Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

The stock went up 5.73 per cent to Rs 2,121.30 on the BSE. On the NSE, it climbed 6.32 per cent to Rs 2,123. TVS Motor Company on Wednesday said its net profit increased 15 per cent to Rs 387 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2024, riding on robust sales. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 336 crore in the January-March period of the previous fiscal. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 10,042 crore in the period under review compared with Rs 8,031 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23. In the fourth quarter, the company said its overall <keyword id="19948209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler" source="keywords">two-wheeler</keyword> and three-wheeler sales, including exports, grew by 22 per cent to 10.63 lakh units compared to 8.68 lakh units in the same period of the 2022-23 fiscal. For the year ended on March 31, 2024, the company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,686 crore as against Rs 1,329 crore a year ago. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 39,145 crore in FY24 over Rs 31,974 crore in the 2022-23 fiscal. Shares of <keyword id="6354999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="voltas" source="Orion">Voltas</keyword> Ltd fell by nearly 3 per cent on Thursday morning trade after the air conditioning maker reported a decline of 21.6 per cent in its consolidated net profit in the March 2023 quarter. The stock fell by 2.85 per cent to Rs 830.60 on the BSE. At the NSE, it declined 2.82 per cent to Rs 830.50. Voltas Ltd on Wednesday reported a decline of 21.6 per cent in its consolidated net profit at Rs 143.23 crore in the March 2023 quarter, due to provisions made on delayed collection in the international project business. The Tata group firm had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 182.71 crore in the year-ago period, the company said in a regulatory filing. Revenue from operations of Voltas was up 11.5 per cent to Rs 2,936.76 crore during the period under review, as against Rs 2,633.72 crore a year ago. "Profit before and after taxes were impacted during the current quarter due to provisions made on delayed collection in the international project business," Voltas said in its earnings statement. Voltas shares decline nearly 3% after March quarter earnings announcement

The oil-to-telecom-and-retail conglomerate's consolidated net profit stood at Rs 18,951 crore, or Rs 28.01 per share, in January-March quarter of the 2023-24 fiscal compared to Rs 19,299 crore, or Rs 28.52 a share, a year ago, according to a company's stock exchange filing. The profit was, however, higher quarter-on-quarter when compared to Rs 17,265 crore in October-December period. For the full fiscal FY24 (April 2023 to March 2024), Reliance posted a record net profit of Rs 69,621 crore as compared to Rs 66,702 crore earnings in the preceding financial year. Reliance also became the first Indian company to hit Rs 10 lakh crore turnover in FY24 when revenue from operations rose 2.6 per cent from Rs 9.74 lakh crore in 2022-23. The oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business, the main milch cow, posted a rise in profitability annually as well as sequentially, while retail business' earnings rose on new store openings despite lower footfalls. The firm helmed by billionaire <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> saw telecom revenues soar as it outpaced competition in subscriber addition and data traffic. While quarterly EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) was up 14.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 47,150 crore, registering growth across all businesses, the revenue from operations rose almost 11 per cent to Rs 2.64 lakh crore. The mainstay oil refining and petrochemicals business, called O2C, posted a 11 per cent rise in revenue and a 3 per cent higher EBITDA at Rs 16,777 crore in Q4. This was primarily because of "advantageous" sourcing of feedstock (crude oil) for refining business and use of ethane for making chemicals as well as higher domestic product placement, a company statement said, adding exports were down 8.5 per cent. With the consumer base swelling to 481.8 million from 470.9 million at the end of December on a flat per-user revenues of Rs 181.7, Reliance <keyword id="21397660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio-Infocomm-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Jio Infocomm Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Jio Infocomm Ltd">Jio Infocomm Ltd</keyword> - the digital services business - posted a 12 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 5,583 crore in the fourth quarter of FY24. Also, aiding the business was rise in data traffic to 40.9 billion GB in January-March from 38.1 billion GB in the preceding quarter. For the full year, Jio posted a profit of Rs 21,424 crore as compared to Rs 19,124 crore in FY23. Profits from the retail business climbed 11.7 per cent to Rs 2,698 crore as store count rose to 18,836 from 18,774. Store footfalls dropped to 272 million from 282 million in October-December 2023 but were higher than 219 million recorded in January-March 2023. Oil and gas EBITDA soared 47.5 per cent to Rs 5,606 crore as higher gas volumes partly offset lower price realisation. The firm's flagship KG-D6 block in Krishna Godavari basin in the Bay of Bengal is now producing about 30 million standard cubic metres per day of gas and 23,000 barrels a day of oil/condensate. The company said its outstanding debt rose to Rs 3.24 lakh crore from Rs 3.11 lakh crore in December-end. After accounting for cash in hand, net debt at Rs 1.16 lakh crore as on March 31 was lower than Rs 1.25 lakh crore a year back. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of <keyword id="20076630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries-limited" source="keywords">Reliance Industries Limited</keyword>, said all segments of business have posted a robust financial and operating performance. Performance of the digital services segment has been boosted by accelerated expansion of subscriber base, supported by both mobility and fixed wireless services, he said. Reliance Industries quarterly profit stays flat; annual earnings hit record at ₹69,621 crore

It posted a net income of $24.4 million, an over 500% increase compared to the same period last year. Daily active users, one of the company's most important metrics, grew 59%, while paid subscribers grew by 52%, the company said in its second-quarter earnings report."We also achieved two milestones: surpassing 100 million monthly active users, and reaching 8 million paying subscribers," Luis von Ahn, the company's CEO, said in an earnings call on Wednesday.The company's stock gained about 5.5% in after hours trading.<h2 id="a3485be3-7784-4c46-9f78-e7ce779a2049">A very specific marketing approach</h2>Duolingo's user growth in the past year could be attributed to its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/duolingo-will-run-its-first-super-bowl-ad-2023-12">marketing tactics.</a>The company is famous for its guilt-inducing in-app and email marketing messages, asking users to continue their learning on the app. Despite their controversial nature, experts think it's the right approach for gen Z users."They're looking for something that comes across more like a person," Brian Honigman, a marketing consultant based in Philadelphia, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/duolingo-meanest-app-nagging-notifications-melting-icon-gen-z-marketing-2024-7">Business Insider last month</a>. "Duolingo does a fantastic job of not coming across like many other brands."The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/duolingo-meanest-app-nagging-notifications-melting-icon-gen-z-marketing-2024-7">app's iconic green owl mascot</a> is also perceived as authentic and consistent by users. Whether it's on TV or Youtube ads, or on TikTok, where Duolingo has over 12.5 million followers, the owl displays its smug and hilarious personality.The mascot and the Duolingo app alike have become a cultural icon, making appearances in user-generated content and even <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-details-references-easter-eggs-missed-2023-7">Hollywood</a>."Our signature 'ding' was featured in the '<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-did-barbie-spend-marketing-box-office-success-explained-2023-7">Barbie' movie</a>, providing an incredible brand boost, and in many ways, that was indicative of our commanding presence in the zeitgeist last year," Matt Skaruppa, Duolingo's chief financial officer, said in the call.The brand is also doubling down on country-specific marketing.Duolingo's social media accounts in India, Germany, and France feature content based on viral memes, news events, and social media trends, amassing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/duolingodeutschland/?hl=en">hundreds of thousands</a> of followers in each country.But the app's success on social media has not been enough to calm investors.It beat analyst expectations when it reported fourth-quarter 2023 earnings in February, but missed them in the March quarter and saw shares slip because it gained new users at the slowest rate since 2022.Duolingo stock is down over 24% year to date.

It is difficult to beat such expectations, but giving an optimistic revenue forecast for future quarters and years without disappointing investors is even harder," Alex Kuptsikevich, a senior market analyst at FXPro, said in a note on Wednesday.Analysts have also struck a cautious tone around delays of Nvidia's key next-gen Blackwell chip, which could spark further volatility in the share price, they say.However, if the chip giant can beat estimates yet again, and also point to the ways in which its customers are making money from its AI hardware, Wall Street will likely fuel a fresh rally in the stock. Bank of America: 'Notable but measured beat'</h3><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bac-stock">Bank of America</a> expects Nvidia to modestly beat analyst expectations on Wednesday, but not by the margins it has in the past.The bank said Nvidia could beat earnings by 3% and raise its outlook by 5%, which would be significantly lower than the company's prior earnings beat of 10% and guidance boost of 22%. "The more measured pace will also be seen as creating more fertile ground for continued growth in CY25 and beyond," Bank of America said. The bank expects investors' focus on Nvidia after earnings will be its product roadmap, which could be showcased at its GPU Tech Conference in mid-March.<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-outlook-undervalued-ai-demand-still-early-nvda-2024-2">Bank of America rates Nvidia at "Buy" and calls it a "Top Pick"</a> with a $800 price target.<h3>Bloomberg Intelligence: 'Nvidia to maintain stronghold in data-center market'</h3>Bloomberg Intelligence associate Oscar Tejada said in a Friday note that Nvidia will likely impress investors on Wednesday."With supply visibility for Nvidia's GPUs improving, yet still behind demand, and appetite for generative AI not slowing, Nvidia will likely report another solid 4Q, with a positive outlook toward 2025," Tejada said.But another double-digit beat and raise from Nvidia is unlikely amid rising supply of Nvidia's GPUs and shortened lead times for its customers."Nvidia's focus on securing more supply and diversifying into Enterprise and Sovereign projects should reaffirm continued demand through 2025. Also, hyperscale cloud service providers like Meta and Microsoft continue to invest in AI-powered data centers, despite proprietary chip projects," Tejada said.

Total expenses in the fourth quarter were higher at Rs 4,044.90 crore compared to Rs 2,761.45 crore in the corresponding period a year ago. In the fourth quarter the unitary cooling products business segment revenue grew by 44 per cent to Rs 2,955 crore as compared to Rs 2,049 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year on account of a better product mix enhancement approach, the company said. The engineering products and services division clocked revenue of Rs 156 crore as compared to Rs 142 crore in the year-ago period, it added.
