noodles have a clear, pork-based soup. Ang's noodle broth is prepared with almost 40 pounds of prawn heads and over 60 pounds of pork bones, then boiled for more than 20 hours. The dish is served in a clay pot."The broth is so umami," Darren Ang, a customer in his late 30s, told BI. What makes their prawn noodles stand out is the variety of ingredients, he said.In 2022, the casual eatery earned its first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-bak-kut-teh-hawker-food-michelin-guide-bib-gourmand-2023-9">Michelin Bib Gourmand</a>, a rating that recognizes establishments that serve quality food at lower price points.<h2 id="e8dc87de-ed07-47c0-a9ca-0e966643a4c1">Returning to the restaurant scene</h2>Early last year, Lo &amp; Behold Group, a hospitality group in Singapore, offered her team the opportunity to open a restaurant in the new mall.Each tenant at New Bahru is an independent local brand. A representative from Lo &amp; Behold Group declined to comment to BI on how Ang was selected.On returning to a restaurant kitchen after working in a casual setting for almost six years, Ang said the biggest difference was finally using chef terms like "emulsification" and "caramelization.""I can finally talk like that!" she said with a laugh.<div type="image" title="Chefs watch a chef's demonstration." height="3024" width="4535" msid="114200245" hostid="261" sizebytes="650834"></div>But most of all, Ang is excited to create new dishes. The restaurant serves modern Asian grilled seafood at night and prawn-broth ramen during the day, she said. As a callback to her Burnt Ends days, the seafood is grilled or baked using wood-fired methods.Ang credits her ability to develop recipes to the training she received from Pynt.Pynt told BI that Ang was a headstrong chef with great talent."She had very high standards that she was able to follow through with," he said. He had mixed emotions about seeing her go. With good people, you always want them to stay, he said."But on the flip side, you also want to see young chefs spread their wings," he said.<h2 id="260a6920-757c-465f-a99a-535453e7be26">Inspiring the next generation of hawkers</h2><div type="image" title="A woman stirs prawn broth" height="3264" width="4896" msid="114200244" hostid="261" sizebytes="568622"></div>Singapore's food and beverage industry is not easy to thrive in.Teo Kay Key, a research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, National University of Singapore, told BI that hawker food has traditionally been viewed as a cheap source of good and hearty meals priced for the masses.However, this can affect stall owners, who must balance rising operational costs with customer expectations to earn a living."Consumers might not even want to patronize if they do not think it is reasonably priced based on their own evaluations," she said.As a former young hawker who defied these expectations, Ang hopes for young entrepreneurs — especially hawkers, to follow her lead.And she's in good company: Cherry Tan, 29, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-attendant-singapore-airlines-quit-open-hawker-stall-2024-9">left her dream job as a flight attendant</a> at Singapore Airlines to set up a hawker business selling Taiwanese-style teppanyaki with her husband.As a hawker, she estimates that she took a 50% pay cut and had to work longer hours. Still, she feels that it was worth it. "The hawker lifestyle is challenging, but I think if more youngsters are willing to go through this process, it's rewarding," she told BI.Similarly, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michelin-star-singapore-restaurant-hawker-stall-chef-nasi-lemak-food-2024-3">Shanice Lim left the fine dining scene</a> at 25 to run a hawker stall. "The hawker culture is dying. I wanted to put my brand out there so everyone could have good nasi lemak," Lim told BI.Although she charges at least SG$5 for her dish, which can cost as little as SG$3 at other stalls, she has won over skeptical customers, Lim said.Ang agreed that young hawkers should not give up on their pursuit of quality and charge the appropriate prices."And feed yourself. You're not doing charity," she added. "There will always be people who appreciate the quality you want in your food."Her next goal is to "reach for the stars." In her case, the coveted Michelin stars."It will definitely be an honor to receive an award from Michelin," she said. "But we will continue putting out the best that we can."

Singaporeans are used to paying less than $5 for a meal. This 30-year-old chef charges double, and diners keep coming.

"I had slammed into another passenger two rows behind us."The Singaporean couple had spent the past month honeymooning in Italy and Iceland. On May 20, they boarded their flight home from London."We came back because Amos' grandfather was celebrating his 100th birthday. We were planning to continue our honeymoon after that, so we were coming back just for a day," Tan said.Tan and her husband were among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members aboard Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ321, which ran into severe turbulence en route to Changi Airport.<div type="image" title="The Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER airplane that was headed to Singapore from London." height="4128" width="6192" msid="110599374" hostid="261" sizebytes="1176258"></div>SQ321 had been flying for around 10 hours when it was hit by severe turbulence while traveling over the south of Myanmar on May 21, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mot.gov.sg/news/details/transport-safety-investigation-bureau-preliminary-investigation-findings-of-incident-involving-sq321">Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau</a>.The Boeing 777-300ER airplane was cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it was thrust up and down rapidly for 62 seconds. Officials said the turbulence was so severe that the plane <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-flight-turbulence-death-investigation-report-details-2024-5">dropped 178 feet in four seconds</a>. The plane was forced to divert to Bangkok because of the incident."There were a lot of oxygen masks dropped from above where people had crashed into the ceilings. One passenger, a 73-year-old British man named <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/ThornburyMusicalTheatreGroup/posts/pfbid034E1DicppqiZfZGdRXwroFQYqhaVwxx77S3Z7ipYUmihNfYG4QvwwXyRfyUnqggRrl">Geoffrey Kitchen</a>, died of a suspected heart attack. Kitchen had a pre-existing heart condition.Being trained medical doctors, Tan and Chan went around the cabin to tend to injured passengers."We could hear people calling out for medical help. I went more toward the front of the plane while Amos went to the back," Tan said.That was when she noticed Kitchen had collapsed. Besides Tan, two other doctors and a nurse were tending to him."I remember shouting to the rest of the cabin, asking if anyone else is CPR trained," she said, adding that two men came forward to help with CPR.Tan said the group spent about 20 to 30 minutes trying to resuscitate Kitchen, but their attempts weren't successful.<h2 id="01904088-ca8e-4293-a650-68e957a46e7a">Sustaining injuries themselves</h2>Tan told BI that she began to feel the pain in her neck worsen after the plane landed in Bangkok."I think when I first smashed up into the ceiling, the pain didn't register to me," Tan said.Back home in Singapore, both Tan and Chan underwent CT scans on their brain and neck."Amos' one was completely clean, but because he had blacked out, he needed to be admitted for monitoring," Tan said.Tan was later diagnosed with a cervical spine fracture."I stayed in the hospital for about a week mainly because it was quite difficult to mobilize myself with the fracture," she said, adding that she will have to wear a cervical collar for the next few weeks.Tan and Chan said the incident hasn't made them afraid of flying. Tan, for one, commended SIA and the Bangkok medical and airport teams for their response to the crisis.On Friday, SIA <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid0Mk6cGggHFjp2eCQADPSjp1pGCVQtfPCXh6B8LcYVLL6C6fRpiDgZt9CXhMyhj41Sl">announced</a> that 34 passengers are still in Bangkok, with 23 receiving medical treatment in the hospital. The airline said in an earlier <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid02mPfa1XrZNsdcnT8NED38aTGcmTAWjsNExVLGQhMHb7oYZXooQFW9NGMP4NGVKARvl">statement</a> on May 27 that all crew members had returned to Singapore.When approached for comment, a representative for SIA pointed BI to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/859448676226480">May 29 Facebook post</a>, which the airline published after Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau released their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mot.gov.sg/news/details/transport-safety-investigation-bureau-preliminary-investigation-findings-of-incident-involving-sq321">preliminary investigation findings</a> on Wednesday."The safety and well-being of our passengers and staff are our top priorities," SIA said in that post."We are committed to supporting our passengers and crew members who were on board SQ321 on that day, as well as their families and loved ones. This includes covering their medical and hospital expenses, as well as any additional assistance they may need," the airline added.

They went on a honeymoon to Europe. Then 60 seconds of hell in the air turned it into an experience they'll never forget.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Embarking on a major career switch can be extremely challenging.</li><li>And for veterans looking to leave their life in uniform behind, the transition can be rough.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/left-military-with-no-job-offers-transition-was-tough-2024-1">Jianhui Tan</a>, 33, spent a decade with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) when he thought it was high time for a career switch.The decision, Tan told BI, came to him after his aunt died."That became a wake-up call to me," Tan said. "I realized I hadn't been spending enough time with my family. I worked very long hours and stayed in the camps most of the time."But Tan's career transition was a lot harder than anticipated. Tan told BI that he left the SAF without any job offers and had to rely on his savings while job hunting.And it wasn't just about money. Tan, who'd spent his entire working life in the army, said he didn't know what kind of role he wanted or his dream industry.Tan wasn't alone in facing these challenges. Veterans BI spoke to faced similar challenges navigating the loss of identity when they left service or struggling to adapt to the rules of the corporate jungle.But contextualizing the skills they'd picked up in the military and maintaining their resilience, the veterans told BI, was their key to success.<h2>Leaving the military means losing a core part of your identity — and you'll have to find it again</h2><div type="image" title="Jiahui Ong, 26, served in the SAF for five years before leaving for the private sector. She is now on a career break." height="768" width="1024" msid="108958533" hostid="261"></div>For veterans like Tan, saying goodbye to a life in uniform felt akin to losing a core part of his identity.Tan shared that his decision to pursue a military career was driven by the positive experience he had while fulfilling his national service obligations. As an officer, Tan said he was tasked with training the new recruits."I found purpose in what I was doing then. I got to interact with new soldiers and helped to make their training more interesting," Tan told BI. "That was when I fell in love with the career."That was also the case for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-army-for-private-sector-have-no-regrets-serving-2024-1">Jiahui Ong</a>, 26, when she decided to call it quits with the army.Ong told BI that she had mixed feelings when she decided to leave the military after serving for five years. She said it took her nearly three months to decide if she wanted to leave her comfort zone in the army."Being in the army and having to leave was very difficult. A lot of my identity, a lot of my self-worth, was actually built when I was in the force," Ong said.But things were a lot different after they made the leap into the private sector. Ong, who took up a new career in banking, said working at DBS Bank was a full 180-degree change for her."One main difference I observed in the corporate world versus the army was that everyone in the military appears to be working toward the same agenda and objectives," Ong told BI."In the corporate world, everyone has their own agendas and personal goals," she continued. "I had to learn to be more discerning about whose agendas were more important."<h2>Managing risky situations in the military could help you navigate the corporate jungle</h2><div type="image" title="Kwong Weng Yap, 46, was a commando with the Singapore Armed Forces." height="768" width="1024" msid="108958534" hostid="261"></div>That isn't to say that one's military experience isn't applicable in the private sector.The soft skills she picked up in the army, Ong said, were beneficial to her when she went into banking."My transition to DBS wasn't super smooth, but I managed to bring in certain hard skills and soft skills from my past experiences," she told BI. The know-how she needed to manage stakeholders up and down the chain came naturally to her because of her time with the SAF, she added.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-commando-trained-with-navy-seals-it-changed-my-life-2024-2">Kwong Weng Yap</a>, 46, told BI he tapped into his military training when he went corporate. The former commando spent 13 years in the SAF. While in the army, he trained abroad in Australia and the US under the Navy SEALs training program."The SAF focuses greatly on efficiency, operational safety, and positive results and outcomes. That made me very mission-oriented and mission-driven," said Yap, who has since spent 11 years in the private sector.When navigating the corporate jungle, Yap likened the experience to parachuting. Going corporate, he said, meant learning to enjoy the journey without losing sight of the mission."The gut feel. The ability to understand the wind conditions so that you can steer your parachute carefully to a safe landing. Those same principles apply to businesses as well," Yap said.<h2>Some people think veterans can't cut it in the corporate world — and you'll have to prove them wrong</h2><div type="image" title="Jianhui Tan" height="768" width="1024" msid="108958535" hostid="261"></div>For military veterans like Tan, overcoming societal stereotypes was one of the biggest hurdles in their transition to the private sector.Tan told BI that job hunting was difficult because he had trouble crafting his résumé. Tan said he couldn't talk about some of the projects he was involved in during his service because they were confidential.And even if he did get called up for an interview, Tan said he had to battle the negative stereotypes recruiters might have toward former soldiers."The mental model that a lot of people have for military personnel is that they are very rigid, they do not have any relevant skill sets or experiences," Tan said, adding that he was fortunate that Euromonitor decided to take a chance on him.Yap faced a similar experience. Before he landed his first corporate job, Yap said he sent out many resumes and talked to many different employers.However, the former commando told BI that veterans could still rely on their military experience in the private sector. What's more important, Yap said, is knowing how to apply those experiences based on the business's goals and objectives."When you take principles from military life and apply them in a different context, like business operations, naturally, not all of them will be relevant," Yap said."There are times when you'll go with your gut and times when you need to think objectively about things. You just have to be very honest with yourself about what's working or not working," he added.<h2>Making it as a veteran in the private sector is all about playing to your strengths, using your network, and being resilient</h2>That said, the difficulty of one's transition does depend on one's prior role in the military, said Adrian Choo, CEO and cofounder of a career strategy consultancy, <a target="_blank" href="https://careeragility.org/">Career Agility International</a>."If you are an airforce pilot, then one of the clearest transitions is joining an airline as a pilot. But what if you are an explosive expert or a naval diver? There aren't many jobs out there that are relevant for those skills," Choo said.In terms of navigating biases like what Tan had faced, Choo suggested relying on one's network when job hunting."If you have difficulty going through the front door, try to find ways to slip in through the side door by asking someone to recommend you," Choo told BI. "A cold call is always more difficult than a warm call."Nonetheless, Choo said that veterans needed to take things in their stride. Planning ahead and staying resilient, he said, would pay off in the long run."Any career transition is scary and painful," Choo said. "Don't wait till the last minute to decide what you want to do. Planning ahead by three or even five years will be very helpful."

The application notes that while you don't need to be an influencer in order to apply, the judges will consider how your account reflects your "relationship with overall wellbeing and nature."<h1>Sicily </h1><div type="image" title="Italy, Sicily, Taormina." height="3468" width="4624" msid="98370166" hostid="261"></div>Sicily, a historic island in the South of Italy, first launched its <a href="https://www.visitsicily.info/en/seesicily/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"See Sicily"</a> travel promotion two years ago and recently announced its revival for 2023. Through the voucher program, visitors who book three nights at an affiliated hotel receive an extra night free of charge. The package also includes 50% off your flight or ferry ride to the island and a free local "excursion" like a walking tour or scuba diving. The tricky part is that you have to book the trip through a local travel agency. The website lists dozens of affiliated travel agents by region, including popular tourist hubs Catania and Palermo. But as The Washington Post's travel reporter Andrea Sachs <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/02/03/sicily-deal-free-night-italy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">experienced first-hand</a>, that can mean sending dozens of emails (and getting ghosted by the few who answer). Reading the fine print also reveals that the flight discount is only for trips departing before September 30, with the months of July and August excluded from the deal entirely. Premier Chen Chien-jen announced in February that the Republic of China plans to give away $165 to 500,000 tourists who visit the East Asian island, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/taiwan-paying-tourists-grants/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN Travel</a>. A total of 90,000 tour groups will also be awarded $658, the report says. The initiative is set to launch on April 15, according to local outlet the <a href="https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2023/03/18/2003796311" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Taipei Times</a>. The logistics of distributing the cash vouchers to travelers are still being ironed out, the outlet reported in March.
