The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 0.20% higher, and the S&amp;P 500 gained nearly 10 points towards the end of trading. These are the stocks to watch out for during the trading session on September 25: Tata Consumer Products According to <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/tata-consumer-products-plans-to-bid-for-coffee-day-s-vending-business-120092401736_1.html">media reports,</a> the consumer arm of Tata Group, Tata Consumer Products is planning to bid for the vending machine business of Coffee Day Enterprises. The reports claim that the board of Tata Consumer had approved the proposal to explore an acquisition of the operation from Coffee Day. The shares of Tata Consumer Products ended 2% lower yesterday. Shriram City Union Finance India’s central bank, RBI has levied a ₹5 lakh penalty on the Chennai-based Shriram City Union Finance for non-compliance with its directions on verification of the ownership of gold jewellery contained in NBFC. The shares of Shriram City Union Finance ended 3% lower yesterday. Mahindra and Mahindra Anand Mahindra-led automotive major, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) bought more shares in Finland-based harvester maker Sampo Rosenlew Oy. M&amp;M had picked up a 35% stake in the Finnish firm in 2016 before raising it to 49.1% over the next four years, and now it has spent ₹18 crore to increase its stake to 74.97% stake in the firm. The shares of M&amp;M ended 5% lower yesterday. GAIL and ONGC GAIL (India) has cut supplies by about 40% to customers, mainly power and fertiliser companies, after a pipeline rupture led to a fire in an ONGC’s Gujarat plant. GAIL in a statement said “about 30 mmscmd of natural gas supplies into its north-western pipeline network (HVJ system) was immediately shut-off” following the fire. The shares of GAIL and ONGC ended 4% and 3% lower, respectively, yesterday. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said it has been hired as a digital transformation partner by women fashion retail chain Maurices. TCS will help the company build its greenfield IT ecosystem with the intent of optimising its 200 existing applications and software components within the next 17 months. The shares of TCS ended 6% lower yesterday. RITES The engineering consultancy company, RITES has bagged a ₹206 crore contract to construct four roads over bridges in Andhra Pradesh from Indian Railways. “RITES Ltd has been awarded a turnkey contract for construction of (ROBs) in replacement of existing level crossings on competition basis from Railway Board amounting to Rs 205.85 crore,” the company said in a statement. The shares of RITES ended 1.3% lower yesterday. Marico The FMCG major Marico said it has divested its entire stake in the fitness app Revolutionary Fitness (Revofit). The shares of Marico ended 1% higher yesterday. Divi's Laboratories and SBI Life Insurance Divi's Laboratories and SBI Life Insurance will replace Bharti Infratel and Zee Entertainment Enterprises on the Nifty 50 benchmark index today. Back home, assembly elections are underway in Bihar, and the October series F&amp;O expiry kept the markets jittery. Market experts, however, believe that the ‘correction has not begun yet.’ “We broke the levels of 11700 and briefly visited 11684, which is around the lower end of the range, but we bounced back to close above 11700. These are crucial times for trading as a break of 11650 could trigger a fresh wave of shorts which could take the markets down to 11400-11450,” said Manish Hathiramani, proprietary index trader and technical analyst, Deen Dayal Investments. What led to the sharp fall? <ul><li>Weak global cues amid a resurgence of coronavirus cases in Europe, slow progress on vaccines </li></ul>Indices across Asia felt the pain in trade today as concerns over US stimulus kept investors jittery. Indian indices fell the most amongst emerging Asian markets today. Bourses in Hong Kong and Tokyo ended in the red, while Shanghai and Seoul were in the positive territory. Although the coronavirus pandemic has shown a declining trend in India — some of the major European countries are witnessing the second wave of coronavirus. According to Paras Bothra, President of Equity Research, Ashika Stock Broking, “Uncertainty with regards to the second wave of a virus and setbacks to some of the covid vaccines are the biggest risks for the market.” <ul><li>US presidential elections and Bihar assembly elections in the spotlight </li></ul>The ongoing elections in the US will decide the leader of the world’s largest economy. As the US elections inch closer to the November 3 deadline, the uncertainty continues to loom among the investors. According to Keshav Lahoti, Associate Equity Analyst at Angel Broking, “the volatility is expected to continue in the market on the eye of key events of the US election.” And, back home, Bihar is the first state to go to polls amidst this pandemic. Polling for the first phase of elections in Bihar’s assembly elections gathered momentum. At 3 pm, the Election Commission had registered 46.29% voting in 16 districts. <ul><li>F&amp;O expiry jitters </li></ul>The volatility in the market was also due to profit-booking ahead of the monthly F&amp;O Expiry tomorrow. An expiration date in derivatives is the last day that derivative contracts, such as options or futures, are valid. Analysts believe ‘correction has not begun yet’ While analysts remain bullish on the long term prospects of the Indian market, they expect the coming next few weeks are crucial — given the surging Covid cases in Europe, impasse over the second US stimulus bill, and the very important US Presidential elections in November. “I would not term this as a correction as I do not feel a correction has begun. We will consider the beginning of a corrective move when we break the level of 11650. From that point, we could witness a short term pit stop at about 11450, where lies the next support level. Investor sentiments continue to remain bullish,” said Hathiramani. Jyoti Roy, Equity Strategist at Angel Broking, also said it would not be correct to state that markets are witnessing a correction as the Nifty is trading at a level of around 12,000, which is very close to its all-time highs. He believes that further upmove from current levels will be dependent upon positive news flows on the vaccine front along with the positive outcome of other key events. Elections, rising global COVID cases, and F&O expiry keep markets jittery — but experts believe ‘correction has not begun yet’

According to the report, the money spent by a household in consumption fell from ₹1,501 a month in 2011-12 to ₹1,446 a month in 2017-18. This is the second time a similar allegation has been made against the government; another National Sample Office (NSO) survey on rising unemployment was held back from release by the government until the elections were over. The survey was conducted between July 2017 and June 2018, eight months after demonetisation and during the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and it is hardly surprising. The slowdown in the economy has been palpable and spoken of by various economists and market watchers ad nauseam. But the government decided to hold back the report until it was reported in Business Standard today. According to the latest report cited by the daily, money spent on consumption fell 8.8% in rural areas. This fall has been visible in slowing volume of growth of giants like Hindustan Unilever, Marico, Parle G etc. in recent quarters, which make a bulk of their earnings from smaller towns and villages. Indian government hid another survey that showed fall in consumer spending for the first time in four decades: Report

<ul><li>The average aggregate demand in China was back to 81% of the pre-pandemic normal as of April 24. </li><li>The demand for consumer staples in China is back to the levels seen before COVID-19 brokeout. </li><li>The relative lag is in consumer discretionary, which, on average, is about 64% of the normal level at the end of April.</li></ul>Global investment bank Goldman Sachs said that most of the reforms announced by the Indian government will have an impact in the medium term while the short term may see a "deeper recession". The country's real GDP growth may fall 5% in the current financial year ending March 2020, the report added. The COVID-19 outbreak happened earlier in China and therefore, it has reduced and the economy is reopening earlier than other parts of the world. Therefore, the recovery trends in China could be a good cue for countries, especially emerging markets like India, to estimate what the post-COVID economic trends might be. China’s equity research team of Goldman Sachs put together a tracker that tracks consumer and industrial demand across China, as the official stats come with a few days lag. The tracker revealed steady growth in China’s economy. “if we really look at the most recently updated, the average aggregate demand, the level average to about 81% as of April 24. So that’s our last, the data points updated and this is a versus the bottom in February, which is only around 50%. Back in January we were at about 90%. Goldman Sachs’s China recovery data can spark hope for HUL and D-Mart, and make Maruti, Tata Motors and IndiGo more anxious

<ul><li>Market is hoping that the government will continue with its push for schemes like Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and the PLI.</li><li>Capex spending is not expected to be as high as FY24 but is expected to be in the range of 10-20% higher than the year before.</li><li>Along with infra push, rural economy driven schemes are expected to receive allocations as it has been under the cloud of a weak monsoon. </li></ul>Union finance minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> set the stage for low expectations from the upcoming Interim Budget, insisting that there would be no spectacular announcement. The interim budget allows the incumbent government to undertake expenditures till a new government is formed after general elections. The stock markets too have not been expecting much from it either. After BJP’s wins during state elections drove a rally, they hope the government will keep pushing along the path of fiscal consolidation. Investors expect the government will provide impetus to key policy reforms such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and the PLI scheme in FY25. “The impact of the Union Budget on the equity market has reduced notably over the past few years, with the government undertaking most of the reforms outside the purview of the Budget. Nonetheless, the market participants continue to view it as a critical catalyst stimulating the growth of the Indian economy and, thereby, the Indian market,” said <keyword id="20204942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pranav-haridasan" source="keywords">Pranav Haridasan</keyword>, MD and CEO, Axis Securities. The Big Question of public capex The Indian government’s capex push in FY24 has aided large-scale infrastructure growth. This helped mid and small cap companies gain ground as private capex is still elusive. Any announcements on this side could be market movers. “Major public capex is unlikely since the FM has to achieve the fiscal deficit target of 5.9% for FY24 targeted in the 2023 budget. Also the massive public expenditure done through the budget provision last year has helped in triggering growth in the Indian economy. Therefore, the government’s priority would be to achieve fiscal discipline,” opines Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. While the FY24 Union Budget saw a 35% rise in capex spending, this time the market hopes it to be anywhere around 10-20%. Its focus is likely to continue to be on infrastructure like roads, water, metro, railways, defense, digital infrastructure, and green technologies. All which will drive investment-driven growth. Driving the rural economy A few experts also believe that the government might give the rural economy a much needed push as it’s not fully recovered from the pandemic. Particularly because buoyant tax collections have kept India’s fiscal situation of FY24 in a good stead. “We expect the government to stick to its path of fiscal consolidation, without compromising on quality of expenditure. In the wake of weaker monsoon and pressure seen in Rabi sowing season, focus will be on providing support to rural growth. Important schemes such as PM-KISAN, MGNAREGA, Housing for all, free food grains, will continue to hold significant importance,” said <keyword id="20368299" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sonal-badhan" source="keywords">Sonal Badhan</keyword>, economist at Bank of Baroda. If the rural economy gets a boost, it will be a positive for FMCG majors like HUL, Marico, Dabur whose volume growth has been sluggish for the last few quarters. It will also aid as well as <keyword id="19983534" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hero-motocorp" source="keywords">Hero Motocorp</keyword>, M&amp;M, while continued infra push can be good news for L&amp;T, RVNL, IVRCL, Tata Power and more. Market experts also believe that if the government tightens its belts, and chugs along the path of fiscal discipline, it spells good news for global investors. Marzban Irani, CIO, Fixed Income at LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management worries that popular measures ahead of the elections may play spoilsport. "Normally, we do not expect any path breaking policy announcements in an interim budget. But there is always scope for unconventional moves. In my view, the Centre should try to adhere to the fiscal deficit target as it gives a clear signal to global investors,” Irani added.

The import duty on all kinds of textiles — whether it’s fabric, garments or yarn — has been cut by half. Morgan Stanley has said that the stocks have peaked and the returns may not be as exciting in the next 3-6 months. Rising inflation both in the US and India may hurt Indian stock markets. The analysts at Morgan Stanley said that they expect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to increase interest rates in February 2022. Inflation has been a cause of concern for many companies this earnings season including consumer goods giants — including Marico, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Britannia and Parle to name a few ⁠— that may have to pass on more price hikes if inflation remains high. In fact, consumer product companies are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/profit-margin-of-britannia-declines-in-q2-of-fy-2022/articleshow/87600806.cms">unable to hike prices</a> to cover the entire rise in costs and that has led to shrinking margins for many. The risk of a mutant virus that is resistant to vaccines is the biggest downside risk, as it might leave the government no choice but to roll out new mobility restrictions, say analysts at UBS. More restrictions would mean several pockets of the economy would be forced to halt physical operations leading to slowdown in economic activity. What could turn the tide in India’s favour? A correction in the market typically means either a fall in prices or they remain stagnant or rangebound for a while. The latter is also called ‘time correction’. But there could be other factors that could come into play too. For instance, India has been pushing to get its bonds included in the global indices. UBS emerging markets strategist Rohit Arora has said that it is possible in early 2022 while Bloomberg has noted that these decisions are usually announced in September. If it happens, India could see a foreign fund inflow of $15-20 billion and that could be a big mover for the equities too. <div type="image" title="FII" height="900" width="1200" msid="87667318" hostid="261"></div> What is a global bond index?
