India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

Despite a crippling blow to the economy, 40 million unemployment claims, the near shutdown of major industries, increasing civil unrest, and threats of military force against US citizens, stocks have recovered almost all their losses.Why?The bulls believe the market is just looking forward from the current carnage to the recovery, which they believe will be stronger than many people think. They point to the massive emergency measures that the Federal Reserve and Congress have thrown at the crisis, which have helped cushion the blow and reduce the worst-case scenario risks. And they believe that, although things are terrible now, the news will get better from here.One of Wall Street's top strategists, however, thinks this optimism is just delusion. David Rosenberg, of Rosenberg Research, says <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-why-current-rally-is-trap-david-rosenberg-2020-5">investors are falling into a "classic bear market trap."</a>Most bear <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>, Rosenberg observes, go through distinct phases. There's the sharp, initial plunge, which scares the bejeezus out of everyone and triggers panic selling. Then there's a strong recovery in the face of this fear, which deludes people into thinking the worst is over and a new bull market has begun. Then there's a long, brutal decline that lasts for a year or more and takes the market far below the depths of the initial plunge.<div type="image" title="rosenberg bear markets" height="892" width="1282" msid="76159525" hostid="261"></div>Rosenberg believes we're in the second phase — a "bear-market rally" that is calming fears and deluding people into thinking that the storm is over before resuming a more painful decline.Having worked as a professional analyst and journalist during two of the bear markets Rosenberg describes (2000 to 2002 and 2008 to 2009) — and having studied the "Great Crash of 1929" — I can confirm that these patterns are real. By September 2000, for example, in the early months of the "dot-com bust," the Nasdaq had recovered most of the gut-wrenching losses it suffered that spring, and most of the "smart money" (including, unfortunately, me) believed that the worst was over. But then stocks rolled over again and began a more sustained, devastating, and demoralizing decline. Two years later, the Nasdaq finally bottomed down more than 80% from its peak.The same thing happened in 1929. By the spring of 1930, the market had recovered much of the ground it had lost on "Black Monday" and other dark days the prior fall, and some investors thought stocks were off to the races again. Then the crash resumed, and the economy headed into the Great Depression. Two years later, in 1932, the major index closed down more than 80% from the top.As David Rosenberg says—and as the <a href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/natural-disasters-pandemics">chart below from the Conference Board shows</a>—we saw a similar pattern in 2008. And we could certainly see a similar pattern here. The blue line is 1928-1932. The gold line is 2007-2011. Back in mid-March, for example, the market was plummeting hundreds of points a day, and it seemed like the world was ending. Since then, though, the economy and pandemic, despite being horrific, have not suffered the worst-case scenarios that some investors envisioned, and investors who bought in March have been rewarded.If the economy continues to recover, and we have some medical breakthroughs or good luck and do not experience a major "second wave" of the pandemic, the market could well climb the "wall of worry" back to new highs.So, in other words, as always with the stock market, there are smart investors and persuasive logic on both sides.How should a normal person invest in the face of this uncertainty?The answer is different for each of us and depends on our individual risk tolerance and time horizon. No one knows the future, so we should build our portfolio so that we will be and feel OK no matter what happens.For most of us — including me — that means diversification. Enough "safe" investments (cash) that if stocks drop 50% to 80% over the next 18 months, I won't panic at the loss of my retirement and sell. Influencer marketing will be Rs 900 crore market in India by the end of 2021: Report

The 2015 edition of the <keyword id="1879989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Online-Marketing-Challenge">Google Online Marketing Challenge</keyword> was a tough battle, with more than 10,000 students from over 100 countries participating for the one title that eluded them- being adjudged the Global Winners of the challenge. 
 
However, the team whose campaign was declared the best entry in their first attempt itself, hailed from India. 
 
The five-member team comprising Saumil Tripathi, Shreeyash Dharmadhikari, Agastya Sanjai, Jelam Bhatt and Jainam Talsania, who were mentored by Professor Shilpa Sawant (seen above in picture) emerged victorious through boosting the sale of Devgad Alphonso mangoes, despite unforeseen but recurrent hindrances playing spoilsport. 
 The second-year students from Mukesh Patel School of Technology, Management and Engineering (under <keyword id="1295159" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narsee-Monjee-Institute">Narsee Monjee Institute</keyword> of Management Studies University) chose the Devgad Taluka Mango Growers Society Ltd, which is a growing co-operative society of 700 odd farmers for their campaign. 
 As a part of the 19-day challenge, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> provided all participants with advertising credits which were to be used to design online marketing campaigns for any company, brand or non-profit organization chosen by them. 
 
Based on approximately 1,055 keyword searches, the team made a total of 101 ads for the product in order for it to be relevant and reach their targeted audience and as the global winners of the challengers, the team will be making use of their one week all-expense paid trip to California to Google’s US office. 
 
In a freewheeling chat, Business Insider catches up with Agastya Sanjai, the team’s coder and detailer about their journey to the top. 
 
How and when did you and your team start preparing for the Google Online Marketing Challenge? 
 
We started preparing at the end of February this year, starting with team building, learning search engine marketing and search engine optimization from scratch and getting the correct business on board. Once that was done, we then began strategizing on campaigns and our future course of action in the campaign window. 
 
How would you describe the competition? 
 
The Google Online Marketing Challenge is that one competition that helps students understand the online marketing space through experimental learning. It involves running a live campaign with real money for a real business. By the end of the competition one is completely equipped with the knowledge and experience of handling a business online. Being students in the second year of college, that was quite a big leap for us. 
 
What was the idea behind choosing DevgadMango.com for the campaign? 
 
We always wanted to market a seasonal product and recognized that farmers could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the e-commerce sector and as a result zeroed in on DebgadMango.com, which was one of the early adopters of the advantages of online marketing. Technology can truly help people from the remotest parts of the globe to advance both economically and socially, and Omkar Sapre, the Chief Marketing Officer of <keyword id="3019092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Devgad-Mango">Devgad Mango</keyword> comprehended that earlier on, and we just wished to help him in his efforts. 
 
How long did it take your team to finish the campaign? 
 
It took us a total of about four months to see to it that the campaign comes to a close. The unending hours in those four months included learning the basics of online marketing, approaching a client, conducting the campaign itself and finally writing/submitting our reports to Google. 
 
What were some of the hurdles faced by your team during the course of the campaign? 
 
Undoubtedly having to manage our hectic college schedules and coursework was one of the greatest hurdles we faced in terms of the amount of effort we could put in. We would usually end up working on our campaign late into the night. 
 
Coming to the business side, sporadic showers in Maharashtra in the months of March and April caused lots of crop diseases (such as the Anthracnose virus attack) which led to the plummeting of the price of mangoes and additionally spoilage rates increased drastically. This turned out to be a headache when we realized there could be a possibility that we might not have enough stock at our end to dispatch. 
 
Moreover, being fresh entrants into the advertising space, competing against existent and new industry players with large ad spends, pushed us to work harder towards ad content creation and use tactics such as flash campaigns. 
 
Could you familiarize us with the results of your campaign? 
 
Our campaign helped boost sale of Devgad Alphonso mango to nearly 4,200 dozens in April this year, which is almost 15% more when compared to last year. 
 
In terms of revenue, the mango growers' cooperative in Devgad, Sindhudurg district earned almost Rs 42 lakh in one month, registering a 25% boost over the same period in 2014. 
 
There was also nine times the return on the amount we initially spent, apart from orders from new customers residing in 20 states, outside of Maharashtra. 
 
How excited is your team for the trip to California? 
 We have scheduled the trip to California for January end, 2016, keeping our college schedules and exams in mind. Belonging from an Engineering and Management background, it is everybody’s dream to visit the <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, especially the Google Headquarters in Mountain View. We are extremely excited about the trip!

The 'micro-moments' that you may NOT want to tap There are some micro-moments which brands may not want to tap. A classic example is the recent campaign “Wuhan Se Yahaan Le Aaye” by Amul showing the Amul girl wearing a mask. It invoked a lot of negative reviews from the audience. They were quick to relate the campaign with the Corona Virus epidemic and found it to be very insensitive. While Amul will live another day, such campaigns could be best avoided by brands that are making a mark. Brands have also tried to integrate their campaign ideas with shocking micro-moments such as the tragic death of Basketball genius Kobe Bryant. Buyers snapped up homes at a voracious pace, and prices <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-home-prices-corelogic-august-record-good-news-buyers-2021-10">surged at the fastest rate in 45 years</a>. Home inflation <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-prices-july-home-shortage-affordability-crisis-turning-point-2021-9">has started to cool off</a>, but the housing shortage still looms over the market. The National Association of Realtors estimated in June that the US has a deficit of 6.8 million homes. And while housing starts have edged higher, they're still way below what's needed to fill the gap.Contractors are key to solving the shortage, but they're in no rush. Home construction and new home sales show "beautiful symmetry," Logan Mohtashami, lead analyst at HousingWire, told Insider about how, when sales dip, housing starts follow, and when home demand ramps up, builders increase supply."The builders do not care anything about the existing-home-sales market and they don't care about the housing shortage," Mohtashami added. "They'll always go slow and steady ... People want an oversupplied market, and we just don't do that in America."<h2>Builders want to avoid another bubble</h2>There was a time not so long ago when builders rushed to flood the market with supply: right before the Great Recession. Builders who contributed to the housing bubble found themselves with an abundance of homes but nobody to sell them to. Prices collapsed, contractors across the US were burned, and many were forced to close their doors. From the 2006 peak to 2011, employment in residential construction shrank by 46%, and it still hasn't fully recovered."The last cycle left a lot of people in the homebuilding industry scarred," Ali Wolf, chief economist at housing data firm Zonda, told Insider. "Developers, builders, and banks became much more prudent in pursuing and approving new deals.""I get what they're doing," Mohtashami said. "If you look at the builders' margins, they're excellent."<h2>The rising tide lifted some ships - and left others to sink</h2>That's not to say every contractor thrived in the pandemic market. Firms with inventory in popular <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword> and those who could quickly bring more houses to market enjoyed stronger pricing power, since they were sitting on a product in high demand with very little competition, Wolf said. Others were less fortunate, finding themselves entangled in supply-chain disarray. Timelines are critical in residential construction, and falling behind on schedule can crush a business, Wolf said."Builders have the power in sales, but have little power when trying to get homes built," she added.Economists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-prices-go-down-even-out-real-estate-2021-7">expect the market to cool throughout 2022</a>, giving buyers, sellers, and builders a reprieve from the frenzy of the pandemic. A slowdown in home sales and a reversal of the labor shortage should help builders better match supply with demand, Wolf said.Until then, some firms will sink and others will swim."The pandemic provided the best of times and the worst of times for homebuilders," Wolf said. "It's really easy to say 'Why don't builders just build more homes?' But the reality is a lot more complicated."
