Research Institute (<keyword id="20370739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cmfri" source="keywords">CMFRI</keyword>) have successfully deciphered the genome of the <keyword id="23138296" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="asian-green-mussel" source="Orion">Asian green mussel</keyword> (Perna viridis), a discovery poised to revolutionise the understanding of this vital <keyword id="662896" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marine-species" source="Orion">marine species</keyword>. This is the first-ever <keyword id="184804" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chromosome" source="Orion">chromosome</keyword> level genome sequencing of a marine invertebrate species from India. Earlier, CMFRI had come out with a similar genome finding for Indian oil sardine. The Asian green mussel, Kallummakkaya in local parlance, is an important aquaculture species in the family Mytilidae contributing substantially to molluscan aquaculture. CMFRI's research found that the mussel's genome contains 723.49 Mb in size and is anchored into 15 chromosomes, according to a CMFRI release here on Thursday. The research was published in the journal Scientific Data by Nature Group. "The development will be a game-changer in boosting sustainable mussel aquaculture in the country, as this research will help gain insights into its growth, reproduction and disease resistance", said Dr Grinson George, Director of CMFRI. The findings will benefit the aquaculture sector by improving genomic selection and breeding practices, leading to enhanced productivity and resilience in fisheries, he added. A team of researchers from CMFRI led by Principal Scientist Dr Sandhya Sukumaran carried out this study with funding support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi. The team includes Dr A Gopalakrishnan, V G Vysakh, Dr Wilson Sebastian, Dr Lalitha Hari Dharani, Dr Akhilesh Pandey, Dr Abishek Kumar and Dr J K Jena. According to scientists, this will help develop new strategies to combat diseases in the mussel. "Genomic investigations on this species are vital to understand genes, gene combinations and signaling pathways leading to the parasitic diseases, which constitute a major threat to Asian green mussel aquaculture in India causing substantial mortalities in farms," said Dr Sandhya Sukumaran. According to the scientists, the genome assembly of green mussels will emerge as a valuable tool for exploring <keyword id="6355291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer" source="Orion">cancer</keyword> mechanisms and developing new therapeutic strategies. "A total of 49654 protein-coding genes were identified, including 634 genes associated with the cancer pathway and 408 genes associated with viral carcinogenesis. This indicates that this species is a novel model organism for cancer research," Sukumaran said. This advancement promises to significantly enhance our understanding of cancer pathways and facilitate the discovery of novel treatments, she added. Apart from its aquaculture prospects, Asian green mussels play a vital role as a bio-monitor as it is capable of accumulating heavy metals and other environmental pollutants in large quantities. Understanding the genome assembly will provide valuable information about the genomic pathways involved in response to pollutants. "The genetic markers to be developed from this research could be used to monitor pollutants in aquatic bodies, a significant milestone in safeguarding the aquatic environment," Sandhya said. Scientists believe that the genome decoding of this species would enhance knowledge regarding the effect of environmental pollutants on biological systems, as this bivalve is adaptable to local environmental stressors like variations in pH, temperature, salinity and air exposure.

"These announcements made in the Union Budget 2024-25 are set to significantly enhance aquaculture and seafood export sectors," the authority said. The judge called those meetings "ongoing."Prosecutors have turned their notes from those meetings over to defense lawyers, who on Monday expressed a great eagerness to know the husband and wife's identities and the video's contents."Not only is it probative, I mean, it is incredibly favorable to the defense, or at least certain parts of it," defense lawyer Thomas Kenniff said of the notes of these meetings, speaking to the judge Monday."Maybe more probative than any testimony of the issues that are going to be at issue in this trial."The defense noted that because the husband and wife live outside the United States, their testimony and video may be impervious to subpoenas from either side.Still, Kenniff suggested that, based on the DA's notes, the couple's footage and testimony are so good for the defense that prosecutors are making less than a good-faith effort to secure either. "If we are at the same point a few weeks from now, then that's, I think, a very serious issue," Kenniff said, warning that his client's right to present a defense was being compromised.Prosecutors have possession of at least two other eye-witness videos, according to court filings, but both start after Penny has begun to choke Neely.The next hearing in the case is set for October 3.Penny, of Long Island, remains free on $100,000 cash bail, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daniel-penny-makes-millions-in-jordan-neely-chokehold-defense-donations-2023-8">his online defense fund has raised $3 million</a>.He has pleaded not guilty to an indictment that alleges he was reckless or at least negligent when he used excessive force on Neely, continuing to choke him for nearly a minute after the prone man had stopped moving.Neely was a homeless street performer and Michael Jackson impersonator. He had schizophrenia, multiple assault arrests, and a history of using K2, a powerful synthetic marijuana, according to court papers filed by both the prosecution and the defense.Prosecutors have noted that, according to multiple eye-witnesses, Neely was verbally threatening passengers at the time Penny jumped him. In a court filing on Monday, prosecutors conceded that there was a "synthetic cannabinoid present in his blood at autopsy."Still, "the defense should not be permitted to introduce damaging background information regarding the victim's character and history," lead prosecutor Dafna Yoran wrote in the filing."The only reason to do so is to influence the jury to devalue Mr. Neely's life," Yoran wrote.Kenniff and a spokesman for the district attorney's office declined to comment on this story.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="108481" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="baltimore" source="Orion">Baltimore</keyword> officials are blaming the <keyword id="21085838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Francis-Scott-Key-Bridge" source="Orion">Francis Scott Key Bridge</keyword>'s collapse on the Dali's owner and manager.</li><li>In a legal filing on Monday, they accused the ship of leaving port even after its alarms went off.</li></ul>City of Baltimore officials on Monday accused the owner and manager of the ship that crashed into the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/francis-scott-key-bridge-no-chance-against-large-impact-experts-2024-3">Francis Scott Key Bridge</a> of allowing the vessel to set sail despite it being "clearly unseaworthy." In a <a target="_blank" href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.556480/gov.uscourts.mdd.556480.17.0.pdf">legal filing </a>against <keyword id="15197233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Synergy-Marine" source="Orion">Synergy Marine</keyword>, the manager of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-we-know-dali-francis-scott-crash-collapse-maryland-bridge-2024-3">the Dali</a>, and Grace Ocean, the ship's owner, attorneys for the city accused both companies of being "grossly and potentially criminally negligent." The allegations came in response to a petition filed in Maryland federal court by the firms, which are both based in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-workers-can-request-shorter-weeks-and-work-from-home-2024-4">Singapore</a>, asking for their liability in the bridge disaster to be capped at $43.6 million. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and the city council are contesting the petition, asking for no limit to be enacted. Their filing contains a litany of allegations blaming Synergy Marine and Grace Ocean for negligence and reckless management that resulted in the bridge's collapse on March 26. "Reporting has indicated that, even before leaving port, alarms showing an inconsistent power supply on the Dali had sounded," the court petition reads. "The Dali left port anyway, despite its clearly unseaworthy condition." City officials further accused those in charge of the Dali of deploying an "incompetent crew" that was "inattentive to its duties," lacked proper training, and "failed to comply with local navigation customs." A spokesperson for Synergy Marine said it would be inappropriate to comment on ongoing court proceedings. Grace Ocean did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider. The Singapore-flagged Dali struck a support pillar of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baltimore-bridge-collapse-response-timing-mayday-call-saved-lives-2024-3">Key Bridge</a> in the early morning of March 26 as it left the Port of Baltimore for Sri Lanka, causing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/livestream-video-francis-scott-key-bridge-ship-crash-maryland-2024-3">most of the bridge's span</a> to collapse into the Patapsco River. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/6-missing-baltimore-bridge-collapse-presumed-dead-coast-guard-2024-3">Six construction workers</a> who were repairing potholes on the bridge were killed. Authorities found that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dali-asked-tugboats-help-before-crashed-into-baltimore-bridge-2024-3">984-foot ship lost power</a> as it navigated toward the bridge, causing it to lose propulsion. The crew on board broadcast a mayday call just before impact, allowing traffic police to seal access to the bridge. Two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/baltimore-bridge-collapse-dali-ship-port-pilots-key-role-shipping-4225286">ship pilots</a>, or local experts on the terrain and river, were on board the Dali then. These specialists typically advise the ship's master, who pilots the vessel, on navigating such waters and weather conditions. The 22 all-Indian crew on the Dali were unharmed. The <keyword id="21412636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="key-bridge" source="Orion">Key Bridge</keyword>'s collapse has deeply wounded Baltimore's economy, cutting off maritime traffic to and from the city's port — the ninth-largest in the US — and disrupting trucking routes. The port is estimated to bring about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baltimore-port-closure-could-cost-15-million-per-day-2024-3">$15 million in economic activity daily.</a> "Tens of thousands of jobs rely directly on the Port," the city officials' filing said. There are concerns of a further ripple effect in the regional economy, with port workers made jobless now unable to spend at local businesses. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dali-crash-baltimore-bridge-764-tons-hazmat-goods-ntsb-2024-3">National Transportation Safety Board</a>, which is leading the cleanup of the bridge site and removing fallen containers from the Patapsco, is investigating the cause of the allision. The following has been edited for length and clarity.Growing up without a lot in the Chicago area, I tried to do all the right things to set myself up, like taking honors classes and playing football.I lost my way and started making bad decisions. At 17, I was kicked out of high school because I skipped class to work at my fast-food job and hang out with my friends.<h2 id="ed87844c-cbcf-4457-bd3b-b1fc41bea2d6">I was always interested in the Marines</h2>After getting kicked out of school, I enlisted in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-likely-first-marine-veteran-vice-president-if-elected-2024-7">Marine Corps</a>.I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wildly-successful-people-who-dropped-out-of-high-school-2015-9">got my GED</a> and took 15 units of entry-level community college classes, like English 101 and US History. My recruiter said it would help me get the military <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loneliness-epidemic-task-associates-paralegals-workplace-isolation-2024-3">paralegal job</a> I was aiming for, but I didn't get it, so I went into infantry.I left for boot camp in August 2006, graduated in November, and started at the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California, the next month.<h2 id="1c4b943b-814c-4bc2-b9ac-462f6d04d3fe">I was on active duty for 4 years</h2>My first deployment was to Iraq, and then I deployed aboard the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-warship-repaired-coconut-logs-torpedo-strike-world-war-ii-2023-12">USS New Orleans</a>. The military taught me to push myself, be self-disciplined, manage people and teams, and work in a fast-paced environment.I met my wife in 2008 while stationed in California between deployments, and she became pregnant with our first child as I neared the end of my first enlistment in 2010. I started to feel less invincible and began to think about a new career. I didn't want to be away for months at a time and miss my child's early life.<h2 id="d66570d4-fc87-4f32-a656-fa878e9c2c5a">I left the military and began classes at a community college</h2>Tragically, our first daughter died during birth. My wife and I supported each other and decided to persevere.I was enrolled full-time in an associate of arts program in political science and government, taking four to five classes per semester.I began working the graveyard shift as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/security-guard-high-end-store-pricey-merchandise-2022-10">security guard</a> to make ends meet. I was on campus from 9:30 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. each weekday. Then, I'd go to sleep and get up to work from midnight to 8 a.m., five days or more a week.<h2 id="daa9ef1c-3de9-4e43-866f-4dd01daba032">I had a real interest in criminal justice</h2>Many of my academic interests pointed toward a career in law, so I began researching what I needed to do to become a lawyer.The military taught me to always push myself above and beyond the minimum requirements. I joined two honors societies and saw that we received letters from universities inviting us to apply.<h2 id="dd5cfad0-affc-43b6-bc5b-1514d8e190aa">I applied to seven or eight universities to earn my bachelor's degree in political science and government</h2>I felt confident that my chances of being accepted by some public universities were promising, but I also applied to some big ones, like Stanford and Columbia.Stanford offered me a place and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/student-loans/how-to-get-college-scholarship">full scholarship</a> through needs-based aid due to my income. Saying yes to Stanford was a no-brainer. Our second daughter was born right before we moved to Stanford.<h2 id="51a1b0b2-bc28-4601-8e8a-f8e0039ad1d6">I struggled to balance full time work and study</h2>My job transferred me, but the hours weren't sustainable, so I quit to focus on being a student. I took out student loans to cover my family's living expenses.The highlight of my time at Stanford was a program called <a target="_blank" href="https://siw.stanford.edu/">Stanford in Washington</a>, where I spent a term in DC, took small classes that engaged in government policy, and worked an internship with the Department of Justice. My family moved with me, and we lived in a faculty apartment.<h2 id="2a7aff8a-0760-472f-9187-5dae7cf65e1d">I enjoyed the Stanford experience so much that I began to think about what next, and all roads pointed to law school</h2>In my junior year, I started studying for and taking the LSAT, drafting multiple essays for different prompts, and getting feedback from trusted sources.Based on my application metrics, I was confident I could get into some schools, but I've also thrown a few Hail Marys in my life, and they've been caught, so I wanted to give some of the top-ranked schools a shot.<h2 id="f29baeda-d884-406c-a212-1de600359679">One of the first schools that I heard back from was my No. 1 choice: Harvard University</h2>When the call came from an unknown number in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I couldn't believe this was happening to me.I saved three academic years of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/gi-bill-online-school-travel-the-world-2022-9">GI Bill benefits</a> because of my scholarship to Stanford. The GI Bill is capped at the highest cost of an in-state public school, but they have a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/post-9-11/yellow-ribbon-program/">Yellow Ribbon Program</a> where schools can agree to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover some or all of the remaining gap.Fortunately, Harvard covered 50% of the remaining gap, so the VA matched and covered the rest.<h2 id="9a622ac6-a691-4644-9e8e-06ab873fd87a">I essentially went to Harvard for free</h2>I took out more <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-student-loan-borrowers-cheaper-payments-debt-cancellation-2024-7">student loans</a> to cover family living expenses, and our third child was born shortly after I arrived at Harvard.It was very similar to my Stanford experience, where there were many people with extremely impressive backgrounds. Then there were people like me who seemingly 'defied the odds' that we incorrectly believed made places like this out of our reach.The best advice I received during my academic career is that you're not paying for the materials in textbooks so much as the people you meet and the conversations you'll have.<h2 id="2818c779-6aad-47b4-a657-a5dd692619b4">After graduating in 2017, I was offered a job at a top law firm</h2>I now practice securities enforcement at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-skadden-fellowship-public-interest-law-school-25-8">Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher &amp; Flom</a>, and my salary is in the mid-six figures range.Our fourth child was born shortly after we moved back to DC. After supporting me, my wife is pursuing her career interests with our local county police department.It's pretty amazing that a Black kid from a low-income family who didn't finish high school was able to achieve all of this. I've had no regrets since joining the Marines.I could've made better decisions as a teenager, but that's life.
